Re: [RBW] Re: Wheel Builder
Hi--I recently splurged on an Onyx for my new Sam, and it is kind of life changing (my *riding* life anyway) how awesome it is. Which is good and bad, as now my other bicycles with very quiet vintage Deore hubs seem "loud". In terms of finding a local wheel builder--maybe not exactly the answer you're looking for, but I taught myself to lace wheels a number of years ago and it was really not nearly as difficult as I initially thought it would be. Each wheel build gets easier than the previous, and it has now become meditative even. And its way cheaper as you can shop around for your own parts, either buying direct from manufacturer or finding stuff on eBay. I feel like a lot of folks here gravitate towards nice components. For wheels in particular: nice hubs, nice rims, quality spokes (in exactly the correct length)...I've found that gets you like 75% of the way towards building a strong and true wheel. [RBW] Re: "You need 7 bikes" article
Hi All, I noticed that in this little blurb, Grant never said "need"--just "how many"--And if you think about it, it matches up pretty well with the current Riv lineup: a beater: Clem a bomber: Gus/Susie a single speed: Quickbeam / Frank Jones (not current but let's roll with it) a touring bike: AHH (or Atlantis, or Appaloosa, or Sam, or...) a lightish road bike: Roadini / Roadeo a do-all racked and bagged bike: Atlantis / Appaloosa (or Clem or Sam or Platypus or...) a mixte: Platypus (or Clem) a loaner: Sam (I dunno, seems like a good loaner bike as its so versatile) a work in progress: what is the current WIP Riv model? Not perfect matches, but works for me. Anyway, that's how I interpreted the blurb. [RBW] Nitto R-14 Rear Struts Attachment Points
To all the lighter duty rear rack users out there, The Nitto R14 rack has rear struts that allow for connection to 2 and even 3 possible locations on some Riv frames, and I am curious which ones others use or prefer and why? This question applies to those running the RBW51 or M1 as a rear rack, too. I see installations that use the upper dropout eyelets, others the lower hourglass brazeons on seat stays, and some the mid stay hourglass brazeons. Does anyone’s preference vary on different frame models, or even different frame sizes? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: New Sam Color
I really like the new color and the look of the fenders. I saw those fenders when I was at RBWHQ last Sept and thought they were great. The appeared thicker than the standard SKS and the cream color looked to be the actual color of the fender, not paint. Nice that they're longer. [RBW] Thoughts and experiences with 48cm Noodles?
I'm planning on putting together a touring/camping bike this year and kicking around the idea of using 48cm Noodle handlebars. I've been using the 46s for years now and love them but when touring on them there have been times when I found myself wishing they were a tad wider, especially when climbing. I'm 6' and broad shouldered. I have a feeling the perceived drawbacks to using them are more mental and cosmetic. What are folks experiences with using them? Last year I sold my Rambouillet frame with the intention of using the funds for a Hunqapillar or maybe a Hillborne. I've taken my time in trying to make a decision and am starting to lean more towards an LHT. Yes, a far lesser bike but very capable and something I'm more inclined to feel comfortable locking up around town. I'd probably get a 60cm frame with the 26" wheels so with 48cm bars it would certainly be an odd looking bike but probably very practical. Who knows though, those new pictures of the SH really have the wheels in my head spinning. And I do like to support RBW. [RBW] Re: Thoughts and experiences with 48cm Noodles?
I ride a 63cm Hilsen which fits great and a 64cm QB which is a tad big. I've ridden a friend's 62cm LHT (700c version) but it just didn't feel right. It felt a bit big. I've ridden a 60cm LHT briefly and it felt fine. There's more post showing than on a Riv but the HT on the LHT is tall and the TT has a 2 degree slope so I think I'll be able to get the bars where I want them. I had moustache bars on my Rambouillet briefly and while I liked them for climbing they felt horrible for descending. Very sketchy and just not right. I saw the Nitto DD bars at American Cyclery when I was in SF. They were on a Soma Saga. Although I rode the Saga only briefly I'd probably stick with Noodles. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Thoughts and experiences with 48cm Noodles?
