Restarted computer , uninstalled all other java packages, deleted
~/.eclipse... ran from commandline... no help and no debugging
information. ... it creates the workspace dir and then hangs.  Another
piece of info: I am on amd64.

Starting from the commandline the last time I got:

I: Injected update sites

Dunno what that means...

Then I tried starting with -debug.  It gives me the following info....
also not very helpful.. all of this occurs before choosing the
workspace.
