[Bug 291408] Re: Bluetooth Mighty Mouse: hidp HID_QUIRK_INVERT_HWHEEL actually inverts wheel wrong way!

2008-12-05 Thread bitinerant
This problem has frustrated me ever since I upgraded to Intrepid. I
have the same model of Mighty Mouse; here is the applicable line from
`cat /proc/bus/input/devices`:

I: Bus=0005 Vendor=05ac Product=030c Version=0200

I don't think I'm up to compiling a new kernel. I have tried many
variations in my "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/mightymouse.fdi" file, but none
seem to change the way my mouse operates (vertical wheel scrolling is
fine; horizontal wheel scrolling is reverse).

Is there a work-around via an fdi file, or is the kernel patch the only
work-around at this time?

[Bug 289686] Re: evolution contacts are lost on upgrade to [8.10] RC

2008-11-24 Thread bitinerant
I also have missing contacts after upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10
(Evolution 2.24.1-0ubuntu2). However, for me not all of the contacts
are missing. My primary contacts folder displays 46 contacts, but
"strings ~/.evolution/addressbook/local/system/addressbook.db |grep
'^BEGIN:VCARD' |wc -l" displays 1615, which is probably the correct
number. When typing part of the name of one of the 46 contacts in a new
email, auto-completion works, but not for any of the missing contacts.

Possibly related, the number of unread emails (displayed to the right of
the folder name) for my search folders is way off.

[Bug 215074] Re: macbook battery info not readable, appears empty

2008-11-04 Thread bitinerant
Perhaps this problem has something to do with the battery calibration.

I experience this problem in Ubuntu 7.04, 7.10, and 8.04. A while back,
I read something about Apple's recommendation to occasionally allow the
MacBook battery to completely discharge and then recharge in order to
recalibrate. (I think this may help prolong the battery's life anyhow.)
On June 26, I shut down Ubuntu, booted OS X, changed the power settings
so that it would never shut off if left idol on battery power, and went
to bed. In the morning, as hoped, the battery was completely depleted
(according to the lights on the bottom of the physical battery). I
turned on the computer, booted OS X, and I let it charge to about 17%.

Then I rebooted into Ubuntu and the battery icon has worked well ever
since (over 4 months now)! I don't think I have even booted into OS X
since then. (I am currently running Ubuntu 8.04 on a MacBook2,1.)

Confirmed on Ubuntu 8.10 with updates. This is a particularly
problematic problem on CD drives without a manual eject button (e.g.

[Bug 319097] [NEW] polytopes screensaver freezes, requiring hard reset

2009-01-19 Thread bitinerant
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xscreensaver-gl

I returned to my laptop after several minutes and the Polytopes
screensaver was moving normally. I did not press shift or any other key
to clear the screensaver. Instead, I began typing my password. At
about the first letter of the password, the display froze at a Polytopes
image and the computer was completely unresponsive. Even ctrl-alt-F1
did not respond.

This happened two times. Most of the time this same procedure works
properly, even though I almost always begin with the first letter of my
password (rather than shift or ctrl). On both occasions when the screen
froze, I was lucky and the computer was networked with another computer
and I was able to ssh in to the computer with the locked screen.
Running 'top' showed that the process 'polytopes' was using 100% CPU. I
was able to recover my open documents with a simple 'killall polytopes',
but if I had not been able to ssh into the computer, a hard reset would
have been necessary.

[Bug 319097] Re: [intel] polytopes screensaver freezes, requiring hard reset

2009-02-08 Thread bitinerant
I attempted to get a backtrace, but I'm not sure it worked. After
attaching gdb to the frozen polytopes process, gdb froze (ctrl-c did not
work) until I killed the polytopes process from another terminal window.
At that point gdb gave some error messages. It did then allow me to
dump a backtrace, but I'm not sure it is a backtrace of polytopes.
There are no debug symbols, even though I installed the package
xscreensaver-gl-dbgsym=5.07-0ubuntu3. Attached is the dump of what I
went through with some added comments. I hope this helps. If there's a
better procedure to try, I will make another attempt.

