[RBW] Wet paint options in the Upper Midwest

2024-08-16 Thread Kevin
Hi all,

I'm located in the Twin Cities and considering a repaint of a well-worn
Redwood. I've found a couple of places to look at but I'm wondering if
anybody here has hands on experience getting a wet paint job in and around
Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Thanks!

[RBW] Brake levers that clear Silver 2 thumbies

2024-09-14 Thread Kevin
Hi all,

I'm currently using the upside down Shimano method but I'm about to move
those levers to another bike. Who can help me find some silvery long pull
levers with a clamp that doesn't interfere with the shifters?

I know the Pauls do but I'd love a cheaper option if it's out there.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: 43mm-46mm 650b Tire Options.

2024-09-16 Thread Kevin
Challenge makes the Strada Bianca and the Gravel Grinder in a labeled 46mm.
Unsure how they actually measure, though I'm hoping to give the Strada
Biancas a go soon.

I think Pirelli has a couple gravel-focused options in this range as well.

Fantastic on the rough stuff, and good on pavement. The owners are great
people, too, providing excellent customer support.
I am a big fan of Panaracer tires, having ridden various iterations for
years. My current favorite for city riding is the Pasella Protite. Very
comfy tires, with better puncture resistance than the original. They offer
great grip on pavement - and they do surprisingly well on dirt. However, I
wish they came in a 700cx40 or 42. The fattest is a 38mm.

Re: [RBW] Introduction and Tire Question

2021-04-17 Thread Kevin
Alex Adventurer 2 comes in a tubeless, rim brake 26. A bit narrower and
certainly not as nice as a Cliffhanger but wallet friendly and pretty
durable in my experience with the 700c version.

This bike is most certainly not a Junior, she is a classy lady!

Early last year, I moved to Colorado. I had no idea what a goat head

out the tires on all my bikes to Schwalbe Marathons to battle the buggers.
I'm still getting some flats though. Is going tubeless worth the mess and
expense? I can't use these Marathons, they are the standard wire bead
version. And has anybody tried using the stock Clem wheels set up
tubelessly? I would already need new tires, a

[RBW] Shortish reach drops with long returns

2021-04-22 Thread Kevin

I like the hoods position that wider, shorter reach drop bars, paired with
modern longer reach brake levers provides. However, several of the these
I've tried (Noodle 48, RM-013 (I do tend to prefer a silver 26.0 clamp))
seem to have correspondingly short returns, such that I can barely get a
full hand comfortably on the flatter portion of the drops.

Lengths of the returns is not typically a measurement noted anywhere in
description/specs, so I am seeking out some real world experiences. Anybody
have similar experiences and are there bars that have worked well for you?

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Shortish reach drops with long returns

2021-04-22 Thread Kevin
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check some of those out.

Have tried the Woodchippers and I think the drops position is awesome but I
don't love the wrist angle on the hoods.

Would love to try the 26.0 Shakas but they seem pretty difficult to come by
unless somebody here is sitting on a pair.

[RBW] Re: Help choosing brake levers for drop bars

2021-04-30 Thread Kevin
I did not love the hood shape of the TRPs--that can be pretty
personal--though I would second or third the thoughts on the quality. The
quick release is really nice and the lever feel is good and springy. The
hoods also have a softer feel than some. They may pair better with the
Noodle (shortish reach bar) than the Gran Compes due to being roomier and
longer reach.

I have settled on the extremely ugly Sram S500.

[RBW] WTB/WTT road frame for a tall person

2021-05-20 Thread Kevin
Hi all,

I'm looking for a road frameset (or possibly complete bike) in the 62-68 cm
range. I have particular interest in Rambouillets or Redwoods but other,
similar bikes of any era with a Rivish sensibility on tire clearance and
bar positioning would also be welcome.

Some background, I ride a ~2018 Sam mostly now, and while it's a great
all-rounder or 'if you could only have one' type of bike, I just don't need
the extra versatility it provides most of the time and, on the occasions I
do, I end up wishing it had bigger tires. So, rather than throwing cash
into a weight loss program and likely futile and expensive attempt to make
it something it's not, I've decided just to look for something else.

If you are interested in trading for said Sam (62, 2TT, canti, sage) I'm
willing to explore that avenue. Otherwise happy just to purchase.

Thanks!

