[Bug 99044] Re: KDM does not work if disk is full and gives no warning about it

2008-07-05 Thread Adam Porter
This MUST be fixed, SOON. I just spent three hours going around in
circles, thinking my video card was damaged somehow, or that the hard
disk had corrupted some binaries, because every time I tried to log in
to KDE with KDM, it simply restarted X! I booted into Windows, Knoppix,
Ubuntu 7.10, and Kubuntu 7.04, before somehow I realized that there was
no disk space left after I copied a bunch of files last night. The
computer was fine last night, but when I turned it on today, I couldn't
log in!

And there was still 2GB+ of free space reserved for root, but there was
no space left for users, so KDE failed to log in and there was no error
message of any kind. I looked through every log there is: kdm, kernel,
messages, syslog, dmesg, Xorg*, but none of them gave any clue at all.

As time goes by, larger and larger files are more and more common, and
users will run out of disk space more often. This has got to be fixed.

[Bug 63287] Re: Login screen menu button doesn't look like a menu button

2008-07-05 Thread Adam Porter
This problem still exists in Hardy. There is no visual clue that the
menu button is a clickable button at all, much less an important menu.

I recommend a simple "Menu" with a downward-facing arrow next to it.

[Bug 224068] Re: OpenOffice Writer scrollbars not displayed; previous screen area displayed

2008-07-05 Thread Adam Porter
Why was this bug assigned to linux-restricted-modules? I do not think
it is a video driver problem; the only applications this ever happens in
are OpenOffice apps. Not only is the scrollbar not displayed properly,
but clicking in the scrollbar area does nothing, even though scrolling
is possible. I think this is a problem with OpenOffice itself, or the
way it's integrated with KDE/Qt.

[Bug 241478] Re: OpenOffice autosaves during activity like dragging objects

2008-07-05 Thread Adam Porter
Your suggestion merely defeats the purpose of AutoSave; it doesn't solve
the problem. Setting AutoSave to one hour means that it will only
autosave once an hour, so if OO crashes during that time, all changes
will be lost. The whole point is to autosave often, so that if it
crashes, you won't lose much.

I already explained the problem, and that OO should be smart enough to
avoid the behavior of autosaving while you're moving an object, etc.

Your reply does not address solving the actual problem.

[Bug 253748] [NEW] NetworkManager very slow to find wireless networks after suspend

2008-07-31 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Kubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 on Dell XPS M1330 with Intel 4965 wireless.

network-manager 0.6.6-0ubuntu5
network-manager-kde 1:0.2.2-1ubuntu2

After resuming from suspend, I can run "sudo iwlist scan" and
immediately see available wireless networks, but KNetworkManager says no
wireless networks are found. After a minute or two, it will suddenly
find them and connect.

This almost defeats the purpose of being able to quickly resume from
suspend, if you have to wait several minutes to get online again. And
it doesn't make any sense, since iwlist can see the networks already.

[Bug 261338] [NEW] networkmanager connects to random open network instead of my encrypted one

2008-08-25 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I have a WPA2-secured 802.11g network here, but when I log in or wake up
the computer, network-manager connects to someone else's unsecured wifi
network instead of my secured one that I've already entered the
passphrase for and connected to many times. I have to manually choose
my own network every time.

Shouldn't it be obvious that I'd rather connect to a remembered, secure
network instead of some random unsecured one? This is a major usability
flaw that should be trivial to fix. Please don't make us wait for 8.10
to fix it.

[Bug 261338] Re: networkmanager connects to random open network instead of my encrypted one

2008-08-26 Thread Adam Porter
Yes, even when I remote the unsecured network from the list of known
networks, it still continues to choose that one over my known, secured
one. I still have to manually choose it.

I may have noticed another quirk: at the moment, there are two unsecured
networks in range, in addition to my secured network and someone else's
secured network. This time it automatically chose my secured network,
which makes me wonder if it only chooses an unsecured network if there's
only one of them available.

I am using Hardy on my laptop because I still use KDE 3.5, and the
current Intrepid kernel doesn't even boot on this laptop (the latest
update to the kernel causes it to hang while loading a USB
driver...sigh).