[Bug 319097] Re: [intel] polytopes screensaver freezes, requiring hard reset

2009-02-09 Thread bitinerant
I tried:

  gdb /usr/lib/xscreensaver/polytopes 2>&1 | tee gdb-polytopes.txt

and typed 'run' in gdb. It successfully brought up the Polytopes
screensaver in a window. Pressing escape closed the window. However, I
repeated this process about 7000 times (via a script!) and it never
locked up. Somehow, it seems that it needs to be in full-screen mode as
a real screensaver to reproduce the problem. Unfortunately, it seems
that when run in this mode, a backtrace is not possible. Is there
another method to try?

[Bug 319097] Re: [intel] polytopes screensaver freezes, requiring hard reset

2009-02-10 Thread bitinerant
My prior backtrace attempt (2009-02-08) was over the network via ssh. I
tried it again today, but this time I attached gdb to the polytopes
process BEFORE polytopes locked up. However, the result was nearly
identical to the log I uploaded on 2009-02-08. In short, once polytopes
locked up, pressing ctrl-c in the gdb window caused gdb to silently
abort. All I got was my bash prompt. Polytopes was still frozen on the
other computer.

> Does this happen if you turn off locking (password checking) on the
screensaver?

I cannot test this until I figure out how to trigger the screensaver
without waiting for the inactivity time out or locking the screen. My
hunch is that the problem is somehow related to the signals when a key
is pressed. When polytopes is running normally but gdb is attached,
pressing a key on the polytopes computer causes gdb to print, "Program
received signal SIGSTOP, Stopped (signal)." After pressing escape at
the screensaver password prompt, gdb then prints, "Program received
signal SIGTERM, Terminated." However, the polytopes pid does not
change.

I don't know if this is related, but after I did the above testing and
had written most of these comments, I opened the screensaver preferences
dialog (which displays a small preview of polytopes) and my laptop
suddenly rebooted. It has never done this before and it seemed to
happen exactly as the screensaver preferences dialog was opening.

I am glad this has helped others, but in my case I already had the file

[Bug 438379] Re: ext4 journal error, remounted read-only after resume

2009-12-22 Thread bitinerant
Four times now I have experienced what I think is exactly the same
problem ("touch: cannot touch `testfile': Read-only file system") except
that it happened while the computer was on rather than after resume.
Three of the four times I was away from my laptop when it happened and
had to kill the screen saver via ctrl-alt-F1. I could then view
everything I had been working on on ctrl-alt-F7, but was unable to save
any documents. The next boot says, "Mount of filesystem failed." but
"fsck -y" seemed to be able to fix everything without loss of data
(other than unsaved open documents). I thought this might be a failing
hard drive but I mirrored my drive to another of the same size and the
fourth time was with the new hard drive.

One thing in common to all four occurrences is that I was synchronizing
files between my laptop and another using Unison
(http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/). However this runs as a
normal user (not root). My suspicion is that this problem occurs more
often (or only?) during periods of heavy disk usage.

I use one huge ext4 volume (mounted as /) with it and swap as LVs on LVM
on top of dm-crypt/LUKS encryption. My system is a MacBook 2,1, 160 GB
HDD (not SDD), kernel 2.6.31-16-generic with standard updates.

[Bug 414560] Re: ath9k disassociates/reassociates a lot

2009-12-23 Thread bitinerant
Thanks for the tip, but the command `iwconfig wlan1 power off` does not
help on my system.

I figured out how to visualize the network pauses by printing dots to
the terminal in a background process while connecting to a remote system
via ssh and asking it to count. See attachment for details. If you
remove blank lines and turn off word wrap, it shows a very clear pattern
of two pauses about 7 seconds part, repeating every 119.5 seconds. The
pauses vary from about 2 to15 seconds each. (The 'local' system is
using Atheros AR5418 wireless (ath9k) connected to a Linsys AP via
802.11g using WPA/WPA2. The 'remote' system and the AP are connected
via CAT5.)

