[Bug 122110] Re: firefox 1.5.0.12 misparses listings from microsoft ftp service

2009-05-08 Thread Richard Griswold
I've run into this problem on the Microsoft FTP site. For example, when
I view ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Products/mspress/samples using Firefox
under Linux, some of the dates show up as 02/08/107, but when I view the
same URL using Firefox under Windows, the dates don't show up at all.

I've attached screen shots from Firefox 3.0.10 under Linux (Ubuntu 8.10)
and Firefox 3.0.8 under Windows (Server 2003), as well as IE 7.0.5730.13
under Windows for comparison.

[Bug 485155] [NEW] No progress bar with default Xubuntu usplash theme

2009-11-18 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xubuntu-artwork

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu.

"lsb_release -rd" output:

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

"apt-cache policy" output:

  Candidate: 0.38
  Version table:

3) What you expected to happen

1. Boot computer
2. Splash screen appears with progress bar that shows how far along the boot
process is.

4) What happened instead

1. Boot computer
2. Splash screen appears with glowing Xfce mouse mascot, but no progress bar.
Nothing happens for several seconds, making it appear like the system is hung.
After an indefinite amount of time, the login screen appears.

I tried installing a couple of other usplash themes (usplash-theme-
sabily and usplash-theme-taibah), and they have a progress bar. The
default splash screen for Xubuntu 9.04 also had a progress bar, but that
disappeared when I upgraded to 9.10. If there was a design decision to
remove the progress bar, please consider adding it back, because it
really does seem like the system is hung when there is nothing happening
during the boot progress.

[Bug 517148] [NEW] Font selection drop-down usability suffers when hundreds or thousands of fonts are installed

2010-02-04 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gucharmap

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu.

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

(This is Xubuntu)

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy

  Version table:
 *** 1:2.28.0-0ubuntu1 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What you expected to happen

a) Click on the font drop-down
b) A list of fonts appears
c) Using the mouse or keyboard shortcuts, quickly select an arbitrary font from
the list of over 1900 installed fonts

4) What happened instead

a) Click on the font drop-down
b) A list of fonts appears
c) I can use the "Home" key to go to the beginning or the "End" key to go to
the end, but other than that I'm limited to slowly scrolling through the list
using the up and down buttons or the "Up", "Down", "Page-up", and "Page-down"
buttons.

According to `fc-list | wc`, my system has 1928 fonts installed. With
this many fonts, gucharmap's font selection drop-down becomes difficult
to use, since there is no way to jump to fonts that start with a
specific letter or to scroll to an arbitrary location in the list. The
usability could be improved by adding a scrollbar to the drop down and
by allowing users to jump to a font by typing in the name. For example,
"f" would jump to the first font that starts with "f", "r" to the first
font that starts with "fr", "e" to the first font that starts with
"fre", and so on.

[Bug 454337] [NEW] Some keyboard shortcut combinations do not work

2009-10-17 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

3) What you expected to happen

1. Open keyboard configuration (Applications→Settings→Keyboard or
"xfce4-keyboard-settings" from terminal).
2. Switch to "Application Shortcuts" tab
3. Click "Add" button
4. Enter command in "Shortcut Command" dialog and click "OK" button
5. Press Super_L (left "Windows" key) and Space (or Super_L and Esc) in
"Command Shortcut" dialog
6. Command shortcut dialog closes
7. New command shows up in shortcut list with shortcut set to "Space" or
"Esc"

4) What happened instead

After command shortcut dialog closes, the new command does not show up
in the shortcut list. If the shortcut already exists and I try changing
the shortcut to Space or Esc, the shortcut key combo does
not change. I can use Super with all other keys I've tested, such as
letters, numbers, arrows, symbols, modifiers (shift, control, alt,
etc.), print screen, pause, etc. If these two key combinations cannot
be used for some reason, the application should display a notice when I
try using them instead of silently failing.

[Bug 1578743] Re: source-highlight hangs when using zsh.lang languge definition

2017-08-22 Thread Richard Griswold
The problem is in /usr/share/source-highlight/zsh.lang. The keyword
clause ends with a trailing vertical bar. If you remove that, zsh
source highlighting will work. This bug is still in the latest version
in the git repo (https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/src-
highlite.git/tree/src/zsh.lang).

There is some more information in the GNU bug report

[Bug 1578743] [NEW] source-highlight hangs when using zsh.lang languge definition

2016-05-05 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

When the source-highlight language definition is set to zsh.lang, the
program hangs. It doesn't hang when set to other language definitions.

