[RBW] my joe appaloosa setup

2016-05-09 Thread William R.
Very nice Patrick. I like the way your Joe is evolving. I'm seeing a lot of
smart and fun touches. Zip tie-ing the saddle security to the seat post. Fun
pink tape-ing the basket to the rack. The Chocomoose bar design always struck
me as somewhat "Jonesy". Not surprised to see one show up on an Appaloosa.
Seeing it on yours, and comparing it to the Chocomoose on mine, the differences
stand out. Clearly it's wider and the grips don't "come back" as much as the
Choco's. The Jones must be very stable. I love the Choco for many reasons, but
most of all I appreciate how it is not quite so wide yet it performs like a
wide bar. I store my bikes in my basement. To go out I need to pass them
through a narrow door. The one bike that I have full size Boscoe's on is a pita
to get out! The Choco's not so much. Still, at some point it would be fun to
try the Jones bar. Lastly, that bell is pretty cool. What is it and how do you
like it?

[RBW] Re: Long/scenic day rides to do from the New York City area

2016-05-09 Thread William R.
Late to the table here but this is a great thread Bob. It's nice to hear
about all of these routes in our area. It's a really diverse area with lots
of great riding. I live in Dobbs Ferry, a "rivertown" (Hudson) on the west
side of Westchester Co. I'm lucky, my house is right in between where the
Putnam and Acquaduct Paths run parallel to each other. It's less than a
mile for me to ride to entrances to either. Those two paths are where I do
most of my riding. The roads here get very congested and shoulders are
little to none for the most part. It seems Rivendell's are made to ride
these paths, my Joe Appaloosa is perfect for the terrain here. I do venture
off these well-worn paths from time to time. Every fall my family goes to
the Sheep and Wool Festival at the Duchess County Fairgrounds. A few years
ago I started riding up after Google mapping a favorable route. It's a
great ride that could start on the Acquaduct or Putnam paths, then some
nice country roads (first photo) and then the very nice paved Duchess
County Pathway. Its a 85-90 mile ride depending on exact route from my
house. Add 15-20 from the city? I could probably come up with my actual
route if anybody wants it, otherwise I find the bike option on Google Maps
to be pretty good. I grew up in southern Connecticut on the Long Island
Sound. I often ride from home to my sisters house in Fairfield which is
about a 60 mile ride. There are some great dirt roads along the border
between Westchester Co. and Connecticut and then its not too far to get to
great riding along the coast in CT. Again, sorry for not supplying routes.
I usually go by feel when I go to Connecticut. Having grown up there, I
never seem to get lost for long! Of course I ride into the city often too.
Adventures to the outer boro's, Rockaway Beach, Coney Island and Staten
Island happen a few times a year. A few shots attached: (1) somewhere in
Westchester/Duchess Co., (2) Old Croton Acquaduct, (3) Joe Appaloosa at the
Old Croton Dam (source of the Old Acquaduct).

2016-05-14 Thread William R.
Hey Bob E, I like your Trek too. I see you have a lot of a long stem showing
there like I do. Do you experience flex like I do? My 7000 is strictly a short
distance bike so it's not a big issue. But boy can I flex that cockpit! I have
it set up as my train station bike now. Generic saddle that came on my
Appaloosa chained to the frame for security. It's a good bike that works for me
with that bar/stem combo.

[RBW] FS: 8-Speed Cassette, Apex Crankset w/BB, Pair of Rich Lesnik built wheels and a couple of other individual wheels

2013-12-29 Thread William R.

Hi all. Taking advantage of time off during the holidays to go through my
stuff and see what I need and don't need. The following items are for sale
in the hopes of fueling various winter projects :-) All prices include
shipping in CONUS via USPS. If you are outside of that area and are
interested in any of this stuff, get in touch, we'll work something out.
Feel free to contact me on or off list with any Q's. Hopefully all of my
attachments show up. If not, I have photos of all that I can email. Thanks
for looking and happy holidays! -Bill

1.) SRAM PG830 11-32 8-speed cassette. This saw very little use. It shows
very little wear. $15

2.) SRAM Apex compact crankset. Includes GXP external type bottom bracket.
Crank arms are 175. Chainrings are 50/34. I had this on my Sam H. for a
while. I assume it will fit on most Rivs. This crankset has seen pretty
heavy use. All kinds of little cosmetic things going on, but it functions
beautifully. Chainrings are showing some wear. $65

3.) Pair of 700c 32h LX hubs, Synergy rims built by Rich Lesnick at Riv.
These saw light use and are in very good shape. Includes skewers and rim
strips. $230

4.) One rear wheel: 700c 36h LX hub, Mavic A319 rim. Includes skewer and
rim strip. This is a machine built wheel from Harris Cyclery and I got the
$20 check over that Harris offers when you buy these. Good wheel. Many more
miles in it for anyone comfortable with a spoke wrench. Not that it needs
anything now. $85