I've got Albatross bars on my commuter and they're perfect for that. In fact, they're probably the most perfect bar ever for around town. I wouldn't want to ride them for anything over 20 miles although I know others have. Also, on descents it just doesn't feel right, way too upright. That's just me. At some point I'll put the Albatross bars on my QB. Watch, I'll try the 48s, love them and then swap out all the bars on all my bikes. I'll never ride anything narrower than 46cm. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. That's pretty funny Ray. I've been in a similar spot since selling my Rambouillet frame. Part of me just wishes I had pulled the trigger on a new frame back in Dec when I sold the Ram. Instead I've been saving up more and going back and forth between various bikes--Hunqa, SH, Big Dummy, LHT, Troll etc. I'm just trying to fill a camping/touring hole in my collection. Eventually I'll make a decision. Whatever I decide I'm sure I'll be happy. One thing I can't stress enough... I'm really glad I have my Hilsen. Uggh, what a sufferfest. 200k of rain, heavy legs, rain, wind, rain, cold, more rain, some sun, and still more rain for the final 4 miles or so. The Hilsen was fine although I'll probably do my next brevet with Jack Brown greens. I rode today's brevet on Schwalbe Marathon Supremes (35s) and while they're nice they're just not my tire of choice for brevets. I think JB greens or Paselas (32s) are the way to go. I'm cooked. [RBW] Re: Today's brevet.
I really tapered off riding after Oct and have pretty much refused to ride in the rain if I could avoid it so my base miles are off. Last weekend I crammed by riding my Quickbeam last week. I did a 30 mile flat ride Sat, 30 mile mixed terrain ride on Sun and then a 100k, mainly flat, ride out to the gorge on Mon. I think it just kind of left me tired more than anything else. Also, this was my fourth time doing the Birkie and my umpteenth time doing a variation of this ride so I think I was a little bored. I'm still planning on improving my times for the 400k and 600k this year which could happen. For the last 30 miles of the ride my friend Joshua and I kept talking about how next year will be the year for touring and camping. We kept making jokes about how if we were touring we could just stop and pitch camp off the side of the road. I do think I may take a break from randonneuring next year or ride some different events. But then again, I think the Cascade 1200k may be happening next year and I've always wanted to do that so who knows. For the moment, I'll enjoy some afternoon coffee, a book (You Are Not A Gadget), and a movie later today with my wife. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Tire size question... don't know where else to ask it.
There was a time when I thought BFs were absolutely ridiculous but then, as with Rivendells, I took another look at them with an open mind and now am really intrigued by them. Last year I was heading home from a ride and started talking with a fellow who has toured extensively on one. Although the conversation was brief he kind of sold me on them. Photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/4604952537/ I'm a lot taller than this guy though and wonder how BFs handle and fit for people with SH's of 80cm. I've also been following this BF tourer's photo thread on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/moralinefree/5511909015/ He's rolling fully loaded over some serious terrain. The bikes seem quite functional. Yeah, this thread is a bit off topic, but who cares, it's not about helmets and at it's heart it's in the spirit of Rivish things. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Today's brevet.
Kevin, I should be at 3 Capes unless the weather is super dismal. It'll be my 4th time doing it so I don't feel like I'm missing anything if skip it. I just haven't been getting enough rides in. Seems like all the dry days are when I'm working. Two of the last three editions of 3 Capes have been rescheduled due to snow in the coast range. I wonder if that'll happen this year. I think 3 Capes would be doable on a track bike. 2 of the Capes are pretty steep but the roads are usually quiet enough where you can traverse the road if it gets too much. The climb up and over the coast range is pretty tame and the climb back from Pacific City is nothing. Do say hi at the start if you're there. If I'm there. I'll be on the Hilsen although this will probably be the last brevet on it as my rando bike is back from the painters and waiting to get built-up. [RBW] Re: What's your freewheel preference?