[Bug 1448778] Re: Evince fails to display some fonts (some font thing failed)

2018-10-11 Thread bitinerant
I have a number of PDF files which, when opened, display some text but
not others, and show dozens of "some font thing failed" lines in the
terminal. The PDFs appear fine in Firefox. I don't know what "texlive"
is, so I'm quite sure I'm not using that, but I do have some fonts in
~/.fonts

Thanks to the above comment, I tried:

sudo apt install apparmor-utils
sudo aa-complain evince

Now Evince displays the PDFs properly and does not show the "some font
thing failed" errors.

[Bug 1448778] Re: Evince fails to display some fonts (some font thing failed)

2018-10-11 Thread bitinerant
I have additional information. Within ~/.fonts I have a subfolder
containing some Windows fonts. It seems that if those files are not
OWNED by the user running Evince (even though they are group readable),
then Evince does not display the fonts at all.

I feel this is a bug. At the very least, Evince should display a
permissions error to the user rather than a document with a lot of
missing information. Better yet, it should display the text in another
font. Better yet, apparmor should be adjusted to allow it to read these
font files.

[Bug 1448778] Re: Evince fails to display some fonts (some font thing failed)

2018-10-13 Thread bitinerant
Seth--thanks for the helpful details.

I appreciate the suggestions, but none quite fit my use case. It's
really 2 users wanting to share the fonts--one owns them and the other
has a symlink. If I put them in /usr/local/share/fonts/ then they don't
get backed up and can't be modified. I think the simplest option for me
is to use the extra 74 MB and make a copy for each user.

I understand the execution privileges issue if the font files are owned
by another user, so you've convinced me that this is a valid security
precaution.

Do you agree, however, that it would be helpful to display a message for
the user rather than empty space in their PDF?

[Bug 1774188] Re: Unlocking the screen takes 5 seconds in Xorg sessions (not so much in Wayland sessions)

2018-11-01 Thread bitinerant
I occasionally see this on two separate 18.04 installations using Xorg
sessions. The time to unlock varies from a couple of seconds to several
minutes. Everything other than unlocking the screen feels to work at a
normal speed.

I can reliably reproduce this issue (cause screen unlocking to take
several minutes) by reading files from my Android 8 phone over USB
(phone in "Use USB to transfer files" mode; Ubuntu directory
/run/user/1000/gvfs/mtp:host...). (Probably not related, but this file
transfer seems extremely slow.)

[Bug 1772201] [NEW] resizing nautilus icons in grid view also resizes desktop icons

2018-05-19 Thread bitinerant
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

  * open a Nautilus window
  * minimize other windows so you can see some desktop icons next to the
Nautilus window
  * click on the Nautilus window to give it focus
  * press ctrl-2 to switch to grid view
  * press ctrl-+ a few times to make the icons larger

Expected results: the icons in the Nautiuls window get bigger but the
desktop icons do not change

Actual results: the icons in the Nautiuls window get bigger but the
desktop icons do too, often building up in the lower-right corner of the
desktop and loosing icon positions

[Bug 1913365] [NEW] "Adjust pitch" changes adjustment between songs

2021-01-26 Thread bitinerant
Public bug reported:

Under Tools > Effects and Filters > Advances, when "Adjust pitch" is
enabled, it works properly for the duration of the current song. After
that, the audible pitch changes (though the displayed number of
semitones remains the same). For example, if set to "2.0 semitones" and
VLC is set on repeat-one, when the song restarts, the pitch will be 3.0
semitones, even though the dialog box still says "2.0 semitones". The
work-around is to adjust the slider to "0.0 semitones" and then back to
"2.0 semitones".

Would someone be so gracious as to detail the workaround for this bug
until it is fixed? I disabled secure boot and tried to build Core18
using instructions from the wireless.wiki.kernel.org page but I still
have firmware 16.242414.0 and my WiFi continues to disconnect. Here is
a summary of the steps I followed:

  cd /tmp/
  git clone
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/iwlwifi/backport-iwlwifi.git -b
release/LinuxCore18
  cd backport-iwlwifi/
  make defconfig-iwlwifi-public
  sed -i 's/CPTCFG_IWLMVM_VENDOR_CMDS=y/# CPTCFG_IWLMVM_VENDOR_CMDS is not
set/' .config # see web page subheading "About vendor commands"
  make -j4
sudo make install # displayed lots of SSL errors
  # reboot

It appears that I have the updated module but it's not getting loaded:

[Bug 782406] Re: LibreOffice Writer Document Compare (regression)

2016-04-14 Thread bitinerant
Maybe I'm missing something, but this seems like a huge deal and still
an issue in LibreOffice (4.2.8.2 on Ubuntu 14.04). I have tried
variations of this procedure many times, always with the same result.
The two texts differ in a few minor places.