5.) One front wheel: 700c Mavic Aksium. 20 radially laced, bladed spokes.
This is a surprisingly strong, light-weight wheel that I have kept around
as a spare and used on occasion with no problems. I usually ran Jack Browns
on this and it felt great. It is perfectly true. Can't say I had the same
satisfaction with the rear! This is a great wheel though. $65

[RBW] Ultra dark chocolate, Grant style

2014-11-16 Thread William R.
That's funny, I did the same thing last night, right down to the salted
macadamias! Now I have a large ziplock back full of very dark chocolate in the
freezer. I read Patrick's recipe last week and tried that too. I found that
Grants recipe gave similar results but a lot more! There's a lot of sugar free
chocolate in my freezer now. I used xylitol as the sweetener last night. One
heaping tablespoon and it's still not very sweet. But I have found that it
still really takes care of my chocolate craving yet I don't need to eat very
much to cover my needs. I think I might make some whipped cream at some point
and combine that with this chocolate as a nice dessert.

[RBW] Re: If you were going to go out and buy a fully modern contemporary bike, what would it be?

2014-06-26 Thread William R.
This Niner RLT 9 is a cool bike no doubt. It tugs at several of my strings.
I've gone back and looked at it several times. Did it again today having
read this post. I went and looked at Bike Rumors review Bike Rumor Niner
RLT 9 Review
.
But... you don't need to read into that review too deeply before you get to
suggestions of carbon bars and flexible seat posts to get away from the
jariness of the aluminum frame. Correct me but I don't think a rock-hard
aluminum frame will never "plane". It will never have a nice, compliant
ride, and it will never give you the feedback and comfort of a good steel,
ti or even carbon frame. I dream of Calfee's too. And Co-Motions, Maps,
AHH's and Black Mountain Monster Cross's. Dreamin' is good!

[RBW] new chain

2014-06-28 Thread William R.
Just installed a new chain (kmc 9 speed) on my Soma Grand Randonneur (Riv
content: noodles, nitto stem, brooks saddle, velocity/atlas wheels, brand v
bag, newbaums, brakes all from Riv!). My question is that I want to try to run
the chain with only the factory lube. It's been said here that the chain holds
up well this way. But as time goes by and the miles add up, how do I maintain
the chain and keep it clean? Thanks for any tips and tricks anyone can give for
this. -Bill

[RBW] Re: new chain

2014-06-29 Thread William R.
Garth: I really over paid at $14.95 a chain! I got three at that price. Plan to
change them out every 1000 miles. Now that I have the super-nice Rene Herse
crankset and also very nice SRAM 9-speed cassette. Not sure which model but it
has a solid red sleeve for the six largest cogs. Really quiet and solid. I
really want the teeth on these two items to last as long as possible! What I
have done for the longest time is use wd40 on my chain before every ride. A
good soaking and a good wipe. This has worked well. Almost too well as my
chains last so long without any big problems that I haven't really paid
attention to wear as much as I should. You should see the teeth on my old Apex
crank. The teeth are all worn down to points!

Well, I rode the new chain 50+ miles this morning on only the factory lube. I
guess I will do the same for as long as I can take it. Then I will go back to
my tried and true wd40 method.

[RBW] Re-Introduction

2013-04-18 Thread William R.
Hi all. I don't post here too often. Mostly read the great Riv news and info
posted here. But I just changed my id from Will to William R. I noticed that
there is another Will. I used to be Nagomano but at one point somebody
suggested that we try to use our proper names. There was already a Bill or two
and at least one William, so I chose Will. But of course there is another Will!
And so, with respect to all the other Bills/Wills/Williams I've gone and made
it William R. That's what I will go as until another William R. comes along at
which point I will add more letters from my last name! I love my blue Sam and I
get most of my cycling info from this group. Just wanted to give everyone an
idea of who I am and who I was and why. It's good to be a Riv owner and a
member of this group.

I agree the brifters were fun and cool. I had shimano sti and campy ergo on
bikes in times past. Wanted to try the sram stuff. Ultimately I decided to
go back to downtube friction via Paddy-the-Peddlers adapter. Now soon to go
on the ends of Alba's. It's all good fun. I guess I am one of those people
that switches things around a lot! Ha ha: every time I do though I am
thinking that this is the way it will be forever... Right... I'm fairly
certain now after going back and forth a couple of times that I want to be
all friction all the time. I've gotten very comfortable with it and I enjoy
the extra movement that it promotes. So now it's like this:

Re: [RBW] Re-Introduction

2013-04-23 Thread William R.
Hi Dave. It's a Zimbale saddle bag, which I have come to realize is an Asian
(Korea?) company that basically copies Carradice. I have some remorse over that
(not the Asian part, the copying of Carradice). I take solace in the fact the
saddle bag seems to me to be their one bag that I couldn't find their
inspiration for. So maybe it's an original design? If you do a search for
Zimbale you will find these bags at low cost but limited availability. Last
time I checked, the company didn't seem to be thriving, I think that might be
because of their grey-ish market existence. FWIW: it's bigger than the Brand V
saddle bag that I also have on my other bike and like, but smaller than most
other dedicated saddlebags that Carradice and others make with additional
pockets. -Bill

