[Bug 303952] [NEW] thumbnail-making in nautilus taking all memory
Public bug reported: Nautilus is taking all memory and is rampaging the hard disk when it tries to generate thumbnails for images scanned in bitmap mode (png or tiff in 2-bit per pixels for me) but in very high definition (over 1x1 but in bitmap it gives you an image that is weighting only 700ko)...below 1, it's getting a hard time but it generates the thumbnailsbut over 1 I can't see the end of the generating of the thumbnail, it goes on and onmaybe it's because it's trying to smooth the thumbnailbecause no problem to open an image like this in mtpaint...but in gimp it's all the same problem that I have in nautilus taking the ram to a point there is not enough an then goes to hard disk to continue it's operation. I can see that programs that generates thumbnails can process those images with no effort, I think it's because they get the embedded thumbnail of the tiffbut if it tries to generate one it's nightmare ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- thumbnail-making in nautilus taking all memory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303952 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I haven't tried it yet. I'll try it when I get home from work. Will Ubuntu recognize the same drivers that Windows uses? I still have Windows on my system, I could just pull the drivers from the Windows directory. Thing is, I do not know how to install them in Ubuntu. [Bug 284267] [NEW] update crashed x.org configuration
Public bug reported: after the latest automatic update (cupsys and kernel update) I was asked to restart my computer. Upon doing I got a message at the log-in saying that I I could only run in low resolution mode (640*480). I reinstalled the nvidia driver using EnvyNG and I tried to modify the resolution using nvidia x server settings. Unfortunately the biggest screen resolution it supported was the aforementioned 640*480, which basically renders my useless my ubuntu os (see attached picture). I kept having resolution problems ever since I updated to hardy heron, Gutsy was working just fine when it came to handling my screen. [Bug 253740] Re: Keyboard freeze after some time
Hello, I upgraded to 8.10 from 8.04 2 days ago, and I am having the same issues described here. In addition sometimes I am no longer able to click on the menus bars to access applications. I can still move the menu bars around, but clicking on Applications only depresses the button...the list of applications never appear, then I will have issues when I am no longer able to type in any application (although I can still hit ctrl+alt+bksp to kill X11). A logout or a reboot usually fixes this problem temporarily. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 running 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP with a Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG wireless card which I am always using. [Bug 287328] Re: After Upgrade to 8.10: Keyboard & Mouse Issues after using keyboard to change the display brightness
Our problems seem just a little different. In my case, when I hit Fn + up or down to change the brightness, it only moves the brightness up or down one level and I never get a brightness indicator box. So it does not appear in my case that the keyboard input is stuck. Also, when this happens I can not type anything, but the crtl+alt+backspace does allow me to terminate my X session. Also I have noticed that I can continue to adjust the brightness up and down using the keyboard, just can't type any text or access the menu items using the mouse. The original filing of this bug was with an upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10. I have since performed a full reinstall and even tried to configure my xorg.conf using the nvidia settings tool. In either case, the result was the same segmentation fault. I should note that when starting X stand-alone it appears works fine with Xinerama enabled. [Bug 287328] [NEW] After Upgrade to 8.10: Keyboard & Mouse Issues after using keyboard to change the display brightness
Public bug reported: I upgraded to 8.10 a few days ago, and at first I thought I was having random keyboard/mouse lock-up issues. I then thought this problem only happened when I switched to battery power. I have finally figured out that this problem only happens when I use the function keys on my keyboard to change the display brightness. If I use the LCD brightness app I do not have a problem. When this problem happens Ubuntu no longer accepts any input from the keyboard (except ctrl+alt+bksp to kill X11), the mouse still moves and allows me to perform left mouse clicks inside of applications and to items in the status bars, but menu items will not appear when clicked (the menu item depresses, but the listing never shows). I have worked around this problem for now by disabling the auto dim when switching to power mode, and only using the lcd brightness app, but out of habit I accidentally still hit the function keys on the keyboard, so this still bites me sometimes. Restarting X11 fixes this issue. System Info: Dell Inspiron 6400 Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 Upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 Please let me know if there is anything more that I should include. [Bug 90378] Re: Should make downloaded files-read only
