[Bug 395515] [NEW] trackpad jumpy on Dell mini 10v

2009-07-04 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

boule% lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04
boule%

-- default ubuntu release, no re-spin of any kind, under gnome...

-- trackpad buttons integrated into lower corners of pad.
-- when attempting to drag (requires two fingers)
-- assume:
-- drag finger used on pad to drag.
-- click finger on button at bottom corner (left or right)

if the drag finger is ever raised, the cursor immediately jumps to the
extreme bottom corner nearest the click finger. The cursor seems to
jump to those locations even without raising the drag finger at times.

almost impossible to drag, often end up minimizing all windows, because
the jump to the bottom left corner where that button is placed. problem
is severe enough to be unusable by mere mortals.

I'm particularly patient... one can, being very careful, and in an error prone
manner, drag by ensuring that the click finger only contacts the pad to click,
and immediately raise thereafter.
This movement is unnatural (folks tend to rest their finger on the button while
finding the precise location.)

suggestion: de-sensitize area around buttons.

confirmed... it didn't work with the plasmoid, and it doesn't work with the
widget either.

WPA1 with known SSID, as well as and WPA2 with private SSID.

both cases work fine with Gnome nm-applet.

[Bug 378154] [NEW] python-qt qtdemo cannot find documentation.

2009-05-18 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-qt4-doc

on ubuntu jaunty, when you start up... python
examples/tools/qtdemo/qtdemo.py

you always get an error that it cannot find the documentation.

It's looking in a system configured docpath: /usr/share/qt4/doc/html.
That directory is empty, though.
The correct documentation is elsewhere (in python-qt4-doc package). to get it
working did this:

tough% sudo rmdir /usr/share/qt4/doc/html
tough% sudo ln -s /usr/share/doc/python-qt4-doc/html /usr/share/qt4/doc/html

no longer get the complaint. dunno if that's the right thing to do...

OK, I received the py_support version from a packaging expert, and just
about everything in debian/* is different. The new version works with
py_support as well as py_central in 32 and 64 bit.

initial responder jumped to a conclusion, marking the bug as invalid and
asking for the rules which were available to him if he had simply
downloaded the package and made an attempt to reproduce the problem. He
should have waited until after seeing the rules before drawing the
conclusion. The package can be downloaded, and easily reproduced. next
respondent should at least attempt to reproduce.

Re: [Bug 256992] Re: py_central-based package doesn't build on amd64

2008-09-14 Thread Peter Silva
Ever heard of the concept of an end case?

The fact that 99 packages build with py_central doesn't negate the
possibility that 1 will exercise something in an odd way without being
incorrect. The conclusion doesn't follow from your premise. You
complained that without the rules, you could not identify what the problem
is, the rules were given, yet there is no followup. It is not correct to
mark the bug invalid (unworthy of further investigation) without having
examined the rules to verify or refute your hypothesis.

How many py_central packages include modules written in C? I suspect the
pool of working packages just shrank remarkably, if there are now, say 10
such working packages. Your would still assume that mine is busted?

In any event, getting rid of py_central...

[Bug 256992] [NEW] py_central-based package doesn't build on amd64

2008-08-11 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

using dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot package builds properly on Kubuntu
8.04 in i386 (32 bit intel) but fails with:

/usr/bin/make DESTDIR=/home/peter/drobo/drobo-utils/trunk/debian/droboutils
install
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/peter/drobo/drobo-utils/trunk'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.

on AMD64 (also on 8.04). The software itself is fully functional on
AMD64, but I cannot build a .dpkg.

package source can be obtained from:

svn co https://drobo-utils.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/drobo-utils/trunk

(resulting binary dpkg's for i386 are on sf.net in downloads section.)

note that:

python setup.py install

works fine on AMD64. The package itself has no problems. however
the automation of handling of python packages using py_central doesn't seem to
know how to build the package on
when executing the same command line on 64bit AMD, the build

[Bug 322155] Re: laptop touchpad button shows unreliable behaviour after package upgrade in Jaunty

2009-02-01 Thread Peter Silva
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 320632 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/320632

This is not a duplicate 320632. This is about the physical buttons, not
the touch pad. The problem is not that the taps do not work as in the
other bug. Rather the left button (1) is very often being
misinterpreted as a middle button (2), in a wide variety of
applications.

