[Bug 293308] Re: package clamav-base None failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-11-04 Thread JC
It seems this was caused my me having libclamav5 installed after I tried
to install clamav from source.

I've since tried this again (removing libclamav5 first), then installing
clamav via "aptitude" with no issues.

2008-10-26 Thread JC
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Release:8.10

Guification popups usually include details of contacts that have signed-

text is not present.
This problem does not occur under the other themes.

[Bug 231789] [NEW] desk top workspace change screen remains on after switching from one workspace to another.

2008-05-18 Thread JC
Public bug reported:

The workspace transition screen remains on after switching from one desktop to
another. This usually comes up only briefly then disappears. No longer, it
comes up the first time you change and never goes away. You can't move it
either.
This is in Ubuntu 8.04 Please forgive me, I am relatively new to Linux but I
did not have this issue with Gutsy Gibbon.

[Bug 343949] [NEW] options menu doesn't work

2009-03-16 Thread jc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I am using Ubuntu to make this report for a bug in Windows XP with all
the updates and current version of Firefox.

The menu item under Tools "Options" causes Firefox to crash and not respond.
All other tabs and menu items work ok.
I have even re-imaged and still have the same problem. And I have uninstalled
and reinstalled to no avail

Hope this finds a clue.

 Thanks for the reply
Ubuntu works great in all respects.
I depend almost entirely on it for an OS.
Windows is just a crossword puzzle for the most part.

[Bug 279102] Re: Unreliable network connection with B44 driver

2009-08-09 Thread JC
Jean-Louis Dupond can you please give us the step by step instructions
on how to fix this problem. I am a newbie and desperately need help.
What is the file name... I am assuming it is the b44.ko? How do we
modify the file if it is a compile .ko file?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

[Bug 399546] [NEW] Ubuntu does not retain folder share settings.

2009-07-14 Thread JC
Public bug reported:

there are only 2 accounts I use my ubuntu 9.04, Root to perform my admin
duties and my other account "JC".

Now when I have went over much literature getting to try and work but
this seems to be a bug to me.. this is the issue;

In the /home folder i have one folder which is my 'jc' folder.

under my 'jc' folder i have attempted to 'share' my Documents folder and
my Videos/Pictures/Music folders by right clicking on the folder,
selecting sharing options, then selecting and checking off "share this
folder" and 'allow other people to write to this folder' and 'Guest
access (for people without a user account).

I have also edited the /etc/samba/smb.conf as has been discussed on the
ubuntu forums only changing in the file the workgroup to the workgroup i
run called "The_Resistance".

Now this is the bug.. after i set these settings, I reboot to ensure
they are saved.. i come back into ubuntu desktop, go look at the folders
I just shared to check their share settings and the "allow other people
to write in this folder" is now NOT checked on any of the folders i
shared.

>From an XP computer I can't view folders that have files in them,
however, i can enter folders that are empty. if thru XP i enter a
folder that has files in on the ubuntu side, network neighbourhood in xp
gives me the hourglass and then says an error has occured and the volume
is no longer available.

>From the ubuntu side, when I view files on the XP SP2 computer .. i can
view the files but can't copy them or anythning.. I can just view the
files in the directory.

So basically I am unable to copy files back and forth between the two
somewhat networked machines. I am able to view only empty folders in XP
to Ubuntu and in Ubuntu to XP I can only see what's in the XP folders
but nto copy them or view them when they are double clcked. The ubuntu
system just stays stagnant. then I eventually have to close the window.

you can email me at filivs_prodi...@rogers.com. Please fix this, I
love this ubuntu.. i really do.. and your MO and not being a evil
microsoft type company and your philosophy. Please tell me how to fix
this if it isn't a bug and just a matter of settings between the the XP
machine and the Ubuntu Machine.. TIA

Regards,

Filippo

[Bug 415666] [NEW] Cannot browse network - 9.04

2009-08-18 Thread JC
Public bug reported:

I am running Kernel 2.6.28-15-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 29 08:53:35 UTC
2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux.
After I received an update to the kernel above, a reboot was required.
Once I rebooted, I am no longer able to browse my network. I also cannot
access my samba shares that are on the ubuntu machine. Samba is running fine.
I re-installed network manager, but that did not fix the problem.

