[Bug 154839] Re: in system monitor's preferences the refresh rate value is not saved when changed by key
Hi Pedro This is still an issue. I can confirm with an up-to-date version of Hardy. To reproduce: - Open the setting dialog - Click once in the refresh interval edit box (to select the field making it editable) - Enter any number different than the current - Click Close immediately, without clicking anywhere else - Open the settings dialog again and verify that the value did not change Again, this is probably a general interface bug in whatever "toolkit" gnome-system-monitor uses to handle its GUI. Haha, great :). Your screenshot seems even more messed up than mine :o. [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf
While lewmur IMHO is a big aggressive in his opinion, I have to agree with him. This is a big usability issue for nvidia users (~25%). I completely agree with Savvas Radevic as well. While a gksudo fix might not be the most ideal way to solve this problem, it is the only thing we have right now - and IMHO we shouldn't trash it simply because it doesn't live 100% up to the standards. It's been over a year since this bug was submitted, which means that nvidia users have been bugged by this for *at least* 3 releases. I honestly don't think it is fair to keep nvidia users trapped in this any more. [Bug 291203] Re: Desktop should show a scrollbar if full
I agree that a solution for this problem is needed. I'm not sure that a scrollbar is the best way either, but nevertheless, this *is* a problem. In my opinion, this situation is not a "corner case" too small to consider. If you allow the user to create more files on the desktop than there is room for, you need to handle the situation as well. It's a low priority problem indeed, but still a valid one. Putting icons on top of each other seems like a workaround at best. Random ideas for possible solutions: 1) Some kind of scrollbar (as mentioned) 2) Scroll arrows at the right/left side of the screen (like the Wii menu, see the arrow at the right edge of http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/wii_channels.jpg) 3) Automatic placement of a shortcut displaying the desktop in a normal nautilus window when the Desktop is full (and hiding the icons that can't fit into the desktop) ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- Desktop should show a scrollbar if full https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/291203 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 54024] Re: WIN key should be mapped to Applications menu
I agree with Duncan (and this bug/wishlist item). It would be really useful to have Windows buttons assigned to the menu. It seems to be a common annoyance that it isn't. Surely the user could always map it to something else Phantom? I can't see how a default mapping would be worse for the user. Isn't that exactly the point? :) If nvidia-settings requires superuser access, then the menu shortcut for Ubuntu should probably be prefixed with "gksu"? [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf
I fully agree! The problem is just that the user probably won't know which settings that require xorg.conf write-acess (and shouldn't need to!). Seeing that nvidia-settings doesn't use any kind of privilege escalation system, the user might get stuck with an error after changing settings. Assuming that there is consensus about such error being unacceptable, I only see 2 immediate solutions: 1) Patch nvidia-settings to use privilege escalation (Policy-Kit?) 2) Always run nvidia-settings with superuser access Personally, I'd prefer solution 1), but if that is too much work then 2) seems acceptable to me as well. 2) isn't ideal, as you point out, but still better than throwing write-access errors in my opinion. -- nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200868 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

As the duplicate also points out, the window size is automatically increased to fit every time a menu entry is clicked upon. The window should, nevertheless, not spawn as small as it does at the moment. If the calculation of the maximum needed size would take more than a second or so (some menu entries, like "OpenGL/GLX Information", seems to lag for 2-3 seconds when clicked upon), a reasonable compromise would be to spawn the window with the menu entry "X Server Information" (the first menu entry with general information) selected (actually, this should probably be done anyway! [Bug 113344] Re: [Feisty[mouseemu]Freeze of usb mouse while using keyboard
1) Indeed it should only. The problem is that the touchpad on a macbook apparently is mapped to the same thing as USB mice are on a "normal" installation. There is probably a way to check if the device is a touchpad though - which should be implemented. 2) I think it is a good thing to have it enabled by default. It should probably be tweaked a bit though. Better hear macbook users about how it works for them, though. 3) I'm not really sure when mouseemu is needed, but definitely worth asking about/looking into. Actually, the most important thing woth this delay is probably to avoid accidental touchpad clicks. Movement probably won't hurt much, but clicks can be quite annoying. I am able to reproduce this bug on a brand new HP DV5-1214eo with Ubuntu 9.04. I am able to reproduce the following: 1) A delay on ~250 ms between touchdragging and the OSD result. 2) Touchdragging up and down repeatedly causes 100% CPU usage on one of the laptop's 2 CPU cores. 3) While not as bad as on the other laptop (maybe because this one is much more powerful), the enqueued event problem is still present. This could be relevant to this kernel bug: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6208 I am currently working with Zhang Rui there to fix it for the A6km laptop. Basically, when Linux identifies itself as "Windows NT", the BIOS does some special stuff regarding USB devices, causing the Linux boot to hang if USB devices are attached (all USB devices for me though, not just memory sticks). [Bug 216788] [NEW] Holding down volume hotkeys causes CPU lag and enqueued volume events
