[Bug 303952] [NEW] thumbnail-making in nautilus taking all memory

2008-12-01 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

Nautilus is taking all memory and is rampaging the hard disk when it tries to
generate thumbnails for images scanned in bitmap mode (png or tiff in 2-bit per
pixels for me) but in very high definition (over 1x1 but in bitmap it
gives you an image that is weighting only 700ko)...below 1, it's getting a
hard time but it generates the thumbnailsbut over 1 I can't see the end
of the generating of the thumbnail, it goes on and onmaybe it's because
it's trying to smooth the thumbnailbecause no problem to open an image like
this in mtpaint...but in gimp it's all the same problem that I have in nautilus
taking the ram to a point there is not enough an then goes to hard disk to
continue it's operation.
I can see that programs that generates thumbnails can process those images with
no effort, I think it's because they get the embedded thumbnail of the
tiffbut if it tries to generate one it's nightmare

[Bug 371740] [NEW] DVD ROM / DVD RW drives not working

2009-05-04 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

My DVD ROM and DVD RW drives do not seem to be working. I put a CD in
and Ubuntu crashed. I had to use the power button to reboot. I'm using

drivers", but the only thing that was there was drivers for my display.
I have an ActivClient CAC card reader and I want to be able to use it

RE: [Bug 371740] Re: DVD ROM / DVD RW drives not working

2009-05-05 Thread Eric

I haven't tried it yet. I'll try it when I get home from work. Will Ubuntu
recognize the same drivers that Windows uses? I still have Windows on my
system, I could just pull the drivers from the Windows directory. Thing is, I
do not know how to install them in Ubuntu.

[Bug 284267] [NEW] update crashed x.org configuration

2008-10-16 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

after the latest automatic update (cupsys and kernel update) I was asked
to restart my computer. Upon doing I got a message at the log-in saying
that I I could only run in low resolution mode (640*480). I reinstalled
the nvidia driver using EnvyNG and I tried to modify the resolution
using nvidia x server settings. Unfortunately the biggest screen
resolution it supported was the aforementioned 640*480, which basically
renders my useless my ubuntu os (see attached picture).

I kept having resolution problems ever since I updated to hardy heron,
Gutsy was working just fine when it came to handling my screen. In gutsy
i never even had to touch the nvidia x setting, i just installed the
driver and I could pick my resolution from the "monitor resolution" app.

However this seems to be the most serious problem.

I use an nvidia 7300 video card and a 17 inch samsung sync-master 793 df
monitor (for which my prefered reolution is 1280*1024).

Thanks

[Bug 293086] Re: firefox starts in fulscreen by default

2008-11-04 Thread Eric
disabling the desktop effects works! don't actually know why it does
though, but it works definitely works.

however I am too fond of the desktop cube, therefore I still rather
pressing the F11 button whenever I start firefox:)

I didn't find a "change default viewing mode" in firefox, and "View" --
"Fullscreen" is ticked off by default.

[Bug 253740] Re: Keyboard freeze after some time

2008-10-20 Thread Eric
Hello,
I upgraded to 8.10 from 8.04 2 days ago, and I am having the same issues
described here. In addition sometimes I am no longer able to click on the
menus bars to access applications. I can still move the menu bars around, but
clicking on Applications only depresses the button...the list of applications
never appear, then I will have issues when I am no longer able to type in any
application (although I can still hit ctrl+alt+bksp to kill X11). A logout or
a reboot usually fixes this problem temporarily. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400
running 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP with a Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG
wireless card which I am always using. Please let me know if there is any more
info that I can provide that would be useful.

Thanks

Eric

[Bug 253740] Re: Keyboard freeze after some time

2008-10-20 Thread Eric
This could be a coincidence, but it does seem that I am seeing this
problem more (maybe even only) when I am running on battery power. I
have been running all day with no problem, until a few mins ago when I
unplugged my power adapter. The next action I made caused my keyboard
input to stop working.

