[Bug 269007] Re: totem-gstreamer-video-indexer crashed with SIGSEGV in init_vlc_rl()

2008-09-12 Thread Reinhard Tartler
after looking a bit closer into the code, it seems that an internal
table got somehow corrupted. How that can happen is totally unclear to
me. In order to investigate the issue deeper, I'd really need an example
file demonstrating the crash.

The problem might be that gstreamer-ffmpeg is expecting ffmpeg to have
an h263 encoder and decoder, but we stripped the encoder registration
out. Again, something I cannot easily tell without access to an example
file that demostrates the crash.

** Summary changed:

- totem-gstreamer-video-indexer crashed with SIGSEGV in init_vlc_rl()

2008-09-12 Thread Toby Dickenson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 88746 ***

It looks different to #88746. You mention you have one USB drive that
works, and one that does not; can you confirm this happens even if there
are inserted into the same USB port. That would definitely make it
different to #88746.

If that is the case, can you eliminate the possibility that your "Relay"
drive is defective by trying it on a different computer.

[Bug 57091] Re: proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_syncookies=1 should be seriously considered to permit SYN flood defense...

2008-09-12 Thread alecm3
We installed 2 production servers and suddenly we started getting
strange connection problems, with no errors in the application or system
logs. The problems were highly intermittent, but amounted to being
unable to connect to a port our TCP server was receiving client internet
connections on.

After 3 days of debugging (netfilter, the server application, writing
custom bash/awk programs to poll and graph netstat, doing tcpdumps) the
problem what traced to random SYN attacks.

It turns out that net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies=1 is commented out in the
*server* edition of Ubuntu 8.04!

After all this wasted time (and upset users), my only reaction is
"WTF...?" We have many SuSE production servers, starting from 9.0 and
they all came with syn cookies enabled. Messages like

possible SYN flooding on port 80. Sending cookies.

are *very* common in /var/log/messages, anybody who has run a heavily
loaded server with many connections has seen tons of them.

A developer above seems to answer that "use of this option causes the
system to violate the TCP standard". I guess SuSE developers understood
better that a server-intended Linux distribution is not a computer
science exercise, but an operating system that is *actually used* for
production servers.

[Bug 135324] Re: Gutsy: OpenOffice thumbnails transparent

2008-09-12 Thread Bruce van der Kooij
Here's a version of the tracker thumbnailer written in Python which uses
the Python Imaging Library (PIL) to modify the background color to white
(works for all ODF types). It's quite similar to the one presented in
the Ubuntu Forums earlier
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=76566), but that one didn't
change the background color so had the same transparency issue.

This could replace the Tracker version but would (I assume) bring in
some unwanted dependencies (Python, PIL etc.). Is there a separate
thumbnailer package such as thunar-thumbnailers?

Also the shadow effect on PDF thumbnails seems to be generated by
evince-thumbnailer (evince-thumbnailer -s 128 test.pdf test.png). I
didn't replicate this.

that is the path - it is something like that anyway. I can't check until
I get home), that you will find that HAL is getting the vendor and model

Guys,
I was having this problem early in the Hardy release cycle, but after
months of usage on multiple machines I can say that now is almost
disappeared.

To me, it would be more correct to say that the bug is resolved, than
not.

As usual, great work guys.

[Bug 269291] [NEW] Keyboard layout is automatically switched on application startup only with Compiz enabled

2008-09-12 Thread Daniel Ursache-Dogariu
Public bug reported:

System info:

Ubuntu 8.04.1
Compiz 0.7.4
Gnome 2.22.3
gnome-applets 2.22.2-0ubuntu2

Steps to recreate the behaviour:

Close all desktop windows. In Keyboard Preferences add three layouts (ie: USA,
Rou, Cze). Select "Rou" as default and after that untick "Separate layout for
each window". Choose the USA layout from the Keyboard Indicator Applet.
When you start Firefox, the global layout is automatically switched to Rou.
Switch the layout through the applet again to USA. When you start another
application (ie: System - Preferences - Keyboard) the global layout is switched
back to Rou. For other applications (ie: Totem Movie Player) the layout isn't
automatically switched.