Thanks for the responses! think I'm looking for the niche in between the

The old style Homer is interesting--I'll likely pm. I'll have to take a

[RBW] Re: How Many Bars on the Appaloosa?

2022-08-07 Thread Kevin
I've gone through enough cockpits (8?) to wonder if I should just move on
from the bike. Would be interested to see/hear if people have had success
with drop bars on the newer Appaloosas. I've got mine to where the
measurements suggest they should be comfortable and still it feels a little
long.

Yeah, I started with Soma Oxfords and Jones and I think one of the Crust
sweeper options before deciding I couldn't handle more than 45 minutes or
so in that position. Since then it's just been gradually shortening my stem
and switching to marginally shorter reach drop bars. Have landed on the
Salsa Cowbell with a 50mm stem.

[RBW] Long pull levers that clear thumb shifter mounts

2022-08-21 Thread Kevin
Hi, I'm looking for some suggestions out of experience of long pull
mountain levers that don't interfere with mounting the Silver 2 thumbies
inside the bars.

Riv shows this a bit on this product page
 if anyone has some
confusion as to the problem I am trying to solve. Basically the pinch bolt
on the lever extends far enough to restrict shifter movement. None of the
long pull levers I have lying around work and the suggested Pauls are a bit
outside of my budget.

Thanks!

[RBW] FS/FT Saddlesack Large + Kangaroo Pouch

2022-09-09 Thread Kevin
Hi all,

After toying with the idea of making some modifications, I'm just going to
move on.

It's in good shape, maybe a bit of puckering on the leather at the bottom
and a smallish stain on the top flap (shown in a photo but it's kind of
hard to distinguish from a shadow) are the only issues I see.

I will note that unlike the current bags, there is not a connection point
for the seatpost, which is one of the complaints I've had with it.

Asking $160 (PP F/F) plus shipping or trade +/- some cash for a good size
saddlebag that does have a seatpost connection (Happisack, Baggabond, one
of the many nice Carradice-style bags out there)

Photos here

[RBW] Clem H sizing, availability

2021-04-01 Thread Kevin
Hi folks,

I am semi in the market for a Clem H and am looking for some first person
thoughts on fit. I worry I am in between the 59 and the massive 65. Can
anybody who has ridden either or both of those chime in with their
measurements and how the bikes felt? I think the proper solution to this
problem is to just get the 64 L but I am just not sympatico with the
aesthetics there.

I'm about a 95-96 PBH and ride a 62 Sam pretty comfortably with drops,
would prefer more reach every time I've set it up with flats.

Also, the bike seems to have been excised from the models section of Riv's
site. Anyone know if they are planning on only offering the step through
model moving forward?

Thanks!

[RBW] WTB short extension, tall stack 31.8 quill stem

2021-09-03 Thread Kevin
Hi all,

I know these are hard to find these days but I'm looking for. 60-70mm, 31.8
quill stem with a good amount of stack. The Nitto ones sold by Riv would be
great. Something like the Crust UI would as well.

I'm using the 80mm VO one now and it's workable, but just a touch longer
than ideal. I know Analog sells one, but $200 stem for a marginal fit
upgrade is a hard pill to swallow.

I have cranks, bars, tires, other stems to trade if that interests you more
than US dollars.

Thanks.

[RBW] FS 2021 60cm Appaloosa frameset

2021-09-26 Thread Kevin
Hi all,

I've got a very lightly used <500 mi Appaloosa frame (sold with headset,
bb, seatpost)
in mermaid green. I've tried a number of configurations but can't find one
that's comfortable enough to justify keeping it. I got the frame from Riv
in June or maybe early July this year.

It's in really good shape--only scuff to speak of is on the bottom of the
derailleur hanger (it's still aligned fine). I'll have pics in a bit and am
happy to answer any questions about fit etc.

I've not shipped a bike, so I'd prefer a local twin cities area sale, if
possible. If you're willing to set up packing and shipping with a local
shop, I'm happy to go that route and will throw in a pair of 2.1
Thunderburts for your trouble. If it hangs around a bit, I will look into
packing it myself.

Looking for $1,350 via PayPal plus any shipping costs.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Dallas/Fort Worth Rivendell bike owners: I want to see some Rivendell bikes.

2014-02-16 Thread Kevin
Jim: what a gorgeous custom! Love the colors.

