[Bug 1841244] Re: package bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: installed bcmwl-kernel-source package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit statu

2019-10-18 Thread John Belton
I upgraded from Ubuntu 19.04 to Ubuntu 19.10 and the Wi-Fi card is not being
detected, it was working before and still works on the Dual Booted partition
with Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS. I need Wi-Fi as I can't easily access Ethernet.
I hope you can help.

[Bug 827934] Re: colord crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

2013-12-30 Thread John Belton
I have had this happen twice when booting Ubuntu 12.04.3 and though I have an
HP USB printer it wasn't connected at the time.
This isn't the first problem since I upgraded to 12.04.3, it also seems to
block access to UbuntuOne (this doesn't affect the two other machines with the
same login one also running Ubuntu 12.04.3 and the other currently running
Ubuntu 14.04 Alpha1).

[Bug 1240198] Re: wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop, after upgrade to saucy

2014-05-25 Thread John Belton
I thought it had but the problem recurred a couple of days later, in
fact it reverted to the US keyboard layout this morning but switched to
the UK keyboard layout (as indicated by the icons) after clicking it. I
assume it would be the same what ever keyboard layout was set in the
Languages menu.

[Bug 1311511] Re: After upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS can't login to GUI

2014-05-21 Thread John Belton
I have been using the Laptop that I reinstalled the 12.04.3 LTS and then did a
live upgrade to 14.04 via the termial and have not had a recurrence of the
lock-out state since. I have had one irritation that it sometimes starts with
the English (US) keyboard layout instead of the English (UK) that it indicates
is selected, this doesn't happen every time and is just an irritation and fixed
by clicking the En1 English (UK) icon (the icon on the panel doesn't change and
shows En1 every time at boot).
I put the lock-out state problem as a possible corruption of the USB I had used
to do the install originally though the Desktop I upgraded first with the same
USB hasn't shown either problem.

2014-09-01 Thread John Belton
I have the same problem with the Daily Build of Ubuntu 14.10 downloaded
on 31st August 2014, I tried the TAB then "live" and it booted. I
understand this is something that seems to crop up from time to time and
is related to the compiler of the build, could it be accessing an old
"boot-enabler" that only worked on some hardware.

[Bug 1240198] Re: [SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2015-01-07 Thread John Belton
It has reappeared again today, I checked and the system settings "advised me"
that it was not completely installed which is very odd since I always do the
install whenever I update an install (back in April last year) and running it
downloaded one dictionary but reinstalled several that were not downloaded but
must have been on the system. This didn't change the keyboard layout until I
selected it from the option on the top bar. I'm not sure why the language
selection should have been affected though I didn't reboot after resetting my
layout choice.
I don't know if this behaviour is related but seems one hell of a coincidence!

[Bug 1240198] Re: [SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2015-01-04 Thread John Belton
This problem has reappeared yesterday after quite a time but as there were no
new updates I can not think of a possible cause for it to reappear. There was
an update to the anacron software and I wonder if that update could have
"restored" the default installation keyboard layout somehow. Clicking on my
selected keyboard layout seems to have restored my preferred layout but I
noticed it was reset to US keyboard layout after switching on and logging in
this morning.
I haven't had any problems with the numlock LED so far.

[Bug 1311511] Re: After upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 can't login to GUI

2014-05-01 Thread John Belton
I had the same problem with my Dell Vostro 1510 laptop (dual booted with
Widows Vista at the moment). It didn't affect the upgrade on my Dell
Optiplex GX520 where it has been working fine. I used a USB download to
do the original upgrades on both and I was a bit stunned when the laptop
failed to log in the next day. I should add I upgraded the desktop
first.

I needed to use the laptop so I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04.3 from the disk
I had and carried on using that for a few days but last Monday I decided
to try upgrading again, this time doing it on-line with the terminal
mode command line "update-manager -d" which offered the upgrade. (Just
using the Software Updater doesn't offer the upgrade option from 12.04
until 14.04.1 is released.) It worked and the laoptop has been in use
daily since without a recurance of the problem. I had though the USB may
somehow been corrupted but I'm not so sure now.

I will keep using this and monitoring things to see if there is anything
I can add.