This behaviour happens ONLY with Compiz enabled. If it's disabled then
the layout doesn't switch automatically when starting new applications
(it remains to what is currently selected on Keyboard Indicator Applet).

switch the effects off, the effects will be enabled again after restart

2008-09-12 Thread Sebastien Bacher
thank you for your bug report but that's not a bug, what else do you
expect? nautilus to display a directory which is not available or the
dialog to close? it used to close and lot of users reported bugs about

it just goes to a directory available under the one you were browsing

[Bug 246067] Re: Kernel panic during boot in VirtualBox with kernel 2.6.26.*-generic

2008-09-12 Thread Trip McKay
Booted up-to-date Intrepid with 2.6.27-3.4 successfull 3 times without any
problems to desktop with Virtualbox 2.0.0 and VT-X/AMD-V disabled. The third
time it fell back to text-output doing a fsck check but continued without any
problems.
I do have to say that with VT-X/AMD-V (which my CPU supports) enabled it feels
somehow faster...

[Bug 225400] Re: web page -> X server crash/blank, no display until reboot [Q965]

2008-09-12 Thread AnttiKaihola
I'm experiencing the same issue using the 2.2.1 version of the Intel
driver on a Dell Inspiron 500m. Everything works in normal orientation,
but when I rotate left, Totem (and the Firefox plugin) hangs the system
when it's trying to display either a video or a visualizer.

I tried to change the video output from v4l2 to v4l with gstreamer-
properties, but it didn't make any difference.

I'm currently running a multi-head setup, but the problem occurs also
when using only the laptop's own TFT.

Here's output from lspci and xdpyinfo:

When I try to view the file in Totem using Intrepid's version of the
ffmpeg gstreamer plugin, I get massive artifacting / colour issues. I
would speculate this is probably fixed in the latest ffmpeg gstreamer

This obviously brings us back to the need for upgrading ffmpeg as per my
mail list email. I offer you my full support with testing ffmpeg
upgrades and I can see what I can do to rally some others to it as well.

This night I booted with an alpha5 livecd using noreplace-paravirt,
chrooted my existing (virtual) alpha5 Hd installation, and installed
the 2.6.27-3 image. After rebooting it worked but, as the livecd
itself, feels very sluggish. For every thing I do I have to wait for
the screen to redraw (and it does *slowly*).

I am using Virtualbox 2.0 (1.6 had the same problem, though).

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-09-12 Thread Pascal Vandeputte
I'm highly in favor of the blacklist approach used by Novell/openSUSE as
well. It tracks different laptop/hard disk combinations and knows
exactly which apm value (254/255) fixes the problem for each entry. The
storage-fixup script was written and is maintained by kernel developer
Tejun Heo by the way, you can read more information and find the latest
version of the script and config file at
http://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Known_issues

If your drive isn't listed yet, you can add the config yourself by
looking at the examples and comparing with the output of "dmidecode",
"hdparm -I /dev/sda" and "smartctl -a /dev/sda" on your system. You're
encouraged to send Tejun Heo this information and whether hdparm -B
254/255 fixes it, so the drive db gets more and more complete. You can
do this by mailing [EMAIL PROTECTED] like I did here:
http://marc.info/?l=linux-ide&m=122082089712147&w=2

This way regular users won't need to use trial and error to see which
apm value is needed to disable it.

[Bug 47994] Re: PowerBook G4 12" - Suspend to disk doesn't work

2008-09-12 Thread Guido Günther
I'm using two tiny scripts for hibernate in Debian, pbbuttonsd isn't
needed, pm-utils can handle it:

http://honk.sigxcpu.org/con/Suspend_to_Disk_with_a_Apple_Powerbook_G4_12_.html

Maybe this helps. Gnome-power-manager forbidding hibernate altogether
seems to be a different issue though, maybe there's a Ubuntu specific
file forbidding it in /usr/share/hal/fdi?

