** Description changed:

I've been (mostly) successfully using suspend/resume on my laptop until
recently. Now the 'pm-suspend' command (as well as the 'suspend' entry
in the GDM) simply switches to a blank text console (blinking _ cursor
only). Nothing else happens, but I can switch back to either text
consoles or graphical consoles with key combinations (Alt-Fx, Ctrl-
- Alt-F7). Same happens if I run 'pm-hibernate'.
+ Alt-F7). Same happens if I run 'pm-hibernate'. There is nothing
+ unusual in any logs or dmesg.

- Dell D620, nvidia card with the proprietary driver. Nothing unusual in
- any logs or dmesg.
+ If I have an external screen enabled (using nVidia TwinView), X
+ restarts, so it's likely caused by the nVidia driver, at least to some
+ extent. In that case, I find this in syslog:
+
+ WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
+ (GDM restart messages)
+ WARNING: Command '/usr/sbin/pm-suspend' exited with status 1
+
