[RBW] Re: Rivendell Atlantis

2011-03-18 Thread Roger
I seem to remember in the early 00's that Sheldon Brown was lobbying
hard for Rivendell to shorten top tubes, and that people on forums
would chorus in on that. That may or may not be germane, though.

Nobody really needed me to pile on, but yet, for a step by step

Brandt if I want some theory or in-depth explanations.

I remember when I finished grad school and could hardly read for

Alice Starmore on Fair Isle knitting and a book on tile setting) were
all that kept me reading when I didn't have to.

[RBW] Re: Grant's "Velosophy"...

I wonder if digital/audio versions are done at Amazon, the publisher,
or the author's prerogative?
If I were the author, I would want to control which proprietary media

2011-05-13 Thread Roger
More curious than anything else. I'm not sure but I thInk only Waterfords have
undertubes, and a 64cm monotube would have a quite long head tube for current
Rivthink.

I recently rode a 64cm Hillborne and it felt nice and big compared to my 65cm
Mercian, which has a much shorter headtube and a jacked up Technomic.

[RBW] Re: Watter bottle recommendations?

2011-06-15 Thread Roger
I like that the Iris is stiffest at the top of the cage where it can
best restrain the bottle. My old Riv Aellee's (sp?) are quite rattly
with a Klean Kanteen because the whole cage pivots from the bottom
edge of the cage.

The only flaw I see with myfavorite Iris/KK 28oz wide mouth combo is
that the King cages don't have a tab for strap mounting. One of my
bikes has cage mounts on the down tube but not seat tube, and I need
straps to attach a bottle cage.

I see that VO says of their Moderniste that the "newer, stronger
version cannot be used with bottle cage clamps" so even if they are
now made better, they no longer would solve my only issue with King.
Pity...

[RBW] Re: HS

2011-06-18 Thread Roger
I've wanted more saddle setback on every bike I've ever owned, and
I've read it's the front derailleur's expected operating range that
makes bike designers shy away from seat tube angles shallower than 72
degrees.

I had a single speed frame made by Mercian with a 71 degree seat tube
angle and by the time I slam a B17 all the way back it gives my
favorite position of any bike I've ridden. Still, being a heavy guy,
I'd rather have the saddle rails centered on the clamp (not maxed to
one end) so a slacker seat tube angle would be welcome for me.

I feel the same way about the SA 8-speed I have and its twist shifter.
I tried using a friction thumbshifter with it but had too many bad
shifts. I see that J-Tek has taken it upon themselves to do what SA
should have. Maybe I'll spring for the $125 barend shifter some time
and put the SA back into service.

 Does anyone prefer twist shifters?

2011-06-20 Thread Roger
"I'm not familiar with the SA 8-speed. Is the shifter indexed or just
the hub?"

The SA 8-speed hub isn't indexed, but it definitely wants to be
centered into each gear without much feedback. Supposedly Sheldon
Brown could do it, but like 99% of the things Sheldon could do, it was
beyond my skills. I miss Sheldon.

Part of the allure of the thumbshifter (which would be about equal
with a barend shifter) was that I used the wheel/cable/shifter setup
as a self-contained module that I could have on or off of my single
speed bike in a couple of minutes with nothing but 2 or 3 zipties for
the cable and tightening the shifter clamp on the bar. Except for the
constant "is it in or out of gear" fiddliness and ker-chunking out of
gear under load it was great. I'd like a clamp-on downtube shifter
best of all for this concept.

What's the top tube length on that?
Some very tall frames from that era are not so long. I have a

[RBW] Re: wow

2011-07-06 Thread Roger
Many Sturmey Archer IGH's are designed around the traditional oln of
120mm, making them easy to swap in to bikes like the Quickbeam. In a
few minutes time one could change out a single speed rear wheel with
an SA RF8 8-speed wheel/cable/shifter unit.

The cable stop attaches to the hub assembly and the whole thing can go
and off as a unit. I use a couple of zip ties to secure the cable to
the down tube for easy removal. It looks like the new Jtek shifter
would be a great, if pricey, way to use a barend for those (like me)
who don't like grip shifters.

The new 3-speed fixed comes with a barend, and a duomatic kickback
wouldn't even need a cable.

[RBW] Re: Supplier of quality waxed canvas?