I run the standard front rings (40/32) and an 18t FW. A few months back I purchased an IRD FW through Soma. It really nice and a bit cheaper than the White Industries FW. I rarely flip the wheel or adjust the gearing. In fact, I've only used the 32t ring once. I climb through Forest Park in 40-18 no problem and even did the 14 mile climb to the top of Larch Mountain in that gearing and it was fine. http://store.somafab.com/irdsispfr.html My rear hub is a Surly fixed/free. I have an 18t fixed cog on it. I've used that once for a 30 mile ride. I'm not a fan of riding fixed. I can see how it might be great for climbing but otherwise, just too much of a pain in the ass for the way I like to ride. And yes, I probably should have gone with a 16t cog or smaller but really, it's a moot point because regardless of the cog size I won't be ridding fixed anytime soon. --mike On Mar 22, 6:36 am, jandrews_nyc wrote: > So, after reading these posts, I'm sensing that it's best to not "over > gear" this bike. (no biggie there really) You're right there Kelly. I bet the tall Berthoud bag and a Berthoud decauler would work fine for you on a big bike. I really think it's a bad idea for a taller person to get a small HB bag like the one VO sells. The Berthoud bags are great quality and work well when set-up properly. The Berthoud decauler would work well for you if the bag is below the HB a few centimeters. I've used the VO decauler and it might not work as well for you depending on your set-up http://www.renehersebicycles.com/NPP%20Bags.htm My 63cm Hilsen with the largest Berthoud bag: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/3585988020/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/4510673877/in/set-72157613195465589/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/3419940264/in/set-72157613195465589/ Berthoud bag mounted on my Rambouillet (sold) with VO decauler: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/4251858375/in/set-72157613195345103/ It might be hard to see in this photo but mounting the bag was a bit tricky because of the length of the stem and position of the decauler. [RBW] Yesterday's 300k
So yesterday was my fourth time riding the 3 Capes 300k and it was quite fun. This will probably be my last brevet on my Hilsen as my custom rando bike will be on the road soon. The Hilsen seemed to really shine in yesterday's configuration. I reinstalled my Berthoud fenders as the forecast was for rain all day. For luggage I used a Sackville XS SaddleSack stuffed with 2 tubes, tools, 2 ProBars, spare socks and gloves. I also had my jersey pockets stuffed with food and vest and rain jacket at times. I love this route and in spite of the cold and rainy start I felt great as we rolled out of Forest Grove. My Joshua and I held back a bit at the start so as not to get caught up in the front towing the line something which I've tended to do in the past. As we went over the coast range I felt great and had a great descent down the other side and into Tillamook. Usually in Tillamook I use Safeway as a control which is always a huge timesuck. Instead I got my brevet card signed at a Shell station and back on the road quickly. The 3 Capes that we go up and down are absolutely regardless of the weather but I always tend to unravel at some point while climbing them. On the approach to Cape Meares I flatted. Of course it then started to rain but the tube change was quick and without issue. Climbing up Cape Meares and Lookout went well. I was feeling super strong but was definitely challenged by the steep grades. Fortunately I had no cramps and while going up Lookout I just kept telling myself "This climb never ends" so I was quite happy to finally go over the top. In year's past I've been fooled by the multiple false summits on the climb. I managed to catch two riders towards the top of Cape Lookout and rode with them into Pacific City. Like Safeway in Tillamook, Pacific City can be a huge time suck and I had planned on just getting my card signed and rolling out quickly. But I needed real food and so ordered a roast beef sandwich that I inhaled. As I was leaving a group of friend's rolled up and I told them I'd see them in Grand Ronde in anticipation of slowing down as I climbed up and over Sourgrass Summit. Sure enough I lost contact with my two companions and just sorta noodled up to the summit of Sourgrass Summit. It's a mellow climb at river grade. I wasn't feeling quite right but instantly felt better after taking a leak at the top. Not sure what it was about that but I just felt better. I stopped in Grand Ronde to enjoy a Coke and soon enough friends from Joshua and friends from Seattle rolled up. We only had like 50 miles or so back into Forest Grove over rolling back roads. We had an amazing tailwind that pushed us along these roads. Unfortunately Joshua fell off the back. Still, it was just too hard not to utilize the tailwind to our advantage and pick-up the pace. We were rolling along at like 20mph with little effort. About 25 miles from the finish we stopped at a mini-mart in Dalton to fuel up for the ride to the finish. Cokes, Pop-Tarts, corndogs and other processed food were happily devoured. The last 25 miles in were great. We all continued to feel great and weren't discouraged in the least by the seemingly never-ending rollers into Forest Grove. We were also happy to make it in just under 14hrs--13hrs 59 minutes. It was a great ride, much better than the 200k a few weeks ago. The Hilsen performed exceptionally. I really liked the set-up I had. Still, I managed to overpack. I didn't need the extra socks and gloves. While it was very wet and cold during parts of the ride the sun popped out here and there along the ride and I was never caught in any major downpours as other riders apparently were. Now it's time to pedal to work. I feel a pleasant fatigue and am looking forward to the 600k later in the year. I'll do the 400k in a few weeks but it's not a ride or distance I really enjoy. If I could, I'd rather ride two 600ks and use one of them for my 400k towards my Super Randonneur award but I can't squeeze a second 600k into my schedule. Perhaps the new bike will help make the 400k a little more enjoyable. A few pictures from the ride: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/sets/72157626363581246/with/5563934539/ These were taken with my phone but my plan is to have a real digital camera by the time of the 400k. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: How are those winter projects coming?
