My apology Neil but you will have seen that I recognised my mistake once I had hit the button and ensured that on the UK list, which is the one I was aiming at in particular, I did ensure that the error was corrected. - Original Message - From: "Neil Barnfather - TalkNav" To: "Talks Mailing List" Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2011 8:08 AM Subject: Re: [Talks] Looking to upgrade, could do with some help please. Re: [Talks] Nokia Accessibility & Maps - Commentary
I agree whole heartedly with that statement Neil. I would much prefer to carry on using My rather Laborious Nokia E5 over using an Apple Iphone. Prodoctivity would be the main reason here and I don't know how anyone would be able to dial numbers when connected to an banking automated system. I could just about manage this with Mobile Speak in keypad mode but never achieved it with Talks. I did however look at the I-pod Touch yesterday for the first time and have to say that the Voice Over sound quality is not good enough to hear in a outdoor environment. I was traveling back from Hereford yesterday as I went there for the football and I really struggled to hear the Voice Over on my friends I-pod Touch. I would still consider purchasing one for media usage at home. Original message: although not directly Talks related, it is in fact a defence of Talks and indeed this way of doing things. iPhone gets a lot of praise for a good number of reasons, firstly, yes, there's a lot of apps which work out of the box, and these can genuinely make your life easier. next up, their products, i mean Apple's, are very nice to the touch and you get a feeling of being the owner of a modern, sleek, stylish bit of kit when you own one. but, you need to keep in mind, Apple have a very good way of franchising their users, almost turning their users into a massive marketing machine working for them, you rarely here and Apple device owner slatting it, or even coming close to making any form of disparaging remark about it. does this mean that they are perfect or the route ahead, possibly, but not necessarily. do I own one, yes, for the reasons expected, no... So why buy an APple i device, the apps really has to be the thing, does this mean you need an iPhone, no, do it cheaper and get an iPod Touch, more storage room, finner design and cheaper both at the outset and long term. why not get an iPHone, the audio quality during a call is in my experience worse than a Nokia and other devices, all the iPhone's I have owned, now up at 7 of them, resinate when using the internal ear piece during calls when at the top 3 volume settings. the microphone also does a poorer job at sound reproduction than say a Nokia. Voice Over for all its benefits of being so to speak free and right there on day one aren't quite true now are they. a new iPhone 4 with 32Gb of memory will set you back a small fortune on the first day, then quite a bit more than a basic phone tariff there after for 24 months. do you need all the network carrier chucks in there, probably not, but you have no choice. on the other hand, a basic Nokia or even a pretty dam good one can be bought invariably for less, even with a 32Gb memory card, then you can opt for a SIM card only tariff on a package that suits you. even throwing in a full copy of Talks, you are miles better off. this is when free doesn't mean free. I would argue that Voice Over is not free, but included in the price, there is a big difference in this statement. Do not get me wrong folks, I congratulate Apple for doing this for our community, think it is an excellent product, but it does lack many of the features of say Talks or Mobile Speak, is difficult to use tone menu systems in calls owing to the call volume not dipping below that of Voice Over, and other problems, of course Apple could fix these, but for now, my view is the Touch is a better choice than the iPhone itself. its just a view, but as I see more and more people thinking the iPhone will solve their problems, i think its fair and wise to point out some of these things before folk jump simply as Apple people seem to drink the cool ade a little to much for my liking. I do not wish to move this list away from Talks, so can I just point out that this above remark is strictly in the context of helping folk to make an informed thought process over Talks / Ms / Voice Over. [Talks] C5 and Talks Volume
Interesting issues raised by Saqib. I would like to add that on my C5 the Talks volume is very low or else I have suddenly suffered a severe hearing loss. I have to have the volume on maximum (10) when out and then can only hear it with all the other environmental sounds. Very disappointing. Re: [Talks] Nokia Accessibility & Maps - Commentary
