[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

[Bug 899610] Re: ccsm crashed with UnboundLocalError in HandleModifierRemoved(): local variable 'new' referenced before assignment
I said: "CTRL is a better home for HUD than ALT, because: 1 Super is expressive and cryptic. hit Super once and it's expressive. Regular users like it this way. hold Super, then hit a key and it's crptic. Hackers like it this way. CTRL can be expressive and cryptic at the same time. A rule can be created in the user's mind. You hit modifier once for for expressive gui. You hold modifer, then hit a key for cryptic shortcut. 2 Because of copy, paste, cut, paste and find, CTRL is heavily associated with cryptic menu shortcuts, so make CTRL be heavily associated with expressive menu shortcuts too. 3 CTRL shortcuts (c, v, x, v, f) are more important than ALT shortcuts, so people are more used to typing CTRL shortcuts 4 the press says HUD is solving a problem that doesn't exist, so people are unlikely to use HUD people are more likely to type CTRL than ALT, so they are more likely to discover HUD in CTRL than in ALT, so they're more likely to use HUD in CTRL than in ALT 5 Mark complained that alt is taken This can free alt 6 Jo wants hud to have shortcuts. CTRL+C is copy whether you want it or not, let the user bind more HUD actions to CTRL. I was replied: "use ccsm to select Ctrl as the key to show the HUD". Becareful. Hitting ALT should show HUD, holding ALT should do nothing or show all shortcuts, because if holding ALT shows HUD when you hit a key to try a shortcut, you will paste the key in HUD instead of running the shortcut. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/899610 Title: ccsm crashed with UnboundLocalError in HandleModifierRemoved(): local variable 'new' referenced before assignment To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compizconfig-settings-manager/+bug/899610/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I saw the solution screenshot. It's an icon that shows a non-persistent menu when clicked. If people complain that they're trying hard to target the mouse pointer, because the icon is too small, do as I say: These things are called app buttons. [Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus
+1 Rachel Unity users want different things here. Beyond, I think Unity developers want different things here too, because Ayatana Design has Fix Committed, but it can't get the other projects to have Fix Committed too, so it looks like the other projects are disagreeing with Ayatana Design. Gnome Shell has https://extensions.gnome.org/ An extension ecosystem is gold. Gnome Shell doesn't realize it has gold, so isn't shipped with extension support and doesn't make the extension support package visible. The Gnome Shell extension ecosystem was created and published by Gnome Shell community developers. I remember a rich friend saying in Russia, people had one shoe size for all. People would go to Ubuntu Software Center, click Ubuntu Extensions, view global menu options and click install in the same row or view LIM in a row and click Install in the same row. You wouldn't have to worry about giving us one shoe size. [Bug 873541] Re: misaligned close, minimize and maximize
When I argued in unity-design that the dash should be in the corner, Mark Shuttleworth mentioned fitts' law. Firefox tried to use one close button for all tabs first, one close button per tab later, so people found easy to click lots of close buttons scattered in the screen, so people will find easy to click only one close button that is not at the edge of the screen. Dash was removed from the corner and placed in the launcher, because it's an app. I agree, so it will remain in the launcher, but I want the launcher to go all the way up to the top, cutting width from the top bar. So I criticize close-in-the-corner to create dash-in-the-corner to realign the window rectangles. I worked on this global menu for six hours with only one meal break to give you this final comment! In maximized windows, if you hover " - ", the menus replace " - ", so you can click a menu and so you can't drag-and-drop the window, because there's no space left in the screen to move the window. In non-maximized windows, when you click " - ", the window is highlighted (with outter line in strong yellow and inner content in light yellow, this is like compiz, when you're dragging-and- dropping windows), so you can hold the click down to drag-and-drop the window. [Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens
If I could create an app that changed the global menu behavior and appearance, I would. If I could put the app in Ubuntu Software Center, I would. Firefox lets programmers change all of Firefox's behavior and appearance. Firefox plays with the imagination of programmers, invites work from programmers, makes the Firefox platform cooler. Just like that, Unity should let programmers change all of Unity's behavior and appearance too. Unity should play with the imagination of programmers, invite work from programmers and make the Unity platform cooler. Do you agree with me? FIrefox uses XML DOM with insertBefore, removeChild, setAttribute and CreateElement to position, remove, edit and add anything. I want XML DOM without Javascript if possible, because Javascript is for the web, for the browser and Unity is for the desktop, for the operating system. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682788 Title: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/682788/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Your patch was near the LIM button, so you have 80% of the code for the LIM button already done. We weren't expecting you to have that, so we said that the LIM button won't be in 12.04. Keep the global menu bug report heat in mind. Keep the end of april which is the precise pangolin release date in mind. Please, implement the LIM button ASAP!" ** Attachment added: "an ellipse makes the click area bigger" https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/931245/+attachment/2935663/+files/ellipse.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/931245 Title: Finish the implementation of the locally integrated menubars To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/931245/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens
We're 13 days away from Ubuntu April, 2012. Here, greeks and trojans argued a lot. Some want global menu for maximized windows only, others want app buttons instead of menu bars. I don't think the Ubuntu team be able to please greeks and trojans. [Bug 873541] Re: misaligned close, minimize and maximize
While Canonical would still like to tweak the user experience further, most such changes will be put on hold so that this Long Term Support release can focus on "polish, performance, and predictability," he added. - http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/242237/as_ubuntu_linux_turns_7_precise_pangolin_planning_begins.html Canonical said so: polish!
