I have a similar issue with a wacom tablet completely not working (mouse frozen in center of screen on login). When I try to reconfigure the graphics card and detect hardware etc.. (either through bulletproof X or through dpkg-reconfigure) I get just a black screen. When I accept the lowest fallback graphics, I get a low-rez login with a frozen mouse.