I don't think I suggested that Voiceover was free on Apple products. It is clearly included in the cost of the product but, there is equity in that anyone buying an Apple product pays the same. I am very aware that Apple lock you into their services and products and to be honest... Over all, I just prefer Nokia, all I can do with it, the response of Talks when using it etc. But, it is inevitable that people are going to consider the jump from one platform where things seem to be going backwards to one where they seem to be moving forwards and weighing up the pro's and con's on either side in the process. Supply and demand? The more immediate thing on this thread though was Nokia and lack of accessibility to their products in a stand alone sense and their seeming to illude to their accessibility by default when they use people with a visual impairment to advertise some or all of the phones merrits. One of the question I've started asking people when they start talking about the IPhone is I ask them how they are going to use the device. If they are going to primary make phone calls on it, then I tell them to look at Nokia and Talks. If they want to use it for entertainmend and make very few phone calls on it, then the IDevice may be good for them. So if you use your phone for phone functions mainly! Re: [Talks] Nokia Accessibility & Maps - Commentary
Hi, Neil! Only problem is: Can''t download it to the phone from Nokia. Ovi and PC Suite aren't accessible to do this. Would rather be able to download the maps I need to use. That way, if cell coverage is spotty, but GPS not, I can still navigate and not depend on being online.--Matthew Chao At 01:00 AM 2/27/2011, you wrote: Can I just clarify, to the very best of my knowledge, Nokia's OVI Maps only goes online to calculate a route as and when your route travels outside of a currently none downloaded map area. so for example, if you have downloaded London, and travel from anywhere in the Capital to somewhere in the Capital, the entire routing is done on the phone and you could do that route in off line mode, meaning no cell coverage. the only time OVI Maps requires the internet is when your route goes outside a currently downloaded area, and at which time, certianly this used to be the case, OVI would auto download the map area required for that element of the journey. Re: [Talks] n 8
Talks is working fine with N8 but with some side issue. 1. at beginning, you must at least get a sighted help for customizing the new homescreen. as a talks user, you will encounter problem like: *adding or removing widgets from the homescreen. *adding or removing shortcut bar on the homescreen. but after the shortcut bar is added, you can easily add or remove icons by yourself. * need a sighted guide to tell you which homescreen page you are located and get you to understand more to the structure on the homescreen. you can delete any of the 3 homescreen page if you doesn't need that much of shortcuts or widgets on the homescreen. you can readded when you need it in the future. * afther you added shortcuts at the shortcut widget, you must lable those icons manually as talks will only recognize them as "icon". overall, Talks 5.20 is working very fine in N8. if anyone of you need to know more about N8, you can write to me offlist or if wanted to share to the list, just ask on the list if the list owner allow it. -- Allan (WKF) - Original Message - From: gerry cook To: talks Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2011 14:23 Subject: [Talks] n 8 I've been offered an n 8 by vodafone does it work ok with talks and the touch screen? ___ Talks mailing list Talks@talksusers.com http://lists.talksusers.com/mailman/listinfo/talks Hosting of this list provided courtesy of: eHosting Limited: http://www.ehosting.com/ and Talknav Inc. http://www.talknav.net/

Re: [Talks] n 8
Stephen, that's exactly what I say to people, Apple iOS devices are for consumption, if you're listening to music, watching TV movies, reading e-mail etc, then Voice Over and an iOS device are perfect, if you wish to do a fair share of input, tex messaging, e-mail writing etc, then a more traditional Nokia with Talks / MS is probably a more suited solution. Re: [Talks] C5 and Talks Volume