2013-09-29 Thread Roger
I looked into buying some #8 Martexin Original Wax from them recently. But
after paying the $21 for one yard, there would then be a minimum $30 small
order handling charge. Plus, I haven't made the phone call, but it's not
clear they will sell less than 5 yards.

Fairfield is set up as a wholesale suppplier, which is great, but at least
my humble Google-Fu skills have not turned up any small volume retailer of
wax duck who is set up to serve the hobbyist.
Seems like Martexin cotton duck would be perfect for a cottage industry to
offer in small amounts, or as a group buy.

I've been doing a little bit of coffee riding lately.
This Friday, I stopped off on the East Bay Trail for a break.

I use a trangia stove and a diy caldera-style cone that wraps around the
Klean Kanteen in its Iris Cage.
Pictures prove the Klean Kanteen gets a bit
blackened,

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell BBH visit

2013-11-03 Thread Roger
Open combs like that nice Merkur are nice razors. They shave nice and
close, and don't clog so easily when one hasn't shaved for several days.

For Patrick and others, shaving is a regressive technology (now geared
primarily towards marketing advances) and many believe that unless you want
to go all the way to a straight edge, that the double-edged razor blade is
the next best thing.

Great razor blades can still be bought as cheaply as disposables (10 cents
to 50 cents a blade that will last for perhaps 5 to 10 or more shaves), and
the razors themselves (essentially blade holders) from the 1910s to 1970s
that one finds in antique stores and thrift stores can be as good or better
than those made today.

My two favorite razors are a refurbished Gillette open comb at least 50
years old, and a Merkur Slant razor I bought in an antique shop in Luling
Texas. I think it was made in Germany in the 1930s.

As for blades, each brand is slightly different: some too sharp, some too
dull, some quite stiff, some flexible... I like 7 o'clock most of the time,
but go for the Kai or Feather if I really want to...carefully... shave
really closely.

2013-11-03 Thread Roger
Ironically, your photo is called "The Old" but I believe that was a razor
that debuted in 1929 and was named "The New"

Here's some fun reading:
http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Gillette%20Rasierer.htm

Funnily, the razor that preceded "The New" was "The New Improved".
The easiest way to distinguish "The New" from previous models is that it
was the first Gillette not to have the two "vampire teeth" blade centering
pins on the underside of the razor.

To me, "The New" was the pinnacle of Gillette technology, better than the
very aggressive razors that came before it and better than all the later
solid bar (i.e. not open comb) razors of later decades.

Re: [RBW] Re: PDX Sunrise Coffee Club Tomorrow

2013-11-05 Thread Roger
Thanks Paul

Yeah, I just carry the trangia (filled with enough fuel) in whatever bag
I'm using at that moment. Trangia, matches and a baggie of coffee grounds
is all I need to carry that isn't carried on the Klean Kanteen itself.

As for the cone, I find the key is the rivet. Other cones and screens I've
had flounced around like a loose spring until fully set up, but the rivet
holds the cone's shape to only expanding/contracting at the bottom for use
or storage. With nothing more than the rivet and a spoke to hold the
Kanteen the right distance above the Trangia, it is a very stable structure.

I don't really know much about percolating coffee. I pretty much use the
method Russ Roca suggested in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4GTLDBei5w

As an aside, I use two Kanteens, one for boiling and one for
brewing/drinking just because that's what I already carried on the bike.
One could boil and brew in just the uninsulated bottle. One could also just
boil in the bottle and then use the hot water for a different coffee making
system. Or, even tea.

I keep a small carton of milk or half and half in the freezer to take with

It thaws over time, certainly long enough to still have some ice the next

[RBW] Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Almost Blue

2014-03-30 Thread Roger
I’ve been a Rivendell member since 1997. I’ve outfitted my bikes in
Rivendell-inspired ways with many Riv-bought parts, and during the time
that Rivendell frames only came out at a trickle and there was a year long
waiting list for the Longlow I wanted in 1999, I even used Riv specs as
possible on my Mercians. But I’ve never actually had a Rivendell frame
until now.

On Friday I took out for a first ride the Sam Hillborne 62cm in Sage Green
that I picked up recently. I built it up with parts on hand as possible,
and it came out as Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Almost
Blue.