Re: [RBW] Re: Yet another post on shimmy

2013-04-26 Thread William R.
I'm sorry to hear you are having this experience with your Sam H. I too am a
60cm Sam owner. In fact, I've had two: first an orange single tt canti version,
and now a double tt blue side pull variant. I have never experienced any shimmy
or wobble on either. Actually, my experiencd has always been the opposite. The
Sam H's have been the smoothest, stable-est, most wonderful bikes to ride that
I have ever had the pleasure to ride. However, I have only ever had small
saddle bags with light loads in them. One of my greatest pleasures during a
ride is the ability, on a descent, to momentarily take my hands off the bars to
open and take a pull from my bottle. I'm always struck by the frames stability
at those times. In crosswinds even! No matter... I wonder if its possible that
your particular frame could have an alignment issue develop for one reason or
another? Maybe worth considering if you can't solve it moving things around.
Maybe have your LBS check it out.

Re: [RBW] Re: Yet another post on shimmy

2013-04-26 Thread William R.
Hi John. Sounds like you have a lot of things you can try this weekend to try
to solve your issue. In addition to considering getting your alignment checked,
I would also suggest the headset too. The headset that Riv sent with my frame
went indexed steering on me in short order. I wasn't comfortable taking my
hands off the bars until I put a King headset on. Smooth sailing. Getting back
to you on the single tt vs double tt: there are some nuances that I've noticed.
Mostly it is a small degree stiffer. I run my tires a bit softer because of
that. It's not issue-worth-mentioning really. On the plus side I find the bike
easier to portage with the lower tt. The bike is more balanced as I run or walk
with it. It's a nice feeling with the bike on my shoulder just holding the stem
lightly with the same hand. The other hand free for balance while crossing
un-rideable obstacles and such. The biggest deal for me was the brakes. I
really didn't like messing with the canti's on the original. It seemed like
every time I touched them it took me an hour to get them back into adjustment!
I pined for one of Rivs bikes with the silver brakes on them. When Grant had
that initial special on the "bleu" Sams I jumped at it. All is well now. I hope
you can get everything set up to your liking with yours.

[RBW] Cycling computers

2013-04-28 Thread William R.
Hi John. Do you have a smart phone by any chance? If so and if you already take
yours with you when you ride then you already have a cycle computer. I use a
app called Cyclemeter but there are many more options out there. I turn it on
when I head out on a ride, put in my bag and forget it. But you could get a
handlebar mount for your phone and go that way. These apps are so intuitive
they make traditional cycle computers obsolete. Nothing against not having a
smart phone of course. There are great deals out there on the more traditional
cycle computers. My most recent experience is with a Cateye Wireless. I wasn't
happy with it. Very confusing to program. If I were going that route I would
look for a cheap, wired Avocet 35 from back in the 90's. I found their
operation simple. Never needed all the cadence and heart rate stuff.

[RBW] Sugino Triple Cranks on Sam H.

2013-04-29 Thread William R.
Hi all. I am planning on installing a Sugino XD2 triple crankset that Riv sells
on my Sam H. I am trying to figure out if an IRD bottom bracket with a 110mm
spindle that I have will work for this application. I went looking for the XD2
bb size on Sheldon Brown, but it wasn't listed. There are XD600, 500 and 300
but no XD2. Is the XD2 the same as one of those? For those cranks lists larger
spindle lengths but then says that 107mm will work in some situations. I could
have sworn that somewhere on the Riv site it says that 110mm bb is the right
size. But I can't find that now. Can anyone set me straight? Thanks.

[RBW] FS: Waterford RSE-22 F/F/HS with problems

2013-05-20 Thread William R.
Whoa! I'll say that crack looks structural! You said that you contacted a frame
builder. But did you contact THE frambuilder? Even if you are not the original
owner, Waterford may stand behind their product and give you a more reasonable
repair cost. I realize you may be past that point. Just a FWIW thought.

[RBW] FS Samuel Hillborne 60cm (nearly) complete

2013-06-04 Thread William R.

