[UAI] [Journals] - [Robotics] - call for paper - Special Issue "Advances in Underwater Robotics"

2020-05-18 Thread Linda Wang

Dear colleague,

We are pleased to invite you to contribute a paper to our Special Issue
"*Advances in Underwater Robotics*" in /Robotics/(ISSN 2218-6581).

*Guest Editors*: Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Conte and Prof. Dr. Satoru Yamaguchi
Special Issue Website:
https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/underwater_robot
*Deadline*: *31 October 2020*

Robotics has long established itself as the key technology for the
exploration and exploitation of the underwater environment, as well as
for all or almost all other activities that are performed under the sea
surface. Underwater robotic vehicles, either remotely operated or
autonomous, and robotic platforms are now commercially available and
widely used in oceanography, environmental monitoring, marine biology,
underwater archaeology, the subsea oil and gas industry, deep sea
mining, marine farming and aquaculture, naval warfare, maritime
transport and communication security, maritime installation maintenance,
and recreational activities at sea.

The importance and richness of resources for the development of human
activities in the underwater environment and its intrinsic hostility
motivate and challenge science and technology to conceive and construct
ever more efficient robotic tools and techniques. In particular, there
is a great demand for advances that may increase the functional and
behavioral autonomy of underwater robots, facilitate human/machine
interaction in the underwater environment, simplify the operability of
complex platforms, reduce costs, and increase safety, reliability and
efficiency.

The objective of this Special Issue is to facilitate the understanding
of challenges and needs and to provide visibility for recent
breakthroughs in underwater robotics. The achievement of this objective
will contribute to improving the state-of-the-art and to promoting
further advances in the area, as well as to open the way to new viable
applications.

In a specific formulation for the underwater environment or for
underwater applications, topics of interest include (but are not limited
to):

Vehicles and drones
Swarm of heterogeneous robotic agents
Cyber–physical systems
Manipulation
Robot sensing and communication
M/M interaction
Planning and mission control
Decision support and safe operation
Educational and recreational robotics
Applications (monitoring, mapping, search and rescue, mine
countermeasures, etc.)

*Guest Editors*: Prof. Dr. Marco Ceccarelli
*Deadline* for manuscript submissions: *30 June 2021*
https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/robotics_against_COVID-2019

The field of service robotics has developed considerably in recent
decades, including solutions in applications and utilities in medical
fields and especially in support of surgical medical activities. Today
more than ever, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the support of service
robotics can result, in many cases, in well-appreciated and consistent
help in the fight against the spread of the pandemic and, moreover, in
the treatment of patients in very critical conditions due to COVID-19.
However, the pandemic still requires considerable efforts from medical
personnel and technical support in order to solve critical situations in
intensive and sub-intensive care treatments as well as medical treatment
in non-hospital and even residential living situations. Service robotics
can contribute successfully to these challenges with innovative system
solutions and easier procedures for both medical operators and patients.
Therefore, in this Special Issue, the purpose of collecting papers
focused on service robotics helping in the fight against the COVID-19
pandemic is intended to give visibility and stimulus to solutions and
improvements of robotic service systems with performance suitable for
the assistance and support operations of patients and medical operators.

Papers are welcomed in all major areas of R&D and innovation in service
robotics helping to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and support treatments
against it, including topics such as medical robots and devices,
bio-inspired and cognitive robots, visual servicing of robot/human
motion and status, human–robot and human–human interactions, cloud
robotics for health care systems, and personal robots for patient care
assistance. The solicited topics are related to new theories, advanced
designs of robot mechanics and control architectures, and the
development of intelligent robotic applications in helping in the fight
against the COVID-19 pandemic. Potential topics include but are not
limited to the following:

novel design and applications of robotic system;
advanced robot control;

[UAI] [journals] CFP: Soft Machines: Integrating Sensing, Actuation and Computation published in /Robotics/

2018-06-14 Thread Linda Wang

Dear Colleagues,

Robotics is currently running a Special Issue entitled "Soft Machines:
Integrating Sensing, Actuation and Computation". Dr. Sina Naficy,
Dr. Michael P.M. Dicker and Prof. Jonathan M. Rossiter
are serving as Guest Editors for this issue. We think you
could make an excellent contribution based on your expertise.