Also, I have a shortcut on my desktop that points to a subfolder in my
home directory. When I first logon the shortcut/link is there, when I
click on on Places --> Network a window popup for a split second and
goes away, my shortcut on my desktop disappears.

Tailing the log while I click on Places --> Network, I get the following error:

[Bug 102991] Re: noisy audio decode error

2007-05-03 Thread JC
I had the same issue with VLC.

I fixed it by...

sudo apt-get remove vlc vlc-nox (obviously totem would go here)

Then it told me of the libraries no longer in use...

libdc1394-13 libwxgtk2.6-0 libpostproc0d libdvbpsi4 libavformat0d libxosd2
  libvlc0 libwxbase2.6-0 libgsm1 libdvdnav4 libiso9660-4 libkadm55
  libavcodec0d libmodplug0c2 libtar libvcdinfo0 libmpcdec3 libsdl-image1.2

I just typed sudo apt-get remove "And pasted the info above"

The paste had a line break so it kicked i off early BUT I just ran sudo
apt-get install vlc after that and it grabbed the libs and now I have no
more static.

Good luck.

[Bug 79221] python-gpod doesn't provide python bindings

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-gpod

Using feisty and python-gpod 0.4. (Apologies if i've entered this in

python-gpod deliberately doesn't provide python gpod bindings. Why have
a package that doesn't do anything apart from install examples that
don't work!

The changelog cites python-eyed3 needs promoting first... Is python-
eyed3 due to be promoted? If not, can't this package be placed in
universe with python-eyed3.. or perhaps a secondary package that
"provides" python-gpod?

RE: [Bug 49119] Re: ttyd error when make

2007-01-15 Thread JC
Hi,

I'm sorry but I sent my post more than 4 month ago. I don't remember exactly
what I wrote and, since, I have changed of company.

I tryed to use ttyd to connect a printer to my linux via ethernet to serial
device.
My thirst problem was the Telnet protocol disturb the connection. Telnet
strings are sent directly to the printer.

How can I remove telnet controls ?

The second was that the flux controls don't work when I send a big
document.

What can I use to connect a serial printer to linux server via ethernet
connection ?

Thank you,

python-elementree only seems to support python 2.4, so i am running
Conduit forecefully under python 2.4. Is there a reason that Element
Tree isn't available under the default python interpreter?

The problems are compounded by the fact that python-gpod bindings which
it also uses seem to be the other way around, "import gpod" only works
under python 2.5!

[Bug 81890] Re: python-elementree doesn't seem to support python2.5?

2007-01-27 Thread Jc
Running under 2.5, i get this:-

Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "/home/john/Projects/conduit/conduit/MainWindow.py", line 17, in

However, under 2.4, all is well. Does ElementTree need to be used a
certain way to make it work under 2.4 and 2.5?

2007-01-31 Thread Jc
I did the following to get it working on my machine (just rebuilt
package on feisty, which makes me think that this would be trivial for
it to be fixed?)

sudo apt-get build-dep python-pygoocanvas
apt-get source python-pygoocanvas
cd pygoocanvas-0.4.1/
fakeroot debian/rules binary
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i python-pygoocanvas_0.4.1-1_i386.deb

The only problem I have is that even though the versions seem to be the
same, it prefers the version in the repo. I guess I have to bump the
version number, but I wouldn't know where to begin.

[Bug 92296] Re: Low quality of text rendering in Evince

2010-01-31 Thread Jc
Hello everybody,

I posted some time ago a font redering problem with evince/poppler, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/419715. It turns
out that all the examples in the present post are displayed properly for
me, yet the pdf in the bug report mentioned is still hardly readable. It
happens very frequently to me, and I need to switch to xpdf, which works
fine. For instance, I took a random article today just to check, and the
first I tried did not work properly, see
http://projecteuclid.org/DPubS/Repository/1.0/Disseminate?view=body&id=pdf_1&handle=euclid.cmp/1158328654.