I've decided to try and see if there is any interest in my 60cm Sam. It's
one of the blue beauties that I've had for a year. Frame bought straight
from Riv. I built it up myself. It's a bit of an ecclectic build with the
vintage Suntour Mountech derailleurs, but it all works sweet. Chris King
headset. Albas with Dia Comp (Silver internals) friction shifters out on
the ends of the bars. The photos show the bars without grips but they are
wrapped with shellacked burgundy Neubaums over Cinelli cork (nice) just on
the ends between the brake levers and the shifters. The stem is 12cm Velo
Orange with stem adapter which makes it easy to switch the bars out. Chain,
8-speed (12-34) cassette, IRD bottom bracket and Sugino XD600 triple
crankset (26-36-46t, 175 length) are all new. Wheels are Mavic A317's laced
to Shimano LX hubs (36h). Straight and true, less than a year old. Tires
are Schwalbe Marathon Racers 38's with less than 500 miles on them. They
look new. SKS silver fenders with reflective 3m tape are included. Disclaimer:
the rear derailleur is limited to the top four gears in the little front
chainring and the bottom four gears in the big front chainring. Middle ring
shifts the full range. I've enjoyed this as it teaches good
anti-cross-chaining skills and those unreachable gears are overlap anyways.
Disclaimer #2: under the tape and twine chainstay protector on the drive
side are some obligatory minor chain slap chips. They are small. No dents
anywhere. No other chips, dents, scratches. Things shown in the photos that
are not included: saddle, saddle bag, bottle, bottle cages, light, bell and
pedals. I guess they are negotiable. If you want any of those things
included let me know. It's a beautiful bike. The only reason I am looking
to sell is that I recently added a new bike to my stable with the knowledge
that I would have to let one go. Space restrictions, an understanding wife
(within reason) and two kids... Please email off list with any questions
or for larger or additional photo files. I would like to find someone local
in the New York Metro area to buy it. I live in southern Westchester Co.
just north of the city. Interested parties on this list are welcome to come
and test ride it. I will certainly consider shipping. We just need to
figure out the particulars of that. I don't trust my packing skills. Let me
know if you are interested. As far as price goes: I will entertain any
realistic offers. Lets talk!

This is funny. Last year, right about this time, it was when Rapha had just

"Yak butter". It has stayed with me as the epitome of fredish brilliance!

[RBW] Albatross or Noodles - Help Me Decide

2013-06-21 Thread William R.
Hey Johnny. Just as the 48 Noodles were a revelation for me, the Alba's have
been too more recently. I have the two different set ups on two different
bikes. If you can't do two bikes then I agree with having the two cockpits set
up for swapping out. It's a lot of fun switching back and forth. I ride similar
routes all the time on both bikes and my ride time differences are negligable.
Sometimes I am faster on the heavier Sam with Alba's so go figure. I've been
enjoying my rides on the Alba'd Sam so much in fact, that I'm kicking myself
for ever considering selling it. It's a blast. Did a pretty fast 90 mile ride
on it a couple weeks ago. No problems.

[RBW] Does your upstroke knee break the plane of your Alba bar ends?

2013-07-15 Thread William R.
Hi Michael. I'm not around my Sam right now to check for sure, but I don't
think my knees break that plane. I've got my Albas turned down a bit and even
have my shifters mounted on the bar ends, but I can't remember ever touching
any part of that setup with my knee. One thing I have noticed that I do when
making tight u-ies is I open my legs wide to hold my balance at low speed. This
also serves to prevent any contact with the bars. The Albas are great and I
also enjoy the scenery. It's a nice alternative to my Black Mountain Road that
I have set up with Noodles. It's really fun switching back and forth between
the two set ups. Enjoy the ride!

3.) Clamp on down tube shifter bosses. These are Paddy-the-Peddlers
excellent design using a stainless Norma clamp. Looks great and works

2013-08-11 Thread William R.
More on the Nitto R14 top rack. It came up if the stays were cut. And they have
been to fit a smaller 650 Betty Foy. It's a 53 I think. I measured the length
and they are 31.5cm with maybe a centimeter of adjustment available. I held
them up to my 60cm Sam and no way would it fit. So get it if you have a smaller
frame or I would consider letting it go for less to offset the cost of new
stays. -Bill

[RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-10-31 Thread William R.
Hey Patrick, I'm in the same boat as you, I'm an 87 pbh and I ordered the 55. I
don't doubt my choice though. I don't think you can go wrong either way but
I've got my reason for going with the 55. In the not too distant past I was a
big frame guy. I went with two 60cm Sams. An orange canti brake version, and
later a blue, double tt, silver side pull version. Barely a fist of seat post
showing on those babies! And they rode like caddies! I could do things no hands
on those bikes that no sane person should do! I miss that orange Sam the most.
I still have and will keep my big 60cm VO Polyvalent. I'm not expecting the 55
Joe to behave drastically different than the 60 Sam's or the 58 Joe. Just
perhaps a little more nimble. I am sure that when I first get it I will ride it
everywhere but I'm really getting it to fill the mixed terrain/dirt road/trail
rider role. A few blug posts back was the 54cm Hunqapillar 1x11 that Mark
built. I thought that would have worked great for me too. Not too small. The
price tag would have been almost twice what this deal on the Joe is and I think
the 55 will do just fine in that role. If you are unsure of your choice just
give them a call. They will point out all of the pros and cons (if any) of
choosing one size or the other.

best,

-Bill

2015-11-10 Thread William R.
Ok... so after a week or so of thinking it over, measuring myself and
measuring again. Realizing I'm really an 88 pbh. Fretting over choosing a
55 and knowing that I really want a Riv designed by Grant to ride like a
Riv. On many surfaces, many distances, many different kinds of loads and
lack of. After all those thoughts I got in touch with Grant and he
confirmed what I was thinking (and I confirmed that previously I wasn't
thinking!) that the 58 Appaloosa will be the right size for me. Dave
changed my order and I'm now getting a 58 Appaloosa! Sorry to the group for
stating my case with such conviction and then changing my mind. I hope I
didn't cause anyone to make similar sizing decisions. Good news is there
seems to be a little time to change minds!