Some of my winter projects are dragging out to spring projects. I sold my Rambouillet last Nov with the intention of replacing it with a Hunqa or Hillborne. Also, a friend offered to build me a dedicated rando frame at a price I couldn't refuse. The idea was to use parts from the Rambouillet for that. The Hunqa or Hillborne would have been built up with other parts I had laying around. In the end I used money from the sale of the Rambouillet to upgrade some parts for the rando frame and pass on the Hunqa for an LHT. I picked up the rando frame yesterday and it's beautiful... unfortunately I decided to use the new VO high flange hubs for the wheels. The hubs are actually fine, what's not fine is the damned IRD 6spd FW. Already the thing is giving me grief! It's not immediately engaging always. At one point it was even freewheeling in both directions. No good. And this doesn't instill confidence for me. It's unfortunate, because on the 10 mile noodle around town on the bike yesterday I really really liked the gearing--VO cranks 46/30 and a 6spd 13-28 FW. I also have a few minor tweaks to make to the set-up with regard to fit. I may need to go with a tad shorter stem but I need to get out for some rides first. I will say that I can see the advantage of a low trail bike with front bag yet it does feel very different than my Hilsen which I've been riding for the past 3yrs. Furthermore... I had ordered up the LHT frame 2 weeks ago. It arrived, was prepped by the shop and the other day I dropped off parts to have it built up. I got a call from the shop yesterday saying the frame is defective and they'll have to order up a new one. Not really a big deal but I had cannabalized the Hilsen a bit to make the LHT happen figuring I could get the Hilsen back on the road a little later. And today is the OR Randonneurs 400k which I decided to sit out mainly due to a poor forecast and I just don't like the course which is very flat, kinda boring and takes in some sections of roads I'm just not comfortable riding on late at night. Yet I do have a twinge of regret as the weather is looking okay. I'll still do the 600k and maybe try to do a 400k later this year so that I can still earn an SR award. All in all though, the need to get a freewheel warrantied and a new bike dialed in along with waiting another 1.5 weeks to get yet another bike on the road really isn't a big deal in the scheme of things. I've been riding my QB a ton and so will most likely ride that this weekend if I can't get the freewheel issue resolved. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: How are those winter projects coming?
Yeah, I hear you Steve. I've been following that VO blog post. I sure do like that gearing but I may need to move back to an 8spd cassette for piece of mind. I'd hate to be out in the middle of nowhere and have the FW crap out on me. I've never had a cassette fail. Still, I really wanted the FW to work, the gearing combo is great. Harris Cyclery no longer sells 8spd Sheldon Brown Century Special cassettes. I may have to look into making my own. Here's a picture of the rando frame: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/5619870885/ It's got Rivish parts on it--Nitto bars, stem and post and Sliver shifters. Hubs, cranks, bb, and fenders (modified) are VO. Oh, and Newbaum's tape although I need to rewrap them. I'm not a fan of the wrapping style. I may redo the brake cables too. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Yeah, I tend to agree. I don't mind the double TT but if you're gonna overbuild it why not just make it more rack/load friendly? [RBW] Re: IRD Defiant cranksets
Compass Bicycles (BQ affilated bicycle components) may be doing some kind of crank in the future which I imagine will be a wide-range double. I the VO 50.4 crank on my new rando bike and it's great. I was pretty happy with a 46/34 double set-up but 46/30 is so much better. As I mentioned in another thread my 6 spd FW crapped out so I replaced it with a 7spd which seems fine. Once I get the 6spd warrantied I'll put that back on and hopefully have no more trouble. But man, the 46/30 front paired with the 6spd 13-28 FW and friction shifters really seems to be the ideal drivetrain set-up for me. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Dude, I doubt people looking at $6k carbon bikes are the target audience for this bike anyway. [RBW] Re: New Simple One frame
The latest word is that this first batch, at least will have Canti/V brake mounts and NOT have the cream head tube. Sounded mostly like some communication issues between Taiwan and Walnut Creek. It would not surprise me if any subsequent batches go back to sidepull. I asked about that during a visit in early March. I was told sidepulls are simpler to set up so were chosen keeping with the "simple" theme. I have a frame on order and was slightly bummed as I had already bought a pair of sidepulls to use. Those brakes have already found a home on a winter project, so I'm fine with the switch. I had a slight preference to canti in the first place. Looking forward to getting the frame. I'm mostly building from the parts bin, but there are one or two more things to aquire. I'll probably wait to have the frame in hand before I buy those parts. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Erik, are you using FW on all your bikes? You might try looking for Suntour FWs through this: http://bike.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/bike.cgi?cat=bik&fil=freewheel&itm=suntour&state=&ps=&pe=&ys=&ye=&so=d&submit=+GO+ I've been tempted to purchase a ST Winner FW after having an IRD crap out on me pretty much out of the box. I know VO is considering selling a FW but I'm sure it's a way off and there's no guarantee it'll be any better than the IRD ones. Hell, it'll probably be an IRD one branded as a VO. Or not. Most likely, the wheel I'm using on my rando bike will be moved to my commuter and I'll just switch back to a cassette hub. [RBW] Re: WTB: NOS Suntour Freewheel, or other High Quality Freewheel: 32,34, or 36t preferred