-- when attempting to select text in Konsole, as you are dragging, it will
prematurely end, and paste the previous selection.
-- if you double click to select a word in konsole, the next single left click
causes a paste.
-- same thing in firefox (cannot select text, it pastes while trying.)
-- clicking on menus is interpreted as middle button, instead of left button.

the KDE window panes (the top, what's that called?) interpret left
button as middle, so cannot move windows.

fired up xev, and xev says shows the correct button presses reliably.

[Bug 222324] Re: Support for panasonic hotkeys missing

2009-02-02 Thread Peter Silva
the old independently maintained pcc-acpi kernel module I had been using with
8.10 no longer builds (lvalue) So I found a module which appears to be a close
cousin included in Jaunty's 2.6.28. however when I do

modprobe panasonic-laptop

it just hangs (modprobe never completes, cannot add any more kernel
modules...)

This is a three year old Panasonic CF-51. worked fine with pcc-acpi on
8.10

I'm running KDE 4, and plasma seems to have a memory leak. It looks like it
takes more and more memory, and then, I am guessing, a malloc fails in

[Bug 332407] [NEW] network manager broken

2009-02-20 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

was running find with Jaunty for the past month. on the 19th, did apt-
get upgrade to get latest stuff, and network-manager has been broken
since. It didn't work with a WPA-2 protected network at work, a WPA-1
PSK one at home, nor with plain old copper and DHCP. All of the above
worked well before then. Now nothing works at all unless I shutdown
NetworkManager completely and use /etc/network/interfaces instead. It
doesn't even work to use the manual interface and leave NetworkManager
running, because NM ensures there is no default route.

No way to get any type of network connection over any interfaces with NM
lately. Originally tried with knetworkmanager, but repeated same
symptoms with the plasmoid as well.

i did...

# start with serial log and tee it in a log file
NM_SERIAL_DEBUG=1 NetworkManager --no-daemon 2>&1 | tee /tmp/nm-serial.txt
added some logs for a sample... nm_wpa_log is the output from this..
to reproduce, I just startup network manager and it doesn't work, regardless of
iface.
it's an intel chipset, and connecting manually with copper at least, works
fine. so it's now hw.

do with KDE.

confirmed on kubuntu edgy, 6.10. easy url: http://www.cbc.ca/video
firefox 2.0 from ubuntu repositories, no extensions installed.
kaffeine starts up the stream, but firefox is dead.

on konqueror, it seems to crash also, but much later, can view
a few streams, but when you close the window, it dies.

(codecs etc... from easyubuntu, everything else is stock.)

[Bug 506816] Re: wl missing after Karmic -> Lucid upgrade

2010-03-29 Thread Peter Silva
Confirmed on my Dell Mini10v also. the driver is still loading, but never
works.
I can get an occasional iwconfig eth1 scan to give an answer, usually it says
it is not
available, but sometimes it works. I initially thought it was knetworkmanager,
but nm-applet doesn't work either. Neither does wpa_supplicant configured
manually.
wpa_supplicant manages to see the ap, tries to associate, but the that never
works (interfaces refuses to associate...) ... ok that was solid yesterday...
today it associates,
but dhclient doesn't seem to grok things... but on the second or third try, it
does!

today (after a week being connected via copper) it works (manually with
wpa_client, have not tried full nm glory.)

I tried b43 drivers, and eth1 would not even show up.

I did apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source...
then re-installed them. behaviour is exactly the same.

once in a very rare while, I can get it to associate, and then dhcp works
and I get an address. but that never works with network-manager,
and even manually if I shutdown and restart the interface, I don't get it back,
it just decides never to associate again.

It almost never succeeds in associating (to a dlink DIR655 router with
n+g enabled.) The weird thing is that it isn't quite never... just
really rarely.

