In general, you let dnf do it for you. If it is broken, you have bigger fish to

As you recall, I asked you about kernels showing up in /boot/efi, this is one
of the cases where dnf is operating correctly, but due to local configuration,
dnf installs the vmlinuz files in the wrong place. It sounds like there’s
something similar going on for you, a piece of the kernel package post-install
is failing.

A good thing to try is to run “dnf reinstall kernel-core” and see if you see
any errors. Also check if new files are installed in /boot and
/boot/loader/entries/. Check the logs in /var/log, there are a bunch of
dnf-specific logs.

At this point I’m not even sure what version of Fedora you are running, since
it’s a toss-up on what package of dnf you are using. It’s like assembling a

This is evidence that suggests there may have been kernel installations for a
systemd-boot configured system that in fact is a grub configured system. Kernels
on a systemd-boot configured system are installed on an ESP partition, which
mounts to /boot/efi/, and requires a significantly larger ESP partition to fit
kernels and initrds than an ESP for use only for several or less smaller grub
file(s) and/or similarly small Windows bootloader files.

Both that message and your previous one *do* have a text/plain section

My strategy won't help you now, but may in the future. When I install
extra packages, I log them to a post-install text file.

In my case, the few things I do add after a fresh install, I'll do from
a terminal as root. I just cut and past "dnf install named" (or
whatever it was) to a post-install.log file. There's so few of these
things that I can simply do the reverse (copy and paste from file to
terminal).

I type in a few notes about configuration customisations I've done,
too. By way of example, here's the entire thing from an old CentOS
box:

---
yum install httpd
yum install dovecot
yum install evolution
yum install vlc
yum install smplayer
yum install bind-chroot

Insert into /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
ServerAlias *
---

As you can see, I didn't change much from the default install. But if
you did lots of post-install additions, you could write such a log as
an executable script to automate things. Or simply, just write all the
packages to a single command line:

yum install httpd dovecot evolution vlc smplayer bind-chroot

And as far as seeing things you didn't install on your system, it's
likely they were dependencies. They may not be the same, now, let a
new install of your desired programs drag in what they need.

Might not be the most elegant solution, but you could list the
installed packages to a file on each system using either "rpm" or
"dnf", then "sort" each file and finally "comm" to reduce down to the
packages that are only on the old system.

I can see a number of messages mcfo...@bellsouth.net on the list, so at
some point the address was subscribed to the list. If it no longer
exists then it must have been removed, either by accident or
intentionally. That would explain the message you're getting, which is
clearly an automated response from the list software, not a personal
reply from the list maintainers (users-ow...@lists.fedoraproject.org).
They are the only ones who can help in restoring the missing address.

In your original post you mentioned subscribing a new email address
without creating an account. I don't understand what you mean by that.
AFAIK subscribing to the Users list doesn't require you to create any
kind of account.

My address is also on Gmail but I use Evolution for mailing lists and

not remove Content-Type: text/plain sections from sent mail, and I
seriously doubt that the list processing software would do this to
received mail (there are abundant counterexamples).

IIRC your other posts on this list don't have this problem, so I'd
suspect an issue with TBird or with your config.

Sorry Patrick, I have my Thunderbird composition sending settings set to
"Automatic" which it says is "If no styling is in the message it will
send plain text, otherwise it will send html with a plain text backup".
I am now using a gmail email address, with your comment does that mean

Most of my other posts in this list were from my ISP's mail address
which is now dead (my ISP transferred mail support to a company that
charges for the service, which apparently the ISP paid for the first 12
months for, but I have refused to pay the subscription since, so the
company has disabled that email address), but they were using the same
options in Thunderbird, but because I'm using the daily version of
Thunderbird there may be issues on that front. I don't want to turn off
sending in html because that will impact all emails I send, and
Thunderbird doesn't have the option any more to tailor those options for
specific addresses.

Hello from Fedora mailing-lists!

You are receiving this e-mail because you or someone else has requested a
password for your user account. However, we do not have any record of a user
with email mcfo...@bellsouth.net in our database.

This mail can be safely ignored if you did not request a password reset.

If it was you, you can sign up for an account using the link below.

https://lists.fedoraproject.org/accounts/signup/

Thank you for using Fedora mailing-lists!
lists.fedoraproject.org

Here I get into a loop

Account creation for the Fedora mailing-lists is done by creating an
account in FAS .

Created an account but from the account page there is no way to access
the list

Maybe start by looking at the journal (e.g. 'journalctrl -xe'). You
could also ask on the Fedora KDE list.

Hi Patrick,
Just an off topic question, I've switched to a new email address

don't see any I send.