Just saw this on the VO blog: The Freewheel- After about 1500 miles of testing the first one started making a clicking noise. We took it apart to find lot of wear, grit inside, and a bad ball bearing. If this is the best freewheel made in Taiwan, as I was told, then we're very disappointed. It's no better than any of the current offering. To make it right it would need proper seals, better bearings, larger pawls, etc. On the bright side, the cogs still looked great. Next time I'm in Taiwan I'll see how much it would cost to make the needed improvements, but I'm pretty sure that the tooling costs will be prohibitive. http://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2011/04/few-updates.html -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. This seems to have become a more general handlebar topic which makes sense, because nearly all of what you'd say about the S-1 and bars would apply to Hunqua or Betty as well. I've ridden the S1 prototype at Riv (march this year) and a Bomba a couple of years ago (one of the parallel top tube models, nice bike!). I've always had drop bar bikes, but really really like drop bars that are set on the high side. Keep the tops high enough to be comfy and the drops low enough that your strongest thigh muscles kick in for climbing. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: bars for a simpleone?
I've had a S-one on order since January. I'm 183 cm tall, 91 cm PBH, 62 frame coming. I will almost certainly put drop bars on this bike. At least for its first fitting. I have a used Nitto that's narrow on top, flared at the bottom that will be the first fit attempt. I'm currently trying out a Nitto B-617 U-shape flat bar on another bike. It's a maybe. These bars are pretty narrow, so need to be kind of high to not whack my knees. Maybe just a longer stem would be the answer. I'm part way liking them so far. I like bars and positions on the bars that let my palms mostly face each other that's why I'm trying the 617. When I ride drops, I usually am on the top part of the bends. Albatross bars are pretty nice too, I have them on a mid-80s Stumpjumper. Palms facing down like straight bars, or the Jitensha Studios flat bar (haven't tried it!) are usually not my favorite. I keep thinking I might like one of them with a spherical bar-end of some kind that I've never seen. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Eric, great video. That's tough riding through the night. Well done on finishing your SR series. Are you confirmed for PBP? I'm curious, in the video you mention collecting receipts at controls, don't you guys use brevet cards and just get them signed at the open controls? Do you guys use info controls? I did the Oregon Randonneurs Coastal 600k this weekend, we had 13 controls, 5 of which were info controls. It sure looks like you folks had nice weather. Our weather wasn't bad by Oregon standards but still there was a lot of rain and a lot wind. At our overnight control I slept for 5hrs. I probably could have slept less but I don't really like riding at night. I got into the over- night control soaking wet and very hungry at 11pm. After food and a shower I was asleep by midnight and back on the road by 5:30am. Perhaps if it hadn't been so wet and windy I would have ridden through the night but I would have missed some of the best scenery of the trip. Like you I also had BB trouble. [RBW] 48cm Noodles
I tried to revive the old thread I started about this topic a few months back but it didn't look like new post could be added to it. Last week I got out on my LHT which has 48cm Noodles on it and have to say that the bars felt great. I really really like them and think I'll be really glad I put them on this bike later this summer when camping and touring. I'm extremely happy with the handling and set-up. While the aesthetic is somewhat different--fair amount of post showing and threadless fork/stem--it is still Rivish in set-up and even feel. I would totally consider using 48cm on my Hilsen although there's nothing really wrong with the 46cm Noodles it currently sports. I did take the wheels off the Hilsen (36h Delgado rims on XT hubs) for the LHT but am in the process of getting a new set (32h Delgados, XT hubs) built up now. If you've ever thought about using 48cm Noodles, I say go for it. And one more thing, I'm very happy with the color, quality and feel of the Newbaum's cloth tape. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Marathon Supreme Input please
This has been an informative thread. I really like my 700x35 Supremes. Tempted to try the 40s, but they're a tad expensive. I also keep threatening to try Kojacks. I've come to realize that not only am I a bag-o-holic but I'm also a tire-o-holic. [RBW] Re: First S24O to Sam P. Taylor with photos.