To reproduce:

  * open Writer
  * copy text 1 from another application and paste into Write via Edit > Paste
Special > Unformatted Text
  * save and close
  * open a new Writer document and repeat the above with text 2
  * open document 1
  * click Edit > Compare Document and choose document 2
  * expected result: a few small insertions and deletions representing the
differences between the texts
  * result: one huge insertion and one huge deletion

Why is this marked "won't fix"?

[Bug 1573907] [NEW] missing "Close multiple terminals?" warning when current terminal is zoomed

2016-04-22 Thread bitinerant
Public bug reported:

I really appreciate the "Close multiple terminals?" alert when I
accidentally close Terminator with multiple terminals open. However,
when I need it most--when one of the terminals is zoomed (making the
others invisible)--it fails to display.

To reproduce:

  * open Terminator
  * right-click and choose Split Horizontally
  * right-click and choose Zoom terminal
  * close Terminator

Expected result: "Close multiple terminals?" warning dialog

Actual result: Terminator closes normally

Note, to see the the "Close multiple terminals?" warning, repeat the
above steps skipping the 'Zoom terminal' step. Also note, this dialog
has a "Do not show this message message next time" checkbox, which is
obviously must be unchecked for the above tests.

[Bug 1224732] Re: Custom keyboard shortcuts don't work

2015-06-08 Thread bitinerant
This problem has been bugging me for a very long time--custom and media
keyboard shortcuts occasionally not working; logging out and back in
usually fixes it. Comment #63 fixed it for me immediately (did not have
to log out). :-) To be clear, I ran CompizConfig (search for ccsm) and,
under the "General" category, unchecked the checkbox next to "Commands".
What's more, this same procedure fixed the PrintScreen button on another
computer (both Ubuntu 14.04.2). I have not tried re-enabling CCSM
Commands.

[Bug 1430757] [NEW] iptables-extensions man page misleading for --to

2015-03-11 Thread bitinerant
Public bug reported:

The man page for iptables-extensions for the "--to'' option (string
module) implies that the length of the string to match must be included
in the byte range. The example from the man page to block DNS queries
for www.netfilter.org is even more misleading because it unnecessarily
searches a 33-byte range (16+length of the string). The "--to" offset
NEED NOT include the length of the string to be matched. For example,
the following will block DNS queries for microsoft.com and
www.microsoft.com:

sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -o wlan+ -p udp --dport 53 -m string --algo
bm --from 40 --to 45 --hex-string "|09|microsoft|03|com|" -j DROP

As a consequence, iptables rules may match packets that the user does
not intend to match.

(Tested on kernel 3.13.0-46-generic.)

[Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses

2015-03-13 Thread bitinerant
Whether this is a bug or feature request, I don't know, but to be sure,
it is possible to do this with a .conf file and "sudo service openvpn
start" and not possible to do it via network-manager-openvpn (unless you
count disabling dnsmasq--I'm curious what side effects this has). As
described in the original report, I have verified that these lines in a
.conf file allow the server to configure DNS (as long as the server
pushes 3 or more DNS servers):

  script-security 2
  up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf
  down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf

but network-manager-openvpn does not support the 'up' and 'down'.

This same issue was addressed here:

[Bug 803348] Re: In Firefox, scrolling and then pressing Ctrl causes zoom

2015-03-14 Thread bitinerant
This issue is not limited to Firefox or even the control key. When
scrolling and then coasting in one application and then using alt-tab to
switch to another application, often the coasting continues.

For example, begin scrolling a long web page in Firefox and let it
coast. While it is still coasting, press alt-tab but don't release the
alt key. Every time I do this, the highlighted application in the
application switcher 'coasts' right or left (depending on whether I am
coasting up or down) and then slowly stops after a couple of seconds.