[RBW] Re: What length Silver Cranks came on your Clem?

2015-11-12 Thread William R.
Grant had this to say in July:

"I am excited about our SILVER crank. It may, in fact, be perfect. It’ll
come on the CLEM (with CLEMMISH chainrings), and then on the APPA, and
we’ll have it available for sale, too. In the Spring. As a triple with 43 x
35 x 24 rings, and as a double with 38 x 24 rings. In 170, 173, 178, and
182 lengths…is the plan."

I wonder what length will be spec'ed on my 58 Appaloosa. Probably 173 or
178, either of which I will be fine with.

Hi. I really enjoy looking at everyone's garage/spaces! Terrific, inspiring

working mess! But, you know, it's the one area in my life where I don't
have to adhere to anyone else's rules. So this is what happens! Once or
twice a year I will thoroughly clean and organize. Then it slowly works
itself back to this natural state. Our little family is packed into this
house that has no garage. So when we first bought it and moved in I staked
my claim on this corner of the basement. Bikes shown are 1x9 Soma GR w/SB
Hills, VO Poly V, Trek "Cruiser" (my one bike I don't mind being called
that!), my wife's Betty Foy, son's Isla, son's old Kona now my daughters
bike (soon to be festooned with pink grips, saddle and pedals!). Still,
plenty of room for Joe Appaloosa! Take all this as a warning for what could
happen to you. Or a dream depending on your point of view.

Thanks for posting these pics Patrick. This is the best look at the Choco Moose

Re: [RBW] Non-Schwalbe Tire Recommendations for Large Clem.

2015-11-25 Thread William R.
Hi David and Patrick,

How about the Continental Speed King? It is a high performance, light
weight, hard pack MTB tire like the Furious Fred. It comes in 622-55, so a
little bigger than the FF, I'm looking at it as a potential tire for my up
coming Joe Appaloosa. These tires are light and fast and perhaps a little
vulnerable/not as long lasting as others? Don't really know, but their tech
specs look good (fast!), anybody have experience with the Speed Kings?

[RBW] Is Joe the evolved Sam?

2015-12-01 Thread William R.
Hey John, I think you're onto something there. The Joe and the Sam have a lot
of similarities. I wouldn't be surprised if the tubing were the same or very
close to the Sam's. And they are being built in the same facility. But I think
the geometry will put it in its own model designation. In some ways maybe it
could be called a Sam "plus". But the fact that it will really be a longer,
upright bar bike like the Clem puts it off on its own. And I'm sure we will see
more Sam's at some point. I hope we do. BTW: the Joe pre sale officially ends
today.

Hi Andrew. Short answer is no. The only thing close to the final Joe Apploosa
that we will get in Feb/March is the 55cm Proto Appaloosa that was featured in
the Blug announcement. And that frames geo doesn't really correspond to the
final geo provided. If I were close enough to Riv HQ I think you could go test
a Cheviot for long chain stay feel and a Sam for size and they would give you a
pretty good idea.

Re: [RBW] Thunder Burts and Snow

2016-01-04 Thread William R.
Hi Deacon and Patrick: what do you think of the Thunder Burts as a mixed
terrain tire on pavement to get to the dirt roads and trails? Nothing too
technical, mostly smooth packed dirt. I'm talking 5-10 miles on the road
and mixed use paths to get there though. Are they a buzzy compromise there
or does their light weight and suppleness have them feeling fast on
pavement? I'm trying to decide what to outfit my Appaloosa with when it
comes. I'm thinking all over the place from Big Bens (fast on pavement, but
heavier and less supple) to the liteskin TBs maxing out the width around
55mm.

[RBW] FS: Roadini 57cm Grilver (nearly) complete build $2200

2018-07-29 Thread William R.
With a little reluctance I've decided to sell my Leo Roadini. It is a
lovely bike, but it is proving to be a rough summer financially in my
household, so I've decided to let it go. I take solace in the fact that my
Appaloosa will handle just about all of my needs. I had a lot of fun
building this Roadini up last fall, but since then I have ridden it less
than 500 miles, and I've put much more on the Joe.