[Bug 419715] Re: blurry characters, not with xpdf

2010-02-28 Thread Jc
In my opinion, this bug should be raised (at least) to a "Medium"
priority. As I pointed out in another bug report
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/92296), this
rendering problem is very frequent. At least within the little community
of mathematicians, whose main interest in computers is to open pdf's and
send e-mails, I believe that it represents a very serious drawback when
experiencing the Ubuntu distribution. Of course one may use xpdf
instead, but this requires some acquaintance with the "free world"...

[Bug 538648] Re: [Intel GM45] Irregular sync flashes on 8086:2a42 (Needs i915.powersave quirk)

2010-05-17 Thread JC
Hello,

I also have this weird bug in my Sony Vaio VGN-FJ1S with an Intel 915
VGA. Strangely this only started yesterday I guess (!)

Well more important: I found a workaround for this: "Add to Panel..." >
"CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor" and then I set it to work at 1.33 GHz
(the max. for me it's 1.73 GHz) and it's ok, no more screen
dim/flickering !

Nevertheless I hope this will be fixed soon.

Cheers,
JC

2010-05-20 Thread JC

I hadn't the time to try that kernel of yours but latter maybe this
weekend I'll try then.

I have another *maybe interesting* fact to report: I installed KDE in
this Ubuntu 10.04 and since then I have no screen glitches/flickering!
Nothing at all. Even in Gnome. Maybe this problem/bug is related to the
gnome-power-manager or something?

Notice I'm running '2.6.32-22-generic' kernel and this Ubuntu 10.04 was
a fresh install. I have an Intel 915GM Chipset in this Sony laptop and
X.Org X Server 1.7.6.

well if the problem is the same (wrong edid detection)

[Bug 419715] [NEW] blurry characters, not with xpdf

2009-08-26 Thread Jc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Good morning,

It is the first time I submit a bug report, or ever have the feeling
that I am "speaking to the Ubuntu community", so first of all, thank you
all for your work ! I have been using Ubuntu for quite some time now,
and have a lot of pleasure in doing so.

So the problem is that for some pdf's, the rendering of Evince is poor.
Characters appear blurry at all scales, and such a thing does not happen when
viewed with xpdf. Attached is a screenshot of the views given by evince and
xpdf of the following pdf :
http://www.projecteuclid.org/DPubS/Repository/1.0/Disseminate?handle=euclid.aoms/1177700291&view=body&content-type=pdf_1
(see the link "PDF file" at the bottom of the page).

I have a fresh install of Jaunty (9.04) on an HP Pavilion laptop. I have
already experienced this problem on an earlier version of Ubuntu, and on
a Dell Inspiron laptop. My current version of Evince is 2.26.1, with
poppler 0.10.5 (cairo).

Most documents work just fine, but this problem is not unique to the pdf
I mention here.

Looking for some earlier reference about this problem, I found this one :

The guy emphasizes that Evince is slow. I also had the feeling that when
characters were blurry, Evince was notably slowier than usually, or as
compared to xpdf on the same document (non blurry, fast).

Ok, I think I gave you all the information I had ! Thanks again.

[Bug 1844997] [NEW] coloring of latex code is broken

2019-09-23 Thread Jc
Public bug reported:

The coloring of latex code can be broken by simple expressions such as
the one attached. This is with gedit 3.28.1, the latex plugin is 3.20.0,

worked just fine on an older machine.

[Bug 1744807] Re: 17.10.1 desktop install from usb key fails

2018-01-22 Thread jc
For what it's worth I retried the exact same installation options/setup
as this bug report, but with the network cable disconnected. It worked
flawlessly.

After installation I connected the network cable, booted the machine,
then performed an apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade. Again, no
errors and it survived a reboot.

odd. is the 17.10.1 desktop installer downloading something if it has a
network connection, even if the user doesn't check the box to download
updates during install? Seems like the logical cause given the
circumstances I've experienced here. If you want logs from my machine
that i installed successfully (with no network connection during install
phase) let me know what commands/files you'd like output from.

of the bug.

Status in "samba" package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
there are only 2 accounts I use my ubuntu 9.04, Root to perform my admin
duties and my other account "JC".

