The link works actually if you cut and paste into a web browser, but hitting "ok", when it asks if it should download it for you results in a timeout. Dunno if this is a server side issue at sun or if the virtualbox way of downloading in the background is just brittle somehow. [Bug 289000] [NEW] serious networking problems (lags, stalls) with dell inspiron 640m
Public bug reported: serious networking problems (lags, stalls) with dell inspiron 640m I just upgraded an inspiron 640m with intel wireless and broadcom ethernet from hardy to *intrepid rc1* today and ran into a lot of continuing network lag and stalls. Here is the networking hardware: 0c:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection [8086:4222] (rev 02) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX [14e4:170c] (rev 02) After upgrade completes, I get serious intermittent lag before the system transfers any serious amount of data on both wireless and wired connections. Can someone change the release notes header to read "Severe Connectivity Problems caused by Enabled TCP Timestamps behind older routers". the heading "TCP Timestamps" says nothing that will catch the eye of someone reading the release notes before an upgrade. Please also put "Verizon" in bold. This is a really big, problem. A dangerous one for linux in terms of impressions. When 20% of ubuntu users on the east coast of the U.S. are going to drop off the net on upgrade, you want to warn them first. We also need to pressure Verizon (Westtel) and Netgear to get their shit together. [Bug 287328] Re: After Upgrade to 8.10: Keyboard & Mouse Issues after using keyboard to change the display brightness
I am also currently affected by this bug in Intrepid. It may have been there last week as well, or it may have appeared in intrepid in the last couple of days. It's bad in that folks could get frustrated and lose their work if they are using gtk based apps where file menus are failing to work. The above is a great description of this bug... but see below for my take on it: The only thing that I would add is that a single press of the keyboard brightness adjustment combo (Fn + down arrow) seems to register as if the key was constantly down... i.e. brightness goes from 100% and rapidly shrinks to 0% after only one light keypress. The repeated phantom "keypresses" start as soon as you release the Fn key in the combo. For me the brightness heads-up display widget also stays in the foreground on top of other windows. With these phantom keypresses perhaps the keyboard buffer could be staying filled and this could be causing the keyboard malfunctions and the menus failing to appear on mouseclick? Menus on apps which aren't GTK based still seem to work, perhaps the display of non-gtk menus aren't interrupted by the continual keyboard events? I am on an Inspiron 640m with intel graphics. I am running Compiz, but this bug also manifests with Compiz disabled. -- After Upgrade to 8.10: Keyboard & Mouse Issues after using keyboard to change the display brightness https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/287328 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

OK, so finally was able to google enough to find what was needed to restart the mouse this issue, but still don't understand why there was a regression in ubuntu on this, and don't know what the longterm fix is. On Fedora 11 Naresh Kumar posted the following issue with a workaround at the below link. Basically, the bcm5974 driver is getting loaded after X.org is restarted after resume. Because the driver is loaded so late, the touchpad is not configured by X. if your mouse freezes, you can manually remove the kernel driver and then renable it to start up the mouse again: sudo /sbin/rmmod bcm5974 sudo /sbin/modprobe bcm5974 He provides a script that you can place in /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d in section 14. in the below post: http://nareshv.blogspot.com/2009/06/fedora-11-64-bit-final-on-macbook-pro.html Here's the deal... is this the ultimate fix, or a workaround? Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus This is a bug in the gnome file / save dialogue. If nautilus isn't the right place to file this, please move it. Description: When saving a file from any application, and wishing to create a new folder to contain the file, clicking on the Create Folder button has the effect of selecting the first item in the list of visible files and placing the cursor in the name of the first item, rather than creating a new "Type name of new folder" folder and placing the cursor there to edit it. Reproducibility: Only happens to me when the default, natural sort of the files in the save file dialog results in a file (not a directory) being the first (top) item in the list. [Bug 397211] Re: Shiretoko user agent string breaks compatibilty with major websites