The system should indicate that it can hibernate via:
 power_management.can_hibernate = true
in the lshal output.

[Bug 261816] Re: nvidia: Multiple versions in DKMS

2008-09-12 Thread Bruno Patri
I had the same kind of issue this morning with nvidia module (kernel
2.6.27-3-generic and nvidia 177.70 update), with this message during the
kernel update :

nvidia (177.68): Unable to locate
/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/177.68/source/dkms.conf
DKMS tree must be manually fixed

(this is because /usr/src/nvidia-177.68 no longer exists)

nivdia-177.70 module was built but not installed.

I've fixed this with dkms, from the command line :

[Bug 269304] [NEW] After update to sunbird_0.8+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~hardy1_i386 in german: undefined entity error

2008-09-12 Thread Peter Funk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sunbird

Running Ubuntu 8.04.1 :
sunbird used to work fine on my computer before Sep 5th.
After installing all available updates as usual (especially
sunbird_0.8+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~hardy1_i386) sunbird stopped working
showing the error message display in the attached screen shot:
XML-Verarbeitungsfehler: Undefinierte Entität (meaning undefined entity)
This bug has similar symptoms as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/enigmail/+bug/126878/

Workaround: Using 'bash -c "LANG=en_US.UTF-8 sunbird"' works in english
though.

I suspect the package:
pool/universe/s/sunbird-locales/sunbird-locale-de_0.7-0ubuntu1_all.deb
needs to be updated too, but there is no sunbird-locale-de_0.8 yet.

Is there a way to stop these backported updates until the needed
language package becomes available too?

Regards, Peter

[Bug 269303] [NEW] Impossible to type a decimal point

2008-09-12 Thread Gaëtan de Menten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

I can't seem to type a decimal point in the calculator. There are
several workaround to get one (click on the corresponding button, hit
enter to get the trailing zeroes and then edit the decimal part) but
this renders the calculator almost unusable anyway...

And no, my "." key is not broken.

I recently upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy and never noticed the problem
before, so I guess this was introduced in Hardy.

It might be also worth mentioning that I live in Belgium and have
configured the appropriate keyboard layout, which means I have to hit
shift to be able to enter a decimal point and it might be that gcalctool
totally ignores the shift key. I just noticed it ignores the CAPSLOCK
state, so that seem plausible. I find it barely believable, but this
option might be worth investigating...

Not sure this can help, but here is the output of "locale":

[Bug 269302] [NEW] At the GDM scree, Dell 610 laptop screen remains on while on a docking station and with an external screen connected

2008-09-12 Thread Emmanuel Pacaud
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On the GDM login screen, when my laptop is connected to the docking
station with an external screen, the laptop screen remains on. Also, the
resolution on the external screen is too low. Fortunately, when I log
in, the laptop screen switches off, and the external output is set to
the correct native resolution of the external screen (after an annoying
sequence of 6 switch on/off of the external output).

Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release:8.10

[Bug 262294] Re: [Intrepid Ibex] Ubuntu live CD fails to load with Adaptec SCSI controller installed

2008-09-12 Thread Walldorf2000
I apologize for high jacking this bug. It is not Adaptec related. I
tested the DVD from 9th of September with three machines.

I got the (initramfs) prompt on the old Atholon 500 machine described
above and a brand new machine with AMD64 X2 with an AMD 770 chipset and
SATA HDD. The new machine failed for normal SATA mode and AHCI mode.
There is no SCSI device in it. The Ubuntu 8.04 DVD boots up fine with
both modes.

The only machine I found where I could boot this DVD is an four year old
Intel machine (mobo and CPU).

[Bug 234015] Re: blueproximity is unable to find bluetooth devices

2008-09-12 Thread Lars Friedrichs
Hi,

Sorry I catch on this bug so late, is it still there?
Is only scanning affected or even the whole communication?

Do you have (I cannot see that in dmesg but ask for it anyway) another
bluetooth device connected? Could you post the output of the hciconfig
command please?

What is the output of this command: dpkg --status python-bluez ?