[Bug 1240198] Re: Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2014-08-14 Thread John Belton
I've just checked my 32bit Ubuntu 14.10 virtual machine on my Laptop (Dell
Vostro 1510 running Ubuntu 14.04.1 and VirtualBox) and have found the correct
keyboard layout UK English is selected. Not the US English that was causing a
problem initially when 14.04 was installed. After the correction around #34 in
the list above it hasn't recured on this machine and the problem never occured
on the Dell Optiplex Desktop running the same software. I can only think there
may be some problems with some keyboard controller hardware as it doesn't seem
to affect all systems. I tried two different USB keyboards on the Desktop, the
Dell one for the machine and a Packard-Bell one but both seem to work
correctly, selecting the UK English layout as a first preference but without
dismatling the keyboards I can't see if the same interface chip-set is used on
both keyboards.
I rechecked the 14.10 Alpha2 again after rebooting following this mornings
updates and the UK English keyboard layout was still correctly selected.

[Bug 1240198] Re: Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2014-10-10 Thread John Belton
This problem has retuned YET AGAIN, why when it has been OK for some months has
it re-appeared, is someone updating something to suit some hardware that
doesn't apply to others, it has affected my Laptop but not so far the Desktop,
both running Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS at the same current update state?
I have Ubuntu 14.10 Beta dualbooting on my Laptop and so far the keyboard seems
to have remained as Engilsh (UK) and not changed sinse it was installed and I
configured it for my normal keyboard use. Is that going to keep changing when
that is fially released in a few days time?

[Bug 1240198] Re: Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2014-10-10 Thread John Belton
Jost to confirm this has happened again openning Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS but
corrected it's self when I rebooted this Laptop and opened the Ubuntu 14.10
Beta, reverting again to the LTS OS partition it was the English (UK) keyboard
correctly indicated.
The keyboard it opens with again seems to be a random selection thing again,
could it be somehow related to the Grub bootloader prior to the Operating
System selection some how setting the keyboard layout that it opens the OS in
that isn't overridden when the OS starts?

[Bug 1240198] Re: Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2014-07-22 Thread John Belton
I tried the proposed fix a while back and the problem hasn't returned on my
system, I had assumed the fix had been pushed through. As for the Gnome 3 set
up, I was using the Unity version on bot my Desktop and my Laptop but the
problem only affected the Laptop, so maybe it is a combination of the hardware
as well as the software. The Laptop is a Dell Vostro 1510 with some extra ram
(4GiB) and a 250GiB harddrive. Maybe the fix doesnt work for all hardware as it
seems to be something that resets the defaults in some circumstances.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-11-17 Thread John Belton
I'm not sure what to do but was under the impression it had been reported as a
Kernel bug, perhaps I misread a comment suggesting it should be reported?
I do feel it is something that needs investigation as it may be related to some
other things that don't seem to be seen now, (my laptop has a firewire port
which used to be listed as "not used" as I haven't got anything that used it
but it isn't in the current list of devices/drivers).
I will report it if you can tell me what is needed and who I should contact.

Looking at the data presented above it seems to have been from a system running
the 64 bit version, for the record I have the same problem with the 32 bit
Ubuntu 11.10 on a Dell Vostro 1510. I don't think it should matter as the data
in/out to an SD card is serial but I thought it may be worth mentioning.

[Bug 1062007] Re: evolution-calendar-factory crashed with SIGSEGV in g_hash_table_lookup_node()

2012-10-09 Thread John Belton
I have had this report on two Ubuntu 12.10 Beta2 installations, ( both under
Wubi installs ) but in neither case could I get the access to add comments when
reporting. It occured when running Software Updater, it appeared to update
correctly but failed to reboot when it indicated, stalling both machines with
the Ubuntu logo and no access from the keyboard as if the machines froze before
the reboot signal was sent to the hardware. This happened on a Dell laptop
running a Wubi installed version in Windows Vista and on a Dell Desktop running
a Wubi installed version in Windows XP.
I can only go by the date info as this was confirmed in an email and was the
only fail reported by me this week as I couldn't access the report when it was
sent.
I also note in those installations the Launchpad access keeps offering to
install some "easy access" software but does nothing when I click on the button.

