I just wanted to add that I also use Hardy on a AMD64 computer (HP
Laptop) could this be a problem with the b43 and AMD64 arch?

Is everybody using AMD64 or are there also problems with i386?

[Bug 195051] Re: X freezes in drmCommandWrite() when Compiz is enabled on ATI Radeon Mobility 9600

2008-04-18 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
just one thing...
on my card (radeon7000/VE) all worked fine with the driver 6.6.3 from 7.04.
it's freezing with 6.7.195 from 7.10.
also, i bought specifically my card at the time because ATI developped free
drivers (it was a while back). at the time they gave NDA docs and paid some
people to develop the drivers.
anyway, just wanted to point out. for at least some of the freezes, all was
fine with 6.6.x and broke with 6.7.x. i believe adding support for newer cards
and for XRANDR broke some things.

[Bug 194029] Re: 2.6.24-8 Introduces Network Issue

2008-04-18 Thread Amber-Willow
i doubt it.. I've copy pasted his "solution" below, as you can see at
the end of his text, its obviously not proper coding. Its just another
workaround to give it more priority. I haven't tested it myself yet, but
checking for the event ever 0.01 second doesn't seem like a healthy way
of making a final fix.

In CEventQueue.cpp, calculating timeLeft generates values on the order of
3 to 6 seconds. When poll() is invoked, it blocks for the full time, then
operations seem to resume normally. This happens frequently enough that
synergy on my box is unusable.

To verify this was the source of the hangs, I hard-coded
CEventQueue::getEvent()'s call to m_buffer->waitForEvent(timeLeft) in
CEventQueue.cpp on line 149 to use a timeout of 0.1, and the client hangs
as often, but for a tenth of a second. To get it into a usable state
locally, I've jacked the value down to 0.01.

This is clearly not the right fix for the code written as it is. If I have
time to investigate it some more I'll send along more information or a
patch.

[Bug 219060] [NEW] No sound from Realtek HD Audio

2008-04-18 Thread arupdg
Public bug reported:

I have a Toshiba U300 laptop. I loaded Gutsy Gibbon without a hitch but
sound won't play. The laptop has a Realtek HD Audio driver. I checked
the ALSA site and found Realtek is not supported. I went to the Realtek
site and downloaded the driver realtek-linux-audiopack-5.01 and
installed it as per the installation notes given with the package. It
found One Intel HDA card and one legacy (non-PNP) chip! I chose the
Intel card but the test sound did not play. The following is the

[Bug 219059] [NEW] alternate installer: installation step failed

2008-04-18 Thread rinonapo
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 Hedgy Hoary Beta i386 install fails with the alternate
install cd, I choose automatic partitioning with LVM and Encryption and
when it come to the install software step at over 80% it pops up a red
window with written:

"Select and Install software /n Installation Step Failed /n An
installation Step Failed. You can try to run the failing item again from
the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is:
Select and install Software"

Tried to skip it and jump to the next item which is install grub but
still it failed and says the system wont be bootable without grub..

What can I do? I had tried the graphical standard install cd and it
worked smoothly the installation, so this is a alternate install problem
maybe having to do with the LVM and crypto options I chose.

About BIOS : I also checked inside : it is very simple, not a lot of options,
no PNP options, no tricky things, only the base. So, nothing to play with for
explaining the bug.
In addition, I just tell that Vista (removed now) on that Laptop was producing
sound without problem.

i have the wireless working the only thing i did was to go to synaptics

wireless, this made my laptop crash, but i just restart the laptop and there
it was the blue light and wireless, just check that the fix was released but
you have to reinstall the jockey-gtk manually, just reinstall on synaptics
(don't uninstall it just mark for reinstallation)

[Bug 219061] [NEW] [Hardy] Does not install on VIA PD6000E Motherboard (Multiple problems)

2008-04-18 Thread MG
Public bug reported:

8.04 Hardy Beta Ubuntu (several versions) (current version for
17-Apr-2008) does not install correctly on the VIA EPIA Mini-ITX PD6000E
motherboard for multiple reasons. All tests were with the i386 versions.
7.10 Gusty installs correctly without problems.

1) When trying to boot the regular desktop install from the live CD
(regular Gnome Ubuntu), the system would crash. This occurs immediately
after the point where the progress bar (shown during booting, waves back
and forth below the "Ubuntu" logo) disappears, but just before the brown
screen (which should show before the desktop fully appears) appears. I'm
not sure if this description is clear enough, but there's no text which
describes what step things are on. The essential point is that it is
just before the live CD desktop should appear. This happens consistently
at exactly the same point in the sequence (this was tested approximately
5 times). The system will either turn off, reboot, or simply freeze with
a blank screen.

2) Using the alternate install CD (Gnome Ubuntu), everything will
install except for Grub, which will not install. LILO can be installed,
but the system hangs on reboot at "[48.418762] Uniform CD-ROM driver
Revision 3.20".

3) Using the server install, Grub will also not install. LILO will
install and the system will reboot and run.