Something Old

The first talk I had with Grant in 1997 was about how I just couldn’t
relate to index shifting and 8 speeds – and I was indignant that there was
9 and rumors of 10 speeds about to further complicate my life. He suggested
a Phil 7 speed, 135 oln hub for the bike I had then. I’ve built that hub as
both a 26” and 700c wheel for a few different bikes over the years. It
still rolls very smoothly and, a new 13-28 freewheel cluster, I’m glad to
bring that first bond with Rivendell on board this bike.

Something New

I’ve been told that derailers have improved in the last twenty years, so
have current models of Deore rear and CX-70 front derailers. Sam also has
the long reach Tektro calipers that made him possible as a non-cantilever
bike (not that I wouldn’t have preferred him as a cantilever…). I also am
so far liking the new Barlow tires.

Something Borrowed

I had intended and still may someday use a Sugino AT crank I had squirreled
away, but it turns out a 107mm bottom bracket comes with the Hillborne. In
order to streamline things and utilize this bottom bracket already in
there, I borrowed an old Ritchey Logic crank from the Vigorelli , and
cleaned up 46 and 34 tooth rings for it. Fits perfectly! And will probably
stay until I need some lower gears for a camping trip.

Almost Blue

Yep, it’s just got a nice ring in it to say almost blue. Also, the color
seems equally greenish-blue as bluish-green to me. I’ll call it Almost Blue.

I’ve always liked Moustache Bars and wanted to start off this bike with
this maligned and recently abandoned bar. I’ve found over the years that
when I’m tinkering with bikes, they tend to shed barends, noodles, and
especially albatrosses, in favor of Moustache Bars and DT shifters.
Unfortunately, Sam doesn’t support downtubers, so we’ll see how that works
out.

First ride was 15 miles of positive. I need the bars a little higher/closer
than the stem on hand allows, and I’m not sure about the plethora of cables
to reach through to get to the front bag (even though I like the non-aero
Superbe levers otherwise). I also need to get that saddle back a little
farther.
Good Times!

[RBW] Re: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Almost Blue

2014-03-30 Thread Roger
Thanks for the kind words everyone. The Sam Hillborne is indeed a handsome
bike. I believe I got the last 62cm in this color, with the next batch, in
the standard blue I'm told, not arriving for a little while.

Today I went for a spin with the seat set back a little further and found
it closer to where I usually set the saddle. I like a lot of setback, it
helps me to balance my upper body without putting too much weight on my
hands and arms.

[RBW] Re: Sugino XD Single Chainring Bottom Bracket Width.

2014-04-04 Thread Roger
Around 1998, Grant set me up with a Sugino AT and a 115 spindle for use as
a single (remember when Riv used to sell cool old NOS parts?). I believe I
used a 3mm spacer to get clearance where the chainring bolts mount. This
was for use with a 126mm rear hub. I'm not sure if a modern 130/135mm
spacing would need a little more clearance at the crank.

Re: [RBW] FS: Sam Hillborne - 60cm

2014-04-15 Thread Roger
My wife asked me to let the forum to know she is baffled at this one bike
concept and not in agreement.

She peppered me with questions about how this would work: how would I get
to work if my bike broke down, how would I get exercise, how would I have
the right bike for shopping and a weekend ride?

I told her I had four running bikes and she replied that it seemed like at
minimum five was a decent limit - not that she was counting...

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillars?

2010-12-04 Thread Roger
"It's a 62cm and I'm hoping for a parallel top-tube as opposed to the
other."

Is this on the table for discussion with Rivendell?

I know I felt gut-punched when I fell for the first grey/red and grey/
orange prototype photos and then that proto got the rug pulled out
from under it. Luckily (if you are very desperately looking for a
silver lining), my finances took a reversal and it was made a moot
question. The Bombadil complete diagonal seems very right, but,
well...I don't want to be run off this forum after one of my first
posts by dissenting on the Diagopillar ;^)

I did see a beautiful parallel tubed Sam Hillborne at Riv HQ the other
day. If it accepted bigger tires, slightly different geometry and was
otherwise Hunqa-like...

[RBW] Re: Which Rivendell bike?

2010-12-08 Thread Roger
If you're nimble and on the lighter side, perhaps a Roadeo would fit
the bill, as it is the successor to the Legolas, with a few notable
changes like bb height and brake type. Mostly, I say this mostly
because I just want to plug Vaughn's "Walking the Dog" youtube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkNyN0j_cfo

That's a fun-looking style of nimble riding on a lightweight bike.
Probably about the equivalent of my weight on a Hunqapillar...