[Bug 892906] Re: SD Card reader not working

2012-09-12 Thread John Belton
I'm now running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with the 3.2.0-31 Kernel on my Dell Vostro
1510 and the SD card reader is working normally (I've just checked with the
card from my camera) and it has worked OK since the change from Kernel 3.0.0,
it didn't work after the change to that Kernel (though I could use an external
USB adapter).
There may be a later version of the 3.0.0 Kernel it worked with but I've not
had problems since the 3.2.0 Kernel was introduced, I have not yet checked it
with the Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha or Beta1 that uses 3.5.0 Kernel (I believe the
release next month is intending to use 3.6.0 Kernel).
It may be worth noting the current Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS release uses the 3.2.0
Kernel on install and that may cure the problem.

[Bug 916509] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in nux::NTextureData::GetSurface()

2012-01-26 Thread John Belton
In my case it was after the upgrade from 11.10 on reboot in a Wubi install.
The system has 2GiB RAM and 20GiB virtual drive. The rest of the install seems
OK.

[Bug 872711] Re: Kernel does not report some USB printers correctly, making them not being detected by CUPS

2011-11-22 Thread John Belton
Thanks for getting back to my problem, after doing all the updates yesterday I
tried again with the Lexmark X2650 on my 64 bit Ubuntu 11.10 but it still seems
to come up with the same install routine and flags up with the
"cups-invalid-filter" (or words to that effect I'm not in front of the Desktop
at the moment) and the installed icon has the red exclamation mark as before.
I've checked the kernel is 3.0.0.13-22 but I am not sure about the cups version
(there have been many updates but I don't remember the current status of that.
The supplied Lexmark driver software still fails to install stopping at the
"connect USB" stage, even if the printer auto-install routine has finished in
the above state. It still asks for the USB to be connected after the connection
is made.
I now have an HP Jetdesk 1050A printer which works with my laptop but would
still like to resolve the problem with the Lexmark printer/scanner.

[Bug 872711] Re: Kernel does not report some USB printers correctly, making them not being detected by CUPS

2011-11-22 Thread John Belton
Re my message #79 above I got the message wrong that is shown it is
"cups-insecure-filter" I confirmed it when I got access to the Desktop and
printer earlier. I'm not sure if this implies the driver is not safe to use on
a network or something but I read elsewhere on another "help" site that it may
just be permissions that have to be changed though I couldn't find any changes
that worked.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2012-01-04 Thread John Belton
This situation doesn't seem to have changed, even though there has been another
release of the Kernel, now 3.0.0-15.25, I'm not sure exactly what this change
was supposed to cover but "built in" SD Card readers don't seem to be consided
as "standard". Does this also apply to "built in web-cams and microphones" and
the like? If it is the case I can see a lot of people moving to OSX or even
Windows.

[Bug 872711] Re: Kernel does not report some USB printers correctly, making them not being detected by CUPS

2011-12-18 Thread John Belton
Just to update people I have set up a Wubi install in the Windows partition on
my desktop and upgraded it to 12.04 Alpha, connecting the Lexmark X2650 printer
it doesn't "snatch" and try (and fail) to install it automaticaly and trying
manually it stops indicating "no driver available".
I tried installing the Lexmark supplied driver but that is only 32bit and the
Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha is 64bit.
Does anyone know a solution to run 32bit drivers in a 64bit installation?
I would like to try it if it shows the problem is really cured.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-12-18 Thread John Belton
In my frustration I purchased a USB Card Reader and that permits me to read the
SD cards (and others) via a USB port, so the problem must be not seeing or
identifying the hardware but I'm not sure how to confirm this. I have tried
looking at some settings in the terminal but am not sure where to look let
alone what to change. This might help those who do know where to look.

[Bug 916356] Re: unity-applications-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in dee_sequence_model_free_row()

2012-03-25 Thread John Belton
It looks like this has returned with vengance, updating this morning asked for
a reboot and after entering password the display clears then seems to freeze,
no interface at all, I can open the terminal via CTRL+ALT+F1 but I can't see
where to go to get the interface running. I'm not sure how to report the system
status from there and am using my normal 11.10 system to report this, it may
have been reported under another bug but without reading all those since
Thursday (the last date updated the failed system) so any advice will be
investigated. Thanks

[Bug 930499] Re: unity-applications-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2012-03-07 Thread John Belton
After updating today I tried several icons on the Dash selection and it worked
the first time after rebooting but failed to respond to any second or third
selection. It also failed to open any application whith it's name typed in full
after the first attempt to run another application. I hope this can guide
someone where to look for this problem. It has affected both my Wubi installs
on my Desktop and Laptop.