I built it up with a mix of new and used parts. The Velocity A23/105
wheelset is new with the build, as are the brake levers and calipers, Paul
Racer Medium in the front and Shimano Ultegra level in back. This was what
it took to clear the lovely Compass Barlow Pass tires (700x38). The bike
rides so nicely with these tires! The Compass/Rene Herse Crankset has been
around on a couple other builds, but it and the SKF bottom bracket are
beautiful. The XT rear mech is the oldest part on the bike, but you
wouldn't know it. The drive train performs flawlessly. The chain was new
with the build. The Simplex Retrofriction shifters are the bees knees. 48cm
wide Noodles. It is a great, light, go anywhere road bike. I am 6'1" with a
87pbh and it fits me perfectly.

Comes as shown in the attached photos except it does not include saddle,
pedals, bell, bag and click fix front adapter which is on the bike in the
last photo. I can send more photos on request.

I would love to find someone in the New York City metro area to hand this
off to. With that said, I will ship at the buyers expense in addition to
the sale price.

[RBW] Re: FS: Roadini 57cm Grilver (nearly) complete build $2200

2018-08-18 Thread William R.
Hi Raymond,

Sorry it took me so long to respond! Yes, I am asking $2200. And yes, it is
a beautiful bike.

I know that my original post said I was mostly looking to sell to someone
local and avoid shipping. But I will "bump" this sale now and say that
$2200 is the sale price shipped to the continental US. I will pack it
myself. I have done this many times and am good at it. But, if you wish to
have it professional packed, you would need to pay one of my local shops to
do that and then I will pay the actual shipping. For anyone interested
local to my area with no shipping, the price is now $2100.

I've been meaning to take more photos of the bike as the buyer would
receive it. In lieu of that please know that the price does not include the
saddle and does not include any bags, pedals, bottles & bottle cages, bells
or electronics that are on the bike in the photos in the original post.

All questions welcome and thanks for your interest.

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?

2018-08-19 Thread William R.
I use one of the B&M Icon Core rechargeable lights that I bought from Peter
2-3 years ago. It is a great light that is going strong despite heavy use
and abuse. It does have a narrow yet long shaped beam. When riding on area
paths and trails in total darkness I like to pair it with an older Nite
Rider MiNute 600 rechargeable. I am very sensitive to bothering others with
its symmetrical beam though. I keep it pointed down to just light up the
area directly out in front as I ride. These two lights used in tandem on
their lowest settings provide plenty of long lasting light and security
while riding in total darkness for me. But yeah, as soon as I'm back on the
roads and just need to be seen, I turn the Nite Rider off.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rene Herse crank wobble/deflection issue(?)

2018-09-26 Thread William R.
I've been following this thread and I'm surprised that we haven't heard
from Jan himself. I can share my experience and what I learned going
through it. When I first got my Rene Herse crankset and SKF bottom bracket
three years ago, I had a similar experience where the crank was wobbling
and I couldn't get the derailleur to trim silently. I would be riding and
looking down, I could see that the crank wasn't running true. It was
certainly frustrating considering how much money I had just spent! I
contacted Compass directly and spoke (via email) with Jan himself. First
off he stated how high the tolerances on the SKF bottom bracket and Herse
crankset are and how super rare it would be for the spider to not be true.
More likely was for the chainrings to get bent slightly in shipping and
easily fixed on the bike with vise grips (with a towel to protect the
beautiful finish of the rings) and lightly bending them back to true. Most
likely (and what I was doing wrong) was that something was wrong with with
the high tolerance of the interface between the crank and the SKF bottom
bracket. It was coming loose slightly, just enough to put a little wobble
in the rotation of the crank. To remedy this Jan told me that the interface
between the crank and bottom bracket should be totally clean of any type of
grease or lube and tightened to the correct torque. He suggested that I get
one of the Herse "peanut butter knife" crank bolt wrenches (a knock off the
old campy wrench for good reason). The length of wrench are ensures that
you get the bolts in the proper area of torque with out over or under
tightening. I did both things and haven't had a problem since. The problem
can also develop when the high tolerance of a new Herse crankset is mated
to a used and/or less high tolerance bottom bracket. If the interface
issues between the crank and bb are not recognized and fixed early on,
irepairable damage can be done to the crank.

Hope this is helpful.

[RBW] Re: Roadkill intense increase in your area this week?

2018-10-09 Thread William R.
Hi Lum,

Yes, I have noticed an uptick for sure, up here in New York State just
north of the city and also closer to where you are. My parents live on the
Maryland shore and I was down there visiting and riding my Appaloosa this
past weekend. The squirrels are very active right now and I saw many dead
ones on the road, some of them spectacularly (and sadly) where I had to
swing wide to avoid them fenderless. I also saw one deer, a possum, a
turtle, and a few snakes (one quite large) all dead in the road. Surprised
to see the deer, don't see too many down there dead or alive. My parents
live in a quiet area away from the resorts and there is not usually that
much road kill. It's pretty sad.

