[techtalk] mass useradd
Hello all- Haven't been on the list in a while...hope everyone's doing well in their endeavors. I have what I hope is a quick question. I would like to know if there's a way (possible using perl/expect?) to add multiple users from a text file list all simultaneously. I figure I could either put the usernames and passwords in one file (deliminating them with commas, spaces, tabs, , whatever), or put the username list in one file and the password list in another. ex. User-pass-file.txt -- Brian f8lhwlv Jeff3jfh0w0 Tom 20jflwp OR User-file.txt - Brian Jeff Tom Password-file.txt - f8lhwlv 3jfh0w0 20jflwp Is there a built-in linux command to do this, or does anyone know of a good script? Thanks, Brian PS-I'm just now about to check out the Crimson Lust site...we'll see how it turns out...=) ___ techtalk mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linux.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/techtalk

Would anyone out > there be able to help me w/ this? licq is a bastard to install. When I last installed it (from source) it was a true horror and the licq.com website did not help me. You are looking for a Qt plugin. Check out ftp://ftp.licq.com/pub/licq/srcs/ Then look for licq_qt-gui-yourversion.tar.gz The reason licq won't go without it is that it doesn't know what gui to use to drive the program... it seems silly to me because the only one they *have* that works well *is* the Qt one, but they insist. The first time you run it be sure to run it from the command line and not from a menu or icon or anything, as I'm sure you've discovered it will tell you important stuff about your plugin, then it will ask for information on your icq number and such. :o) Try downloading and installing that. You might need some other nonsense with Qt that you don't have installed, also, licq's page says qt-devel-2.1.0 libstdc++-devel XFree86-devel if you're compiling from source. Alternatively, if you're using an rpm-based system, you might try using the rpms instead (hopefully they have improved since I tried to install from rpm). Get them from the licq source and not redhat though (unless they have been fixed, the ones from redhat do funky stuff). Skins and plugins are another joy. :o) > Also, when i run into downloading tar files... how do i... er... uncompress > them? I tried one thing and it didn't work as someone told me it should... Try: tar xvf file.tar or tar xzvf file.tar.gz If you need more specific instructions, you might go check out that website that sally posted. hth, -nicole ___ techtalk mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linux.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/techtalk
Re: [techtalk] mass useradd
i had a line in a script that went like echo "passwd for $pos: `/usr/bin/mkpasswd -l 8 -d 2 -c 2 -C 2 $pos`" >> $PASSWORDLIST you could put that in a for loop and have mkpasswd create and set the password at the same time, then spit the password out into a file so you know what mkapsswd decided on for each user. i'm not looking at this real carefully so write back personally if you need more context or clarity. if you already have the passwords that you need to use, i think that would be a job for expect, which i don't know. sowwy. > Hello all- > > Haven't been on the list in a while...hope everyone's doing well in their > endeavors. Re: [techtalk] licq
first, if you have the licq tarball (which I don't suspect you do, seeing as you don't know how to unpack tarballs) there should be a plugins directory inside the licq directory. to unpack tars, first, if it has a .gz (gnuzip) run gzip -d filename.tar.gz, if it has a .bz2 (it's a compression utility that uses a newer algorithem than gzip and compresses things to a much smaller size, but it takes quite a bit longer to uncompress, fittingly so) run bzip2 -d file.bz2. Then, run tar -xf file.tar. If you want to run Linux completely from the command line - no mouse, no windows - you can use CRTL-ALT-F1 to escape out of X-windows. The whole screen becomes one big shell. There's a set of virtual terminals - once you've escaped from the X-Windows terminal with CTRL-ALT-F1, ALT-F1 to ALT-F6 gives you access to each of the terminals. ALT-F7 returns you to the X-windows one. (Note1: Escaping from X-Windows isn't limited to CTRL-ALT-F1. You can use any of the virtual terminals - the critical thing is to use CTRL as well as ALT.) (Note2: ALT-F1 is the console, a special terminal. When programs break, messages often come up on the console. So knowing how to go look at it can be handy.) Re: [techtalk] licq
