[Bug 291408] Re: Bluetooth Mighty Mouse: hidp HID_QUIRK_INVERT_HWHEEL actually inverts wheel wrong way!
This problem has frustrated me ever since I upgraded to Intrepid. I have the same model of Mighty Mouse; here is the applicable line from `cat /proc/bus/input/devices`: I: Bus=0005 Vendor=05ac Product=030c Version=0200 I don't think I'm up to compiling a new kernel. I have tried many variations in my "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/mightymouse.fdi" file, but none seem to change the way my mouse operates (vertical wheel scrolling is fine; horizontal wheel scrolling is reverse). [Bug 215074] Re: macbook battery info not readable, appears empty
Perhaps this problem has something to do with the battery calibration. I experience this problem in Ubuntu 7.04, 7.10, and 8.04. A while back, I read something about Apple's recommendation to occasionally allow the MacBook battery to completely discharge and then recharge in order to recalibrate. (I think this may help prolong the battery's life anyhow.) On June 26, I shut down Ubuntu, booted OS X, changed the power settings so that it would never shut off if left idol on battery power, and went to bed. In the morning, as hoped, the battery was completely depleted (according to the lights on the bottom of the physical battery). I turned on the computer, booted OS X, and I let it charge to about 17%. Then I rebooted into Ubuntu and the battery icon has worked well ever since (over 4 months now)! I don't think I have even booted into OS X since then. [Bug 319097] [NEW] polytopes screensaver freezes, requiring hard reset
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xscreensaver-gl I returned to my laptop after several minutes and the Polytopes screensaver was moving normally. I did not press shift or any other key to clear the screensaver. Instead, I began typing my password. At about the first letter of the password, the display froze at a Polytopes image and the computer was completely unresponsive. Even ctrl-alt-F1 did not respond. This happened two times. Most of the time this same procedure works properly, even though I almost always begin with the first letter of my password (rather than shift or ctrl). On both occasions when the screen froze, I was lucky and the computer was networked with another computer and I was able to ssh in to the computer with the locked screen. Running 'top' showed that the process 'polytopes' was using 100% CPU. I was able to recover my open documents with a simple 'killall polytopes', but if I had not been able to ssh into the computer, a hard reset would have been necessary. [Bug 319097] Re: [intel] polytopes screensaver freezes, requiring hard reset
I attempted to get a backtrace, but I'm not sure it worked. After attaching gdb to the frozen polytopes process, gdb froze (ctrl-c did not work) until I killed the polytopes process from another terminal window. At that point gdb gave some error messages. It did then allow me to dump a backtrace, but I'm not sure it is a backtrace of polytopes. There are no debug symbols, even though I installed the package xscreensaver-gl-dbgsym=5.07-0ubuntu3. Attached is the dump of what I went through with some added comments. I hope this helps. I tried: gdb /usr/lib/xscreensaver/polytopes 2>&1 | tee gdb-polytopes.txt and typed 'run' in gdb. It successfully brought up the Polytopes screensaver in a window. Pressing escape closed the window. However, I repeated this process about 7000 times (via a script!) and it never locked up. Somehow, it seems that it needs to be in full-screen mode as a real screensaver to reproduce the problem. Unfortunately, it seems that when run in this mode, a backtrace is not possible. [Bug 319097] Re: [intel] polytopes screensaver freezes, requiring hard reset
My prior backtrace attempt (2009-02-08) was over the network via ssh. I tried it again today, but this time I attached gdb to the polytopes process BEFORE polytopes locked up. However, the result was nearly identical to the log I uploaded on 2009-02-08. In short, once polytopes locked up, pressing ctrl-c in the gdb window caused gdb to silently abort. All I got was my bash prompt. Polytopes was still frozen on the other computer. > Does this happen if you turn off locking (password checking) on the screensaver? I cannot test this until I figure out how to trigger the screensaver without waiting for the inactivity time out or locking the screen. My hunch is that the problem is somehow related to the signals when a key is pressed. When polytopes is running normally but gdb is attached, pressing a key on the polytopes computer causes gdb to print, "Program received signal SIGSTOP, Stopped (signal)." After pressing escape at the screensaver password prompt, gdb then prints, "Program received signal SIGTERM, Terminated." However, the polytopes pid does not change. I don't know if this is related, but after I did the above testing and had written most of these comments, I opened the screensaver preferences dialog (which displays a small preview of polytopes) and my laptop suddenly rebooted. It has never done this before and it seemed to happen exactly as the screensaver preferences dialog was opening. -- [intel] polytopes screensaver freezes, requiring hard reset https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/319097 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Four times now I have experienced what I think is exactly the same problem ("touch: cannot touch `testfile': Read-only file system") except that it happened while the computer was on rather than after resume. Three of the four times I was away from my laptop when it happened and had to kill the screen saver via ctrl-alt-F1. I could then view everything I had been working on on ctrl-alt-F7, but was unable to save any documents. The next boot says, "Mount of filesystem failed." but "fsck -y" seemed to be able to fix everything without loss of data (other than unsaved open documents). I thought this might be a failing hard drive but I mirrored my drive to another of the same size and the fourth time was with the new hard drive. One thing in common to all four occurrences is that I was synchronizing files between my laptop and another using Unison (http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/). Better yet, apparmor should be adjusted to allow it to read these font files. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1448778 Title: Evince fails to display some fonts (some font thing failed) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/1448778/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1448778] Re: Evince fails to display some fonts (some font thing failed)
Seth--thanks for the helpful details. I appreciate the suggestions, but none quite fit my use case. It's really 2 users wanting to share the fonts--one owns them and the other has a symlink. If I put them in /usr/local/share/fonts/ then they don't get backed up and can't be modified. I think the simplest option for me is to use the extra 74 MB and make a copy for each user. I understand the execution privileges issue if the font files are owned by another user, so you've convinced me that this is a valid security precaution. Do you agree, however, that it would be helpful to display a message for the user rather than empty space in their PDF?
