I've had the frame and fork pin striped and detailed by a family member.
Haven't built it yet so, it's still in the box. We're planning a May trip
that will include a stop at RBW-WHQ where we'll have it properly
christened! I'm going to have RBW chase & face + install the headset. I
have the new wheel-set built and many of the other parts are from my
previous Ram that will find their way onto the new steed. Since I have the
Surly for go anywhere/anytime duty, the plan is to build the Ram as
a light-ish road bike.

[RBW] Alt. universal water bottle clamp

2016-04-22 Thread T.O.M.
An alternative, a bit more elegant solution perhaps? A bit of a PITA to
install but they practically disappear under the bottle cage. The Elite
VIP water bottle clamp, here and other interesting stuff:
http://www.elite-it.com/en/products/bottle-cages Note the Eroica cage!

Licktons or Lickbike used to have them but don't see them anymore.
Not sure where to find 'em but they work great. A TIP: use the shortest
screw that will do the job when mounting a bottle cage to the clamp body,
too long of a screw and the tip can come into contact with the tube below
and mar the surface. OR, use a valve ring/nut as a spacer between the cage
and the clamp, that works well also.

Really? FWIW I don't need rude replies, this post was just to point out
that there are other solutions out there. Didn't want to hijack the other
water bottle cage post, it has it's own course to follow

Moderator Jim says:
I'd ask that folks please remember that being a part of the discussion
means a polite and respectful tone in all posts. Somethings don't come
across particularly well through the written word. And as a final
suggestion, if you really have a point to make to a specific individual on
this list, perhaps that is better done directly.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Alt. universal water bottle clamp

2016-04-24 Thread T.O.M.
The VIP straps work for tubes from 1" to 2.8" according to the website.
The "pad" where the cage will attach is concave on the bottom side to mate
with the tube and the straps wrap around the tube. There is a set of pads
to protect the paint that install on the strap. I've used them on
recumbent bikes and currently have a set on our Cannondale tandem. You
will need to trim any excess strap but be careful to leave a short section
in case you ever have to remove and reinstall them.

[RBW] Re: Necro-stock! A shop with a new Rambouillet frame in stock?

2015-07-13 Thread T.O.M.
First and foremost, a big thank you to Bill for this post and for sharing
his "surprising" discovery! By that I mean, the NOS Rambouillets at Alex's
Cycles in Japan.. A little background, I'd owned and ridden
a "Rivendellicious Blue" 54cm Ram, loved that bike, but, it was* just a
tad* too big for my 5' 6" body. So I sadly let it go; the new owner a
list member had posted an ISO/WTB for a 54 Ram on this site. Shortly after
shipping the Ram to its new home, and thinking I'd never find a 52cm Ram, I
posted ISO/WTB for a 51cm Roadeo. Didn't get a single reply, not
surprised, there may not be one out in the wild in that size or if there
is the owner's not letting it go. Anyway

Tuesday July 7th, 7:13 pm Arizona time, Alex's Cycles accepts my online
order for a Blue 520mm Rambouillet..Saturday July 11th, 10:18 am
Arizona time USPS delivers a box at my front door! Someone asked: "is
Alex's Cycles legit"? YES. Another question was: "how much to ship it to
USA"? In my case, $80.60. From Osaka it came via Japan Post (EMS) to Los
Angeles, USA, after customs, USPS International Priority.

Pulled it out of the box but haven't even unwrapped it yet. It's
different box than my previous NOS 54 Ram came in. This box has large
"Rambouillet" across the side panels, and Rivendell Rambouillet,
Oakland, Made in Japan on the end panels. I will be registering the s/n
with Riv HQ, and will be sure to ask about the Alex connection. Not worried
though, I know what a Ram looks like, this is the real deal. Aren't Alex's
Cycles and Toyo both in Osaka, Japan? If you read the Alex story,
originally they had a store front, so, maybe it's how they got there?.

"that was me. i sold it complete to jordan francisco here in Bellingham
and also my AHH. Now i have a blue 54 Rambouillet and it is perfect for me"

Not sure about the quote above, but if it's in reference to my original 54
Rambouillet, mine went to the east coast ~ Oct/Nov 2014...