Not all web browsers have the same capabilities. When dealing with widely different classes of browsers, say mobile versus desktop, sniffing the useragent string is a reasonable way to get information from the client to deal with issues like screen sizes etc. Libraries like WURFL ensure that these days, this is not a suicidal treadmill of work, as long as browsers with known capabilities don't change their useragent strings for no reason*. This creates more work for everyone. It's certainly nuts to be relying heavily on useragent sniffing for anything as fundamental as delivering text content to desktop browsers these days, but the alternative is javascript or even worse in some cases where one has to build richly interactive content that 1) validates and 2) sings and or dances and 3) looks great. Many times delivering different markup to different browsers is not needed, but occasionally it is. The HTML5 transition especially is a time to be explicit about browser capabilities, unless you don't care about page weight for all of the alternative markup / workarounds / hacks you're going to be delivered, or missing the content you're going to see the fallback version of. Not consistently identifying clients capable of using this new tech is going to keep people from implementing new stuff on the server. Not everyone can upgrade their browsers. If new browsers identify themselves consistently, the server guys can move forward with you without dumping corporate America or that old library computer, or last year's shiny mobile phone. Again 95% of the time, there should be no need to do this, but serving HTML5 or SVG for instance to a mobile browser from 2005 is bad news. Oh, you say we should wrap those nice new elements in javascript to prevent them from displaying to the wrong browsers? Wait, what was the point of plain HTML again? *I certainly understand if this is a legal issue (trademark) or an ideological one (web standards maybe). However, at the moment, whoever is in charge of this part of the ranch is giving the impression of total unaccountability to users as time passes without an explanation or fix. I get yelled at every time I log into karmic that my drive is failing. The reallocated sector count has not changed in a month of heavy usage, so I don't think it's a drive in collapsing condition. I would also like an error dialog that says something like Caution! Your drive has a high number of reallocated sectors, which may be a result of failing hardware. Currently the drive reports it is *passing* SMART checks, which are designed to detect a failing drive, so this warning may be incorrect. Certain types of storage such as solid state drives (ssds) have large numbers of reallocated sectors to extend their life. It is recommended that you back up your data in case your drive is about to fail. What would you like to do now: > Display the error messages and stats > Inform me if the drive health further deteriorates Naturally the scary warnings wouldn't be tempered if the SMART status was actually failing. What do you say? I love Palimpest, but people will ignore the warnings if every netbook and SSD drive cries wolf. -- palimpsest bad sectors false positive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438136 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 458469] [NEW] Karmic: Mouse pointer freezes on resume
Public bug reported: I have a Macbook Air 1,1 running the Karmic beta. When I resume from suspend, the mouse pointer does not reactivate, remaining stuck wherever it last was. The keyboard is fully functional. I don't know whether the file this against the x-server-intel or against the power management system. Description:Ubuntu 9.10 Repeatability: Always Observed behavior: the mouse is frozen on resume; the keyboard works Expected behavior: the mouse should work too. I have the karmic versions of gpomme and pommed from the mactel ppa installed in order to run the keyboard sensors and backlight. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Karmic: Mouse pointer freezes on resume https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/458469 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 458469] Re: Karmic: Mouse pointer freezes on resume
Two more data points: * Removing gpomme and pommed and restarting the computer does not help resolve this suspend / resume issue. * I am running the "Normal" Visual Effects on the GPU (Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)) The mouse is: * Apple, Inc. [Bug 458469] Re: Karmic: Mouse pointer freezes on resume
here is /var/log/messages during the suspend / resume process. (closing the lid until the lights go out and the sleep indicator goes on, then opening the lid and logging into the machine.) * The mouse pointer is frozen even on the gnome screensaver login screen. * I don't know why there is no break in the timestamps in the log between suspend and resume, maybe part of the suspend process is time suspension (?) P.S. this is an upgrade (through upgrade manager) from Jaunty (where suspend resume has worked fine for 6 months), this is not a new conversion from MacOS. -- Karmic: Mouse pointer freezes on resume https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/458469 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 658069] Re: Empty files written over gvfs by some editors
Looks like there is a patch to gvfs upstream. Looks like it it is still a bit of a workaround? https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=627567#c9 Tomas seems to indicate this is originally a problem with fuse? [Bug 458469] Re: Karmic: Mouse pointer freezes on resume
tdh. your solution works! Thank you for the tip about setting up userspace hibernation/suspend. However I don't know what to do about the core issue that stock ubuntu doesn't resume properly on macbook air 1,1.I've put a link back to this bug in the macbook 1,1 wiki page pointing out the regression, and our workarounds.