Soft machines based on well-integrated sensors and actuators can
autonomously change their physical properties and interact with their
surroundings in an organic manner. Such machines hold a great potential
for biomedical devices, artificial limbs, and cooperative human
assistance. Realising this vision requires novel soft, smart hybrid
systems capable of sensing, computing, and actuation at micron-scale.
Tightly integrating actuation, sensing, and computation into one single
system can extend the functionality of traditional smart materials to
truly programmable soft machines. This goal can be achieved by: 1)
integrating sensing, actuation, and computation through novel smart
materials, 2) adapting new fabrication techniques capable of creating
hybrid, hierarchical structures

[UAI] [journals] CFP: Special Issue on "Space Robotics" - extended submission deadline 15 December 2018

2018-08-02 Thread Linda Wang

Dear Colleagues,

Robotics is currently running a Special Issue entitled "Space Robotics".
Prof. Dr. Alex Ellery, from Department of Mechanical & Aerospace
Engineering, Carleton University, is serving as Guest Editor for this
issue. We would like to invite you to prepare a research article or a
comprehensive review to be published in this special issue.

Space robotics has evolved from a mere addendum to the space exploration
programme to a fully-fledged strategic capability that leverages the
entire programme. Examples of the traditional concerns of space robotics
include on-orbit servicing using spacecraft-mounted manipulators,
terramechanics and autonomous navigation for planetary rovers and
robotic drilling mechanisms. More recently, autonomous science for
rovers has emerged as a capability for rovers to complement navigational
autonomy in rovers. Biomimetics also has a role to play in space
robotics such as in automated camera control for example. Some
traditional areas have evolved - on-orbit servicing capabilities are
being applied to space debris mitigation with new approaches such as
harpooning and netting. Recent interest in in-situ resource utilisation
(ISRU) specifically requires extensive robotics capabilities ranging
from asteroid and lunar mining, 3D printing (essentially Cartesian
robotics) and even self-replicating machines to leverage local resources
to reduce the costs of space exploration and for supporting lunar or
Martian bases...

[UAI] [journals] CFP: Special Issue on "Robotics in Extreme Environments" - Edited by Prof. Rustam Stolkin

2018-10-15 Thread Linda Wang

Dear Colleagues,

Robotics is currently running a Special Issue entitled "Robotics in
Extreme Environments". Prof. Rustam Stolkin, from Royal Society Industry
Fellow for Nuclear Robotics, University of Birmingham, is serving as
Guest Editor for this issue.

We are pleased to invite you to submit your papers to this Special Issue
of Robotics, "Robotics in Extreme Environments".

Extreme environments can be defined as those that are so hazardous that
it would be undesirable or impossible to send a human worker into the
environment. Such applications are of special importance to the robotics
research community, because they demand the use of robots and often
cannot be done at all without major new advances in robotics. In
contrast, while research on, e.g., household helper robots is certainly
interesting, such jobs can still be done by human workers if needed at
the present time...

[UAI] [journals] CFP: Special Issue on "Collaborative Mechatronics Systems"

2018-12-13 Thread Linda Wang

Dear Colleagues,

Robotics is currently running a Special Issue entitled "Collaborative
Mechatronics Systems". Prof. Dr. Wenjun (Chris) Zhang, from University
of Saskatchewan, Dr. Yingzi Lin, from Northeastern University, are
serving as Guest Editors for this issue.

We are pleased to invite you to submit your papers to this Special Issue
of Robotics, "Collaborative Mechatronics Systems".