Regardless of whether it works on Intrepid, the issue still exists on
Hardy, and has existed for years. It would be great if it could be
fixed. Not having scrollbars in our word processor just doesn't seem

Gary, can you please make sure that's the case when you have tabs with
Flash open? I'm using 3.0.10 on Hardy and still have the problem.
I'm not completely sure that it's Flash-related, but I have a strong
suspicion. It seems like when it happens, if I'm able to close the
tabs that have Flash open, CPU usage goes back to idle.

I have not upgraded my BIOS, I still have version A09. I don't think
the BIOS has anything to do with this.

[Bug 241518] Re: Impress doesn't thumbnail slides until scrolled to; makes slide list useless

2008-10-28 Thread Adam Porter
Well, considering that the version in Intrepid is the same version of
OpenOffice that's in Hardy, there doesn't seem much point in testing it
again... but I installed the packages from Intrepid and tested it
anyway.

I opened a presentation I made this summer, the one that caused me to
discover this behavior. The problem is still there. (It's the same
version of Impress; I don't see how it could be solved by Ubuntu
rebuilding the packages. Why am I asked to test over and over again
when nothing's been changed to address the problem?)

Maybe your presentation is too simple. Mine is a 200 MB ODP file
consisting of 23 slides, and most slides have multiple images.
Generating a thumbnail of a slide doesn't happen instantly.

Impress makes thumbnails for all the slides that can fit in the list of
slides, and then it stops. When I scroll down in the list, it starts
making thumbnails for slides that are now visible. It doesn't make a
thumbnail for a slide until you scroll the list so the slide is visible.

That's all there is to it. It's really that simple. The fix is simple
enough in theory: just make Impress generate thumbnails for the other
slides in a low-priority background thread.

(Soapbox: Yet again I am asked to test more packages, when it should
already be clear that nothing has been done to address the stated
problem.  It takes enough time to file a bug report in the first place;
it's a waste of time for me to test packages that haven't changed
anything. Do you see what I mean?)

[Bug 241478] Re: [upstream] OpenOffice autosaves during activity like dragging objects

2008-10-23 Thread Adam Porter
Please forgive the following, but I think this is another example of
poor bug-tracking and poor end-user relations. It seems like, instead
of a developer checking the code to see if it has been updated to fix
this problem, I'm asked to download a large new major release. It seems
like many Ubuntu bug reports are handled this way: instead of the
developer checking the code, the end-user is asked to check a newer
version, over and over again. Contrast this with Debian, where it seems
like they actually look into the problem and determine whether an
attempt to fix it has been made before asking the user to try a newer
version--unless the user wasn't using the latest release when he filed
the bug.

[Bug 275721] [NEW] Kernel oops and panic on resume from suspend with Intrepid's 2.6.27

linux-image-2.6.27-4-generic = 2.6.27-4.6

I was testing the Intrepid kernel in Hardy due to iwl4965 SW microcode

In this Intrepid kernel, suspending to RAM works fine, but upon resuming
I get screen after screen of oopses and then the kernel panics. Nothing

didn't find anything about it either.

[Bug 112498] Re: When last stream on list has empty description, it won't be loaded (after program restart)

2008-10-08 Thread Adam Porter
I'd like to make a comment real quick about the handling of bugs in
general. IMHO, if you ask if the bug still exists in a newer (yet to be
released, even) version of Ubuntu, and that's all you say, you should
not mark the bug as incomplete. Marking it as incomplete will cause it
to be marked Invalid in 60 days if no one responds, but the bug will
still exist. So instead of being noticed and perhaps fixed, it will
fade away. That's not a good solution.

Basically, it doesn't matter if it is reproducible in Intrepid, because
even if it's not, the bug still needs to be fixed in Hardy, as long as
Hardy is still supported. Now maybe a newer, bugless version could be
backported to Hardy, but if so, that needs to be done. Marking the bug
as Incomplete doesn't accomplish that; it makes it more likely that it
won't happen.

I think Ubuntu should take a page from Debian's bug handling. Debian
does not frivolously dismiss bugs, even if they are minor. If the bug
still exists, it's still in the list of bugs. Sometimes they even sit
there for a year or two if no one bothers to fix them, and sometimes
they get fixed after a long time. But even if no one fixes a bug, they
don't hide the bug just because no one's responded in a while.