Backordered! Again!

I got my phone call a couple of weeks ago, but foolishly told Spencer
(Spencer's back! If Joe Bauder answered my next call it'd be just old
times) that I'd come by in just a few days and no need to set any
aside. Neither of us thought they could sell out a second time...

Hey, a question for those decisive people who cast their rods when
there were fish in the pond: do splats help protect from those
chilling cold winter breezes? I was riding in sub-50 degree weather
(and that's Fahrenheit!) and my tootsies got cold.

[RBW] Re: Tires.... what to buy

2011-01-08 Thread Roger
I've been really liking my Marathon Supreme 42-622s (measure about
37.5), but they're too big too fit inside of my fenders. Currently,
I'm using GB Cypres that measure almost 32, but I'm hoping to shoehorn
an in-between size tire in.

What do people think of Racers vs. Kojak's vs. Supremes?

The Racer and Kojak seem to fill about the same niche, except for a
wee bit of pattern. I'd probably try a Racer because there's a 40-622
(I imagine these measure about 35), where the 35-622 that come in both
the Racer and Kojak are probably about the same size as the Cypres,
only perhaps more durable. Maybe I should get Supremes in 37-622 and
be done with it, though.

Thoughts?

Yeah, and the large sizes are slowly contracting back to conventional
standards as time progresses - but they're still the best selection in
the business (VO told me they had no plans to make a larger frame "at
least this year" ). When I mentioned Bhima's name to Jay several
months ago, he said "sorry, I don't know who that is." I had to turn
it into a joke with "well, everything I know about Rivendell is ten
years old."

Bhima may have been the early booster of really large tires, too. I
remember talking with him, and I can't document it, but I seem to
remember Grant writing about how "Bhima just swears by those Big
Apples on his Atlantis." Did Bhima also get the first double top tube
bike? Probably not, I'd bet a custom was first, but his was the first
paratube Riv I remember seeing a photo of, anyway.

One of the most unfortunate aspects of so much of Rivendell's ad copy,
product descriptions and musings being on their website instead of in
print is how ephemeral it all is. Every now and then I go to the site
to try to re-remember something that I have a foggy memory of, and see
it's modified or gone. The S24O info, for instance, is much more
expansive in readers than what is now on the site. Much of the advice
was tied in with products - and once the products are no longer for
sale everything disappears. The cyclofiend site is the single best
online source for obsolete Riv copy that I know, and I hope that it
continues. Heck, I looked up the old Bike Pro online catalog recently,
and it's still a great resource even though it's probably been out of
business for over 10 years.

[RBW] Re: Skewers?

2011-01-08 Thread Roger
Okay, this is heresy, but I have a hard time seeing a quick release
skewer as having any value except to racers with numb fingers at the
top of a mountain. If I lose 30 seconds every time I flat, I'll live
with that. The allen wrench I keep in my tool kit is a simpler and
lighter way to tighten a skewer than a cam, and I don't need one for
every wheel I own. For security, the allen wrench is better, and any
of the locking skewers is better yet. Lastly, quick releases have a
long handle that legend says could grab objects and cause a wreck.

I've liked the Kore/Onguard locking skewers for some time, and I don't
even know what brand the allen key skewers are. I hope these are all
still in production. PJW sells Pitlocks, which look like a system
similar to Kore/Onguard.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Front Racks

2011-01-08 Thread Roger
I've been eyeballing low rider front racks.

For the first couple of years Rivendell sold the Nitto Campee with the
bolt on low riders, and had a simple low rider only with hoop in
development (Reader 15, page 13) but at some point decided to eschew
the low and go high. I wonder what made them see the high rider
religion?

I have a Carradice Limpet, the rackless, velcro and hop-mount bags,
but unfortunately I've just never come to love it. When I find a good
deal or trade on a rack, I want to switch out the Limpet. I'm sure
with global economies and such $220 is the fair price for a Nitto
Campee, but that's not in the budget right now. VO says they have
something in development but can't discuss it's design or timing.

Haldeman's explanation of "used motor oil" on saddles comes right up

The typography story was great. Because of that article, I spent a lot

And, I sat though an interesting but quite dry film called Helvetica.

[RBW] WTT for a Nitto Campee lowrider front rack

2011-01-14 Thread Roger
Hi all,
I'm hoping someone has a Nitto Campee front rack with the detachable
low riders that they could part with, like were sold early on by Riv
and more recently by a few shops like Ben's and Box Dog. If the
elusive Campee didn't materialize, I'd also be open to discuss other
lowrider front racks.

