[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2012-04-06 Thread Pedro Bessa
12.04 is near. The LIM Button can't be made until 12.04, but the global
menu for maximized windows only can. These features are evolving,
anyway. What if we have the global menu for maximized windows only in
12.04 and the LIM Button in 12.10?

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2012-03-14 Thread Pedro Bessa
I loved the windicator icon size, because it's an arrow inside an
ellipse and it's a wide icon, so I won't have to strive to target the
mouse pointer to the icon.

Combining lim1 and lim2, put the green icon's m inside the windicator
icon's ellipse and use the green icon functionality in the ellipse with
m.

[Bug 899610] Re: ccsm crashed with UnboundLocalError in HandleModifierRemoved(): local variable 'new' referenced before assignment

2012-04-15 Thread Pedro Bessa
I said: "CTRL is a better home for HUD than ALT, because:

1
Super is expressive and cryptic.
hit Super once and it's expressive. Regular users like it this way.
hold Super, then hit a key and it's crptic. Hackers like it this way.
CTRL can be expressive and cryptic at the same time.
A rule can be created in the user's mind.
You hit modifier once for for expressive gui.
You hold modifer, then hit a key for cryptic shortcut.

2
Because of copy, paste, cut, paste and find, CTRL is heavily associated with
cryptic menu shortcuts, so make CTRL be heavily associated with expressive menu
shortcuts too.

3
CTRL shortcuts (c, v, x, v, f) are more important than ALT shortcuts, so people
are more used to typing CTRL shortcuts

4
the press says HUD is solving a problem that doesn't exist, so people are
unlikely to use HUD
people are more likely to type CTRL than ALT, so they are more likely to
discover HUD in CTRL than in ALT, so they're more likely to use HUD in CTRL
than in ALT

5
Mark complained that alt is taken
This can free alt

6
Jo wants hud to have shortcuts.
CTRL+C is copy whether you want it or not, let the user bind more HUD actions
to CTRL.

I was replied: "use ccsm to select Ctrl as the key to show the HUD".

Becareful. Hitting ALT should show HUD, holding ALT should do nothing or show
all shortcuts, because if holding ALT shows HUD when you hit a key to try a
shortcut, you will paste the key in HUD instead of running the shortcut.

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2012-02-15 Thread Pedro Bessa
I saw the solution screenshot. It's an icon that shows a non-persistent
menu when clicked. If people complain that they're trying hard to target
the mouse pointer, because the icon is too small, do as I say:

These things are called app buttons. The Firefox app button is the label
Firefox inside a button. Make the *app name*'s app button be the label
*app name* inside a button. So we would have: close, minimize, maximize,
title - app name (as a label inside a button).

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

In Windows, the Firefox app button is on top left. Since titles vary in
length and it's good to have the app button always in the same place,
because it makes finding the app button easier, we would better have:
close minimize maximize [app name] title.

[Bug 701294] Re: Always show menu bar for non-maximised windows

2011-09-28 Thread Pedro Bessa
on maximized windows
I see the window title and no menu bar, then see the menu bar where the window
title is on mouse over
It's not consistent.
on non-maximized windows
I *don't* see the window title and no menu bar, then see the menu bar where the
window title is on mouse over
To be consistent:
on non-maximized windows
I *should* see the window title and no menu bar, then see the menu bar where
the window title is on mouse over *again*

window controls appear on top left in a non-maximized window
It's not consistent.
the launcher autohides and the window controls appear more to the right in a
maximized window
To be consistent:
the launcher is always visible and the window controls appear on top left in a
maximized window again

But what I really, REALLY want is:
the launcher always visible
on maximized windows
I see window controls and window title on top bar and the menu bar always
visible below them
on non-maximized windows
I see window controls and window title on top of the non-maximized window and
the menu bar always visible below them

And the advantage of my real approach is:
twice less vertical space occupied
(top bar, bottom bar, title bar, menu bar on maverick vs top bar and menu bar
on oneiric)

I have Xubuntu 12.04. I went update-manager -d. I'm typing during ">

2012-10-19 Thread Pedro Bessa
CONGRATULATIONS, MR. MACKEY!

I'm a programmer and I tried to solve the problem, but I had to finish
learning C and C++, and learn GTK+, Nux, Compiz and OpenGL, but when I
thought I had to learn Nux and Compiz from their source codes, because I
couldn't find their documentations, I got scared and gave up solving the
problem, so I congratulate you for knowing C, C++, GTK+, Nux, Compiz and
OpenGL, and solving the problem.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu

2012-10-12 Thread Pedro Bessa
The worry:
When a title is on the middle of the screen, your pointer is above the title,
you want to click a thing slightly below the title and you move the pointer
from above the title to slightly below the title, the menu bar appears on top
of the thing and you click a menu item instead of the thing.