[Bug 549587] Re: unable to connect to WPA, erratic secrets

2010-03-30 Thread Peter Silva
It looked like a problem with broadcomm wireless driver for a day or two, but
now
that is working, but nm is still not. I can connect with a manual
wpa_supplicant.conf file
and /etc/network/interfaces setup properly... works right away.

If I comment those entries in /etc/network/interfaces out, so that nm will
manage them,
it never succeeds in bringing the wireless up... not with knetworkmanager,
nm-applet, nor with cnetworkmanager, They never succeed in getting the
interface to associate.

[Bug 572777] Re: NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant timing out when connecting wireless

2010-05-22 Thread Peter Silva
I have been chasing this problem since January. have tried various
network manager clients, tried changing drivers for bcm4322 (in a Dell
Mini 10v) and nothing worked. The symptom was that it would be very
erratic about connecting to the access point. It would take, oh five
minutes or so before the connection would come up in knetworkmanager,
and then once in a while it would lose it. Sometimes, it would simply
never associate (for hours or days) then it would start working again
for hours or days. All this with equipment that worked without issues
under 9.10, and the access point works fine with other laptops.

Tried Nils' recipe to install 0.6.10 wpa_supplicant, and that broke nm
completely until I removed the "-s"
from /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/fi.epitest.hostap.WPASupplicant.service
as suggested by spanna.

Now connects instantaneously afaict. As the problem is intermittent,
will continue to test for a week or two, but this does look like it
fixes what was wrong.

Thanks to Nils and spanna!

I think this bug should be rated high priority because:
-- I think this is a very common configuration.
-- this result is that wireless is "broken" (for anyone using WPA with
certain hw.)
-- while I managed to do this fix, it is pretty involved for most people.
I think most people would just give up and switch OS. ( I was close to
reverting to 9.10 )

will report back to confirm fixedness.

[Bug 549587] [NEW] unable to connect to WPA, erratic secrets

2010-03-27 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

boule% lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04
boule%

WPA wireless N network(Linksys DIR-655 router, WPA) was working reliably under
Karmic Kubuntu using either knetworkmanager or nm-applet. Since upgrade to
Lucid, it is very difficult to connect using: knetworkmanager, and/or
nm-applet. (started trying the others because knetworkmanager was at around 10%
success rate.) nm-applet seems to work more often than the others, but it is
still only, perhaps 30% successful. I downloaded cnetworkmanager (python line
mode api to dbus/networkmanager) to better see what is going on, similar rate
of success to nm-applet

none of the tools seem to store the SSID password anymore, always have
to re-enter it manually.

What is the correct kde network manager applet: network-manager-kde
(kwifimanager) or the plasmoid?

Regardless of method, they see the SSID, and try to connect, but rarely
succeed just hang in ´connecting´ or ´activating´ and eventually
give up.

Often resorting to hard-wired connection.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1883493] Re: amdgpu hangs from time to time with *ERROR* Waiting for fences timed out!

2021-01-02 Thread Peter Silva
for people using stable 20.04:

I used apt-cache to notice kernel 5.8 was in the repos (no special ones in use.)
I don't get why it is there and not used, but decided to try it.

I did:

sudo apt install linux-image-5.8.0-33-generic

then rebooted, and had no networking... then did:

sudo apt install linux-modules-extra-5.8.0-33-generic

and everything is working again, and I can use google maps without fear.
not sure If I will get kernel updates though...

[Bug 1753510] Re: Cannot boot/install AMD Ryzen 2400G

2018-09-03 Thread Peter Silva
tried again with 4.19rc2. Stripped off all other usb peripherals
(including existing mouse & kb), only had the internal (windows) SSD and
the usb one I am plugging in. Now using a logitech K400 or so, which
seems compatible with everything. When I boot, it dumps me into
(initramfs) prompt, and I can use it. If I do ls /dev, I see sda, sda1,
sda2, sda3 and no other disk partitions. When I try to mount them, I
find they are the windows SSD that is SATA connected. It doesn't see
the externally USB connected drive.

