[Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
I didn't crash all day today except when I started using vmware. Then I had 3 crashes in 30 mins. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/889706 Title: Gnome-shell randomly crashes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/889706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
Today's crash, no vmware was running. Only difference with today's crash was that it restarted by itself. Was running gedit. Seems if I do certain things (like use terminals + use chrome) I can go hours without a crash. But if I do certain things like use VMware or use gedit, a crash is imminent. Only thing I could gather from logs was: Dec 11 17:44:40 ibm-X61 gnome-session[11214]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.#012 Dec 11 17:44:40 ibm-X61 acpid: client 11101[0:0] has disconnected Dec 11 17:44:40 ibm-X61 acpid: client connected from 21036[0:0] Dec 11 17:44:40 ibm-X61 acpid: 1 client rule loaded -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/889706 Title: Gnome-shell randomly crashes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/889706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
I've since started trying out Linux Mint LMDE. I like Gnome 3 + Mate in Linux Mint 12, but I need stability and performance. [Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
@Vladimir, did you have anything else running in the background? I've found if all I'm running is chrome + terminal + files, I will never crash, no matter how much switching apps I do. And regardless of what sites I have open, or the number of tabs I have open. Just for clarification, I have flash disabled in my chrome (using kill flash extension), but I have it enabled for select sites. But if I startup a vmware or gedit app, I'll crash at some point. I could also try using firefox, and I bet that would crash as well (judging from what others have posted).
@Anton Kuleshov, interesting. I'm not running PowerMizer, but toggling the cpu mode from ondemand to powersave using cpufreq, but experience my crashes seem to be independent of if the cpu is adaptive or not. But perhaps my lite use of chrome doesn't thrust the cpu, but certain activities such as vmware does. So I'll try using vmware with nonadaptive/powersave today and see if I can crash.

[Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
my graphic card is also integrated, so it's not a ATI or Radeon issue. Issue happens on both a Thinkpad T410 with Radeon discrete graphics and on a Thinkpad X61T with intel integrated graphics. In both cases I encounter the freezing/crash or gnome-shell becomes so slow and unresponsive that only a restart of gnome-shell fixes the problem. I have tried everything. The very best scenario of just using terminal and chrome and no other apps, I can avoid the crashes but like I said, the gnome-shell starts slowing down and become slow to respond which forces me to force a restart of the shell so I can get some work done. I have decided to downgrade to either Mint 11 or one of the other Mint flavours. For fun I tried giving a spin for Mint 11 LXDE and Mint 11 LMDE Xfce on two spare machines. Mint 12 is definitely the finniest looking flavour/version, but the instability prevents Mint 12 from being a real contender.

More facts: 1. - using vmware with 3d acceleration checked -> crash EVERYTIME within 30 mins + using vmware with no 3d acceleration checked -> no crash after 3 hours 2. + using chrome (many tabs) -> no crash after hours and days - using chrome navigating to youtube.com and playing a video -> crashed in 5 seconds (first time ever crashing with chrome) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/889706 Title: Gnome-shell randomly crashes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/889706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
@Wei En, I had compiz installed only the first day I had Mint installed and thought maybe it was causing issues, so uninstalled it. [Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
This problem is occurring for me. I'm new to Mint 12, only installed yesterday for the first time. Since then, I've randomly crashed 6 times so far, each time I was doing something completely different with nothing similar. It is a fresh install with all latest updates applied, but not much customizations done so far. I do have gnome reflections and windowlist extensions installed and enabled. I don't know if this could be contributing or not. I've tried enabling and disabling menu and it crashes with both.
I will try disabling the reflexion extension. Is there anything else I should try doing to capture more details about the crashes? Like I said, I just did a fresh install (for first time) yesterday to Mint 12 (used to use Ubuntu 10.10, did a full replacement by reformatting and installing Mint). I did a system update to update all packages after the install. I've installed very little so far -- been experiencing the crashes early on. The first things I installed right after the install was VMware workstation 8, chrome and the gnome extensions (windowlist and reflextion, which I now have both disabled). These are the only out of box changes I've made so far. When I "crash", I have to use CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to restart the shell. I only get a screen of last thing I see before the crash and a pointer that I can move around, thats it. I'm able to toggle to command prompts (ALT+CTRL+F1 etc) just fine.
