[RBW] Re: Tips for Bikepacking with a backpack?

Patrick,
I haven't tried bikepaking with backpack, but when I was in the military we
skied with very heavy backpacks and it was so very important to back the
heavy items down low. So I think your "back heavy bits down low" is very
sound advice.

[RBW] Re: game changer dyno hub, bikes, cars, being green etc.

2011-01-27 Thread Shawn
Charlie,
Being a little picky here, but fossil fuels will never totally run
out. Peak Oil is about extraction not keeping up with demand and
energy returned on energy invested (EROEI). IMO our biggest concern
with Peak Oil and recourse depletion should be with the warfare that
will accompany the competition between nations rushing to secure
access to the remaining resources. If you have not read the 2010 Joint
Operating Environment (JOE), published by JFCOM, I urge you to do so.
In the report the military says, “By 2012, surplus oil production
capacity could entirely disappear, and as early as 2015, the shortfall
in output could reach nearly 10 MBD” The military goes on to say that
humanity's next few decades will be filled with warfare. The German
Bundeswehr has given a similar assessment of the world energy
situation. IMO we are already feeling the effects of recourse
depletion, 9/11, Iraq War, food riots etc... Who knows how it will all
play out? But one thing is for certain, this is very serious and no
magic technology is going to save us and allow us to maintain business
as usual. Mother Nature does not care about what we want or think we
deserve. Mother Nature only deals in reality and that reality can
sometimes be very cruel.

[RBW] Tire size

2009-10-14 Thread Shawn

I know that RBW geometry chart recommends 32mm as the minimum tire
size for the AHH, but I was wondering if anybody has used or is using
a smaller tire than 32mm on their AHH.

[RBW] Return ride

2009-10-17 Thread Shawn

I just spent the last seven months in Africa and was unable to ride,
so I wanted to give a report on my first ride after seven months of
not being able to ride.

After two days of taking care of other business, I love my bike, but
other things do come first, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I decided
I would take my AHH out for a twenty mile spin on the local rails to
trail. At first I thought that the distance might be a little much,
not because I wasn't in good enough physical shape to do twenty miles,
but more because I was worried how my rear end, neck, back and harms
would feel. I was worried that I would have to get used to riding
again.

After twenty miles I felt great and the bike rode as good as I
remembered. Grant is right, there should be no getting used to a bike
if it fits right. Anyone that is contemplating purchasing a Rivendell
would be well served to listen to them or their dealers about sizing
and fit, they have a system and it works.

While over seas I was able to save enough money to purchase an
Atlantis frame and I will be building it up over the winter. I am
building the bike myself to try and improve my bike mechanic skills. I
am sure I will be asking quite a few questions on here, so thanks in
advance for the help.

It is great to be home and riding again. Being in Africa for seven
months just re-enforces for me how fortunate we Americans are.

[RBW] Introduction from Austin, TX

HI All,
I have been lurking here for a few weeks, and thought I would finally
introduce myself. Although I do not currently own a Rivendell (I'm in
Grad school) I do have two Bridgestones and hope that I will be
welcome here. I definitely subscribe to the Rivendell/Grant Petersen
philosophy and look forward to participating in future conversations.

[RBW] AHH as a road bike

2009-12-03 Thread Shawn
Now that I have the Atlantis, I have been thinking of making my Hilsen
more of a roadish type bike to use on week-end rides with my friends
on our smooth local MUP. Can anyone tell me how the AHH might handle,
ride and look with 25mm to 28mm tires on it. I know most people don't
ride that skinny of a tire but any feed back would be appreciated. I
am trying to separate the two bikes into two distinct categories;
Atlantis- touring, camping, commuter= big tires; Hilsen- club rides,
events, exercise, go faster=skinner tires. It seems like the Hilsen’s
clearance are wasted now that I have the Atlantis.

I know it sounds like I want a more traditional type road bike and the
Roadeo would fit that bill perfectly, except there is the matter of
finances, can’t sell the Hilsen to totally finance the Roadeo, and I
am not crazy about the fact the Roadeo does not have brazeons for at
least a Mark type rack.

Is the Rambouillet a better road bike than the Hilsen? If so maybe I
should trade or sell my Hilsen for a Rambouillet. I want to be clear
that I do not want to race, I just want to make a clear distinctions
between the two bikes.

Sorry about the long post and thanks in advance for any advice or
feedback.
Shawn

[RBW] Re: AHH as a road bike

2009-12-03 Thread Shawn
Good point, I do love the Hilsen, I was just under the impression that
the Ram was more of a road type of bike than the Hilsen. I will
definitely experiment with different types of tires and set ups before
I do any trading or selling.

[RBW] Re: Cold weather commuting clothing?