I have several things in trade that may be of interest, and a cash
infusion could be used to even out a trade as well. For consideration,
I have:

- Nitto Rear Rack - the earlier style without the perhaps unnecessary
triangulating gussets
- Nitto Campee rear rack with the detachable low riders
- Mark's Rack - this could come with or without a Wald Basket
- Wald quicky-disconnect handlebar basket - Riv sold these a few years
ago. They are humbler than the Nitto racks.
- Carradice Camper - the green Riv-only version from around 1998 or
so.
- Carradice Limpet integrated front pannier/rack system - especially
made for frames that don't easily take a rack

All have light to medium use. If there is any interest, it would give
me the impetus to finally get some images into my Flickr account.

Thanks,
Roger

[RBW] Re: WTT for a Nitto Campee lowrider front rack

2011-01-15 Thread Roger
I looked through old Riv Readers and catalogs and found what I think
you're talking about on RR #8 page 24. It reminds me of the Rene Herse
front rack in the latest Bicycle Quarterly. I'm glad you shared your
thoughts on it, because while it sounds very cool, it wouldn't suit my
needs. Good advice! Thanks Angus.

What I didn't find is the line drawing my mind pictures so clearly of
a Riv add of the Campee with lowriders like I had meant. Maybe I just
have a faulty memory...

Anyway, you're right, the current design that several shops sell is
the one I had in mind, and really want.
A couple of people inquired off list about buying the rear racks, but
I'm really hoping someone will come forward with a front lowrider. I'm
holding off on selling the rear racks, but the Mark's rack, Wald or
the Carradice Camper could go to good homes. The Limpet can go once a
lowrider happens - it's perfectly functional in the meantime, but
ultimately not to my taste.

Since the Nitto lowrider hasn't materialized so far, I'd also be happy
to talk about other brands of front lowrider (Tubus, Jandd, Gordon,
etc). Preferably a trade, but for sale is open for discussion, too.

the "a bit more here and there." He wrote like he was talking with
adults, and I liked the challenge of learning the meaning of concepts,
names and numbers that at first were way over my head.

I think the issue with stating the manufacturer and property of
materials is the implied accusation he senses that a lower number is
less good or a less famous name is less good. We're not privy to the
original note that sparked it off, but I enjoyed reading about GP's
thought processes in spec'ing tubes in today's internet post as much
as I did in print way back when. The reason to not use a hardened seat
tube was worth the admission on its own.

Very cute!

I live in a very wooly-centric home - in fact, the Mrs. is at Stitches

make garments like this.

What with the recent discussion of the supposedly uber-scratchy

[RBW] Yet _even more_ travel coffee questions!

As a continuation of this last winter/spring's thread "Yet more travel

it seems the Helix Coffee Dripper
 sold by
Ocean Air and others is coming onto the scene. Do any of us here have much
experience with it that they could share?

For myself, I don't put paper or plastic into the path of my hot coffee, so
it would take a metal travel filter to make this filter holder happen, but
maybe that's available ... or tinker-able (!) Still, except for the paper,
I'm very intrigued by this elegant solution.

[RBW] WTB: Panniers

2014-05-11 Thread Roger
I'm looking for a nice set of panniers that I'd use with Nitto lowriders.
My first thought is for waxed canvas, and along the lines of Swift or
Carsick. There seem to be a great many good bag makers these days.

I'll mostly use these just for camping, along with a Hoss saddlebag and a
medium ShopSack, so they needn't push the upper edge on capaciousness nor
push the limit on technical features.

The pannier shown in this
photoas
 a reference is a home project bag that measures about 12 x 14 x 8 when
fully stuffed as shown.

Anyone have bags that need a new home?

[RBW] Re: Garage sale grabs?

2014-06-07 Thread Roger
There were a few beautiful complete bikes: a Betty Foy, robin's egg blue
with red fills, and the recent proto-Hunqa. Both may have found forever
homes today.

I got a single Sprint shifter and used Phil bottom bracket. Just yesterday
I was about to mail order a different shifter and bracket, but these even
more perfectly suited my needs for a bike I'm repurposing for utility
riding.

