[RBW] Re: Grant refers to this helmet guy for some reason
Everyone else is chiming in.so. I wear a helmet when mountain biking in my typical fashion. I ride NC and Southeast singletrack with very steep, rocky descents as fast as I can. I have broken more than one helmet via crashes. It would be idiotic to not wear a helmet. I suspect even the anti-helmet crowd would see the sense in a helmet here. I wear a helmet when doing 'go fast' road rides. For me, in this situation, there's no good reason not to. I do not bother with a helmet when riding to the park, pedaling around on a beach vacation, or even heading downtown for errands, etc. My father on the other hand religously wears a helmethe WILL NOT sit on a bike without a helmet. This seems silly to me. Most of the 'mountain biking' I see on the Riv site looks perfectly fine for helmetless riding. IMO fighting against helmets on a widespread basis is pointless. Make your own decisions. Anyone been on the ski slopes recently? Talk about creating a market out of nothing! I don't know ANYONE who has ever taken a serious knock while skiing, but suddenly 30%+ of the market is wearing a shell. I've had the same Schwalbe/Synergy combo. as you for about 8 months and have never even had a flat. I do remember the tires fitting loosely when I installed them. I have ridden them with various tire pressure(30-80psi) with no issues, so I don't think it is the rim/tire combination. I don't weigh as much as you, but I have carried a lot of weight. Stickers are peeling but the paint looks great. I did not measure the bike but stood next to it...probably a 54-56cm frame. [RBW] Re: Crank arm length on Bleriot
What size tires do you have? I ride a 53 Bleriot prototype with 170mm cranks. I rode the first 4,000 miles or so with Nifty Swifties(32mm), and did have occasional pedal strike when pedaling through turns. I have been riding Schwalbe Marathons(40mm) for about 8 months and have never had pedal strike with them. The larger tires lifted the bb a bit. I have been riding seriously(commuting, touring, road rides) for around 9-10 years, so I tend to be very careful when pedaling around turns. In fact I never had pedal strike when riding a fixed gear for many years. So, while I do agree that pedal strike can be avoided by proper technique, I also attribute my pedal strike to the low bottom bracket/ narrower tires on my Bleriot. Hope this helps. [RBW] Vittoria 1976 Men's Cycling Shoe
Any opinions on these shoes? I have no desire to give up clipless pedals, but I am also finding cycling shoes more and more obnoxious. They are either a $350 carbon disaster or a massive "touring" shoe that seems more suited for hiking. I love the look of these Vittoria shoes and the SPD compatibility. Timely discussion as I just purchased an Expedition Asym. I have only set it up in my back yard but I think I will really like it. It HAS to be better than a tent for me. Not once have I slept well in a tent without some sort of sleep aid. I highly recommend watching all the setup videos, etc as it's not idiot proof. Also, I recommend the 'snake skins' accessory. Out of the box evalgreat fit w/ medium weight socks and room for thicker ones. Toe box is roomy. Some reviews said the shoe was narrow, but I don't notice anything unique. [RBW] FS: 54 Saluki - Butterscotch
For sale is a complete 54cm Saluki in beautiful butterscotch. Comes with everything pictured, parts listed below. This has been my daily commuter for around 13 years, so it’s got some patina. The clear coat is flaking off on the top tube and down tube, so the decals are faded and flaky, but I’m including a new set of decals(purchased from Riv) if the buyer wants to have the frame repainted in the future. There is one very small ding in the top tube(see pic), and scratches on the chainstay from chainsuck and chainslap, otherwise in good condition. I’m including a set of cream SKS longboard fenders that will match the cream headtube. Asking $1,650+shipping, or free delivery in Austin, TX. [RBW] FS: COHO/Charles Lathe Lugged Steel Bike (Western North Carolina)
Going to part with my lugged steel randonneuring/light touring bike built for me by Charles Lathe under his COHO brand. 58 cm top tube. I'm 5'11" and it fits me perfectly and very similar to the Rivs I've owned. Ultegra/Open Pro wheels, King 1" threaded hs, SRAM Rival components, with Velo Orange crankset. Long reach brakes. Big negative is the powder coat job was poor and there's some decent rust around lug edges and under the top tube. Would be an easy project to have it stripped and re-finished. I don't ride anymore and just want to pass it along. Shoot me an email for pics and make an offer! RE: [RBW] Can I rant just a minute?
I do enjoy riding with others, but if you and your companions are not on the same wavelength it can suck. Let em ride 29 miles like (insert fast cyclist here), I'd go ride 120 miles like Jan or 60 miles like Grant. Some people know how to enjoy being in the saddle longer than others. > Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2011 23:11:42 -0800 > Subject: [RBW] Can I rant just a minute? > From: anne.paul...@gmail.com > To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com > > I love riding with my bike club, really I do, and they're wonderful > people and great riding companions, but can I just rant here, among > like-people, for just a minute? > > I swear, when someone shows up at my club with a new bike, the first > and only topic of discussion is weight. > > WEIGHT IS NOT THE ONLY CRITERION WHEN PICKING BIKE FRAMES AND BIKE PARTS. > > Thank you.