I also find this change highly annoying. I guess I understand why people who are new to Linux would not understand that saving their important files in /tmp is bad. But to people who have used Linux for a long time and are accustom to the old functionality this is really intrusive. For myself I have lots of reports that are downloaded from the web or email. I open these reports in open office, change the sorting or formatting to take a look at the data, then close the file. I don't care about the changes that I have made, I just wanted to look at the data a different way for the moment. So it works out really well that these files are saved to /tmp and eventually automatically deleted. Since Openoffice does not allow you to change anything about a file when its read only, not even change the sort order, I have to open the file, save it (in /tmp), just to change the sort order. I am okay with the default functionality the way it is for the Linux newbies, but I need an option in both Firefox and Thunderbird that allows me to use the applications like I have for years. Does anyone know of a way to do this? [Bug 327037] [NEW] mouse detected as keyboard
Public bug reported: When I first installed Ubuntu, I noticed that my mouse stayed on after my computer shut down. I also noticed that when this happens, my mouse does not work (no movement, clicks, or anything) until I unplug it and plug it back in. Now, after much research, a BIOS update, and much playing with BIOS settings, I've managed to get the lights on the mouse to turn off when the computer turns off. But it still doesn't work after a shutdown or restart without me replugging it. I don't get this effect in Windows, so that leads me to believe it isn't hardware related. Also of note is if I shutdown in Ubuntu and boot into Windows, I do get the effect, but if I shutdown in Windows and boot into Ubuntu I don't. ** Attachment added: "Xorg.0.log after unplug&replug" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/22330241/Xorg.0.log.after ** Description changed: When I first installed Ubuntu, I noticed that my mouse stayed on after my computer shut down. [Bug 327037] Re: mouse detected as keyboard
Well it looks like this may be a duplicate of a much older bug, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to link the two. It's bug 74069. As to the comments in that bug: I can confirm that going to a terminal and typing "sudo shutdown -h now" works. When you turn the computer back on the mouse will work properly (as contrasted to "sudo shutdown -hP now", which makes it not work). I can also confirm that a firmware update on the mouse seems to have corrected the shutdown problem. I can now use the Shutdown choice on the Gnome menu to shut down the computer and the mouse still works when it comes back up. However, I do note that both dmesg and Xorg are still recognizing my mouse as both a keyboard and a mouse. I also noted that it seems to be picking up something as a "Macintosh mouse" (always was, by the looks of it, I just didn't notice). I guess it's worth noting that the only USB devices I have connected to the computer are the Razer Copperhead and the G15 keyboard. I have no PS/2 devices connected. No clue where this Macintosh thing is coming from. Also, I forgot to note originally that I'm running the 64-bit kernel. -- mouse detected as keyboard https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/327037 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 157610] display freezes just before Ubuntu login window; shows nothing but vertical bars
Public bug reported: I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 on a Compaq Proteva PC. All software updates have been applied as of 10-26-2007 12:00 UTC. I have an intermittent gdm freeze-up which occurs unpredictably. Everything during the boot proceeds normally until just before the moment where the main Ubuntu login window would appear, after which the swirling 'busy' icon freezes, the screen goes bank momentarily, followed by a screen full of alternating blue, green, and black vertical bars. The system hangs in this state and never recovers. No Ubuntu login bongo sounds are heard, and it is impossible to drop down to a command prompt via Ctrl+Alt+F*. The only remedy I've found so far is to to a hard reboot, switch to recovery mode for kernel 2.6.22-14, type "sudo shutdown -r now", reboot again, which always results in a successful loading of gdm. On the Ubuntu forums someone mentined I should post the output of /var/gdm/0:.log. [Bug 114522] Re: sound (ALC880) does not work in Feisty
After some more tests and discussion on alsa-dev ML, I can consider the solution provided above as a valuable workaround. I think that the bug can be cancelled from launchpad, because probe_mask=1 allows sound to work. Moreover it seems that this has nothing to do with the kernel. Only Alsa modifications may make this behaviour to disappear. This seems to be related to the fact that the sound card is a mixed card "sound & modem" such as described in [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ aplay -l Liste des PLAYBACK périphériques carte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], périphérique 0 : ALC880 Analog [ALC880 Analog] Sous-périphériques: 1/1 Sous-périphérique: #0: subdevice #0 carte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], périphérique 6 : Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem] Sous-périphériques: 1/1 Sous-périphérique: #0: subdevice #0 So, as a conclusion, in order to have such a sound card to work it is necessary to have the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base : options snd-hda-intel model=clevo probe_mask=1 the model may vary depending on the laptop, but "probe_mask=1" IS ncecessary. For more information, see alsa-dev mailing-list archive for "Alsa 1.0.13 (and others) does not work on ALC880" topic. [Bug 127941] Re: ps3-utils not installed with xubuntu

[Bug 127941] Re: ps3-utils not installed with xubuntu
When there was a seperate Cell arch target for Xubuntu it was possible to install it post-install, I have not tested yet with the latest Hardy beta (the kernel driver problems with recent versions of the PS3's hypervisor have caused issues with my testbed). It would be preferable to have it install automatically, as ps3-utils contains the utilities needed to set output format, thus allowing the PS3 to correctly output to DVI connected displays and HDTVs.