I carried everything for an S24O in a medium SS and a front trunck sack last year. This didn't include a tent but I definitely had everything that I needed. I realize what one needs can vary depending on weather, comfort needs, food, etc... Still, I would think that a Large SS could do the job. http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/4945981066/in/set-72157613195465589 And even more minimal load was used on my first S24O back in 2007: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/1074699762/in/set-72157615006576577 And to the original poster, great pictures. Thanks for posting. I camped out at Samuel P. Taylor many times when in Boyscouts and a couple of times in the 80s when I went out there with friends and a ton of beer. When I started cycling in the 90s I would often ride the bike path through there but never had a desire to bike camp, but now... if I was still in SF I'm sure I'd make it an S24O destination along with Pt Reyes and especially Pantoll. Pantoll seems like a really great destination for a weekday S240 with easy access to Peet's in Mill Valley for coffee in the morning. Maybe even a little excursion up RR Grade before heading to Peet's. I may have to go bike camping tomorrow night as the weather in PDX is supposed to be great. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: need ideas for versatile touring/commuting bars other than rando/drops
Both VO and Soma have a few bars that are albatross like, but narrower. Actually, so does Riv, the Dove Bar -- classic 3 speed bars. Cheaper than Albatross too! Soma has that Lauterwasser bar that's sort of half drop half moustache. There seem to be a lot of choices to try! I recently tried the Nitto u-shape bars "B-617 Promenade Handlebar". Mixed feeleings about it. It's narrow - 45cm. I think it needs to be either higher or farther away than is possible on this particular bike so that my knees are well clear. It's comfortable on the grip portion, or to grab it on the horizontal part near the stem clamp. It's still a 'possible' for the simple-one that is hopefully coming soon. I like the albatross. I like drops too. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. To post to this group, send email to rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com. [RBW] Columbia Gorge Ride
Today was an absolutely amazing day here in Portland. I woke to sun and expected highs in the 70s. I ended up doing an out and back from home to a few miles past Multnomah Falls. In spite of the nice weather the traffic wasn't too bad. The descent from Crown Point is really one of my favorites. It also makes for a great climb. I rode the Hilsen with no fenders, a small saddlebag and JB Green tires. I gotta say, the Hilsen felt light, fast and responsive. It's a great bike and today was a perfect day for getting out on it. [RBW] Re: SKS Fenders have their place in my world
I don't mind SKS fenders so much but they're a bummer if you're riding with others as they're too short to keep spray off of people riding directly in front and behind you. The issue of rear spray can be resolved with a flap but there is still a bit of spray that will shoot forward. Next winter I may try the SKS longboard fenders although both pairs of P45s that I have seem to be holding up well enough. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: considering pedals/Cascade/Sierra tour
Yes, please post photos of your tour. Last year after finishing up my brevet series on SPDs I spent the summer and fall riding platform pedals. This year seems to be a repeat of that. I'll most likely keep the SPDs on my brevet bike but the Hilsen has MKS Sneaker Pedals and the LHT has Grip Kings. I both pedals work fine for me although I need to add traction pins to the GKs. I'm touring for about 10 days in Aug and my tentative plan is to use platform pedals of some sort. I kinda wish Rivendell would get a "deluxe" version of the Grip King made with sealed bearings and would come with removable traction pins in place. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I've installed Berthouds and SKS fenders multiple times and have no problems with either. If I'm riding off road I actually prefer the SKS because they are shorter. I live in Portland, commute by bike literally everyday and have no problems or complaints about the SKS fenders on my commuter. All that said... the metal fenders do look nicer. My rando bike has VO aluminum fenders and they look nice, provide great coverage and seem to be made well enough. The person that built the frame actually installed the fenders for me and made some changes to them (using two eyebolts on the rear fender as opposed to one) and added a custom front leather flap that is installed in a trick way I don't know how to describe. I actually have a pair of SKS/Berthoud fenders laying around that I purchased from Peter White. I guess they don't make them anymore. I'll probably install them on one of my bikes this fall. I think I probably will invest in teh Trangia, seems a really worthwhile investment, especially if one wants to do some real cooking. I'll probably pick one up before the Aug tour.