the easiest one line command for unzipping/untarring a tar.gz file that I've found would be "tar -zxf source.tar.gz" if you want to actually see what it's untarrring, add a v in there something like "tar -zxvf source.tar.gz" that will uncompress and untar your file in one command, and anytime you can cut-down the risk factors for CTS, I say do it. as for the plugin problem, my version of licq (0.81) came with a plugins/ directory in the initial tarball and it actually told me after I installed the licq binary to go to plugins/qt-gui (you should already be in the licq source directory if you just compiled and isntalled it, that's where the plugins/ directory is) and read the INSTALL text file, which pretty much tells you to run ./configure; make; make install, the same as you did with licq. that's how it worked with version 0.81, and I've been running that for a while so I imagine if you don't have the same version, the install hasn't changed much in the newer versions. [techtalk] sound question (kind of long)
I didn't realize till after I wrote this how long winded I got towards the end. Sorry if I'm wasting a lot of bandwidth. I was hoping I could have solved this on my own, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for help. I've had a soundcard installed in my machine since I built it, but only within the past few weeks have I gotten over my laziness (and fear) of trying to get it to work. So I'll start out with the stats of the machine: Motherboard: ABIT BP6 Soundcard: Soundblaster PCI128 OS: RedHat 6.1, kernel 2.2.16 Now, I have all of the PCI slots available to me (I have a ISA network card and an AGP video card). I know the SBPCI128 is the same as the Ensoniq AudioPCI 1370/1371 (this one is new enough that I'm pretty sure it's a 1371). I tried using OSS (which supports the card) and it tells me I have it on an IRQ with another device. I check during boot-up at the BIOS output an sure enough the Multimedia device is on IRQ 11, along my "Mass Storage Device" (I imagine the vacant HPT366 controller). So I muck around in the BIOS for about a half-hour, trying to change the IRQ of the PCI slot to one that's not taken. I can't get that to work so I take the case off and just switch slots to get a different IRQ. Now when the machine boots, it says the multimedia device is on IRQ 5. I don't see anytyhing else in the BIOS output that says it would conflict with another device on IRQ 5, so I figure everything's hunky-dory. When I boot linux, I don't get any errors, but when I run OSS I still don't have any sound. Go into the OSS config and make sure IRQ 5 isn't disabled (ironically, the default is to disable IRQ 3, 4, and 5, with a comment that 3 and 4 are usually used for the mouse, but nothing about why IRQ 5 is disabled). After playing with OSS on and off for an hour, I say to myself "Self, didn't I see Ensoniq AudioPCI drivers in the kernel config when I upgraded to the 2.2.16 kernel?" "Why yes, I certainly did, lets get rid of this bolluxed OSS, it's more trouble than it's worth." So I recompile the kernel a few times with different Sound options (Sound built in/Ensoniq drivers as modules, Sound and Ensoniq drivers built in, Sound and Ensoniq drivers compiled as modules, etc.) I play with these options a few different ways to test, but nothing seems to work. Currently I have all of the Sound options compiled as modules (so I could use the super-cool sndconfig utility) , and I see it detect on startup and assign IRQs and DMAs and start the mixer, et. al. Still no sound. This bring me to the whole point of this message. My next guess would be trying to assign a different IRQ in the BIOS and see how that works, and if I can't get it reassigned through the BIOS, the next step would be to switch PCI slots again. I guess I was just hoping someone might be able to give me a little hint of something else I could do, some mundane detail I might have missed, or maybe give me a better picture of the BIOS specs so I can set the right IRQ there rather than having to move the card. Once again, sorry I got so long winded, but I've always been told more details are better than less, and probably saved a few people from asking questions about what all I've tried. ___ techtalk mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linux.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/techtalk

How do I create a "shortcut like" icon on the KDE desktop? 2 How do I cause the system to see all 128M of memory? I've tried mem=128 on the command line for GRUB, but to no avail. 3. Is there a better, more functional and polished, browser to use other than Netscape? Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the help!