2012-02-20 Thread John Belton
I had a problem flag up when I opened an existing file, it opened OK but the
error flag opened on top of it. This happened before when using the dash, if I
go to the file through the home folder and sub folders the flag doesn't seem to
appear.
It appears mre irritating than serious.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-11-03 Thread John Belton
I have tried the restart with and without the SD card plugged in, it still
doesn't see it in either case.
this version of Ubuntu is getting worse, the Launcher doesn't indicate open
files or programs unless they are new and the screen switching locks up
preventing a full-screen browser or other program from being closed. I am
seriously thinking of going back to Ubuntu 11.04 until it is sorted out.

[Bug 872711] Re: Kernel does not report some USB printers correctly, making them not being detected by CUPS

2011-11-27 Thread John Belton
Just to let you know I've tried again to get the desktop to work with the
Lexmark printer but the result is the same. I am sure the latest "cups" and
other updates have all been installed for Ubuntu 11.10 64 (including the Kernel
to 3.0.0-14-generic(x86-64) the 32bit version doesn't seem to be available for
my laptop). I have the Ubuntu 12.04 pre-Alpha in VirtualBox but I'm not sure if
the printer would work correctly through VirtualBox without add-ons as I have
never had to use it that way.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-11-27 Thread John Belton
I have tried looking at the kernel.org site but though it seems to be active
(the last date quoted seems to be 25 Nov 2011) but I can't see any search
facility and the numbers may be "latest" releases not that used by Ubuntu. Any
help would be nice, copying photo files from the SD card in Windows to then
have to use a USB stick to get them into Ubuntu for my uses is annoying (not
least being my desire to remove Windows Vista completely from the laptop).

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-10-28 Thread John Belton
I trued that early on but it still doesn't see the SD card so can't "just use
it", it doesn't show as mounted or otherwise when looking with the command line
(the card has a "disk name" added in this case and is identified as such in
Windows Vista on the same machine).
I don't know what machine you are using is or if it is an external USB plug-in
adapter that may work by fooling the system into seeing it as a USB card. I
don't have an adapter to try so I don't know if that works.
I'm not sure it's the same bug as the card worked fine in 11.04, I used it for
transferring files when studying with the OU on a course that has Windows only
software without problems.

[Bug 872093] Re: SD Card not being recognized

2011-11-09 Thread John Belton
I have used the fact that the SD card I have works in Windows to re-format it
(as the default DOS 32 format) and reloaded some files onto it to ensure the
card wasn't corrupted. It works OK in Windows Vista but still isn't recognized
(or even detected) in Ubuntu 11.10. I can only conclude the upgrade of the
kernel to 3.0.0.12 misses these devices.

[Bug 872711] Re: Kernel does not report some USB printers correctly, making them not being detected by CUPS

2011-11-14 Thread John Belton
I have tried again with the install of my Lexmark X2650 printer/scanner on both
my Dell Vostro 1510 laptop running Ubuntu 11.10 32bit and my Dell Optiplex 510
running Ubuntu 11.10 64bit with the same result, the printer is detected as a
USB printer and identified as a "Lexmark 2600 series" but refuses to print
anything, with a warning flag, the Icon is also marked up immediately after the
printer is detected, the detection process overriding the printer driver
installation software supplied by Lexmark. The printer worked fine with Ubuntu
11.04 (with the earlier Kernel). It doesn't seem to be a problem with the HP
printer/scanner I now have but I am concerned about future upgrades doing a
"Windows" making older hardware obsolete or the "Apple" approach of "must be
approved by us".
It is a bit irritating as both my computers have the 3.0.0.13 Kernel and though
I have looked at the Ubuntu 12.04 pre-alpha version with the newer 3.1.0 Kernel
in VirtualBox I don't know if it could print as the VirtualBox imposes some
limitations anyway.
I have seen many cups updates as well as at least one Kernel upgrade since I
moved to 11.10 but the problem still persists.