Here is another (less reproducible) example. I began scrolling and
coasting in Terminator, then pressed alt-tab to switch to Image Viewer
(eog) and the picture I had open zoomed out, which is the 'scroll down'
action in Image Viewer.

Perhaps what I am describing is a different bug, but if so, I it seems
closely connected. The way coasting is done seems fragile. It might be
that the fix is simply to stop coasting when any key is pressed, or it
might be a lot more complicated than this.

[Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses

2015-03-17 Thread bitinerant
Actually, I'd like to retract part of what I said above. Via tcpdump, I
was able to confirm that --push on the server for "dhcp-option DNS ..."
and "redirect-gateway" ARE ACTUALLY WORKING, though the changes are not
visible in /etc/resolv.conf. Rather, they are updated in dnsmasq and
resolv.conf points to dnsmasq. (I don't think the "def1" flag for
"redirect-gateway" works.)

In my view, two things are needed: (1) a documented way to view the
list of DNS servers within Network Manager's dnsmasq so folks here can
watch what is happening without tcpdump, and (2) support for "dhcp-
option DNS ..." and "redirect-gateway" on the client (not just options
pushed from the server). The first item seems more important and should
be much easier.

[Bug 803348] Re: In Firefox, scrolling and then pressing Ctrl causes zoom

2014-04-16 Thread bitinerant
As dimovnike wrote, this happens on simple pages too--as long as they
are at least several screens long. Two-finger scrolling has momentum,
or "coasts" a while after removing your fingers from the touchpad if
they are in motion. I love this feature and think it works well. The
problem is that the Ctrl key should not zoom the document while Firefox
is coasting! This bug can unintentionally zoom in or out, depending on
the scroll direction. I suspect most people who face this problem never
realize why the document zoomed in or out.

[Bug 1109890] Re: Unicode 25D2 "Circle With Lower Half Black" and 25D3 swapped in most fonts

2013-01-29 Thread bitinerant
Font substitution obviously plays a big role here, and different
applications have different rules for this. For example, OpenSymbol and
Courier New both display incorrectly in Firefox but correctly in
LibreOffice.

I can post a screenshot but I think it would be much more useful if it
did not include the fonts which do not define U+25D2. Is there a way to
search all fonts to see which ones define that character?

[Bug 1109890] Re: Unicode 25D2 "Circle With Lower Half Black" and 25D3 swapped in most fonts

2013-02-05 Thread bitinerant
Thanks for the instructions. In the Ubuntu font, U+25D3 maps from
DejaVu Sans. Same for Arial, Garamond, Lucida Sans, Microsoft Sans
Serif, Ubuntu Mono, Ubuntu Condensed, and dozens of others I tested.
Serif and Times New Roman map U+25D3 from DejaVu Serif. Most monospace
fonts map from DejaVu Mono and are fine.

So it seems that the problem is with these two fonts:
  * DejaVu Sans
  * DejaVu Serif

[Bug 1036029] Re: All menus are empty when using Unity Global Menus

2013-02-08 Thread bitinerant
Hackel, does the attached screen shot show the issue are describing?
Only a small gray box drops down where the menu should be. Tapping alt
and typing does not work properly either, so all menu commands are
inaccessible. I've seen this in Firefox and Nautilus on two different
12.04 installs. The only way I know to clear the problem is to close
all instances of the application and restart it. I don't yet know how
to reproduce this issue--perhaps it only occurs after a Compiz crash.

[Bug 994309] Re: wine is uninstallable

2012-09-04 Thread bitinerant
Just for the record, a while back I did:

sudo aptitude install wine --without-recommends

It installed fine and has been working ever since. I don't remember if
Mono was installed at the time, but there may be an unintended
interaction between Wine and Mono. Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit.

[Bug 970402] Re: kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-3.2.0/fs/btrfs/extent-tree.c:2287!

2012-08-07 Thread bitinerant
In case it still matters to someone, I got this same error on an
external USB 2 GB drive with the stock 12.04 kernel (3.2.0-27):

  kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-3.2.0/fs/btrfs/extent-tree.c:2287!

