In case it still matters to someone, I got this same error on an external USB 2 GB drive with the stock 12.04 kernel (3.2.0-27):
kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-3.2.0/fs/btrfs/extent-tree.c:2287! I installed kernel 3.4.7 as suggested above and it did, indeed, fix the issue.