2009-12-07 Thread shawn
I am really appreciating this thread. Here in ATX we have had
unusually cold and wet days. It is making my Texas blood feel thinner
than it already is. I still have not mastered the "perfect" riding
combo. But, I am gathering some great ideas here. For one, I realized
recently that I need more of a light shell instead of the outer layer
of the parka I have been wearing. The trickiest part seems to be
figuring out how to dress warm enough, but not sweat so as to not end
up with the chills later as I start to cool down.

[RBW] Re: Cold weather commuting clothing?

2009-12-08 Thread shawn
It seems based on the thread thus far, wool is ideal. One thing I am
not clear on is, if a wool base layer is worn with cotton over it,
will the base layer still wick away the sweat, or will the cotton soak
it up? Or is wearing multiple layers of wool the only option to stay
warm and dry?
Coming from a cost perspective, it seems if one can afford just one
wool base layer and then wear regular clothes (i.e.-cotton) over it
then it might be a little easier to "swallow" the cost of the wool.

Funny you should mention Chicago, that's why I bought the parka in the
first place. My family is strewn all about the North Shore, Evanston,
Willmette, Morton Grove, Glenview, etc...

Yeah, I was hoping I could get away with the parka so as to avoid
buying something else for riding. The lotion is a great idea. Here in
Texas, putting lotion on in the summer always makes me sweat, but
maybe in these colder months it would really help insulate. I'll give
it a try.

Hey Trent,
Yes, it was quite a night! It was great to meet you, your wife, &

Russ & Laura did a stellar job of making touring seem much easier than
I ever thought possible. I feel inspired, for sure.

[RBW] Re: racks vs. paint

Hey Shawn!
What a beauty your steed is! Man, I TOTALLY feel you on this. I, too
have a black rack that I wish was silver. The only reason it doesn't
bother me quite as much is because I have great panniers on it that
"hide" the black a little. I say sell it and get what you REALLY want.
When you spend as much as you do for your Riv, you want to be able to
look at it and have zero regrets. I am plan on replacing mine with a
shiny steel rack just as soon as I can. Hopefully by June. You might
lose a little $$, but 1 year form now, it won't matter. Good luck!!
I look forward to hearing what you decide to do.

[RBW] Re: One reason for us to like bigger tires

2010-07-25 Thread Shawn
I recently had a problem with my rear tire (JB Green). My LBS said it
was a fractured casing? I have never heard of it, but anyway the LBS
said it was caused by hitting a rock or stone just right. Does this
sound right? The tire had less than a 1k miles on it, a new one is in
the mail.

At least we can ride on gravel. Recently some friends of my wife and I
rode their bikes, new Trek road bikes, to our house to meet up for
breakfast and a ride. When they arrived I seen they were walking their
bikes down our 800ft gravel drive. I couldn't help myself, I opened up
the front door and yelled, " You are suppose to ride bikes", we all
laughed.

[RBW] Re: Headset and bottom bracket life expectancy

2012-04-02 Thread shawn
Jim,
Thanks for the reply. The reason I asked was because a friend of mine
bought a Trek carbon fiber road bike last year and after 2200 miles
had to replace the headset, bottom bracket and rear cassette. My
friend acted like this was normal, but I wasn't sure since my Atlantis
has over 4,000 miles and everything is fine. I was thinking that 2200
miles was kind of too soon to have these types of issues, but I wasn't
sure if others riders were getting the same results as I was. Thanks
again for the reply.

[RBW] Help choosing a bike

2013-04-07 Thread shawn
Apologizes for this is not being a Riv question, but me, my son and another
friend are doing the GAP/ C&O next month. And now my soon to be son-in law
will be coming along. I am quite pleased that he is able to come along, but
the problem is he does not have a bike. I would love to buy him a
Rivendell, but that is just not in the budget. So I am looking for
suggestion for a used bike that I could pick up that would be well suited
for this ride. I am eyeing a local 1984 Specialized Rockhopper that is 19
inch model. My son- in laws PBH 81.28 cm, would a 19 inch mountain bike be
a good fit for him? What LHT size would be best for him?
Thanks in advance

Jim,

The New Trent certainly looks like a very good solution. The manufacture of
Bike Revolution claims that “At only 9 MPH (14.4 km/h), charging is a fast
as a wall powered charger.” The problem is I know very little about the
charging requirements of my devices or electronics in general. Until I
learn more, I think I might just go with something like the New Trent for
my GAP C&O tour next month.

Thanks

[RBW] Re: Dynamo USB charger

2013-04-18 Thread shawn
Kelly,
>From the manufactures FAQ on their web site.

“ Why does it take 10 seconds for charging to begin?”

“Some devices, such as the iPhone, require a minimum amount of power to
charge correctly. If charging begins before input power is sufficient, the
device may refuse to charge. The 10 seconds delay gives you time to reach a
minimum speed. This allows you to charge and iPhone or other devices that
would not otherwise charge correctly."

Do you think that would address the issue of starting and stopping? I have
asked the manufacture to specifically address stopping and starting again.

