[Bug 334887] [NEW] 4:4.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 update breaks HTTP/SSL

2009-02-26 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
Public bug reported:

Upgraded to KDE 4.2.0 from Intrepid updates this morning. Konqueror is
now unable to connect to with SSL anymore.

Every time, the server sends a TLS encrypted alert after exchanging a
few data packets, and then konqueror reports a connection failure. This
works fine with Firefox, and Konqueror 3.5.x. It somewhat worked with
4.1.x

Public bug reported:

Starting with kmail 4.2, emails from a folder are grouped by

[Bug 331671] Re: Click on akregator tray icon doesn't open akregator when it's open under Kontact

2009-02-26 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
I am getting this too since updating to 4.2.0. Looking at the screen
carefully, Akregator seems to open and then immediatley close, causing a
distinct flash of the screen.

Conversely, if akregator is visible, cliking the tray icon makes
akregator vanish for a few instants, and come back immediately.

As a work-around, I end up using right click / Restore which does work
properly.

[Bug 335325] [NEW] With KDE 4.2, HTTP authentication dialog username cannot be changed

2009-02-27 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
Public bug reported:

Since I updated to KDE 4.2 (from 4.1) through intrepid-updates, the HTTP
authentication dialog in Konqueror won't let me select the username
field. As a consequence it is impossible to authenticate any website
using plain HTTP authentication (although it still works for FORM-based
authentication).

It seems the username field is not selectable. When I click on it or use
Tab, the cursor does not show up. Typing on the keyboard has no effect.
The only work around I found is to add the username in the URL
(http://usern...@host/...) manually.

2008-10-18 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
With the "upstream" hat on, I daresay that the VLC/PA output is the work
of Ubuntu folks anyway. Forwarding it to us will not help unless you
have an actual.

As regards RTP output, you should really do it directly from VLC (--sout
'#transcode{acodec=s16b}:rtp{dst=,port-audio=}') rather than
go through PA - unless you want software mixing.

cat | vlc -I rc --rc-fake-tty

[Bug 278586] Re: VLC0.9.3.Grischenko cant play IPTV/T-Home

2008-10-05 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
This could be a wrong input format (try rtp://@ instead of udp://@). But
it sounds like packet loss, i.e. overflowing socket receive buffers. You
can check with netstat.

Unfortunately, this would be a performance issue. Without access to the
stream, it's virtually impossible to track down and fix.

[Bug 284908] Re: VLC 0.9.4 has lots of bugs. Can we use 0.9.2 instead?

2009-01-05 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
Using 0.9.2 to "restore" the integrated video output would simpliy be
PLAIN STUPID. It was disabled in 0.9.4 onward as the code involves
crash-prone race conditions. If you want the integrated video, keep the
latest VLC version and patch it.

By all means, 0.9.2 is buggier than 0.9.4 which is buggier than 0.9.8a.

[Bug 78725] Re: MASTER firefox crashed [...@vfprintf] ... -- libvlc.so.0

2009-03-08 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
This is all because of races in older versions of glibc. Namely those two (now
fixed) bugs are at fault:
http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5058 (a.k.a.
http://bugs.debian.org/443660)
http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5443 (a.k.a.
http://bugs.debian.org/456531)

In upstream glibc, those bugs are fixed with version 2.8. In Debian,
2.7-11 has the backported fixes. I have not been able to test on Ubuntu
yet, but I assume this means the bug is in all versions before Intrepid.

However, I don't understand why the scripts reload miredo when an ipv6

[Bug 90840] Cannot use NIC when T60 laptop is docked

2007-03-09 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
Public bug reported:

Using Edgy or snapshot of Feisty, the Ethernet controller is unusable
whenever my T60 laptop is in its docking station.

Loading the "dock" kernel module (ACPI) manually resolves the problem;
I've added it to /etc/modules but that's not within the reach of normal
users.

This is more problematic with the installer; dock does not seem to be
present on the Edgy i386 CD (but maybe I should not use a server install
CD, though); only fan, processor and thermal ACPI modules are there.

[Bug 24828] Re: IPv6 should be disabled by default

2007-04-01 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
I have serious doubts that blacklisting IPv6 really solves the problem.
glibc's getaddrinfo() will still query regardless, unless
AI_ADDRCONFIG flag is set. And it is very often *not* set, if only
because it is a "proprietary" GNU extension.

In other words, the problem is now fixed merely for some applications,
but surely not all of them, and particularly probably a bunch of apps in
Ubuntu universe.

IMHO, the proper solution would rather go along the lines of what MacOS
X does, i.e. only try if there is any non-loopback non-link-local
IPv6 address (and only try A is there is any non-loopback IPv4 address).
That means hacking glibc, and has nothing to do with the *kernel* IPv6
plugin. Also, I think it is much less likely that an application will
want to resolve in absence of IPv6 connectivity, than it is likely
that some Ubuntu users will want IPv6 connectivity, even though both are
uncommon situation in any case.

Finally, adding such a blacklist looks like an incoming source of
headaches if IPv6 is to ever be restored, and a nice source of Ubuntu
bashing from advanced users once Feisty is released.