So I disconnected the windows SSD, removed the other SSD from the
enclosure and connected it the ubuntu SSD via SATA. Now I can get a
reproducible crash. picture coming.

2018-08-05 Thread Peter Silva
It''s on my disk checked out, but this is a whole kernel... not sure how to
get correct configs and such.

Can you point at a HOWTO or something? This is a whole kernel, not just a
driver. Haven't had to build a kernel from source in 15 years or more.
There aren't any Debian bits... where do I get the bits to build .deb's
from the kernel? or do I just make, make install ?

Re: [Bug 1753510] Re: Cannot boot/install AMD Ryzen 2400G

2018-08-11 Thread Peter Silva
if it is of interest, I could buy a USB debugging cable and give you
access...
saw this:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v4.17/driver-api/usb/usb3-debug-port.html
but I would have to order the cable. Recommendations welcome.

Do you think it is possible to have the other computer be a raspberry pi
(which is only USB-2)?
If so, it would be easy to just connect and leave it that way for hours.
If both ends need to be
usb-3, then I need a second USB-3 host and it's a bit more cumbersome.

did a series of boots with 4.18.rc6, rcu=0-3, rcu=0-7, from power off,
from reset (behaviour is always different from power on versus when
starting from a reset.) applied the radion and amdgpu options above, no
success. The behaviour varies (sometimes hang, sometimes crash,
sometimes loop infinitely, once in a while get to initramfs prompt.)

[Bug 1753510] Re: Cannot boot/install AMD Ryzen 2400G

2018-06-06 Thread Peter Silva
tried with nospectre_v2 rcu_nocbs=0-7

the behaviour changed, and it got out of the initial loop, but
eventually it still crashed.

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-03-01 Thread Peter Silva
I now have drivers from bionic proposed, the problem I had before
was that I had attempted to manually correc nvidia-drm-outputclass-ubuntu.conf
by commenting out the lines which had caused errors before,
and re-installing wasn't overwriting it.
I returned it to default state. I can now get the lightdm up.

on xorg.0.log it seems to load now, I get to the login dialog,
but none of my sessions will load ( I just go back to the lightdm dialog.)
there are no errors, it just dumps me back at the lightdm
screen. I added a bunch of -desktop packages to see if it was an
environment thing. The failure to login happens with *ubuntu*, *unity
(default)*, *Ubuntu on Wayland*. With *mate* it doesn't exist, but I get a
screen with a single icon, and no other elements of a desktop, so I can only
open
shells.

2018-03-01 Thread Peter Silva
OK, video is back now: apt-install ubuntu-mate-desktop fixed something.
It was already installed, but doing it again tickled something. I logged into
mater, and there was half a dozen core dumps of various components, and then
everything started working. (I don´t actually use mate, it was just trying
to see if issue was related to desktop environment in use.) I logged out, and
now everything is now normal again.

now I can log in again, with the same environment I had before the problem.
I´ve now commented out bionic proposed from /etc/apt/sources.list
stuff looks ok.

[Bug 1753510] [NEW] Cannot boot/install AMD Ryzen 2400G

2018-03-05 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

Did a motherboard swap on a trusty old computer that ran ubuntu for 10 years or
so. Now it only runs windows (same hardware fresh installs windows with no
issue). brand new ryzen 2nd gen with graphics.

I know about graphics drivers issues, wasn't expecting that to be dealt with.
Just trying to use it as a cpu. So I put in an older (RADEON HD 7850 pitcairn)
video card to get some functionality.

Without the video card, it boots, but the display is unusable. I can ssh
in and see that it works fine as a server, but cannot use terminal or
graphical display.

With the video card, Put daily ubuntu Bionic image, and "Try Ubuntu",
and it goes into an infinite loop. photo attached. I tried 16.04.4 and
I think it just went into a blank screen.