I also got what I believe was a Baggins handlebar bag from about 10 years
ago which was designed to work with the handlebar bracket I've had waiting
for about...10 years...for a bag. I'd bought just the bracket and meant to
make a bag; another project that didn't ever come to fruition.

I've always wanted a Huret Jubilee shifter, as it's said to have a very
good movement, but moreso because it may be the most beautiful shifter I've
seen. Got one, but don't have an immediate use for it, though.

I didn't buy the can of black beans, but did get some tubes, t shirts, a
wooly sweater, and a blow up pillow.

Good times.

[RBW] Marin Camping on Entmoot's Eve (Friday Night)

2014-06-20 Thread Roger

Twas the Night Before Entmoot - or - Howdy Friday Night Campers!

I’m looking to ride up into Marin from San Francisco in the early afternoon
of July 11.

The main China Camp reservation starts on Saturday (thanks Jim!), but I’d
like to camp on Friday Night with others of us attending the Riv Jamboree.
I don’t have a site yet (and they’re scarce) so I’d like to either join up
with any of us who already have a site in the area, or to quickly secure a
site for any of us not yet set. In a quick look, it seems Tomales Bay has
sites, but they’re less easy to find in Southern Marin or Angel’s Camp
itself.

Anyone who either already has or needs a campsite for Friday night – let’s
talk about it.

Roger

Re: [RBW] Marin Camping on Entmoot's Eve (Friday Night)

Thanks Lee
I've biked into Taylor several times and found once they cut it off (at 7 I
believe). Two people were escorted away, but I never knew if they were tucked
in somewhere else or if they were turned away. All the riders I've talked with
believe Taylor never turns away a cyclist, so maybe they were given another
spot.

With your advice, I'll definitely try China Camp.
Still, if any other Friday arrivers are feeling sociable, let's talk about
meeting up.

It's the Shoprat Wishlist.
The salesman pressures the customer into what he himself wishes he could

The thing about a bunch of people gathering is that, sure, there may be one
or two nice spots on a log or rock. But once 2 or 3 people have the
comfortable, naturally occuring, spots in use if you want to join them you
either stand until you get tired of standing there, or sit somewhere
uncomfortable. A hammock seems to be just as troublesome for 5 or 10 people
to all find a comfortable nearby spot.

Thanks Andrew! That's really helpful to know.

For the last few years I've been conflicted between that nagging
Riv-fueled suspicion that any fenders without the SKS safety tab were less
than optimally safe, yet every SKS fender I've had I've disliked enough to
remove every time I thought there wouldn't be rain for awhile. The metal VO
fenders I have on two bikes have become permanent parts on them - and I
look forward to adding these clips to the VO fenders for peace of mind.

I've bike camped at Taylor several times and have always been told by other

Re: [RBW] Re: Refined S240 setup!

2014-08-03 Thread Roger
I've bike camped at Taylor several times and have always been told by other
cyclists that no cyclist is turned away.
One time, the biker paddock was filled when another group of cyclists
showed up. The rangers led them away, but I don't really know if it was to
another site or out of the park. I've always chosen to think positive, and
that they were tucked in somewhere.

[RBW] Do you ride your drop bars above, at, or below saddle height on your Rivbikes?

2014-08-07 Thread Roger
I like to discover my dropbar height by shifting it over time until I find I'm
using the drops about 1/3 of the time when just riding along.

Turns out that puts the tops a few cams above the saddle.

One trade off to the joy of being able to visit RWHQ often is that I never
get packages with box art.
My Hillborne was handed to me seconds after having its head badge affixed,
with best wishes by Mark, which felt quite good, though.

Oh man, I just saw this thread. Terrible.

I think Manny's Bleriot, in the many ride and camping threads in which
it starred, gave me more vicarious enjoyment than any other bike. Like
all of us, I'll miss it.

I once recovered a stolen bike by seeing it parked in front of a store

[RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?

2012-01-04 Thread Roger
I saw a 2008 Trek Catalog that shows geometries on the next to last
page. The 62cm Hunqa (largest size) is indeed a larger bike than a 25"
Trek, but the 64cm Bombadil is more similar in size to your 67cm Homer
and especially closer to the 69cm Homer you considered.
http://www.trekbikes.com/pdf/2008/catalog/road/road_en.pdf

By the way, beautiful color on the Homer! What's that shade called? I
notice in your photos that you have racks front and back now on your
Homer. Have you ever tried it fully loaded? I'd be curious how well it
would compare to the 520.