To sum up, the real problems are that glibc only checks IPv6
connectivity if AI_ADDRCONFIG is set (this is a trivial hack to
sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c), and then glibc's check_pf considers IPv6
is available even if there is only ::1 or fe80::something which is
clearly wrong (this is a not-so-trivial to make_request from
sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/check_pf.c).

My 0,02€. Regards.

You won't think that way when Ubuntu gets dropped in favor of
your-favorite-IPv6-capable-proprietary-OS-here at some big government
agency, in some university campus, or by DVB-H users..., because for
some reason IPv6 ended up on the overhyped requirements list (even if
it won't be used in practice). But I'm getting off-topic

I don't. Is it a reason to break my working system?

Besides, it does not work either, since there were no need to set inet6
explicitly on lo so far.

ip6tables normally autoloads IPv6, which is the only sensical thing it
could do.

> 2) it is always executed before any real interface is up.

That's a side effect. In practice, lo is created by the kernel, and the
lo interface in /etc/network/interfaces is really a cosmetic entry.

If ipv6 gets loaded after some real interface is brought up, we get an
unfirewalled time window, which was the precise reason for not doing it
that way.

It *is* only DNS, or pre-2.6.9 kernels with the default onlink
assumption. Feisty has 2.6.20 plus glibc 2.5 with proper RFC3484
support.

> It appears somebody is using it this way and it was brought up as use

It appears many more people are using IPv6 and expect it to work out of
the box on their Ubuntu Feisty, as it did in Dapper and Edgy. From
reading the bug thread and the rants on freenode/#ipv6, I have a

ping6 is the only application that can handle this, which is of pretty
limited use. Also, when you're down to doing link diagnostics, you
probably cannot reach the DNS server, so you'd better use numerical
addresses anyway.

Also if both Apple and Microsoft does it that way on their
IPv6-by-default general purpose OSes, it might not be such a stupid
notion.

So you would consider that an hypotetical personally-developed
application, that breaks standard practices, and will only work on
Linux, is more important than non-hypotetical people using IPv6 that
are screwed by the last change?

Wasn't it a "balance" thing?

Yes. These changes will NOT AT ALL fix the timeout problem. But some
people reported there were "other" (unspecified?) issues than timeout.

glibc 2.5 (and kernel 2.6.17.2) will fix a bunch of other potential
IPv6-related inconviences:
It will not cause connection timeouts when trying to connect to a
dual-stack server from a dual-stack private-IPv6(ULAs) and IPv4 network,
as IPv4 will be attempted first.
Similarly, if you have sone clueless XP/Vista box advertising a 6to4 prefix
on the network: glibc 2.5 will prioritize IPv4 (unless the final destination
has a 6to4 address), whereas glibc 2.3 would prioritize IPv6.

Re: [Bug 24828] Re: IPv6 should be disabled by default

2007-04-03 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
First my apologies for the initial remark. I did not realize that
getaddrinfo() actually stopped doing if ipv6 was not loaded even
if AI_ADDRCONFIG was not set.

Answers inline.

So, how do I deploy Ubuntu with IPv6 to a large number of PCs with
non-techies users?

Even if I could modify the configuration manually, how do I cope with
configuration files updates from Ubuntu? dpkg will not deploy new
versions because the configuration files changed.

At the very least, the ipv6 blacklist should be in a file of its own so
that it does not prevent upgrading the rest of the file for people
still using IPv6.

That's not only immensely impractical for "human beings", the current
solution provides no sane exit strategy and upgrade path, which is the
most basic question to answer when deploying this kind of kludge.

Also the statement that this is "not an issue" because it's handled by
ifupdown is misleading. It misses the fact that most IPv6 systems are
using stateless autoconf (but I'm repeating comments already made by
other people).

On my system, the upgrade also had the very unkind effect of breaking
ip6tables completely, since IPv6 autoloading got disabled, and any sane
person will do firewall configuration before configuration the network
interfaces.

> What MacOS does is also not completely proper.

The MacOS X solution is far from perfect, but it is surely much less
worse than permanently killing IPv6 because of a few broken DNS caches.

> I can have only
> link-local address and use them to connect from one machine to
> another with proper entries in the DNS.

Any applications, with the possible exception of ping6, will
return "Invalid argument" error because the DNS resolver cannot
guess/set the scope ID in the IPv6 socket address structure. Futhermore
many applications cannot deal with link-local anyway because they do
not preserve the scope ID even if it's set.

On top of that, putting link-local in the DNS is against documented
standard practices.

The current solution does not handle this case either, in any practical
circumstance.

2010-04-19 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
Sorry, but thousands of people have been "reading video" and not
observing your problem. If you do not or cannot provide a more specific
description, we really cannot investigate your issue.

That being said, VLC should not be able to crash the whole system. Was
the hard drive under heavy activity when the crash occurred? If it was,
then it could be a heavy memory leak. But otherwise, it's most likely a
kernel driver bug or an X server issue.

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)

2010-04-20 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
Because of bug #416294, VLC had to disable ARGB X11 visuals in Xlib. In
my opinion, a ugly but nevertheless cosmetic issue in the tray icon is
much less severe than the inability to play any video. Hence we will not
re-enable ARGB visuals.

As a consequence, we cannot fix this bug. We would need a proper Qt4-x11
fix for #416294 (see http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-5464)
first, which is not forthcoming.