I installed kernel 3.4.7 as suggested above and it did, indeed, fix the
issue. The drive mounted read-only until I ran "btrfsck --repair" (from
btrfs-tools_0.19+20120328-7_amd64.deb), but after that it seemed ok, and
I never got the 'kernel BUG' screen.

[Bug 794142] Re: Printing PDFs with some greyscale images results in the images appearing as negatives

2012-08-15 Thread bitinerant
Thank you, Kuroshima, for reporting this. I have struggled with this
bug on Ubuntu 10.10 and 12.04. I didn't report it myself because my
problematic PDFs are copyrighted. However, I am attaching a screenshot
of Evince's screen display (left) and Evince's print preview (right).

This sounds like a very old Ghostscript bug
(http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691760) but I ran the test
documented there and it worked fine, so I think it's unrelated.

My work-around was to print via Xpdf, which was awkward but worked.
However, now Xpdf is completely broken (bug #943195) and I am without a
way to print my maps at all.

[Bug 887836] Re: update-grub does not create btrfs menuentry in grub.cfg

2012-08-15 Thread bitinerant
I believe this bug explains why I can't boot from sda1. I installed a
'normal' Ubuntu 12.04 with Btrfs on sda1 and it worked fine. I let the
installer create the partition table; GParted says it is 'msdos'. I
then installed a crypt-luks Ubuntu 12.04 with /boot on sda2 (Ext2),
encrypted swap on sda3, and root on sda4 (Btrfs). The 'update-grub'
command finds my encrypted installation and it works fine, but it never
finds the original sda1 Btrfs partition and I haven't been able to boot
from it since I installed the second Ubuntu.

Output of 'fdisk -l' and 'update-grub' is attached. Martin, is there
anything else you'd like to know about an effected system? Is there a
work-around?

[Bug 978604] Re: Banshee/Rhythmbox regularly stop playing audio when left on in the background

2012-08-22 Thread bitinerant
This seems to be fixed in Rhythmbox too. I had enabled crossfade as a
work-around, but just now I disabled crossfade, closed, re-opened
Rhythmbox, and tested. The formerly-broken MP3-to-OGG transition works
well, as well as all the other combinations of OGG, MP3, and WMA tried.

[Bug 978604] Re: Banshee/Rhythmbox regularly stop playing audio when left on in the background

2012-08-23 Thread bitinerant
Alistair, perhaps you are experiencing a different bug or perhaps you
have a different version of Rhythmbox or a library. I don't have any
FLAC files to test. My experience with this bug in the past is that it
froze/paused on transitions _from_ MP3 and _not_to_ MP3.

I'm running Rhythmbox version 2.96-0ubuntu4.1, libgstreamer0.10-0
version 0.10.36-1ubuntu1, and libtotem-plparser17 version 3.4.1-1.

[Bug 1007352] Re: "toggle fullscreen mode" keyboard shortcut not honoured

2012-08-27 Thread bitinerant
I don't know how they got in the state, but two applications
(Thunderbird and TortoiseHG) got very stuck in fullscreen mode (not just
maximized, but 100% of my LCD). No amount of F11, maximize, moving,
rebooting, etc. would unstick them. I worked around it by editing
config files (.thunderbird//localstore.rdf and
.config/TortoiseHg/TortoiseHgQt.ini), but it was a pain and a simple
alt-F11 configured in System Settings would have REALLY nice, especially
if it happens again.

[Bug 956071] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty()

2012-08-29 Thread bitinerant
The "except for scrolling" phrase from ThomasNovin really caught my
attention because, on two laptops using xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
1.5.99.902, I have seen the touchpad become inoperable except for
scrolling. I have both configured for two-finger scrolling, and when
this happens, it switches to 'one-finger scrolling' with no way to move
the pointer position. Sometimes it is fixed with "sudo modprobe -r
psmouse; sleep 2; sudo modprobe psmouse" but sometimes this crashes Xorg
(back to login screen). What is different, however, is that rather than
happening at resume, it happens randomly, perhaps more during high CPU
usage.

It seems to me that the 'one-finger scrolling' is a different bug.
