There was a time when I thought BFs were absolutely ridiculous but then, as with Rivendells, I took another look at them with an open mind and now am really intrigued by them. Last year I was heading home from a ride and started talking with a fellow who has toured extensively on one. Although the conversation was brief he kind of sold me on them. Photo:

The bikes seem quite functional.