On top of all that, people who care about a bug (like me) have to watch
it carefully and prevent it from being marked Incomplete, which is a
waste of my time.

So please, don't mark bugs as Incomplete unless it's really the right
thing to do.

[Bug 281504] [NEW] nvidia-glx-177 177.80 causes fan to always run at max speed

2008-10-10 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-177

I have a Dell XPS M1330 laptop, running Hardy with kernel
2.6.24-19-generic and nvidia-glx-177 177.80-0ubuntu1 from Intrepid, with
the 177.80 nvidia-kernel-source package as well.

The recent upgrade from 177.76 to 177.80 causes my GPU fan to run
continuously at maximum speed while in X's VT. If I switch to the nv
driver, the fan does not run at max speed all the time. Here's what I
did to track this down:

1. Switched to "nv" in xorg.conf and rebooted.
2. Logged in to X. Fan was operating normally (i.e. barely running at all).
3. Checked lsmod, and the nvidia *kernel* module was loaded.
4. Switched back to "nvidia" in xorg.conf, logged out of X, and restarted KDM.
As soon as the screen switched to X's VT, the GPU fan went to max speed.
After 3-5 seconds, the fan dropped to a lower speed for 0.5-1 second, and then
went back to max speed.
5. This fast-slow-fast-slow cycle continued until I switched back to tty2,
upon which the fan went to idle. Switching back to X's VT caused the fan to go
back to max, and switching to tty2 caused it to go back to idle.

Making the problem even worse is the fact that rebooting doesn't slow
down the fan. I had to shut down the system for the fan to slow down,
and it stayed down until X loaded the nvidia GLX module, then it went
back to max speed.

This is causing the laptop to sound like a vacuum cleaner, and cutting
at least 30 minutes out of my battery life, maybe more.

I'm downgrading to 177.76 for now. I hope Intrepid is not released with
this bug.

[Bug 280805] Re: Latest nvidia driver for Interpid (x64) makes my fan spin all the time.

2008-10-11 Thread Adam Porter
Same with Dell XPS M1330 with GeForce 8400M GS. Version 177.76 is ok,
but 177.80 exhibits the problem.

Loading just the kernel module doesn't cause it, it's only when X is
running and on the active terminal that it happens.

[Bug 278386] [NEW] KDE Network Manager in Intrepid is a huge step backwards!

2008-10-04 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

I'm running the Kubuntu 8.10 amd64 beta LiveCD. I have Kubuntu 8.04 on
my hard disk and use it as my daily OS. I can say without a doubt that
the Network Manager applet in Intrepid is a giant step backwards! Let
me see here:

When I right-click the icon in the tray, instead of getting a list of
wireless networks that are available, I get "eth0: no carrier" in big
bold letters, and "wlan0" below that, and "New connection" below that.
If I click on "New connection" I still don't see a list of wireless
networks, only "eth0" and "wlan0", terms which are completely
meaningless to the average user. If I click "wlan0" I finally get a
list of wireless networks, but they open in a new window, which wastes
more of my time and attention. If I then choose my personal
WPA2-secured network and click "Connect and Save", Network Manager
closes that window and tries to connect, but fails of course, because it
never asked me for the passphrase! So if I then (pretending to be a new
user) manage to figure out how to open the options for the newly-chosen
wifi network, when I click Next enough times and get to the security
page of the wizard (argh, wizards were decried years ago as poor
usability!), it hasn't even automatically chosen to enable WPA2, or
security at all. I have to choose to turn on security, and then make a
blind guess at which type to use.

In Kubuntu Hardy 8.04, when I right-click the Network Manager tray icon,
I get a simple list of available networks. If I click one, it starts
connecting to it, and if necessary, asks me for the passphrase, already
using the right kind of encryption. It doesn't hit me with "ETH0: NO
CARRIER" in big letters, and it doesn't make me jump through invisible
hoops to get connected to a wireless network. It's simple, and it just
works, like it should.

Is this going to be released as THE Kubuntu 8.10? If so, it's going to
be a dismal shooting-in-the-foot for Kubuntu's reputation, and will hurt
KDE4's as well. Why has Network Manager regressed and devolved? NM
0.6.7's interface just needed some enhancing and refining, but this one
is...unbelievable.