To reproduce:

source-highlight --failsafe -f esc --lang-def=zsh.lang --style-
file=esc.style -i /path/to/zsh/script

What happens:

Nothing. I have to use CTRL-C to quit.

What I expected:

Syntax highlighted output

Other information:

If I use a different language definition, I get the highlighted output
almost immediately. For example, the following command works without a
problem:

source-highlight --failsafe -f esc --lang-def=sh.lang --style-
file=esc.style -i /path/to/zsh/script

[Bug 1099640] Re: Renesas Technology USB 3.0 controller does not work in Kernel 3.5.0-19 and 3.5.0-21

2013-01-20 Thread Richard Griswold
After I filed this bug report, I got some indications that the
motherboard was failing on the computer. I swapped out the old
motherboard (MSI N1996) for a new one (ASRock 970 Extreme3) and tested
the device again. It is working fine with the the 3.5.0-22 kernel. It
looks like the problem was caused by a failing motherboard.

[Bug 891839] [NEW] xscreensaver will not unlock when using Kerberos authentication

2011-11-17 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10, xscreensaver will not unlock
my screen if I am using Kerberos authentication. It worked fine before
the upgrade, and it still works if I am not using Kerberos
authentication. If I am using Kerberos authentication, however, it will
not accept my password, so I have to log in to a console and kill
xscreensaver.

I enabled verbose output for xscreensaver, and I saw an authentication
failure message from PAM in the output. I've tried rebooting and I've
tried reinstalling xscreensaver, but this problem still persists. I can
log in (console, ssh, and graphically [SLiM]), run su, and do everything
else with no authentication problems. It only seems to affect
xscreensaver. I have not modified the xscreensaver PAM configuration.

[Bug 891839] Re: xscreensaver will not unlock when using Kerberos authentication

2011-11-22 Thread Richard Griswold
I checked /var/log/auth.log, and found the following:

Nov 22 07:19:13 hostname xscreensaver: pam_krb5(xscreensaver:auth): (user
username) krb5_init_context failed: Permission denied

Nov 22 07:19:18 hostname xscreensaver[23792]: pam_krb5(xscreensaver:auth):

I'm not sure why I'm getting the error from krb5_init_context, since my
Kerberos configuration didn't change between 11.04 and 11.10. I tried
gnome-screensaver again, and I'm getting the same errors from it as
well:

[Bug 891839] Re: xscreensaver will not unlock when using Kerberos authentication

2012-02-20 Thread Richard Griswold
That was the problem. The permissions for /etc/krb5.conf were set to
0600. After setting them to 0644 everything works correctly.

Everything was working fine before the upgrade, and I didn't change the
permissions on the file manually, so I'm not sure how they got set to
0600.

[Bug 1166654] Re: Calculator does not convert between binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal in Raring 13.04

2013-06-03 Thread Richard Griswold
This really threw me off at first as well, but I found out how to make
it work. To convert between bases, you now have to add one of the
following after the value:

 * Binary: " in bin"
 * Octal: " in oct"
 * Decimal: " in dec"
 * Hex: " in hex"

For example, to convert 80 from hexadecimal to binary:

1. Open calculator
2. Switch to programming mode from the Application menu
3. Switch to Hexadecimal input
4. Enter 80 and press return (the number should become bold)
5. Enter " in bin" (without the quotes) after the number and press enter
6. The display should show 1000₂

I preferred the way it used to work, since it is now much slower and
less intuitive. With the older version, I could enter the number I
wanted to convert, press enter, and use CTRL-[BDOH] to show it in the
new base.

[Bug 708406] [NEW] vorbiscomment does not honor read-only file permission

2011-01-26 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vorbis-tools

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu

Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy

  Version table:
 *** 1.4.0-1ubuntu1 0

3) What you expected to happen

If I run vorbiscomment with the write (-w) or append (-a) flags on a
read-only file, I expect to get an error message. After all, the point
of making a file read-only is to prevent processes from writing to it.