Thanks

[Bug 287328] Re: After Upgrade to 8.10: Keyboard & Mouse Issues after using keyboard to change the display brightness

2008-11-02 Thread Eric
Our problems seem just a little different. In my case, when I hit Fn +
up or down to change the brightness, it only moves the brightness up or
down one level and I never get a brightness indicator box. So it does
not appear in my case that the keyboard input is stuck. Also, when this
happens I can not type anything, but the crtl+alt+backspace does allow
me to terminate my X session. Also I have noticed that I can continue
to adjust the brightness up and down using the keyboard, just can't type
any text or access the menu items using the mouse.

Thanks

[Bug 290821] Re: gdm doesn't start with xinerama, segmentation fault in seahorse-agent running x-session-manager

2008-10-30 Thread Eric
The original filing of this bug was with an upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10. I
have since performed a full reinstall and even tried to configure my
xorg.conf using the nvidia settings tool. In either case, the result was
the same segmentation fault.

I should note that when starting X stand-alone it appears works fine
with Xinerama enabled.

Should I abandon gnome and try switching to kubuntu? It seems that
Xinerama in 8.10 is broken.

[Bug 287328] [NEW] After Upgrade to 8.10: Keyboard & Mouse Issues after using keyboard to change the display brightness

2008-10-21 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to 8.10 a few days ago, and at first I thought I was having
random keyboard/mouse lock-up issues. I then thought this problem only
happened when I switched to battery power. I have finally figured out
that this problem only happens when I use the function keys on my
keyboard to change the display brightness. If I use the LCD brightness
app I do not have a problem.

When this problem happens Ubuntu no longer accepts any input from the
keyboard (except ctrl+alt+bksp to kill X11), the mouse still moves and
allows me to perform left mouse clicks inside of applications and to
items in the status bars, but menu items will not appear when clicked
(the menu item depresses, but the listing never shows).

I have worked around this problem for now by disabling the auto dim when
switching to power mode, and only using the lcd brightness app, but out
of habit I accidentally still hit the function keys on the keyboard, so
this still bites me sometimes.

Restarting X11 fixes this issue.

System Info:
Dell Inspiron 6400
Nvidia GeForce Go 7300

Upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10

Please let me know if there is anything more that I should include.

Thanks

[Bug 90378] Re: Should make downloaded files-read only

2008-06-05 Thread Eric
I also find this change highly annoying. I guess I understand why
people who are new to Linux would not understand that saving their
important files in /tmp is bad. But to people who have used Linux for a
long time and are accustom to the old functionality this is really
intrusive. For myself I have lots of reports that are downloaded from
the web or email. I open these reports in open office, change the
sorting or formatting to take a look at the data, then close the file.
I don't care about the changes that I have made, I just wanted to look
at the data a different way for the moment. So it works out really well
that these files are saved to /tmp and eventually automatically deleted.
Since Openoffice does not allow you to change anything about a file when
its read only, not even change the sort order, I have to open the file,
save it (in /tmp), just to change the sort order. I am okay with the
default functionality the way it is for the Linux newbies, but I need an
option in both Firefox and Thunderbird that allows me to use the
applications like I have for years.

Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Thanks

Eric

[Bug 246381] Re: APT daily cronjobs hangs, prevents other cronjobs to be executed

2009-01-02 Thread Eric

I had the same problem. To solve it, I narrowed the search to the function
random_sleep.. It sleeps... 30 min

# sleep for a random intervall of time (default 30min)
# (some code taken from cron-apt, thanks)
random_sleep()
{
RandomSleep=1800
eval $(apt-config shell RandomSleep APT::Periodic::RandomSleep)
if [ $RandomSleep -eq 0 ]; then
return
fi
if [ -z "$RANDOM" ] ; then
# A fix for shells that do not have this bash feature.
RANDOM=$(dd if=/dev/urandom count=1 2> /dev/null | cksum | cut -c"1-5")
fi
TIME=$(($RANDOM % $RandomSleep))
sleep $TIME
}

Very odd, I just commented it at apt, line 222, and It's working again.

[Bug 197589] Re: Numeric keypad no longer works after upgrade

2009-01-21 Thread Eric

I've checked all the comments.

It's NOT solved. There's a temporary workaround with "Mouse Keys and
deselect [ ] Enable keyboard accessibility features"

But It's only TEMPORARY.

Without pressing Shift-NumLock, It's being enabled again.

