Thanks for syncing. It solved a HUGE problem with containers not
stopping (see comments on LP #249137).

On the other hand, all sound hardware stopped working for me (all
modules say:  "disagrees about version of symbol struct_module"). See
dmesg attachment. Worked fine before, still works fine with -20.

Thanks for the clarification Daniel. Is there any way we're able to
help?

My audio controller [1] consumes a lot of CPU too, if glitch-free usage
is disabled. In fact the whole system is nearly unusable when playing
sound or video (up to 60% CPU usage for pulse alone).

Testing jaunty, I'm experiencing a quite similar problem which might be
related:

When EXA was enabled by default, everything was fine (and even faster
than intrepid). At some point of time (unfortunately I don't know which
update caused it), flash performance and general responsivity got much
worse. Since then, I'm also experiencing "blackouts", where xorg just
seem to put my monitor to standby. I'm able to switch back by changing
to a terminal console.

I tried AccelDFS with minimal (maybe none) effect.

I know this is not a very constructive comment, I'm just out of ideas on
how to debug this problem.

Fortunately I don't have to make the decision, but some of you will. In
fact, all options (other than Mozilla removing that restriction) have
flaws. So, who will decide and when will a decision be made?

Personally, I don't like the idea of presenting a EULA to any of our users in 
the default installation.
So why don't we switch to "abrowser" (1) in the default install and add 
"firefox-3.0-branding" to ubuntu-restricted-extras?

(1) BTW: I'd love to see it called "Web Browser" instead of "A Web
Browser" in the Gnome menu and I think the "Mozilla Firefox" text at the
title bar should be changed also.

I experienced the same problem a few weeks before. With every reboot my
soundcards (2xpci) changed position randomly.

As proposed also in Bug #8107, I  edited /etc/modutils/alsa-base and
changed my second soundcard to

options snd- index=-2 # Make sure it isn't the first card.

If that does solve your problem to, I recommend marking this bug as a
duplicate to #8107.

Might be connected: I'm able to select a java jre at openoffice
preferences, but when calling the dialog again, all changes are gone.
Additional to that, openoffice detects the installed icetea jre, but not

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

1) Install a new (and unmodified) version of Ubuntu 7.10 and do a full update 
(it's a german installation, if that matters)
2) Import a few cd's using Sound Juicers extraction feature
3) Start Rhythmbox and set it to monitor your music directory

Rhythmbox now failes on half of the files. "rhythmbox -d" says (e.g.):

This seems to be a problem with the grafic driver / hardware detection.

You should be able to move the "where are you" and any other window by
pressing "Alt" and the left mouse button at the same time.

To allow us to change this behavior, please assist and provide the
following information:

open a terminal, and provide the output of:
1) lspci | grep VGA
2) sudo cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver

Did you try a "normal" installation or a installation within a virtual
machine (VMWare, Virtual PC, etc.)?

I experienced the same problem a few weeks before.

Please open a terminal and run:

1) "sudo updatedb" (this will update the database for "locate")
2) run "locate  vmware"
3) run "locate VMware"
4) delete all files mentioning vmware or VMware (you may exclude directories 
containing vmware machines)
5) install vmware server

As this is a bug within vmware-server (which is unsupported by ubuntu) I
decided to reject the bug report. Nevertheless, it would be nice to
report this bug to the vmware support.

I'm unaware of any bug causing dataloss on a full disk. To be honest: I
filled up my disk a few times without loosing data.

You're settings are stored in your home folder in various hidden
directories* (.gconf, .evolution, .mozilla, etc. pp.)

So, is it possible you removed unnessesary files in your home directory
and did also delete the hidden files by accident? So for example, did
your run "rm /home//*"?