Up here in Westchester, County, New York there is also an uptick. There is
a surprising amount of wildlife here. Lots of chipmunks, squirrels,
rabbits, skunks, raccoons, possum, deer, foxes and yes, the coyotes to got
with all of that food. I plan to chime in on Patrick Moore's coyote thread!
And yes, just a really sad amount of road kill up here at this time. Lots
of dead chipmonks on the MUP that I ride a lot, so they are getting hit by
bikes. They are crazy though, zipping back and forth, between my wheels, I
don't recall ever feeling that I made contact with one though...

Very interesting indeed Bill! That Instagram post wasn’t dated April 1? I
wonder if these will fit on my Appaloosa. If my nominal 44mm Snoqualmie Pass

same rims (Atlas). I will be eager to find out. As it is, 53s (Maxxis Torch)

did not. 55mm Compass may be the bees knees.

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-12 Thread William R.
Hi Kellie. I'm loving my 57cm Roadini. I agree with Austin's wife: it is
super smooth typical Riv geometry characteristics and certainly not twitchy
at all. Nice and light. As shown, it is about 27lbs, which is about 8lbs
lighter than my Appaloosa. These two bikes are not redundant at all and
have very separate purposes, I'm really enjoying both!

Build list:
48cm Noodles
Shimano Tiagra level levers
90mm Tallux stem
Simplex dt shift levers
Rene Herse crankset 46t/38t
XT RD
Can't remember which front derailleur off the top of my head
SKF 110mm BB
11-34 9-speed cassette
Brooks B-17 saddle
Paul Racer Medium front brake
Shimano Ultegra level rear side pull
Shimano 105 hubs laced to Velocity A23 rims 36h
Not sure which spokes
Compass Barlow Pass 700x38 tires
Neubaums green with clear shellac
Crank Bros. Candy 2 pedals

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-12 Thread William R.
The Paul Racer Medium front was necessary to make the 38s work. Plenty of
clearance. I've been riding it a lot. They are great. Couple more clearance
photos...

I believe the new Dia Comp center pull brake Riv is testing may provide the
same clearance at a lower price point.

[RBW] Re: Bill's 57cm Legolas build thread

2018-04-12 Thread William R.
Really nice Bill. I dig the color choice too. Will look forward to the full
build and the reports from the kinds of rides you get up to on this Legolas.

I like Romans color too. And the mixed Neo Retros on his. I never thought
of doing that, but I will now! Another thing I am noticing on Romans is
that he has attached something that looks like a cable adjuster to the
release connector on his front Neo Retro. That is a great idea: to attach
some kind of handle there that facilitates pulling that release out. I
carry pliers with me for that purpose. I love my Neo Retros on my
Appaloosa, but releasing them can be a pain. I'm going to try something
like that. I wonder if he spot welded that on there or just glued it with
Gorilla glue or something. I may contact him, but thought you might know.

Enjoy the build!

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-15 Thread William R.
Hi Tom. Thanks. The A23 rear is not offset. The wheels are 36h front and rear
and seem pretty solid. No problems. I like them a lot. I’m 225lbs and have
Atlas rims on my Appaloosa. These are good so far. I’m pretty handy with a
spoke wrench, but haven’t had to use it much on these so far. They are cheaper,
machine built wheels, so that is saying something.

As far as DT shifters go, I agree with everything Eamon said. I will add that I
really enjoy the movement that they encourage. I’m 52 and my back will be stiff
post ride if I don’t move around enough. And I really just like the finesse
required. I like making those little adjustments required with friction
shifting too. It all adds to the experience. I’ve got thumb shifters right at
the grips on the Joe. It’s really fun going back and forth between the two
builds.

I’ve had all of the different shifters besides electronic and I’ve settled on
these two types (dt and thumbies) for now. Good luck and have fun with the
choices that you make.

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-15 Thread William R.
Tom: pressure front is 63psi and rear about 67 seems to be the sweet spot
considering my weight. They seem nice and soft, but still hold up over the
nasties, curbs and such.

Clearance front in the Paul Racer Medium at the top is the tightest at 4mm. The
arms are super wide. Wider than the fork blades. Clearance to the fork blades
is 4mm on both sides also. Maybe 3.5. Right in between those two marks.

[RBW] Re: Cracking paint or (gulp) cracking frame?

2018-06-15 Thread William R.
I once suspected that I had a cracked frame at the base of the seat tube in
the area just above the lug in your first photo. I called the builder of
the frame and they sent me to a shop that was local to me for inspection.
The shop mechanic pulled the seat post out of the frame, grabbed a
flashlight and pointed it down the seat tube while cupping his hand around
the top of the seat post and the flashlight so no light would leak out
there. They turned out the lights in the room and we could all clearly see
the line of light leaking out at the area where I thought the crack was. It
was a tig welded Reynolds 853 frame and the builder admitted that they had
made some changes with the building process on the newer frames. Only frame
I've ever had crack on me and I've always been north of 180lbs, at times
well north! Anyway, maybe that method would work here too.