4) What happened instead

If I run vorbiscomment with the write (-w) or append (-a) flags on a
read-only file, the command writes the new comments to the file. This
can be seen by running vorbiscomment again to show the new comments and
by checking the old and new file sizes. For example:

$ dd if=/dev/zero bs=32 count=10 2> /dev/null | oggenc -Q -r -o test.ogg -
$ chmod 400 test.ogg
$ ls -l test.ogg
-r 1 richard richard 5666 2011-01-26 16:51 test.ogg

[Bug 705230] [NEW] lxsession core dumps if it is already running

2011-01-19 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lxsession

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System

Description:Ubuntu 10.10

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy

3) What you expected to happen

If lxsession is already running, and I run it as second time (perhaps by
accident when I was intending to run lxsession-logout), I expect it to
give me a warning and exit, perhaps with a non-zero return code.

4) What happened instead

lxsession does give a warning, but then dumps core, which is unexpected
in this situation. For example:

am running on an Intel i915 (8086:2A42). I also added "i915.modeset=1"
to my boot options due to bug #566379. Comment 32 for that bug mentions
adding "nomodeset" to boot options so X would work with ATI and Radeon.

[Bug 590140] Re: QtMultimedia module missing from python-qt4

2010-10-29 Thread Richard Griswold
I checked https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-qt4 to see if
QtMultimedia was in the Maverick and Natty packages, but it is missing
from them as well, and the Natty package was uploaded only a week ago.
Since I use QtMultimedia in a python app I'm writing, I had to build
PyQt from scratch to get this module, which caused problems when I tried
to upgrade from Lucid to Maverick. That's straightened out now, so the
upgrade is proceeding, but now I'll have to rebuild PyQt again. Is
there any hope of getting QtMultimedia in the mainstream package?

[Bug 669741] [NEW] gthumb opens additional window for every file on the command line that doesn't exist

2010-11-01 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu.

Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

Packages

3) What you expected to happen

a) Run gthumb from the command line with a list of files
b) If any file in the list doesn't exist, gthumb either ignores it or indicates
that the file doesn't exist, perhaps by showing a "broken file" icon or through
a message in the status bar

4) What happened instead

a) Run gthumb from the command line with a list of files
b) gthumb shows one window will all of the files that exist and opens an empty
window for each file that doesn't exist. For example, if there are 10 files in
the list and 5 don't exist, gthumb opens six windows.

I ran into this problem with xdm and xinit, so I tried switching to SLiM

same problem. It works great, if I've run GDM first, but it fails
otherwise. I would like to use something other than GDM.

[Bug 605403] [NEW] No fsck progress when splash is disabled

2010-07-14 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

3) What you expected to happen

When splash is disabled and a filesystem check is forced, fsck reports
the progress of the check.

4) What happened instead

When splash is disabled and a filesystem check is forced, fsck does not
report the progress of the check, giving the appearance that the system
is hung or in a tight loop (since the hard drive activity light is on).
The system prints the following messages to the console, but nothing
more until the check finished:

fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
root has been mounted 40 times without being checked, check forced.

This problem was mentioned in comment 12 of bug #571707
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mountall/+bug/571707/comments/12),
but that bug was for a problem with plymouth, and in reading through the
rest of the comments it does not appear that the fix for plymouth
addressed this specific problem. This is also similar to bug #446596
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mountall/+bug/446596), but
that bug was for Karmic, and not Lucid, and was already fixed.

I've attached the boot.log for the system. In addition to the two
messages above, the file also contains the final output of fsck. This
also showed up on the console after fsck had finished it's checks.

get any errors on the console and Firefox completely locks up.

[Bug 622515] [NEW] os.execute() commands in rc.lua fail if shell envvar is incorrect

2010-08-22 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: awesome

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System

Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy

b) Restart Awesome

4) What happened instead

If the $SHELL envvar is incorrect (for example, it is not the absolute
path to the shell or the file it references does not exist), any
os.execute() statements in the rc.lua file fail. This does not happen
when running Lua interactively. For example, suppose the $SHELL is set
to "zsh" rather than "/usr/bin/zsh". Any os.execute() statements in the
rc.lua file produce and error similar to this:

(process:29762): GLib-WARNING **: GError set over the top of a previous GError
or uninitialized memory.
This indicates a bug in someone's code. You must ensure an error is NULL before
it's set.

However, I can start Lua interactively and the os.execute() statements
will succeed:

[Bug 629930] Re: Fails to create video when image format is 4:3 and video format is HD 720 or 1080

[Bug 631113] [NEW] Videoporama 0.8.0 will not open or save project files with non-ASCII characters in the path

2010-09-05 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: videoporama

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu.

~> lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:10.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

~> apt-cache policy videoporama
videoporama:
  Installed: 0.8.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.8.0-0ubuntu1

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 0.7.6-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/universe Packages

3) What you expected to happen

Videoporama successfully opens and saves project files that contain non-
ASCII characters such as á, ¡, and ñ as part of the file name or
directory path.

4) What happened instead

Videoporama silently fails to open or save the file if the file name or
directory path contains non-ASCII characters. Here are some examples of
failing file names and directory paths:

/home/user/dir_a/file_á.idv
/home/user/dir_á/file_a.idv
/home/user/dir_á/file_á.idv

There is an exception: Videoporama will save a project file that
contains non-ASCII characters if the ".idv" extension is left off the
file name. Videoporama automatically adds the .idv extension when it
saves the file. However, it will not reopen the file unless the file is
renamed to remove all non-ASCII characters.

Note: I installed the Videoporama 0.8.0 package from Ubuntu Maverick
while debugging the problem described in bug #629930. I also tried
installing the latest version directly from the Videoporama web site,
http://download.tuxfamily.org/videoporama/deb_pkg/videoporama_0.8.0_all.deb,
and it has the same problem described in this bug report. Apparently
since I installed a Maverick package on Lucid, apport-cli and ubuntu-bug
refused to file a bug for this package.

3) What you expected to happen

After system starts, I expect to have the following consoles available:

CTRL-ALT-F1: tty1 text login prompt
CTRL-ALT-F2: tty2 text login prompt
CTRL-ALT-F3: tty3 text login prompt
CTRL-ALT-F4: tty4 text login prompt
CTRL-ALT-F5: tty5 text login prompt
CTRL-ALT-F6: tty6 text login prompt
CTRL-ALT-F7: boot messages
CTRL-ALT-F8: graphical login manager

4) What happened instead

Consoles 2 through 8 work correctly, but instead of getting a log on
prompt for tty1, I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor about
halfway down on the left side. The ps command does not show any getty
process for tty1:

~> ps -ef | grep tty
root 850 1 0 14:09 tty4 00:00:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty4
root 855 1 0 14:09 tty5 00:00:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty5
root 861 1 0 14:09 tty2 00:00:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty2
root 862 1 0 14:09 tty3 00:00:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty3
root 864 1 0 14:09 tty6 00:00:00 /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty6
root 1614 1599 2 14:10 tty8 00:01:34 /usr/bin/X11/X -nolisten tcp
-auth /var/run/slim.auth

If I run "sudo start tty1", I get "tty1 start/running, process " and
the ps command shows a getty process for tty1. When I switch to the
console, I get a login prompt, but it does not behave property. I
sometimes have to press a key twice before the character appears, and I
cannot log in successfully. The other consoles work correctly.

5) Other notes

I'm using SLiM for my login manager, and I've disabled the graphic
splash screen by setting the GRUB command line in /etc/default/grub as
follows:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.modeset=1"

"i915.modeset=1" is there as a workaround for bug #566379.

[Bug 629930] [NEW] Fails to create video when image format is 4:3 and video format is HD 720 or 1080

2010-09-03 Thread Richard Griswold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: videoporama

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu.

~ > lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:10.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

~ > apt-cache policy videoporama
videoporama:
  Installed: 0.7.6-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.7.6-0ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 0.7.6-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/universe Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What you expected to happen

a) Select pictures for the video
b) Set the image format to "Normal - 4:3"
c) Set the video format to "HD 720" or "HD 1080"
d) Set the remaining parameters (output file format, sound file, and output
file)
e) Click "Preview montage" and check the preview
f) Click "Start processing" and watch the progress bar in the dialog as the
video file is created
g) Play the video file

4) What happened instead

When I click "Start processing", the processing dialog comes up, but
nothing happens. The console has the following error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/videoporama/process.py", line 617, in run
famg=self.choiceTransition(transitype,im1,im2,dissolve,optTr)
File "/usr/share/videoporama/process.py", line 444, in choiceTransition
resu=self.fadepil(previous,image,dissolve)
File "/usr/share/videoporama/process.py", line 302, in fadepil
imf=Image.blend(previouspil,impil,percent)
File "/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/PIL/Image.py", line 2008, in blend
return im1._new(core.blend(im1.im, im2.im, alpha))
ValueError: images do not match

I traced this down to a mismatch in size between the background image
and the first image. Videoporama creates a background image
("black.ppm" in the temp directory) that is 1920x1080, but when it
processes the rest of the images, it sets the size to 1440x1080. The
original images were all 4000x3000.