It is only if you plug it into your PC and you have a later copy of PC Suite it may alert you that there is a UPDATE for your phone. I would suggest at this time, that you not update the firmware if given this notification for the C5. Depending on where you buy the C5 from, it may not have had the firmware udpated on it. In saying the above, if you want the latest OVI Maps and some things like that, then you may not have the choice if you want those functions accept to upgrade the firmware. I noted that last Autust/September. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought the Talks volume on this pone took a big drop in volume. But this isn't a Talks issue, it is a firmware issue from Nokia. The C5 is a nice small cheep phone is you can still find it, But I in most cases will not suggest people get it. I would like to add that on my C5 the Talks volume is very low or else I have suddenly suffered a severe hearing loss. I have to have the volume on maximum (10) when out and then can only hear it with all the other environmental sounds. Very disappointing. Guess it is not a Talks issue but a C5 one. ___ Talks mailing list Talks@talksusers.com http://lists.talksusers.com/mailman/listinfo/talks Hosting of this list provided courtesy of: eHosting Limited: http://www.ehosting.com/ and Talknav Inc. http://www.talknav.net/ ___ Talks mailing list Talks@talksusers.com http://lists.talksusers.com/mailman/listinfo/talks Hosting of this list provided courtesy of: eHosting Limited: http://www.ehosting.com/ and Talknav Inc. http://www.talknav.net/ ___ Talks mailing list Talks@talksusers.com http://lists.talksusers.com/mailman/listinfo/talks Hosting of this list provided courtesy of: eHosting Limited: http://www.ehosting.com/ and Talknav Inc. http://www.talknav.net/ ___ Talks mailing list Talks@talksusers.com http://lists.talksusers.com/mailman/listinfo/talks Hosting of this list provided courtesy of: eHosting Limited: http://www.ehosting.com/ and Talknav Inc. http://www.talknav.net/

Re: [Talks] Looking to upgrade, could do with some help please.
thanks for that useful info. I really like the spec list for the N8, especially as there now seems to also be a 32gb version of it, but the problems people are having over this home screen issue does concirn me a bit, as I get hardly any access to any form of sighted assistance, that I could use for sorting out issues like those mentioned on the list. The E7 could have been in the running, but doesn't seem to have any memory card slot, is this right? Simon, With Nokia phones running Talks, significant memory is achieved by inputting a large memory card and not per say by internal memory. in general a 32Gb memory card is quite easily and cheaply obtainable for these phones, and I'm sure that the newer ones can even take the 64Gb cards. now looking at feature packed phones which support Talks: N8, C7 or E7, I don't have the specs here off hand, but if you go to the Nokia site, these are only three phones, and shouldn't take that long to review. they are all Nokia's latest offerings and all run Talks. However, there doesn't seem to be an up to date list of talks phones, and the one I did find is now next to useless, as it just gives model numbers, but has no specs/features listings, which I could really do with to make an informed choice. Re: [Talks] Instal help required!
I put Tallks on the memory card. I knew it was last on list of memory card. Then I had shortcut key set to left arrow by sighted person, had date and time put correctly and then I knew how to install by pressing the select key a few times. I know people do all this without any sight but I always need that little bit of sighted help. - Original Message - From: To: Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2011 6:12 PM Subject: [Talks] Instal help required! Re: [Talks] Nokia Accessibility & Maps - Commentary
thats correct. Data connection is only require when ovi map itself can't find maps info or route info on the phone memory or memory card. - Original Message - From: "Neil Barnfather - TalkNav" To: "Talks Mailing List" Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2011 2:00 PM Subject: Re: [Talks] Nokia Accessibility & Maps - Commentary Can I just clarify, to the very best of my knowledge, Nokia's OVI Maps only goes online to calculate a route as and when your route travels outside of a currently none downloaded map area. so for example, if you have downloaded London, and travel from anywhere in the Capital to somewhere in the Capital, the entire routing is done on the phone and you could do that route in off line mode, meaning no cell coverage. the only time OVI Maps requires the internet is when your route goes outside a currently downloaded area, and at which time, certianly this used to be the case, OVI would auto download the map area required for that element of the journey. On whether it's worth the bother for us to write to Nokia, I'd only say that if we don't make our opinions known then there's no way we'll make any headway in getting more accessibility into newer phones and applications.