[RBW] Torque spec for quil stem questions

2018-01-14 Thread William R.
I am very much a “by feel” kind of tech guy. It’s why I like steel so much. It
allows you to operate in that manner as long as you are sensible and not a
brute and know your tools. I have torque wrenches, the old fashioned kind where
the arm bends and the arrow at the end points to the weight you are applying. I
rarely use them these days except when I need to loosen some old, too tight
part with a long arm for leverage. Mostly I have a Allen set that I got a long
time ago that has longer than normal arms, but not too long. Tightening a nitto
quill with one of these is perfect because it is impossible to over tighten
without attaching some long arm to the Allen. Basically I just tighten until
the wrench starts to hurt my hand alittle. Very unscientific! But I have never
had a too loose or two tight issue using this method with metal parts.

I loved it when Jan at Compass came out with his “peanut butter knife” crank
bolt wrench for his René Herse cranks. It is basically a copy of the classic
Campagnolo tool. This tool fits perfectly around the crank bolt and is shaped
specifically for optimal hand tightening of the crank bolt. Just tighten until
your hand hurts and it is tight enough!

I would not use this method with m5 rack, bottle and fender bolts though! One
could easily strip or snap those! I’m ginger with those.

My probably not too useful two cents on a cold Sunday morning nursing a cold.

[RBW] Re: BMC Road vs Roadini

2018-01-16 Thread William R.
Daniel: my Roadini came with a seat post, as it seems others did. I was
surprised to see the seatpost in there when I opened up the box. I thought I
read in one of Grant’s posts that seatposts would not be included. Maybe they
only had a certain amount.

Regarding tire clearance on the Roadini: I have found that 38 Compass Barlow
Passes fit with a big BUT: you have to use a Paul Racer Medium brake on the
front. And no fenders. Clearances are very good though.

I did have a BMC Road in the past and it was very nice indeed, but I agree with
others that have suggested that it’s geo is more race geo oriented with shorter
chainstays made it not quite as long haul comfortable and not as easy to get my
position as upright as my 50’s body requires.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell prices going up.

2018-01-31 Thread William R.
Oh man... I just want to add that Grant and Riv struggle to survive from
year to year in this country that does not support small, successful,
vibrant, loved, etc. companies like this. Riv employs a bunch of great,
real people that answer the phone when you call. People who love the
product just as much as we do. They ride it. They know it. There are a few
companies that I know of that sell similar product. Some of them are one
man businesses and/or businesses with fewer employees. I don't know how
they do it. I respect them too. But Riv, because Grant has stuck to his
guns always, and respects his employees, struggles at times to take care of
them. I can and have and will continue to support this. The pricing
increases seem reasonable to me. I have only ever had Taiwanese built Rivs.
They have all been great. My Appaloosa is just... wow, the details on that
frame, the ride quality, the incredible fork, long, sweet wheelbase, the
lugs, the paint. I got the complete new from Riv for $2,100! Today... I
don't know, I think it would still be an incredible deal at say $2,750...
And now I have my Roadini, which again is just beautiful and a joy to ride.
Grants design is just so spot on for my type of riding. So glad I found Riv
(or they found me). For all of this and more I say great, really well
thought out products at great prices. I'm not in a position to buy one of
the Waterford frames or a custom. But yes, the gap in pricing is reduced,
and Waterford mystifies me a little. If I were in that market, I would lean
to the custom Nobilette side, but I feel that both are still really good
values. The customs just got a little better. But enough blah drivel of
this Riv fan boy.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose vs. Choco-moose

2018-02-09 Thread William R.
The Chocomooses that came stock on my Appaloosa are bees knees perfect as
far as I'm concerned. But I definitely don't ride much single track on
mine. Dirt and that other stuff roads plenty. Rough, badly maintained MUPs,
yes. The thing that is so great about this set up is how stable it all is.
But for single track you will want more fast response maneuverability. I
would say maybe standard Bullmooses may be the way for you to go. But then
you need to consider that the Appa is designed for bars that sweep back
with a longer top tube. Maybe a non-moose bar with the right length stem
will enable you to dial in the reach better. I agree with Jeremy and others
that are using Jones bars on their Appaloosa's. That might be an avenue for
you to explore.

Good to hear Bill, and very inspirational. I often wonder why EBDJ doesn't

aware of it. However, I am also aware of how incendiary the subject can be,
its definitely personal for many. With that said... Personally I've
struggled with it. It is something that is almost constantly on my mind and
something that I would very much like to be successful with. I'm heavier
than I should be for sure and I yearn to live the healthier lifestyle that
EBDJ promotes. Yet, I keep failing and falling off and gaining what I've
lost back. And I bought and read the book right when it came out! How many
years has it been? I was also reading a lot of the stuff that Grant was
talking about before EBDJ came out like Gary Taubes' books. So I've been
trying and failing for some time now. I don't know... there's a switch in
my head that needs to be duct taped off or permanently removed! I keep
trying though and what you have written here helps. Good on ya.