The relief:
Firefox has an app button. To use it, disable the Global Menu Bar Integration
add-on, restart Firefox, right-click the Home icon, deselect Menu Bar. In the
Firefox app button, menu items display sub-menu on a slightly delayed hover.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=589146

You mouse over the title bar, after a slight delay, the menu bar appears.
You mouse out of the title and menu bars, after a slight delay, the menu bar
disappears.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu

2012-10-12 Thread Pedro Bessa
When the app opens, show the menu bar for a few seconds, then hide it.
Warning: the menu bar floats above the app content, because they're layers.

for consistency: window controls are always visible and appear by the
left of the title in non-maximized windows, so they should be always
visible and appear there too in maximized windows

for discoverability: google mobile is going to use three horizontal
lines to represent a list and shows the Google service and product list
when clicked, so instead of showing the menu bar for a few seconds, then
hiding it, we could use an yellow icon with three vertical lines inside
a circle by the right of the window title that represents a list and
shows the menu bar when hovered or touched

(These two wishes are very good for tablets, because we don't keep track
of the user's finger position in the air, so the user won't hover
anything, so the user will see the icon and intentionally touch it.)

Agreed?

[Bug 1072692] [NEW] tablet research request, if proven true, critical bug

2012-10-29 Thread Pedro Bessa
Public bug reported:

Mark Shuttleworth noticed that people use ten apps at most, so he put
the launcher on the left. If people used fifteen apps at most, he would
have to put the launcher on bottom.

If people use 15 apps at most in a tablet, you will have to move the
launcher from the left to the bottom. So.. How many apps do people use
at most in a tablet?

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-09-30 Thread Pedro Bessa
+1 Rachel

Unity users want different things here. Beyond, I think Unity developers
want different things here too, because Ayatana Design has Fix
Committed, but it can't get the other projects to have Fix Committed
too, so it looks like the other projects are disagreeing with Ayatana
Design.

Gnome Shell has https://extensions.gnome.org/ An extension ecosystem is
gold. Gnome Shell doesn't realize it has gold, so isn't shipped with
extension support and doesn't make the extension support package
visible. The Gnome Shell extension ecosystem was created and published
by Gnome Shell community developers.

I remember a rich friend saying in Russia, people had one shoe size for
all. People would go to Ubuntu Software Center, click Ubuntu Extensions,
view global menu options and click install in the same row or view LIM
in a row and click Install in the same row. You wouldn't have to worry
about giving us one shoe size.

What do you think?

[Bug 873541] Re: misaligned close, minimize and maximize

2012-09-09 Thread Pedro Bessa
When I argued in unity-design that the dash should be in the corner,
Mark Shuttleworth mentioned fitts' law. Firefox tried to use one close
button for all tabs first, one close button per tab later, so people
found easy to click lots of close buttons scattered in the screen, so
people will find easy to click only one close button that is not at the
edge of the screen.

Dash was removed from the corner and placed in the launcher, because
it's an app. I agree, so it will remain in the launcher, but I want the
launcher to go all the way up to the top, cutting width from the top
bar.

So I criticize close-in-the-corner to create dash-in-the-corner to
realign the window rectangles.

There were three alternatives.
[] global menu on
[] global menu off
[] global menu only on maximized windows
We came up with new alternatives.
[] mockup 1
[] mockup 2
[] LIM

we need to:
- vote on the new alternatives / mockups until 100 votes
- count votes
- ***decide*** the lead alternative

The Ubuntu Community must pressure the Ubuntu team a lot to get the lead
alternative implemented.

By the way, here is my vote:

I only misclick a menu item if the menu opens unintentionally. When I

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2012-01-09 Thread Pedro Bessa
I worked on this global menu for six hours with only one meal break to
give you this final comment!

In maximized windows, if you hover " - ", the
menus replace " - ", so you can click a menu and
so you can't drag-and-drop the window, because there's no space left in
the screen to move the window.

In non-maximized windows, when you click " - ",
the window is highlighted (with outter line in strong yellow and inner
content in light yellow, this is like compiz, when you're dragging-and-
dropping windows), so you can hold the click down to drag-and-drop the
window.

In non-maximized windows, when you hover " -
" for a short while, the menus appear and persist below the
title bar, the becomes an and when you hover
" - " for a short while, the menus
disappear and dispersist from below the title bar.

OK, so what do you say?