[Bug 1774188] Re: Unlocking the screen takes 5 seconds in Xorg sessions (not so much in Wayland sessions)
I occasionally see this on two separate 18.04 installations using Xorg sessions. The time to unlock varies from a couple of seconds to several minutes. [Bug 1430757] [NEW] iptables-extensions man page misleading for --to
Public bug reported: The man page for iptables-extensions for the "--to'' option (string module) implies that the length of the string to match must be included in the byte range. The example from the man page to block DNS queries for www.netfilter.org is even more misleading because it unnecessarily searches a 33-byte range (16+length of the string). The "--to" offset NEED NOT include the length of the string to be matched. For example, the following will block DNS queries for microsoft.com and www.microsoft.com: sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -o wlan+ -p udp --dport 53 -m string --algo bm --from 40 --to 45 --hex-string "|09|microsoft|03|com|" -j DROP As a consequence, iptables rules may match packets that the user does not intend to match. [Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses
Whether this is a bug or feature request, I don't know, but to be sure, it is possible to do this with a .conf file and "sudo service openvpn start" and not possible to do it via network-manager-openvpn (unless you count disabling dnsmasq--I'm curious what side effects this has). As described in the original report, I have verified that these lines in a .conf file allow the server to configure DNS (as long as the server pushes 3 or more DNS servers): script-security 2 up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf but network-manager-openvpn does not support the 'up' and 'down'. [Bug 803348] Re: In Firefox, scrolling and then pressing Ctrl causes zoom
This issue is not limited to Firefox or even the control key. When scrolling and then coasting in one application and then using alt-tab to switch to another application, often the coasting continues. For example, begin scrolling a long web page in Firefox and let it coast. While it is still coasting, press alt-tab but don't release the alt key. Every time I do this, the highlighted application in the application switcher 'coasts' right or left (depending on whether I am coasting up or down) and then slowly stops after a couple of seconds. Here is another (less reproducible) example. I began scrolling and coasting in Terminator, then pressed alt-tab to switch to Image Viewer (eog) and the picture I had open zoomed out, which is the 'scroll down' action in Image Viewer. Perhaps what I am describing is a different bug, but if so, I it seems closely connected. The way coasting is done seems fragile. It might be that the fix is simply to stop coasting when any key is pressed, or it might be a lot more complicated than this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/803348 Title: In Firefox, scrolling and then pressing Ctrl causes zoom To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/803348/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses
Actually, I'd like to retract part of what I said above. Via tcpdump, I was able to confirm that --push on the server for "dhcp-option DNS ..." and "redirect-gateway" ARE ACTUALLY WORKING, though the changes are not visible in /etc/resolv.conf. Rather, they are updated in dnsmasq and resolv.conf points to dnsmasq. (I don't think the "def1" flag for "redirect-gateway" works.) In my view, two things are needed: (1) a documented way to view the list of DNS servers within Network Manager's dnsmasq so folks here can watch what is happening without tcpdump, and (2) support for "dhcp- option DNS ..." and "redirect-gateway" on the client (not just options pushed from the server). I worked around it by editing config files (.thunderbird//localstore.rdf and .config/TortoiseHg/TortoiseHgQt.ini), but it was a pain and a simple alt-F11 configured in System Settings would have REALLY nice, especially if it happens again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007352 Title: "toggle fullscreen mode" keyboard shortcut not honoured To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1007352/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 956071] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty()
The "except for scrolling" phrase from ThomasNovin really caught my attention because, on two laptops using xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.5.99.902, I have seen the touchpad become inoperable except for scrolling. I have both configured for two-finger scrolling, and when this happens, it switches to 'one-finger scrolling' with no way to move the pointer position. Sometimes it is fixed with "sudo modprobe -r psmouse; sleep 2; sudo modprobe psmouse" but sometimes this crashes Xorg (back to login screen). What is different, however, is that rather than happening at resume, it happens randomly, perhaps more during high CPU usage. It seems to me that the 'one-finger scrolling' is a different bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/956071 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/956071/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 804109] Re: can't enable touchpad in Ubuntu 11.10 (thinkpads)
Tested today--yes, it is still a problem on Precise (Unity session, ThinkPad T420s). Fix in comment #46 works until reboot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/804109 Title: can't enable touchpad in Ubuntu 11.10 (thinkpads) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/804109/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