[RBW] Re: Almost OT, Mini Moto vs Neo Retro

2015-08-31 Thread T.O.M.
Here's another option (Canti's) from Rodriguez Cycles:
http://www.rodbikes.com/articles/bigsqueeze.html Seem to have lots of
fender clearance and perhaps allow use of your current levers. We've not
tried them thus can not provide any opinion on their effectiveness.

Our non-Riv-type tandem runs BB7 disc brakes, they're great. Do have the
Moto Lites that we briefly used on the tandem's OE wheels while we were
sorting out rim failures with the disc brake wheels. The Moto's performed
quite well while they were on; wet or dry conditions. Much better than the
(Tektro?) OE V-Brakes the bike came with. Must say though, we don't run
fenders or do any loaded touring. YMMV

Hello Mike,

Well, if you're willing to spring for an NOS/BNIB there's a few left at
Alex's Cycles in Osaka, Japan:
http://www.alexscycle.com/frames/other-en-2-3-4-5/rivendell-rambouillet-frame-and-front-fork.html?currency=USD

I recently bought a blue 52cm Ram; (have no connection to the bike shop
other than as a customer); and I'm a happy camper! I've owned and ridden a
54cm Rambouillet that was just a tad too large. I'm 5'6", PBH of 78.5.
Usually ride an 50 or 51cm on 700c wheels. I'm expecting the 52cm Ram with
559mm wheels will be perfect for me.

Paid via PayPal and had an international transaction fee of ~$10,
shipping (~$80) via Japan Post/USPS Priority Express. 5 days total from
order to delivery at my front door! The bike spent one of those days at US
Customs in Los Angeles, CA but as of yet have not gotten billed for
any customs dutiesand it's been at least a month or more.

After I sold my 54cm Ram, posted (~Oct 2014) an ISO/WTB for a 51cm Roadeo,
got zero replies, good luck finding a used one in that size!

[RBW] Re: T.O.M. How'd your Rambouillet turn out?

2017-11-03 Thread T.O.M.
Sad to say, it's still in the box. Lots of changes in our life since I
bought it. Moved to a new home with MILQ's & brought my elderly In-Laws
in. But, that's just an excuse, getting closer to a build now that the
move is approaching the 1year mark and things is settlin' down.

I'm so glad you are sharing pics of the new adventures that my 'ol Rambo is
now creating for you! She looks beautiful in her new surrounding, thank
you for taking loving care of her.

Cheers,
Manny (T.O.M. or The Other Manny)
P.S. Thanks for asking

[RBW] Re: Micro cracks on Velocity Dyad rim

2020-07-04 Thread T.O.M. (The Other Manny)
We've been there with Velocity wheels, a different wheel although the same
problem. What happened to us (on our tandem) was that the inner tube
escaped through the crack just enough to cause an explosive blowout with of
course instant pressure loss. Luckily we were on level pavement and
slowing down for an upcoming "ess" curve and were able to stop
uneventfully. Had it happened negotiating the curve, results would have
been much different. It ruined the tire BTW.

We were riding a MUP between condos and a golf course, the blowout was
loud enough to echo off the buildings (gunshot loud) that we may have
caused some golfers to miss their shot!!!

Velocity has been very good about either replacing the entire wheel or
sending a new rim to our LBS to rebuild under warranty.

Well, you're riding my original Ram. My NOS Rambo is still in the box,
long story. Anyway, when I bought the NOS frame/fork, the shop had given
the original fork to a warranty customer thus I received a gray primer
coated fork. A friend with a Hot Rod Body & Paint Shop shot the fork &
detailed the lugs. He used Pro Color Match Equipment and ended up using Du
Pont ChromaBase automotive paint.

I have an 52 cm Ram, it has 26" wheels (as were the 50 cm IIRC),
originally had a 54 cm that had 700c wheels. Sold it; was a bit too big
for me, wheel size was part of the stand-over/fit problem.
