If you want to run Linux completely from the command line - no mouse, no
windows - you can use CRTL-ALT-F1 to escape out of X-windows. The whole
screen becomes one big shell.
There's a set of virtual terminals - once you've escaped from the
X-Windows terminal with CTRL-ALT-F1, ALT-F1 to ALT-F6 gives you access
to each of the terminals.
ALT-F7 returns you to the X-windows one.
(Note1: Escaping from X-Windows isn't limited to CTRL-ALT-F1. You can
use any of the virtual terminals - the critical thing is to use CTRL as
well as ALT.)
(Note2: ALT-F1 is the console, a special terminal. When programs break,
messages often come up on the console. So knowing how to go look at it
can be handy.)