I'm running Hardy but am testing the Intrepid kernel because of a few minor
hardware issues with the Hardy kernel.

I just rebooted twice, and the first time the pcsp device was the
primary ALSA device. artsd went nuts with CPU usage, causing it to quit
because of CPU overload, and even after restarting artsd, I still
couldn't get any sound out of Amarok. I rebooted the second time, and
now the Intel HDA device is the primary ALSA device and sound is working
fine.

Maybe this bug isn't completely fixed yet?

I have a Dell M1330, and am running Hardy with the 2.6.27-5 kernel from

trying to eject the CD, but not the first time, and not every time.
I've been playing sound through Amarok (with ALSA, no PulseAudio) and
have had no sound problems.

[Bug 253789] Re: Intel wireless iwl4965 oops on suspend: kernel NULL pointer dereference

2008-09-19 Thread Adam Porter
I installed linux-image-2.6.27-3-generic=2.6.27-3.4. After spending an
hour fixing things like video drivers that didn't automatically get
updated, and kernel modules that weren't depended on by that package, I
found this:

1. The system went into suspend-to-RAM twice without a problem.
2. The first attempt at waking the system resulted in a blank, powered-off,
non-backlit screen and an unresponsive system.
3. The second attempt at waking the system resulted at in least three
immediate kmem_cache_alloc/null pointer deference kernel Oops'es.

In conclusion, I can't test whether 2.6.27 fixes *this* bug. I am not
going to reboot a frozen kernel over and over again; at the least, that
risks fs corruption. But I do know that it introduces new bugs, and I
feel like I've basically wasted an hour and a half on this. And now I
still have to downgrade all the stuff that I had to upgrade to test this
so my system will work at least as well as it did before I started all
this.

You suggest that I report these new bugs, but how do you recommend I
report pages of kernel oopses? I can't exactly copy and paste them, and
I don't really have time to take photos of them and type them all in by
hand.

30 rows. I right-click the table and click "Table...", and browse the

[Bug 241478] [NEW] OpenOffice autosaves during activity like dragging objects

2008-06-19 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

I am working on a large presentation that includes many photos. It
takes a while to save the presentation to disk because of all the photos
(it's over 300MB right now). Just now while I was dragging an image

[Bug 241486] [NEW] Impress moves objects on its own; can't lock them; throws work away!

2008-06-19 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-impress

I am trying to make a presentation of photos. I have several photo
objects on each page. Some of them are rotated at angles and partially
off the slide. And that's fine...except Impress randomly moves them
back onto the middle of the slide on its own! This throws away all the
time I spent positioning them so they overlap just right! And it
happens when I'm working on other slides! I'll be working on a slide,
and then I'll look over to the left at the slide list, and see that
Impress has moved all my objects on all the other slides, all by itself!

To top it off, it's impossible to lock objects in place!!!

Has no one ever used Impress like this before? Has it been tested at
all? How can this problem still be around in 2.4.1?? This is about to

[Bug 241518] [NEW] Impress doesn't thumbnail slides until scrolled to; makes slide list useless

2008-06-19 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-impress

Impress does not generate thumbnails for slides in the slide list until
the slide is visible in the list. This causes long freezes while
scrolling through the list, and makes it pretty pointless in the first
place, because you can't just scroll down and click on the slide you
want until you have already scrolled to it and waited for the thumbnail
to be created.

This is very, very basic functionality. Impress will never surpass
PowerPoint as long as it has issues like this.

[Bug 63293] Re: Comments not saved if network test fails

2008-07-16 Thread Adam Porter
With respect, in my opinion, a better way to handle a bug report like
this would be to make sure the developer of the app sees it, because he
should know if he's fixed the bug. It's enough trouble to report a bug
in the first place; asking me to retest the app a year later, when the
developer hasn't even acknowledged it, is discouraging. If my first
report didn't get any results, why would a second one?

I've also noticed that sometimes on resuming, Firefox doesn't freeze,

cut the CPU usage back to normal, after which I could reopen them and
it was fine. *shrug*

Does that mean that all Hardy users need to do to fix this is to
enable laptop mode on AC and battery?

Do you mean that laptop mode has other, undesirable consequences that
should be avoided by default? Do you know how it will be solved in
Hardy without laptop mode?