Mechatronics systems are multi-disciplinary systems, and their operation
principles involve interactions of different principles in different
scientific domains, typically electric and mechanical domains. To
mechatronic systems that operate together with humans, human factors
become extremely important in terms of the ultimate task performance and
the safety of human operators. Mechatronic systems in this context are
called collaborative mechatronic systems. The key issues with
collaborative mechatronic systems are communication and cooperation with
human operators. More specifically, they are about how a mechatronic
system knows a human operator’s physical and mind state and how a
mechatronic system operates with a human operator to accomplish their
common goal while guaranteeing a high degree of safety and health to the
human operator.

[UAI] [Journals] - [Robotics] - call for paper - Special Issue "Advances and Challenges in Educational Robotics"

2019-11-08 Thread Linda Wang

Dear colleague,

We are pleased to invite you to contribute a paper to our Special Issue
"*Advances and Challenges in Educational Robotics*" in /Robotics/(ISSN
2218-6581). Both comprehensive review and original articles are welcome.

*Guest Editors*: Prof. Dr. Igor Verner and Prof. Dr. Christian Krägeloh
Special Issue Website:
https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/EducationalRobotics
*Deadline* for manuscript submissions: *30 June 2020*

Education is currently facing challenges to adapt and keep pace with the
fast-changing technological world. The radical digital transformation
and massive introduction of robots in industry and everyday life give
grounds to speak about the beginning of a new industrial revolution.
This matter necessitates novel pedagogies that will prepare people for
the deliberate use of the new technological systems and active
participation in their development. Therefore, it is urgent to
introduce, at all levels of education, teaching robotics and teaching
with robotics in ways that align with the current demands.

This Special Issue aims to present new innovative approaches to teaching
smart robotics and using robotic environments to enhance the learning of
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We solicit original
contributions which report on the development of robotic environments,
implementation of educational activities, and evidence-based evaluation
of their learning outcomes.

Of special interest are papers in which robotics activities combine
design and analysis and involve exploration of disruptive technologies
such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, virtual and
augmented realities, and 3D printing. Relevant to this Special Issue are
also contributions that explore acceptability and acceptance of
educational robots as well as other psychosocial aspects such as
opinions, perceptions, attitudes, or exploration of suitable
psychological outcome measures. The proposed approaches can target
formal or informal education in universities and schools and address
general, gifted, and special education students.

If you decide to contribute to this Special Issue, please inform us. The
Editorial Board of Robotics strives to ensure a rigorous and efficient
peer-review process for all manuscripts, in order to ensure high-quality
manuscripts are published in a timely manner (if accepted after the
peer-review process).

Robotics provides an advanced forum for studies related to all aspects
of robotics. It is covered by leading indexing services, including the
Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI—Web of Science), Scopus(citescore
1.53), nspec (IET) and DBLP Computer Science Bibliography, and other
databases.

/Robotics/ is fully open access. Open access (unlimited and free access
by readers) increases publicity and promotes more frequent citations, as
indicated by several studies. Open access is supported by the authors
and their institutes. An Article Processing Charge (APC) of CHF 1000

[UAI] [journals] Final Reminder (due 15 Dec): Special Issue on "Robotics in Extreme Environments"

2019-11-20 Thread Linda Wang

For further reading, please follow the link to the Special Issue Website
at: https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/REE.

The submission deadline is 15 December 2019. You may send your
manuscript now or up until the deadline. Submitted papers should not be
under consideration for publication elsewhere. We also encourage authors
to send a short abstract or tentative title to the Editorial
Office in advance (robot...@mdpi.com).

The Robotics is an online open access journal dedicated to both the
foundations of artificial intelligence, bio-mechanics and mechatronics,
and the real-world applications of robotic perception, cognition and
actions. The journal is presently covered by the following indexing:
Scopus(citescore 1.53), Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI - Web of
Science),Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), INSPEC (IET) and DBLP
Computer Science Bibliography.