[RBW] Re: Touring Load and Packing list with weights

2012-01-17 Thread Roger
I like a French Press, and figured a way to make a 16oz Contigo insulated
stainless mug and a French Press plunger do double duty for drinking and
coffee making. The Contigo fits water-bottle cages and is easy to use while
riding.

I re-purposed a plunger from a plastic Peets travel French Press that fits
nicely into the Contigo, and is just the right length to hold the grounds
tight when I put the lid on the mug. I don't let it bother me that the
grounds are pressed to the bottom of the mug while I'm drinking, and
sometimes there is a ground or two that gets loose.

For the cost of a few grams of plunger, a uni-tasking coffee pot is avoided,
and I can store the plunger in the travel mug until needed again.

Pictures prove it's real:

[RBW] Re: Every Day Carry - Here's Mine, What's Yours?

2012-01-26 Thread Roger
I'm surprised by the similarities of my kit with Amit's:

In my old Candy Bar Bag:

Pump
Hanky/Tool Roll with:
- Spoke Wrench
- Multi tool
- Tire tools
- Leatherman Micra
- Patch kit with Presta/Schrader adaptors & 4mm, 5mm and 3/16" Allen
Wrenches
Coin Purse
Key Chain with locking hub key
Tissues with
- mini tube of sun-block
- lip balm
4.5x5.5 Notepad (homemade)
Wallet with:
- Kaweco fountain pen w/Noodler's Blue Heron ink
- Sodbuster Jr. pocket knife
iPhone
Spare Innertube (not shown)

Image at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/56856126@N02/6767278655/in/photostream

Each time I empty out the bag I try to remove unused items. These are
the ones that justify themselves over time. Maybe the Micra can go...

The wallet was from Etsy and meant to hold a phone, but I like it's
pocket for a pen and knife. I've found it's important to carry a
friendly looking knife so people assume you want to pare an apple or
open a box, not brandish a weapon. That Sodbuster is a great little
knife: it's one blade is sturdy, it fits my hand well, and it has even
become my favorite paring knife in the house. Kaweco pens are great
little pens as well.

You've found a universal and inexpensive way to improve almost any

[RBW] Re: 64 Atlantis still FS

2012-02-16 Thread Roger
I'm not in the market for an Atlantis right now, but I am curious
about yours.

IIRC, shortly after the Atlantis was released there was strong
lobbying by some people who wanted top tubes shortened on Rivendells.
Again from a foggy, decade old memory, it may have been Sheldon Brown
foremost among the short tubers. I looked up the earliest Wayback
Machine captures of rivbike, and indeed on 11/1/02 there was a 62cm
top tube spec for the Atlantis in the webalog section, but slightly
earlier in the main site info (8/27/02) it was listed as the later
standard of 60cm.

Have you ever measured your top tube?
(Apologies if this was already discussed)

[RBW] Re: My "Grilver" AHH

Riv is so on a roll with colors in the last couple of years. The
Roadeo/Hunqa grey with red or orange, the last two Hillborne's, Simpleone,
and now this accidental choice.
I find very often that when I relax my grip a bit that serendipity will
trickle in. And that has made all the difference.

[RBW] Sackville Shop Sack & Wald basket

2013-05-23 Thread Roger
I've had both the large and medium Walds on a Mark's rack. The large rack was
too wobbly for my taste, but the combo of a medium basket with the Riv sack is
insanely great for commuting and errands.

I just built a wheel using a "No BS" rim I ordered from Velocity USA's
webstore. The invoice read "No BS" but the sticker on the inner rim read
"Atlas 36h Mill-Finish " and didn't mention "No BS" anywhere. Methinks "No
BS":is a marketing term meant to appeal to the bike polo market. I'm glad
to have an Atlas, instead.

Re: [RBW] Yet _even more_ travel coffee questions!

2014-11-24 Thread Roger
I can definitely taste how paper strips the oils and bass notes out of the
types of coffee I roast (Jjavas, Yemens, East africans, etc). Lighter bodied,
brighter coffees may be less affected.

As for plastic, it's not rational it just gives me the heeby jeebies. Not sure
if I taste it. It does remind me of improvised roasting with popcorn poppers
where the plastic lid would soften, deform and ultimately form plastic
stalactites over the roasting bans.