Previous versions of Ubuntu (Gnome) have installed and run on this
hardware. The system was running 7.10 previous to this. The PC is
primarily used as a test system. Just prior to this install, the system
very briefly had a version of Windows Server 2008 on it in a dual boot
configuration with 7.10 Gusty. Both OS would dual boot with this fine.
All the partitions were removed and the hard drive was completely
reformatted several times during the course of attempting to get Hardy
to install.

The PC is used for test purposes, and the drive can be wiped at any time
for further testing if necessary.

[Bug 219059] Re: alternate installer: installation step failed

2008-04-18 Thread rinonapo
the step after the one which first fails is not install grub rather "Build LTSP
chroot", now I'll try to install again with the alternate install cd but
without choosing LVM and crypto option.
Another thing: I tested the install cd (it's a dvd actually so should be less
prone to errors) and it has no errors.

[Bug 219062] [NEW] Could not read from resource

2008-04-18 Thread bmdavis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Currently using Hardy Heron and I Love it! Sure, it's still beta, but
I've had hardly any problems.

After a most recent update, however, the totem movie player stopped
playing DVDs. This worked on the initial install of BETA, and because
there was 5 updates of over 260 MB, I can't trace which update did it.
But now, upon entering any DVD, I get the message,

"Could not read from resource".

Under playlist I always have "1" and "2", regardless of the DVD. Tried
6 DVDs, none of them worked.Any ideas?

Thanks.

[Bug 219067] [NEW] No gnome-panel at startup

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I have installed Ubuntu Hardy beta. All started to go wrong when I tried
to send mails with evolution. No possibility any more to make Evolution
work, even if Modzilla worked perfecly. I tried a new installation of
Evolution, no use. Later when I booted Ubuntu Hardy, I had no Gnome-
panel tool bar anymore. I did everything to my knowledge to have it
back. Finally I had to reinstall completely the system.

Could it be that there are viruses spread among the Ubuntu systems?

[Bug 218978] Re: Sourcing bash_completion twice aborts with error (and the bashrc script!)

2008-04-18 Thread Mika Fischer
This bug has been fixed some time ago in hardy.

You seem to be using hardy, but the lines you refer to are not in the
current version of the bash_completion script. Maybe you edited the old
version and did not agree to use the new version on upgrade.

$ dpkg -s bash-completion | grep Version
Version: 20060301-3ubuntu3
$ md5sum /etc/bash_completion
16473c99f6e9e343309309eebd25fa1a /etc/bash_completion

When did you upgrade to hardy? Do you remeber getting a prompt about
/etc/bash_completion?

Maybe it's also a problem with the latest changes of the bash-completion
package, which were supposed to get rid of spurious prompts and may have
prevented the prompt in your case too...

[Bug 184600] Re: ssb error while loading wifi module b43

2008-04-18 Thread Colin King
Hi Nicolo,

I had to revert the patch for rev 02 chipsets because it was a
significant patch that broke the broadcom driver for BCM4312 chipsets to
name just a few. Apologies for this, note that I understand that 2.6.25
fixes your problem but to isolate the fix and backport it to 2.6.24 so
close to the Hardy release without breaking the driver for other BCM
chipsets is not possible. I am therefore marking this as "Won't Fix"
for Hardy, and keeping it open for Hardy + 1.

I'm not sure but I think it uses xrandr to query what modes are
available. Which version of Ubuntu are you running when you tried
this ? What kind of monitor are you using ?

Radha> Does that information help in any manner??

Radha> Had to get to a terminal session, stop gdm, remove all xorg.conf

vesa is a generic driver. You can try following, after stopping gdm, and
wiping off xorg.conf:

1. Login to a TTY (using Ctrl-Alt-F1).
2. Execute following in one shot at your TTY.

abbe [~] chateau $ Xorg & ; sleep 5 ; export DISPLAY=:0 ; xrandr
>xrandr-output.txt ; killall Xorg

3. Now, back at TTY, xrandr-output.txt contains output of xrandr.

You can also execute 'ddcprobe' in a root shell, to get list of
resolutions, refresh rates supported by your monitor. ddcprobe doesn't need X
running.

Radha> because, there was dist upgrade pushed on my PC. After the

abbe [~] chateau $ fgrep drivers/ /var/log/Xorg.0.log

[Bug 219064] [NEW] [Hardy Server] Changing consoles causes screen to go blank, requiring reboot.

2008-04-18 Thread MG
Public bug reported:

For 8.04 Hardy Beta Server (version current for 17-Apr-2008) changing
console (ctrl-alt 1, ctrl-alt 2, etc.) causes the text to disappear
resulting in a blank screen (except for the cursor). Changing back to
the original console does not cure the problem. Typing on the keyboard
will cause the cursor to move about the screen (in large increments),
but no text is visible.

The console may possibly not be accepting input when this occurs.
Attempting to do a log-in and shutdown (by typing in the correct key
sequence) did not work (several attempts were made).

This was found while editing a config file with nano. When I switched
back to the console which had nano, the portions of the screen which are
in reverse video to display the menu options were visible, but only as
white blocks on a black background, and with no visible text. (Nano is
mentioned to assist in the description of the problem. This is not being
reported as a nano problem).