Thanks,
Eric

[Bug 327037] [NEW] mouse detected as keyboard

2009-02-08 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

When I first installed Ubuntu, I noticed that my mouse stayed on after
my computer shut down. I also noticed that when this happens, my mouse
does not work (no movement, clicks, or anything) until I unplug it and
plug it back in.

Now, after much research, a BIOS update, and much playing with BIOS
settings, I've managed to get the lights on the mouse to turn off when
the computer turns off. But it still doesn't work after a shutdown or
restart without me replugging it. I don't get this effect in Windows,
so that leads me to believe it isn't hardware related. Also of note is
if I shutdown in Ubuntu and boot into Windows, I do get the effect, but
if I shutdown in Windows and boot into Ubuntu I don't.

Looking recently at my log files and various things, I noticed that my
computer seems to be detecting my mouse as a keyboard and then
redetecting it as a mouse. I've spoken with a few people on IRC about
it and have been advised to open a bug report, so here I am. I'll
attach my Xorg.0.log and the results of dmesg both when the mouse isn't
working and when I've unplugged & replugged it.

results of lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

It's a Razer Copperhead mouse.

Let me know if you need any other information.

[Bug 327037] Re: mouse detected as keyboard

2009-02-10 Thread Eric
Well it looks like this may be a duplicate of a much older bug, but I
can't for the life of me figure out how to link the two. It's bug
74069.

As to the comments in that bug:
I can confirm that going to a terminal and typing "sudo shutdown -h now" works.
When you turn the computer back on the mouse will work properly (as contrasted
to "sudo shutdown -hP now", which makes it not work).

I can also confirm that a firmware update on the mouse seems to have
corrected the shutdown problem. I can now use the Shutdown choice on
the Gnome menu to shut down the computer and the mouse still works when
it comes back up.

However, I do note that both dmesg and Xorg are still recognizing my
mouse as both a keyboard and a mouse. I also noted that it seems to be
picking up something as a "Macintosh mouse" (always was, by the looks of
it, I just didn't notice). I guess it's worth noting that the only USB
devices I have connected to the computer are the Razer Copperhead and
the G15 keyboard. I have no PS/2 devices connected. No clue where this
Macintosh thing is coming from.

Also, I forgot to note originally that I'm running the 64-bit kernel.

[Bug 399806] [NEW] CPU scaling does not work on Core2 CPU core 0

2009-07-15 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

When my Intel Core2 E6600 is running at stock clocking under heavy load,
only CPU 1 scales up to max speed (2.40GHz). CPU 0 stays at 1.63 GHz,
even if the governor policy is set to "performance" (the default is
"ondemand") on both CPUs. cpufreq-info always reports "current policy:
frequency should be within 1.63 GHz and 1.63 GHz" regardless of what the
frequency governor policy is for CPU 0. CPU 1 seems to work fine.

[Bug 401282] Re: Torbutton works with Firefox-3.5

2009-07-26 Thread Eric
Firefox 3.5 is being targeted for Karmic 9.10 as the default browser. I
think "A bug that has a moderate impact on a core application" is a more
appropriate description than "A bug that has a moderate impact on a non-
core application", and hence should be "Medium" importance as per the
Bugs/Importance BugSquad KnowledgeBase article.

without log files I cannot be sure. Eric, if you can reproduce this bug
with Ubuntu 6.06.1, please reopen this bug and attach
/var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman. Anyone

[Bug 156041] gnome-app-install - "ldconfig deferred processing now taking place" does not end

2007-10-22 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-app-install

I upgraded from festy to gutsy.

Now, when I install something, the installer gnome-app-install ends with
"ldconfig deferred processing now taking place" and never ends !!!

So I kill gksu to recover.

I reproduced it installing/uninstalling Kopete.

I can install and uninstall Kopete with System/Administration/Synaptic,
but not with Apps/Add/Remove.

It's somewhat related with gnome-app-install "Apps/Add/Remove" (WRONG)
vs synaptic - "System/Administration/Synaptic" (OK).

I think everytime a I kill ldconfig the system deteriorates. So I remove
and reinstall with synaptic.

Thanks
Eric

[Bug 157610] display freezes just before Ubuntu login window; shows nothing but vertical bars

2007-10-26 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 on a Compaq Proteva PC. All software updates have
been applied as of 10-26-2007 12:00 UTC.