Do you know why this would be occurring? I've sent 4 emails to the

I'd recommend you contact the list maintainers directly at
users-ow...@lists.fedoraproject.org

Thanks Patrick, I'll contact the maintainers around this. The mails I'm
sending are making the list because I'm getting replies to them, I just
can't see the original mail, plus when I reply to mails those replies
are not showing up for me either. Could the issue be that I am using a

password I supplied?

Is that anything different than this: (essentially a cache)
https://fedoramagazine.org/use-the-dnf-local-plugin-to-speed-up-your-home-lab/

For which the only benefit is if you use two or more machines through
it (their DNF updates use what you've cached, rather than the outside
world), and only if they're installing the same things.

Those other *machines* could be physical hardware, or virtual.

Copied from that link above:

"Repository management

"The local repository will accumulate files over time. Among the files
will be many versions of rpms that change frequently. The kernel rpms
are one such example. A system upgrade (for example upgrading from
Fedora Linux 33 to Fedora Linux 34) will copy many rpms into the local
repository. The dnf repomanage command can be used to remove outdated
rpm archives."

There's probably an option about seeing your own messages. *Perhaps*
the default is "no" and you need an account to set it differently.

If you use some mail service like Gmail, there may also be filtering
options regarding your own messages.

Hi,
How do I remove kmod-nvidia packages from _dnf_local when sudo dnf remove kmod-nvidia-6.10.10-200.fc40.x86_64 says the package is not found and there is nothing to do and sudo akmods --force won't rebuild it because the 6.10.10 kernel headers don't exist any more and sudo dnf clean all doesn't remove them either?

_dnf_local is just a way of saying not installed from a repo I believe.

What does dnf list installed ‘*nvidia*’ report?
Do you see the kmod-nvidia version listed that you are trying to remove?

dnf list installed *nvidia* doesn't list the kmod-nvidia version I
am trying to remove.
dnf list *nvidia* does list the kmod-nvidia version I am trying to
remove, snippet below.

kmod-nvidia-6.10.10-200.fc40.x86_64.x86_64
3:560.35.03-1.fc40
 _dnf_local

  kmod-nvidia-6.10.11-200.fc40.x86_64.x86_64
3:560.35.03-1.fc40
 _dnf_local

I can get rid of the second listed kmod-nvidia entry as I can build
that version because that kernel still exists, but I can't build the
first listed kmod-nvidia as that kernel isn't installed and doesn't
appear to be in any repositories, only 6.10.12, 6.11.3 and 6.11.4
appear to be available.I just checked k my f40 system with akmod nvidia. It does not have a _dnf_local repo.What does dnf repolist show you have?If it lists a _dnf_local then show us what its repo file has in it.

List manually installed packages for a machine migration

2024-10-24 Thread Jeffrey Walton
Hi Everyone,

I have some old hardware that needs a refresh. The old machine is
running Fedora 40 x86_64 fully patched. The new machine is running the
same on a fresh OS install. I want to get a list of packages I
manually installed on the old machine, like Certbot, Emacs and Nginx,
so I can configure the new machine.

According to

and , `dnf repoquery
--userinstalled` should list user installed packages.

However, I am seeing stuff I did not install. For example, on the new
machine, I only installed Zile (in place of Emacs due to Bug
#2316238). The other packages seem to be due system install or system
update.

$ dnf repoquery --userinstalled
authselect-0:1.5.0-6.fc40.x86_64
efibootmgr-0:18-6.fc40.x86_64
grub2-efi-x64-1:2.06-123.fc40.x86_64
grub2-tools-1:2.06-123.fc40.x86_64
grub2-tools-extra-1:2.06-123.fc40.x86_64
grubby-0:8.40-75.fc40.x86_64
kernel-0:6.11.4-201.fc40.x86_64
kernel-0:6.8.5-301.fc40.x86_64
langpacks-en-0:4.0-13.fc40.noarch
lvm2-0:2.03.25-1.fc40.x86_64
nvme-cli-0:2.8-1.fc40.x86_64
shim-x64-0:15.8-3.x86_64
xfsprogs-0:6.5.0-3.fc40.x86_64
zile-0:2.6.2-5.fc40.x86_64

Does anyone know of a good strategy (or have a script) to list
manually installed packages; and not include automatically installed
packages that were part of the original install or a system update?

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

I took a look at switchdesk in Xfce (fired up with startx).
It does not find MATE.

Lightdm does find MATE, but won't run it as xinit is

mate-sessions fire up xinit, so I am screwed on that front.

This is interesting, switchdesk has a command line

And "man switchdesk" show no list option.

But since it does not find MATE, poop!