This occurred while testing installation of Hardy. The hardware is a Via
Epia Mini-ITX PD6000E.

2008-04-18 Thread exactt
@Leann

what is the status of this bug? i am asking because this bug really
keeps one from using WM devices. lengthy howtos starting with "patch
your kernel and rebuild it" are definitely a show-stopper. also the
latest mandriva distribution is supposed to have better support for WM
devices and ubuntu should be able to catch up. i would love to see a
backport to hardy!

[Bug 203423] Re: Timezone map zooming is too sudden and disorienting

2008-04-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
The current version is still not nice to use, some issues are:

- the zoom starts too quickly, it's not easy to move the mouse pointer over a
country in less than one second which means it zoom on the wrong area while you
are still moving, maybe it should zoom after you stop moving the mouse for a
second or so, that would allow user to select slowly their location?
- the zoom out effect needs a delay too, it's too easy to get the mouse pointer
out of the widget while scrolling
- the zoom is not correctly centered, putting the mouse pointer over the France
make it zoom in the north of England for example

[Bug 218978] Re: Sourcing bash_completion twice aborts with error (and the bashrc script!)

OK. I just checked a gutsy->hardy upgrade and if /etc/bash_completion is
unchanged it gets replaced with the new version. If it has changes, a
prompt comes up, at least with aptitude.

So most probably you got a prompt and chose to keep the old (changed)
version.

You can get the latest version by doing this:
sudo mv /etc/bash_completion /etc/bash_completion.changed
sudo dpkg --force-confmiss -i
/var/cache/apt/archives/bash-completion_20060301-3ubuntu3_all.deb

[Bug 192888] Re: firefox crashes on flash contents

2008-04-18 Thread Juergen Kreileder
nspluginwrapper fixes the firefox crashes but it's only a suboptimal
work-around. The flash plugin still crashes a lot, it just doesn't take
firefox with it anymore!

The real problem that has to be fixed are the flushplugin crashes. The
number of those increased dramatically about 2 weeks ago, for me they
are neither caused by pulseaudio nor by libflashsupport. I'll try to
debug it on the weekend if i get some free time.

(The addition of nspluginwrapper is still welcome though because of the
introduced asynchronity.)

[Bug 181977] Re: Mutiple file transfers appear to cause libmtp to hang

2008-04-18 Thread Jaakko Sipari
Hi!

I'm experiencing the same problem in Gutsy using mtpfs & Nautilus to
copy files to my Creative Zen 8GB player (fw 1.21.01). The version of
mtpfs (0.8svn) I have is installed from the http://ubuntu.jbbr.net
repository. I've noticed that through nautilus I can only do a single
batch copy (one or more files in one "drag'n'drop"). If I try to copy
files after the first copy mtpfs breaks and cannot be used again before
unmounting & re-mounting the player.

The problem doesn't exist when only using command line (cp) to copy the
files to the mtpfs mount. Using cp I can copy any amount of files and
cleanly unmount the player. This is why it looks like the problem is in
Nautilus and not in mtpfs. Maybe Nautilus can't corretly handle
filesystems using FUSE?

Re: [Bug 95886] Re: Wrong keyboard layout after installation (US instead of FI)

2008-04-18 Thread svaens
Sorry.
I had thought that Jeffrey Ratcliffe was referring to my complaint that the
german keyboard wasn't working.
I sought to clarify that I had discovered the cause of my problem. It is no
bug.
Or perhaps I misunderstood.
I did open a bug for it, but as the behaviour IS as required, it was shortly
closed.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

svaens.

[Bug 219075] [NEW] synergy client switches repeat of the local keyboard off

2008-04-18 Thread Artem Baguinski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synergy

Whenever I run synergyc -f ... the repeat function of the original keyboard
gets switched off. the server keyboard repeats as usual.
I can reenable the keyrepeat by going into System > Preferences > Keyboard and
unchecking/checking the "Key presses repeat when key is held down" (the
ckeckbox doesn't correspond to actual state after start of synergyc) but the
repeat is off as soon as I switch the synergy "focus" to server and then back
to client.

this is on ubuntu 7.10, synergy 1.3.1-2ubuntu2.

how, how to find out?

apparently it does work sometimes for normal installs, somtimes I'm stuck again
in the "Choose Language" screen. It's there, but only works at one out of three
installs.

[Bug 218145] Re: When typing password to grant access to keyring it never accepts it, forced to press deny

2008-04-18 Thread René Nieuwenhuizen
I had to remove ~/.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring to get it working.
After removal of this file the next time the dialog appeared it
requested a password to be set on the default keyring and everything
started working perfectly.

[Bug 211644] Re: [hardy] Sound card hda Intel doesn't work with kernel 2.6.24 series

2008-04-18 Thread yann
I don't think it is related to BIOS.

I've tried the -rt kernel and sound is back.

the problem seems linked to missing kernel modules compilation options,
I have the same dmesg output as Kasimir with a full list of "Unknown symbol"
when using the generic kernel.

occuring at the exact same time as for everyone else, a few weeks back.
Before that it has worked fine for a vey long time.
