Public bug reported:

after the latest automatic update (cupsys and kernel update) I was asked
to restart my computer. Upon doing I got a message at the log-in saying
that I I could only run in low resolution mode (640*480). I reinstalled
the nvidia driver using EnvyNG and I tried to modify the resolution
using nvidia x server settings. Unfortunately the biggest screen
resolution it supported was the aforementioned 640*480, which basically
renders my useless my ubuntu os (see attached picture).

I kept having resolution problems ever since I updated to hardy heron,
Gutsy was working just fine when it came to handling my screen. In gutsy
i never even had to touch the nvidia x setting, i just installed the
driver and I could pick my resolution from the "monitor resolution" app.

However this seems to be the most serious problem.

I use an nvidia 7300 video card and a 17 inch samsung sync-master 793 df
monitor (for which my prefered reolution is 1280*1024).

Thanks