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon Hardware: ASUS A6Km laptop Distribution: Ubuntu Hardy Beta Package hint: gnome-settings-daemon 2.22.1-0ubuntu1 When holding down any of the fn volume hotkeys (mute, volume down, volume up), the system will suffer from CPU lag (Up to ~50% usage while holding down) and enqueued volume events (which are then executed AFTER you release the key). My guess: Holding down any of the hotkeys causes the system to repeatedly send the event to the OSD, which apparently has a rather inefficient way of drawing the on-screen volume bar. If the bar is unnecessarily recalculated/redrawn x times per second, it causes enqueued events and CPU lag. Holding down a volume hotkey for ~10 seconds will cause the volume bar to flicker/refresh for an additional 5-10 seconds after you release the key. This causes the volume to rise/fall more than you wanted (because you first stopped holding down the key when the OSD showed the volume you wanted - yet several events have been enqueued in the meantime). On another Ubuntu setup with a wireless HP USB keyboard, this bug is not present. I guess the event repeat rate is different for each keyboard? xprop | grep WM_CLASS against the OSD hinted gnome-settings-daemon. ** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Holding down volume hotkeys causes CPU lag and enqueued volume events https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/216788 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 216788] Re: Holding down volume hotkeys causes CPU lag and enqueued volume events
Hi Sebastien. Thank you for looking into this. I already wrote down my version of Ubuntu and the gnome-settings-daemon package. What other version numbers do you need? I can confirm that this bug still exists on an up-to-date system as of today. I suggest that the volume change events are not cached/enqueued like they seem to be at the moment. This causes the annoying side-effect mentioned in my original post ("This causes the volume to rise/fall more than you wanted (because you first stopped holding down the key when the OSD showed the volume you wanted - yet several events have been enqueued in the meantime)"). I'm not entirely sure how the events are cached/enqueued at the moment (again, seems to depend on the keyboard used?), but while the system is working on displaying the volume graph on screen, additional events triggered by the held down key should be discarded. By doing this, the actual system volume and the OSD will be "synced" as the user would expect them to. This might be related to the fact that the OSD uses about 50% CPU (of an AMD Sempron Mobile 3100+) to draw the volume OSD while holding down a volume key. I guess that is another bug to report though? I hope that is what you wanted to know. [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
Thanks for the explanations. I did not, however, abort the installation at any point. I waited until the restricted hardware manager asked me to reboot, and rebooted when it did. I also tried doing "dpkg-reconfigure xorg-driver-fglrx" without any luck. Manually installing the *fglrx* packages didn't work either. As the system was unbootable, I was forced to "manually" remove the *fglrx* packages. For future reference, is there anything else I could have done? Is there a better recovery procedure? In any way - what am I supposed to do now? I'd rather help tracking down the bug than simply reinstalling and hoping for the best. ** Changed in: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu Karmic) Status: Invalid => New -- fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/440233 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 405148] Re: Laptop battery indicator indicates 0% charge when fully charged
I'm attaching the requested files below. I've noticed a strange development since my confirmation of this bug. After several hours with 0,0% charge displayed (even though the battery has been fully charged at all time), the charge display suddenly started rising. I'm attaching a gnome-power-manager graph showing this. The first blue line is the ~4 hours of 0,0%. The sudden red increase tops around ~60% (not shown in screenshot), and would probably have continued. The second blue line is me doing the test you requested. Note the rapid discharge though, even though I only disconnected the AC supply for a few minutes. [Bug 444964] [NEW] Image files disappear from desktop after thumbnails have been generated
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus On Karmic Beta, all image files disappear from the desktop (even if the desktop folder is viewed through a nautilus file browser) after their thumbnails have been generated (e.g. you can see the files as long as they have the "generating, please wait" icon). The files still actually exist, and can be accessed through a terminal. If the file was saved from an external application, the file will never show up. If the file was copied to the desktop from a nautilus file browser, the file will disappear after refreshing the desktop (F5). Only actual images seems to be affected. An empty file with an image extension is not disappearing. [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
I've looked in /var/log/dpkg.log and there are no errors, warnings or the like regarding the fglrx packages. You've marked the bug as invalid, yet I have a serious problem that I can reproduce and is willing to help track down. Is there any specific reason that you are ignoring it? Bryce, as we are now at least 2 persons with this problem, I dare say this isn't simply about my system being broken. You didn't reply to my last comment, yet closed this bug anyway, so I take it that you are not interested in actually solving this problem. I'm reopening it anyway, however, so that us affected can at least track the status on this bug until someone fixes it. ** Changed in: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu Karmic) Status: Won't Fix => Confirmed ** Tags removed: omit -- fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/440233 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
Interesting. It seems like you are restoring the missing amdpcsdb.default file from a distribution upgrade backup. I had one of those too (as mentioned in my original report). Did your driver stop working immediately after upgrading, or did your file disappear later on as well? [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
In the meantime, a new version has been released which seems to have fixed the issue. I've found this workaround / solution which works for me at least: 1) Remove all installed fglrx drivers (both ATI and Ubuntu flavored) and packages (all packages with "fglrx" somewhere in the name) 2) Remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if exists) 3) Remove the /etc/ati directory and all files within it (if exists) 4) Install the latest fglrx driver via the restricted hardware manager. I'm not sure if a standard upgrade path works though. I'd rather not re- break my system now I've finally gotten it to work.