[Bug 881890] Re: the average rating problem

2012-01-14 Thread Pedro Bessa
An example? Ok!

Firefox is a software that many people are interested in using.
Renmina is a software that few people are interested in using.

Firefox browses the internet well.
Renmina connects to remote desktops excellently.
Firefox does what its author says that it does well.
Renmina does what its author says that it does excellently.

So Renmina appears above Firefox, but Renmina should appear below
Firefox in the Ubuntu Sofware Store ranking.

Firefox knows how many people use a software from how many people ask the AMO
(Addons.Mozilla.Org) server for updates to the software.
If 1000 people ask AMO for updates to AdBlock Plus, then 1000 people are using
AdBlock Plus.
Ubuntu could know how many people use a software from how many people ask the
Launchpad server for updates.
If 1000 people ask Launchpad for updates to Firefox, then 1000 people are using
Firefox.

Please, make software that many people are interested in using appear
above software that few people are interested in using. thx!

expect to find a button to toggle menu visibility in the maximized

I want a button to toggle menu visibility in the maximized windows,
because of consistency, so there are two advantages, consistency and
discoverability now.

2011-11-23 Thread Pedro Bessa
"Also, this would make moving a window (dragging it from its top bar) harder."
We can't have a global menu on non-maximized windows. Let's not have a global
menu on maximized windows. Then, the look will be consistent.

You don't need the global menu. Maverick had four vertical bars (top,
title, menu, bottom), Natty had two vertical bars with title and
launcher always visible (title and menu). You halved the vertical bars!
What an achievement! Apple and Microsoft didn't do that! Please, be
satisfied!

Google recently phased out lots of apps and app features that didn't
work. Since you're attached to the global menu, first let people toggle
it on and off in 12.04, then phase it out in 12.10.

I have just seen Firefox in Windows 7.
The drag-and-drop behavior is different when the window is maximized and not
maximized.
When maximized, the window title bar has the firefox button, is filled with
tabs and has no space to drag-and-drop.
When not maximized, the window title bar has the firefox button, has no tabs
and is filled with space to drag-and-drop.

steps to reproduce:

actual results:
although many people are interested in using Firefox and few people are

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2011-12-23 Thread Pedro Bessa
If I could create an app that changed the global menu behavior and
appearance, I would. If I could put the app in Ubuntu Software Center, I
would.

Firefox lets programmers change all of Firefox's behavior and
appearance. Firefox plays with the imagination of programmers, invites
work from programmers, makes the Firefox platform cooler.

Just like that, Unity should let programmers change all of Unity's
behavior and appearance too. Unity should play with the imagination of
programmers, invite work from programmers and make the Unity platform
cooler.

Do you agree with me?

FIrefox uses XML DOM with insertBefore, removeChild, setAttribute and
CreateElement to position, remove, edit and add anything. I want XML DOM
without Javascript if possible, because Javascript is for the web, for the
browser and Unity is for the desktop, for the operating system.

Your leader is really ambitious. Marc Shuttleworth said: Ubuntu will
surpass Apple, go to 100 million users in 4 years or something. The Mac
OS X interface has a hell lot of useful things. Ubuntu adds Tomboy's
Notes and Nepomuk to the Ubuntu CD. Mac OS X probably permits, buys and
adds apps that change the Mac OS X interface to the Mac OS X CD. I hope
I'm right and we already know. Please, discover how they decide on a
useful thing in a blink, because you're taking two cycles to decide on
something totally easy like the global menu.

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2012-01-01 Thread Pedro Bessa
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~janousek.jiri/+junk/jjdesktop/files/head:/src/windecor/

sudo apt-get source unity
~/unity*version*
ctrl+f
backend
ctrl+f
vala

The Unity interface source code should be in the Unity source code.

By the way, in Ubuntu Software Center -> Edit -> Software Channels, I
want "[] source code" to be "[] source code download button in package
detail page". Since programmers don't know everything, they'll ask you
to add "a list of technologies used". Since programmers are curious,
they'll ask you to add "search packages by technologies".

What's programmed in Lua, built World of Warcraft, generates $1.44 billion
yearly?
What's databased in HBase, Google's Big Table clone
(http://nosql-database.org/)?
What's frameworked in Catalyst, the most loved framework
(http://amplicate.com/love/catalyst)?
What's served in Apache, the server that shows up in my computer withOUT an "It
works!" page?