I have an intermittent gdm freeze-up which occurs unpredictably.
Everything during the boot proceeds normally until just before the
moment where the main Ubuntu login window would appear, after which the
swirling 'busy' icon freezes, the screen goes bank momentarily, followed
by a screen full of alternating blue, green, and black vertical bars.

The system hangs in this state and never recovers. No Ubuntu login bongo
sounds are heard, and it is impossible to drop down to a command prompt
via Ctrl+Alt+F*. The only remedy I've found so far is to to a hard
reboot, switch to recovery mode for kernel 2.6.22-14, type "sudo
shutdown -r now", reboot again, which always results in a successful
loading of gdm.

On the Ubuntu forums someone mentined I should post the output of
/var/gdm/0:.log. Here is the output from that file immediately following
the crash:

[Bug 150592] No Sound with RealTek HD Audio on Asus A7T (Alc882)

2007-10-08 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

Im running Ubuntu Guest Beta and Im unable to get sound working on my
AsusA7t. Ive tried almost everything so im willing to just start from
scratch to get things working. The card detects fine from a fresh
install, however there is no sound at all. When installing new alsa
drivers, the card then fails to detect after a reboot. Ive also tried
the drivers from the RealTek site to no avail.

[Bug 114522] Re: sound (ALC880) does not work in Feisty

2007-05-22 Thread Eric
After some more tests and discussion on alsa-dev ML, I can consider the
solution provided above as a valuable workaround. I think that the bug can be
cancelled from launchpad, because probe_mask=1 allows sound to work. Moreover
it seems that this has nothing to do with the kernel. Only Alsa modifications
may make this behaviour to disappear.
This seems to be related to the fact that the sound card is a mixed card "sound
& modem" such as described in

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ aplay -l
 Liste des PLAYBACK périphériques
carte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], périphérique 0 : ALC880 Analog [ALC880 Analog]
  Sous-périphériques: 1/1
  Sous-périphérique: #0: subdevice #0
carte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], périphérique 6 : Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Sous-périphériques: 1/1
  Sous-périphérique: #0: subdevice #0

So, as a conclusion, in order to have such a sound card to work it is
necessary to have the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base :

options snd-hda-intel model=clevo probe_mask=1

the model may vary depending on the laptop, but "probe_mask=1" IS
ncecessary.

For more information, see alsa-dev mailing-list archive for "Alsa 1.0.13
(and others) does not work on ALC880" topic.

[Bug 127941] Re: ps3-utils not installed with xubuntu

2008-04-09 Thread Eric
In Hardy it is I believe. Only issue here I would presume is that the
PS3 basically requires ps3-utils for proper operation, but it doesn't
make sense to install it by default on all PowerPC machines. Preferably
the installer would install it if it detected the hardware.

[Bug 127941] Re: ps3-utils not installed with xubuntu

2008-04-09 Thread Eric
When there was a seperate Cell arch target for Xubuntu it was possible
to install it post-install, I have not tested yet with the latest Hardy
beta (the kernel driver problems with recent versions of the PS3's
hypervisor have caused issues with my testbed). It would be preferable
to have it install automatically, as ps3-utils contains the utilities
needed to set output format, thus allowing the PS3 to correctly output
to DVI connected displays and HDTVs. Without it the machine is
essentially not ready for use out of box post-install.

[Bug 223147] [NEW] No music playback through amarok or rhythmbox on specific user account

2008-04-27 Thread Eric
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I am unable to playback music in either Amarok or rhythmbox when logged
in as a certain user. User A can play music with no problem, while User
B can't; the applications (both Amarok and Rhythmbox freeze up and the
applications have to be killed in order to exit.

I'm using 8.04, just upgraded from April 25th.

I'm not sure what else to report; If anyone can provide some hints on
how to troubleshoot this, I can report back with some more information.

Thanks,

~ Eric.

Very strange; I am now unable to replicate this bug. Music playback
through Amarok and Rhythmbox is now fine on all user accounts.

This bug can now be closed.

I have a 4312 and am having the same problem, I even tried a fresh
install from a new disk. I remember that in the beginning of beta 5 it
worked fine. However now the Hardware Drive dialog does not seem to see
the card. I tried to manually setup the b4 driver, still a no go.