Sorry for the questions. I'm not sure if this is enough of an issue
for my laptop that I should enable laptop mode all the time, but I
think it's worth keeping an eye on it. The SMART value's percentage
is not changing that quickly, regardless of the raw value. I'm not
fully convinced, with the variations in individual drives, that anyone
really knows what the best solution is. But if you have advice, it
would be appreciated. I will probably be staying with Hardy for a
while.

Thanks for your work on this issue!

That is strange. I'm on Hardy using wifi and Network Manager goes
hours between log writes. I checked $(sudo grep network /var/log/*).
I have a Dell M1330 with iwl4965 using the iwlagn 2.3.5kds module.

Just FYI, when I installed the package from -proposed, I noticed the
postinst script restarting the ACPI stuff in /etc/init.d and saw it
set the PM mode then. Is a restart still necessary?

May I suggest that anyone who still has issues and comments on this
bug should include this information:

Laptop make and model
BIOS version
Hard disk make, model, and firmware revision (available from smartctl)

Perhaps we can discover a pattern of manufacturers or models which
handle certain settings in different ways.

Are you absolutely sure that's caused by this package? Sometimes my
Hardy system also fails to resume from suspend with the screen never
turning on, but it's always done that, and I still don't know why.

[Bug 310138] [NEW] CD/DVD does not eject on M1330, even though eject -v says command succeeded

2008-12-20 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

I'm using Hardy on a Dell XPS M1330 laptop.

I burned a DVD with K3b. After burning, K3b said it couldn't verify the
ISO filesystem image size--weird. I tried to mount the disc and see if
it burned correctly, but nothing happened. I tried to eject the disc
from KDE, and nothing happened. I pressed the eject button on the
laptop, and the music I had playing started stuttering and the screen
froze for several seconds. Then the system resumed playing, but the
disc didn't eject. I tried running commands like:

eject
sudo eject
sudo eject scd0
etc.

And nothing happened. dmesg shows this:

I finally discovered that some other kernel module packages were causing
an old 1.x.x version of the module to be loaded, even though the newer
module was also installed. After removing all the unnecessary module
packages, the 2.3.5 version of the module loaded, and I've had no more
problems suspending.

[Bug 63293] Re: Comments not saved if network test fails

2009-02-09 Thread Adam Porter
(I'm basically repeating myself here...) Respectfully, please do not ask
me to retest a bug like this (again!). If the developer or maintainer
of the app has made no effort to fix this bug (which is a result of code
that wasn't written), it still exists. Code must be written to handle
this situation. Until that happens, it's still a bug. You're asking me
to download the ISO and boot it up and start an install process just to
test this, when it's apparent that no one's even tried to fix it.

Writing a form-letter "please test this again" response to this bug
after what I've already posted on it is almost insulting. Debian
doesn't handle bug reports like this.

How do you define that philosophy, then? I don't understand what you

It's hard for me to see how implementing this fix/feature would deter
anyone from using Ubuntu. :) To me it's not a security feature at
all; it's more akin to the safeguards in place to prevent accidental
launch of nuclear weapons. How would it be destructive to Ubuntu's
reason for existence? I don't understand what you mean.

There are many things that people, even good people, should do, but
don't. Is "they deserve what they get" the kind of attitude Ubuntu
wants to project? Is that even how we should treat other people? I
don't understand what your goal is with Ubuntu. What you're calling
for sounds more like it belongs in a distro like...Slackware? Gentoo?
Please explain what you're trying to achieve here. :)

I've read some horror stories; they aren't hard to find online. I am
a very careful driver, with a clean record, but just the other day a
fellow and I backed into each other in the parking lot. No one is
perfect; mistakes happen to the best of us. Thankfully the damage was
minor, and both of us were kind and understanding towards the other.
To me, that is the kind of attitude Ubuntu is about.

I can see you're quite passionate about this idea. I confess that I

I didn't want to mention the movies, because I'm sure they leave a lot
to be desired in the Reality Department. But even in the movies, it
usually takes multiple physical keys to unlock the Big Red Button. :)

Respectfully, I think your argument in this paragraph is a logical
fallacy, along the lines of a Slippery Slope argument. Just because
the rm command by default prevents the deletion of / doesn't mean that
users "will expect the system to save them from themselves doing
anything potentially destructive." Just because a car has seatbelts,
airbags, and anti-lock brakes doesn't mean that people believe they
can safely aim their car towards the edge of a cliff. We're talking
about one minor option that prevents accidents, an option that can be
easily disabled by anyone who is bothered by it.