[Bug 1220495] [NEW] dhclient -6 hangs... regression from precise

2013-09-03 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

Have a valid IPv6 network that works with precise using both
/etc/network/interfaces and network-manager (with caveats about known
bugs wrt default routes in ipv6 in precise) Precise hosts get their
addresses using dhclient, and the ifup or whatever completes and
returns.

In Saucy, dhclient -6 just hangs and never returns

Was hoping to upgrade to get rid of IPv6 bugs, but it's actually worse.

[Bug 935304] [NEW] lost java6 file associations in unity

2012-02-18 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

have both openjdk-6-jre and openjdk-7-jre installed. Minecraft.jar
requires 6. At some point, the file association for 6 disappeared (used
to have options for both), and I can only associate the file with
(incompatible) java 7, or archive manager (useless.) was working for
several months. Total mystery how to create associations in unity, so
stumped.

to reproduce, have a minecraft.jar on the desktop. click on it,
something useless happens. right click to change file association, no
options available for java6, in spite of it being installed.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 935556] [NEW] minecraft crash with openjdk-7, some sort of search path issue.

2012-02-18 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

running minecraft in openjdk-7, even though there are 64bit libraries
available, it tries to link to the 32bit ones. This is on a 64bit
machine.

[Bug 1380996] Re: File size for backups not user-defineable

2015-05-06 Thread Peter Silva
here is a very small patch that just adds a dconf setting. So people
who do not care, will not see it. But I need it. I did some backups
with 250MB chunks, and I did not notice any slow down vs. 25mb chunks
that are the default, but I don't really care how long it takes, I need
the big chunks on the other end.

** Patch added: "patch to add dconf setting so that only advanced users see it."

[Bug 1424491] Re: apt-get fails to install fglrx or fglrx-updates in 14.04.2 and 12.04.5

2015-04-05 Thread Peter Silva
Affects me too with an ASUS video card with AMD HD 7850. It started
because I had a really poor frame rate on Steam game CS:GO. was trying
to get latest driver from AMD (14.5) but it would never work (could not
get GL to work with the driver installed, had no unity, GL failed to
load) so backed out to open source driver, and then updated to the
hardware enablement stack, and tried to install just the normal fglrx.
no go. so now steam works, but I'm on the open drivers, and cannot
really play CS:GO at all (frame rate unusable.)

Re: [Bug 1220146] Re: Ralink Mediatek 14c3:7630 wi-fi card isn't supported out of the box

2015-04-06 Thread Peter Silva
@lubensius, thank you very much for your work, but it is very hard to
determine what there is to integrate. I tried to find your patches to
apply them to kubamoo. If you published a starting tree that was the
original mediatek code, and then committed your your changes, we could
understand the patches. It is very difficult to identify your changes
because it is just the whole tree, and the june 2014 driver is now hard to
find, because mediatek published an updated driver later in the year. It
is hard to compare with kubamoo work because Jakub re-structured the source
significantly, so the likelihood of being able to pick up your changes is
slim.

thanks.

[Bug 1220146] Re: Ralink Mediatek 14c3:7630 wi-fi card isn't supported out of the box

2015-03-15 Thread Peter Silva
I bough an Asus G771, and it uses this chip for bt, wireless, and copper
ethernet, and none of the work properly. The ethernet seems to work,
but every few minutes it hangs, and comes back after a minute or so.
plugged in a third-party usb->gig for now. Without that, no networking
at all.

2015-03-16 Thread Peter Silva
the ethernet problem is fixed now, was caused by my network (duplicate
IP assignment), not the driver. the wireless seems to work, but if the
radio is on, even if not associated to an AP, I lose a whole cpu (100%
ksoftirq) drives the cpu temperature up 10 degrees C, so I can only
imagine what it does to battery life.

oh.. I just noticed no-one confirmed for bt yet, so:
I use a bluetooth headset at the same time as the wireless, and it is

for what it's worth, although top show it is much better, when I look with
'powertop' the story still looks not to good (but definitely much better
than before Jakub's patch)
It still says 26.6 of 29.1 W (>90% ?) is going to the wlan ? Seems like a
heck of a lot of power for wireless lan? makes no sense. I'm not very
knowledgeable of powertop, perhaps I just do not understand the display.

by the way, this isn't streaming or anything, there is chrome running, with
a gmail window and some local terminals. No real network traffic at all.