Re: [RBW] For sale 62cm Waterford Built Hunqapillar (revised posting)

Oh man, I test rode and wanted THAT bike. Even though it was a transitional
version of the Hunqapillar of which surely very few were built, it seared
itself into my brain as the perfection of that type of bike.
I believe it eventually sold to a customer and no doubt is making that
person very happy.

The reach on the Hunq is actually closer than my other bikes (Waterford

The reach is longer on my 63.5cm Steve Rex, 63.5cm Map Randonneur Project

My other Riv'endells all have higher SO heights with longer reaches
due to their specific setups. My 64cm Roadeo (yes 64cm - its a one off
model I rode on PBP in 2011) has a 60cm top tube, while my 63cm Protovelo
has a 60.5 cm top tube, and my 65cm Hilsen has a 62cm top tube. The
variance in these top tube lengths is somewhat meaningless since the head
tube angles are different on all of the bikes mentioned. My Roadeo has a
73 degree Head tube angle (same as my, Map, Rex, and Waterford which all
have similar TT lengths. My Gunnar has the shortest wheelbase and steepest
HT angle at 73.5 degrees. It has a 60cm TT length but longer reach due to
the saddle to bar position setup for the Oakland Port Ride.

when you were considering an Atlantis or Hunq?
They're all really nice people on the phone at Rivendell.

I weight 250# and have put camping loads onto my 62cm Sam and liked the way
it rode very well. With the 38-42 size tires the Sam was optimized for
(such as 700x45 Smart Sam
<http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/tsmart-10135.htm> or 700x38 Conti
Speedrides <http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/t108.htm>) the load has
carried well for me on hardpack off road surfaces, like I imagine your
local fire trails would mostly be.

[RBW] Re: Klean Kanteen Conversion Questons

2015-02-28 Thread Roger
Klean Kanteens are very versatile and durable. My wife and I use them
daily, in several ways:

   - drinking water around the house in uninsulated bottles
   - keeping coffee hot for hours, poured fresh out of the French Press
   - holding tea for sipping slowly over an hour's time

In addition, I use the pair of an insulated and uninsulated for making
coffee while on a ride or camping. I made a caldera-style stove for using
the uninsulated as a kettle, and make the coffee, Russ Roca style, in the
insulated bottle.

There are a few pictures showing the setup and how everything (except the
Trangia stove "puck") stores away in the two bottle cages here
.

[RBW] Camera Bag companion for ShopSack / Wald Basket

2015-03-01 Thread Roger
Recently, I've been working on my camera skills in conjunction with
investing in new camera gear (Olympus EM10 with several native and adaped
lenses), and have been looking for a good way to carry an outing's worth of
equipment along in a secure fashion.

Camera bags are great, but bag inserts are a nice way to go if you already
have a main bag you like and just want a camera bag to fit inside.

The Timbuk2 Snoop Insert

is a nice way to go, if you already have a messenger bag. You can buy the
same size insert as your bag to completely fill the main compartment, or
you can get the insert that is one size down to still have some room left
for other things.I have a Small insert in a Medium bag, and it holds most
all of my gear.

The Shopsack / Wald basket combo is perhaps the most perfect bike
accessory. It is the best commute and errand running setup I've used, and
what I really wanted was an insert to work with the ShopSack.

A Camaroo insert is a nice, smaller bag insert. I have the Express Insert
for

Micro Four Third / Mirrorless Camera, which snuggles nicely into a Medium
Shopsack. I like it for on the bike. I can access my gear while straddling
the bike and keeping anything from moving around on me. It's also really
good for when you pull the Shopsack off the bike and carry it ... wherever
you are headed. My bag is about 8.5 x 6 x 4 and holds the camera, up to 4
lenses, and various things. It takes up less than half of the zippable
capacity of the Medium Shopsack, leaving space for your tools, personables
and sweater.

I've been trying to picture one thing: do the number of teeth of the
chainring plus the cog need to add up to an even number so that the pattern
of thick/thin teeth meeting the thick/thin chain doesn't reverse to
thick/thin meeting the thin/thick every other time around?

I added a note that Appaloosa was first available in March of 2016.

I think Appaloosa was, like the various iterations of the name Roscoe
Bubbe/Boscoe Rubbe, a name that was floating around for awhile waiting to
be paired with a bike concept that was going to move forward into
production. The original use of the name in print predated its use as what
we now know as Appaloosa by several years.