Now when I have went over much literature getting to try and work but this
seems to be a bug to me.. this is the issue;

In the /home folder i have one folder which is my 'jc' folder.

under my 'jc' folder i have attempted to 'share' my Documents folder and my
Videos/Pictures/Music folders by right clicking on the folder, selecting
sharing options, then selecting and checking off "share this folder" and
'allow other people to write to this folder' and 'Guest access (for people
without a user account).

I have also edited the /etc/samba/smb.conf as has been discussed on the
ubuntu forums only changing in the file the workgroup to the workgroup i run
called "The_Resistance".

Now this is the bug.. after i set these settings, I reboot to ensure they
are saved.. i come back into ubuntu desktop, go look at the folders I just
shared to check their share settings and the "allow other people to write in
this folder" is now NOT checked on any of the folders i shared.

>From an XP computer I can't view folders that have files in them, however,
i can enter folders that are empty. if thru XP i enter a folder that has
files in on the ubuntu side, network neighbourhood in xp gives me the
hourglass and then says an error has occured and the volume is no longer
available.

>From the ubuntu side, when I view files on the XP SP2 computer .. i can
view the files but can't copy them or anythning.. I can just view the files
in the directory.

So basically I am unable to copy files back and forth between the two
somewhat networked machines. I am able to view only empty folders in XP to
Ubuntu and in Ubuntu to XP I can only see what's in the XP folders but nto
copy them or view them when they are double clcked. The ubuntu system just
stays stagnant. then I eventually have to close the window.

you can email me at filivs_prodi...@rogers.com. Please fix this, I love
this ubuntu.. i really do.. and your MO and not being a evil microsoft type
company and your philosophy. Please tell me how to fix this if it isn't a
bug and just a matter of settings between the the XP machine and the Ubuntu
Machine.. TIA

Regards,

Filippo

[Bug 991666] Re: VPN Connects Successfully & Then Shortly Thereafter Fails

2014-07-10 Thread JC
Hi everybody,

I have the exact same symptoms on 14.04 with a PPTP VPN.

I have a very strong feeling this is related to custom routes. I can initiate
the VPN and have it working (had it up for at least 15min without problems),
but as soon as I add a custom route on the command line the connection drops
after a couple of seconds. Also, when entered in the VPN/Settings gui, the
connection drops shortly (seconds) after intiation.
Is there some conflicting process which stumbles over the custom route? Perhaps
dhclient or pptp itself?

So, for now, VPN is unusable to me as I need a custom route. Bummer.

[Bug 1412520] Re: eog crashed with SIGABRT in __assert_fail_base()

2015-05-29 Thread JC
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1303855 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1303855

I believe to be affected by this bug as well but it is duplicated to a private
bug. How can I be notified of the status / work around?
Here's what I get when running eog on a specific image. It is consistently
reproducible.

$ eog /media/vm/SharedFolder/DSC_0036_LR.jpg
eog: /build/buildd/cairo-1.13.0~20140204/src/cairo-xlib-surface-shm.c:619:
_cairo_xlib_shm_pool_create: Assertion `*ptr != ((void *)0)' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)

Description:Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
Gnome Image Viewer v3.10.2

Opening of the same image with gimp works fine.

Yeah, this is happening on mainline as well. I posted this bug

which I think might well be related to this hibernate problem.

[Bug 1322232] Re: wrong margins on HP photosmart 5520 printer

2014-10-11 Thread jc
I have a similar problem: The printer is an HP Officejet Pro L7600,
which used to work fine on an earlier Ubuntu. But when I upgraded to
the latest xubuntu (LTE 14.04), the pages all have a blank margin about
1.3 or 1.4 cm wide, and the text in that area (title, page number, date,
etc.) in blank. The titles at the top typically have the bottom of
descenders in letters like 'p', 'q', and 'y', showing that the text was
"placed" correctly in PDF/PS, but the top parts of the letters are
erased by something.

I've poked around in all the config stuff I can find, and done a bit of
googling, and found comments about the problem on several forums, but as
here, I've found no answers. The fact that the printer printed in the
margin area (up to about 2 cm from each edge) proves that it's not the
printer's fault.

Anyone have a clue for how to fix it?