[Bug 1140716] Re: [regression] 3.5.0-26-generic and 3.2.0-39-generic GPU hangs on Sandybridge

2013-10-17 Thread Peter Silva
On Saucy. When I run minecraft, after a few minutes, it locks up the screen.
Ctrl-Alt-F1, to get to a tty... I see:

Hang check elapsed *ERROR* stuck on render ring.
render ring stuck inside bo (0xaf4d000 ctx 1) at 0xaf4d1d8

this happens every couple of minutes...

The crash detection happens, and it tries to report, over and over again, but
the report never succeeds. I do not think the reports are getting through.
fwiw. I am patched upto today on launch day
 (2013/10/17) and it still happens.

[Bug 1013597] Re: No default route for stateful DHCPv6

2013-09-02 Thread Peter Silva
Please fix for 12.04. prevents deployment of IPv6 at any organization
(please don't tell me anyone with a managed network is going to do
SLAAC.)

[Bug 1368688] Re: Inconsistence between /etc/init and /etc/init.d files

2014-09-27 Thread Peter Silva
also, both the ipv4 and ipv6 upstart conf files reference /etc/default
/isc-dhcp-server, which will never be a good thing, as the normal case
is to be running both, and they can never use the same config file,
which is set there.

[Bug 1368688] Re: Inconsistence between /etc/init and /etc/init.d files

2014-09-27 Thread Peter Silva
Another inconsistency... /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server refers to the variable
DHCPD_CONF which is used by /etc/init.d scripts.
the upstart procedure uses only CONFIG_FILE. So following the instructions in
/etc/default/isc-dhcp-server results in a dhcp server that starts well from
init.d, but fails with a syntax error from upstart.

[Bug 1100874] [NEW] lockscreen presents no unlock dialog

2013-01-17 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

Standard Unity. Have a laptop on a docking station, with a second
monitor connected. Lock the screen, go away for sufficient time for the
displays to blank. when I return, hit a key, the external display
powers up, but just shows me the background set for my account, no
dialog to unlock the screen, the laptop display does not even power up.
no way to unlock the screen. I move the mouse around, to where it
should be on the laptop screen, but that screen stays dark. There is
no disk activity and no cpu load during this event, it is not busy, it
just does not present the dialog.

I do not know if this is what fixes it, but I do it every time:
Ctrl-F1, log into a terminal session, then switch back and forth
Ctrl-F7 a few times and after a few minutes it will present a dialog,
and can then unlock.

[Bug 658521] Re: [Marvell 9128 PCIe SATA] In Live session or installation HD not recognized

2011-11-19 Thread Peter Silva
I have upgrded to oneiric. The controller is recongized and working
with 2.6.38 from natty, but 3.0.0 from oneiric sees no drives. I also
tried upstream kernel 3.1 a few weeks ago and no drives there either. I
opened this corresponding bug @ kernel.org, but it's down...

[Bug 862348] [NEW] phantom RFKILL switch disables wireless after boot.

2011-09-29 Thread Peter Silva
Public bug reported:

was running oneiric for a month or two. did upgrade on 2011/09/27. Prior
to that date was working fine. Now It works for a few minutes after
boot, but after a short time, network-manager has wireless grayed out
disabled. It says "wireless disabled by hardware switch". rfkill list
says "hard blocked: yes" This laptop has no switch. no work-around I
can see, using a patch cable for now.

It's an ath9k driver, on a gateway LT3201 (AMD Nile chipset)

[Bug 862348] Re: phantom RFKILL switch disables wireless after boot.

2011-09-29 Thread Peter Silva
never mind... It's a feature, not a bug.
It's just that the hardware switch started working, (where it didn't before)
there is a keyboard combination that does it, and that works fine.
closed/abandoned/whatever