We're not talking about the partitioner; only the rm command. Since
you brought up logical fallacies, is this an example of a Red Herring?

If my foot was at risk of being hit by a bowling ball unless I typed
with perfect accuracy and faultless thinking, I would want the system
to prevent the bowling ball from falling onto my foot by accident.
Even nail guns have safeties that prevent discharge unless the gun is
pressed against a surface. Thankfully, neither is usually controlled
by something as complex as a computer.

What does the word "ubuntu" mean?

Re: [Bug 174283] Re: rm does not preserve root by default

2009-04-13 Thread Adam Porter
I think we all want to keep the "philosophy of *nix" alive and well;
without it, we probably wouldn't even have Ubuntu today. And we all
want to make Ubuntu better and more useful; we don't want it to
stagnate and become irrelevant. And we'd hope to gain more users and
build community along the way.

But what exactly is the philosophy of Unix? Is the real philosophy of
Unix to take no precautions against simple mistakes that anyone, even
the most experienced user, can make? Mistakes that can have
catastrophic consequences?

Unix is a great foundation, but it isn't rooted in goodness towards
others. But Ubuntu is intended to be. Personally, I'm thankful that
I don't always get what I deserve, because I'd be in bad shape if I
did. Just as we should be forgiving to each other, so should the
systems we design be forgiving to their users. That doesn't mean
having endless popup boxes; in a case like this, it's a simple fix for
a huge payoff. And what's the downside? Non-compliance with a man
page or an old tradition? We can change both of those. We have the
technology. :)

Yes, it is in the OO version that's in Hardy.

That page says:

If you prefer a more detailed, itemized definition, a paper cut is:

* A bug, or an unintended problem occurring within an existing
piece of software,
* the presence of which makes a computer more difficult or less
pleasant to use,
* that is easy to fix,
* that the average user would encounter during his/her first day of using...
* ...Ubuntu Desktop Edition* as configured by a default installation.

If a potential paper cut fails to meet any of the criteria above, it
is not a paper cut.

As far as I can tell, this bug meets all of those criteria.

[Bug 35249] Re: acx firmware are not available for the driver

2006-06-24 Thread Adam Porter
I just did a clean install of Dapper on my laptop. My DWL-650+ would
not load the firmware until I ran "sudo ln -s
/lib/firmware/2.6.15-25-386/acx/default/ti* /lib/firmware". Now it
works fine.

Please don't tell me it's a problem with an old or conflicting package.
It worked without any manual changes in Breezy, but Dapper requires me
to do this to fix it.

[Bug 63286] Re: hibernate.sh freezes on "modprobe thermal", anacron not started, kernel upgrades don't finish

2006-10-18 Thread Adam Porter
A couple days ago, after doing a dist-upgrade, I hibernated. A little
while ago I resumed, and then did another dist-upgrade. I noticed that
the update-initramfs script was stuck again, so I checked, and sure
enough, "/bin/bash /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh force" is stuck waiting on
"modprobe thermal". After killing the "modprobe thermal" process, the
hibernate script finished, and now update-initramfs is finishing up.

[Bug 66872] [Edgy freeze exception requested] Debian update makes backup of image while making new image

2006-10-19 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

initramfs-tools (0.83) unstable; urgency=high
...
* update-initramfs: Keep an initramfs backup while we are running. Do also
keep the booted initramfs as .bak in /boot. First helps on power cut.
Second is a good conservative approach and demanded feature.
Thanks Thiemo Nagel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for report. (closes: 387780)

I think this is an important change that should be included in Edgy. Already,
my laptop causes the hibernate script to freeze on resume waiting for "modprobe
thermal" to finish, which also causes update-initramfs to freeze. This
combination could leave the system in an unbootable state, especially for a
user that doesn't know how to fix it. At least this fix would make it easier
to recover from such a situation.

** Affects: initramfs-tools (Ubuntu)