[Bug 1000011] [NEW] apps installed from source are hard to lock in launcher

2012-05-15 Thread Pedro Bessa
Public bug reported:

1. get Sublime Text 2 from http://www.sublimetext.com/2
2. install it
3. launch it
4. lock it in Launcher
5. close it

Expected Results: Sublime Text 2 remains locked in launcher
Actual Results: Sublime Text 2 isn't locked in launcher any longer

Additional Comments: it's laborious to create a .desktop file for
Sublime Text 2, an other for Instantbird 1, yet an other for Firefox 13
Beta etc, because the inside of a typical .desktop file is long

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu

2012-11-08 Thread Pedro Bessa
manny,

you wanted title bar click to toggle the menu bar. If people didn't want
it, you said you would accept title bar hover to toggle the menu bar.
I'm going to go with you! :-) I want title bar hover to toggle the menu
bar.

Soon, I want:
- when the app is launched, the menu bar must appear for three seconds, then
disappear for discoverability
- instead of toggle, unless it's needed (
install mozilla labs' lesschrome hd, hover tab bar, hover page content *
)
- instead of hover, slightly delayed hover (
turn off global menu bar integration, restart fx, turn off menu bar, click app
button, slightly delayed hover a menu item **
)

Later, if all this works, I want:
- not only the menu bar, all bars under the title bar
- not only all bars under the title bar, window controls

[Bug 1076751] [NEW] window controls are small for tablets, that is, for fingers

2012-11-08 Thread Pedro Bessa
Public bug reported:

1. put the pointer in the top bar
2. pay attention to the size of minimize and your finger
3. put your finger on top of minimize
expected: a finger can click minimize without clicking close and maximize
actual: you'll click minimize, but you'll also click close and maximize
additional information: People have X dollars to buy computers. They're buying
tablets *instead* of desktops. Microsoft changed the Windows 7 UI radically
into the Windows 8 UI. If Microsoft didn't, people would buy iOS instead of
Windows. If Microsoft didn't, Microsoft would be in the past. Ubuntu already
wants to be in tablets. Firefox and Google mobile already exist.

[Bug 873541] Re: misaligned close, minimize and maximize

2012-11-12 Thread Pedro Bessa
Shane, you speak so clearly! Please, restart helping me.

Please, move the launcher to the bottom of the screen, because it's looking
weird on the left of the screen, because window controls look like they apply
to the launcher and the window when in fact they apply to the window only.

Please, move indicators to the bottom-right of the screen, because it's
looking like indicators belong to the window when in fact they belong to
the distro.

You're looking weird. How come you do nothing about it?

[Bug 1075685] [NEW] the ranking bug

2012-11-06 Thread Pedro Bessa
Public bug reported:

The ranking bug is: the people who use Stellarium say it's high quality,
but the people who have no interest in using Stellarium won't ever say
it's low quality, because they won't use it at all, so Stellarium will
be ranked high even though Stellarium isn't interesting.

You have sort by quality (stars), but I want more. All download web
sites have sort by popularity. In Download.com's case, popularity is
number of downloads. In addons.mozilla.org's case, the popularity of an
add-on is the number of people who request updates for an add-on from
Mozilla's servers in a day which is the number of users. I want you to

[Bug 931245] Re: Finish the implementation of the locally integrated menubars

2012-03-25 Thread Pedro Bessa
my solution -> ellipse.png is attached
best solution -> https://launchpadlibrarian.net/97878037/LIM%20button.png

Tell Marco Trevisan: "If the LIM button at
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/97878037/LIM%20button.png appears in
Precise Pangolin, you can safely say it's a main feature like Ubuntu
HUD, because you saw the global menu bug report heat. Your patch was
near the LIM button, so you have 80% of the code for the LIM button
already done. We weren't expecting you to have that, so we said that the
LIM button won't be in 12.04. Keep the global menu bug report heat in
mind. Keep the end of april which is the precise pangolin release date
in mind. Please, implement the LIM button ASAP!"

We're 13 days away from Ubuntu April, 2012.

Here, greeks and trojans argued a lot. Some want global menu for
maximized windows only, others want app buttons instead of menu bars. I
don't think the Ubuntu team be able to please greeks and trojans.

What's decided by the end of this hot bug report?

[Bug 873541] Re: misaligned close, minimize and maximize

2011-10-31 Thread Pedro Bessa
While Canonical would still like to tweak the user experience further, most
such changes will be put on hold so that this Long Term Support release can
focus on "polish, performance, and predictability," he added.
-
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/242237/as_ubuntu_linux_turns_7_precise_pangolin_planning_begins.html

Canonical said so: polish! This bug report wants a polish. Will the
polish be available as a simple update, a complicated ppa update or a
far-in-the-future distribution upgrade? (Please, be simple update!)