Thanks

[RBW] Dynamo charging system

2013-05-15 Thread shawn
For those of you who may be looking into a charging system for your dynamo
hub I thought I would share my recent experience with The Bright Bike
Revolution. http://www.brightbikelabs.com/products/bright-bike-revolution

Last week I used the Revolution on a GAP-C&O tour and it performed
perfectly. The Revolution kept our Iphones charged throughout the tour,
even during two days of solid rain. Here is a picture of it mounted to my
bike.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/greenwayrider/8741419984/in/photostream

The Revolution worked as advertised and thus far it seems to be a viable
solution for those who would like to have the capability to charge their
electronic devices from a dynamo hub.
Cheers
Shawn

I cannot for the life of me get the rear cassette to shift into the largest
two cogs. The drive train is as follows:
Sugino XD-2 46/36/24, Shimano cassettes- 9 Speed 12-36t, Shimano Deore LX

I believe my chain line is ok. Any suggestions would be greatly

William,
That is great info. I could have certainly done that with the washer, I
wasn't even aware of this. I am novice bike mechanic at best. However I
wasn't able to shift into the largest two cogs in friction mode either.

[RBW] Re: WTB 47cm - 50 cm Rivendell

2012-11-30 Thread shawn
A quick update on my search for a Rivendell for my wife. I
was originally only looking for an Atlantis, Sam or AHH, but ended up with
both a 50 cm Betty Foy and a 51 cm Atlantis that was on e-bay. How did my
wife get so lucky you might ask. After I thought I had lost out on the
Atlantis I found the great deal on Josh Ratner's Betty Foy and after having
the wife tell me the Betty was her dream bike I decided to make her dream
come true and purchased the Betty. Two days after purchasing the Betty
I received a nasty note from E-bay saying I haven't paid for the Atlantis.
What happened was there was a glitch with the "buy it now" and pay pal
making me think I lost out on the purchase when in fact I had not. So now
my wife has both an Atlantis and a Betty Foy.

I am now on a parts search for both bikes. For the Betty I am looking for a
165mm triple crank, Albatross bars, pedals, bar end shifters and a honey
Brooks b67. I basically need everything for the Atlantis. Thanks in advance
for any help with the parts search.
Cheers
Shawn

I am building the wife's Betty Foy and Atlantis up right now, so no

I have the same rack- bag combination and IMO the two do not work the best

[RBW] Re: Roadeo vs. Hilsen performance differences?

2013-01-22 Thread shawn
Michael,
I currently own a 59 cm Roadeo and have owned a 59 cm Hilsen in the past. I
would say that on a whole the Roadeo is more responsive and quicker, but
that is probably more to do with the way I have-had the two bikes set up. I
replaced with the Hilsen with an Atlantis and I now feel like I have the
best of both worlds with the Atlantis and Roadeo. If you can only have one
or the other I would go with the Hilsen. The Roadeo is a great bike, but
the Hilsen is much more versatile and IMO plenty "fast enough".

Michael,
Do you have a photo of the front fender not conforming the way you would
like it to? The reason I ask is because I am in the process of installing
longboards on my wife's Betty and would like to see some of the possible
fit issues. My first test fit had the front of the fender forward of the
brake tilting upward. I am waiting on new tires before I do the final
install.

Dan,
Did you mount the fender in back of the fork crown? I am assuming you did
since you used a Sheldon fender nut. My wife's Betty is a 50cm as well and
I thought the fenders would be too long to mount in the back of the fork
crown. A photo of your Betty showing the fenders mounted would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks

[RBW] Re: Big Apples for GAP and C&O tour

2013-02-18 Thread shawn
All thanks for the input. I am glad to hear that many of you have ridden
this ride with BA and were happy with their performance. I have only ridden
a short distance on the BAs and they feel great, especially going down my
long rough gravel drive way. I was concerned that the tires might be too
heavy and slow, but again it is a tour and not a race. After reading a few
of the comments about mud on the C&O, I am starting to wonder if I might be
better with the Big or Little Ben tire. I worked really hard to get my 60mm
Berthoud installed with the 50mm BAs and was concerned that if I did drop
down in tire size the fenders would not look right with smaller tires. Here
is a pic of my Atlantis.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/greenwayrider/8483800970/in/photostream

I know this is subjective, but what is the smallest tire you can run with
60mm Berthound fenders and maintain a good fender line?

Thanks

[RBW] Hilly Hundred

2011-08-13 Thread Shawn
My son and I are going to ride the Hilly Hundred for the first time
this year. I will be riding my Atlantis and my son will be riding his
Trek 2200r. My son asked why I was not riding my carbon fiber
Cannondale Synapse. I told him someone has to ride a real bike to
carry all of our support gear. Anyway, I plan on riding on Jack Brown
Green tires and was wondering if this is a good choice for this type
of ride? The Jack Browns have been good to me so far.

Thanks