Will: as others have said, Rivs do look better in person than any pictures.
Maybe it has to do with the way they feel when you touch them. For those
wondering my wife does get annoyed and maybe a bit disgusted when she catches
me caressing Sam's top-tubes (so to speak) ;P

The folks at Rivbikes will do an awesome job sizing you up over the phone.
When my bike arrived I was very happy with the overall fit. Having just done a
professional fitting for another bike, I questioned a few of the components
Jared recommended for me. For example, on the non-riv bike I settled on 42 cm
handlebars so when Jared said a 48 noodle was ideal for me I was a bit
skeptical. He talked me out of getting anything smaller and assured me it was
an apple-oranges comparison. Couldn't be happier. It did take a few hundred
miles to nail down seat height, stem length, and bar angle so be ready for
that.

Once you've figured out the type of riding you'll be doing on it (and frame) I
say go for it. If you're decided on a steel lugged bike then you can't go
wrong with a riv.

[RBW] Fenders and chain stay clearance

2014-01-02 Thread Kevin
Thanks guys. I was sort of against cutting too. I do like the heat gun
approach - I'll need to see if there's enough room between the tire.

I guess just the fact that the fender sides contact the stays doesn't mean it's
wrong (or does it?).

I think the snuggness probably decreases fender vibrations on the whole.

[RBW] Re: Fenders and chain stay clearance

2014-01-05 Thread Kevin
It's a 58 and P45 fenders.

As mentioned above, I put pieces of urethane at the contact points. With the
paint protected, I feel the squeeze may reduce any rattling. Happy enough with
the result.

PS: In the process, I realized I probably could have added a few more washers
(or cork) moving the fender closer to the dimples and still have room for the
tire. Meh.

[RBW] Considering my first Riv purchase and looking for helpful advice

2014-09-23 Thread Kevin
Another thing to consider from my end:

Last year I was looking for a new bike (to replace my 80s Bridgestone). I
debated between the Sam and a Soma. I ended up getting the Soma - price was
the deciding factor. The Soma was a good bike, a great one really. It did
everything I wanted it to. But.

But, I still felt like in wa missing out. I remember on at large gathering
someone had a Sam. Even though my bike was just a couple of months old, I
wanted the Sam. A few months later my Soma was wrecked in a car crash and I
decided to use the insurance money on a Sam. Love it, haven't looked back.

So what I learned: (if you can afford it) don't let the cost be the deciding
factor, get what you really want!

Re: [RBW] Vittoria 1976 Men's Cycling Shoe

2013-01-05 Thread Kevin
Just bought a pair from Elliot Bay Cycles in Seattle. I wear a 46 or a 47
in the Sidi 5's - I ordered a 46.5 in the Vittoria's - i wear an 11 running
shoe. The Vittoria's fit like a glove out of the box. The walking sole
for the recessed cleat is very nice. Like the other fellow who responded -
I will match then with SP Frogs. Nice finish on the shoes - very nice and
comfy heal cup - this is often a problem for me in that I have skinny heals
and a wide forefoot - the heals are comfy and snug.

Re: [RBW] Re: Kid's First Pedal Bike (Riv parent edition)

2023-11-16 Thread Kevin M
I recently bought a Woom 2 for our son for his 3rd birthday in September.
Our kid is tall for his age (98th percentile), but he still couldn't fit
comfortably on our spare 16" Cleary Hedgehog. Didn't stop him from trying
tho! My impression is that the Woom is a little more upright, better
specced, and of course much lighter than the Cleary. I don't think our
Cleary uses a standard stem, so watch out for that if you're in the used
market. They must have changed the spec at some point.

I think we paid $250 for the Woom 2 used, and I'm sure we'll be able to
sell it for around the same price so I'm not stressed about him outgrowing
it by the Spring. Having him start on a smaller bike was super helpful, as
he treated it like a balance bike for the first couple weeks until he
caught on. Our kid is is pretty daring, so he's been riding his Woom 2 on
mtb trails, paved pump tracks and even rolling over the beginner green jump
lines, much to my worriment. I bought him a full set of Fox PeeWee
knee/elbow pads, and they've come in handy many times.

Re: [RBW] Re: Touring tire & Happy new year

2024-01-06 Thread Kevin Lu
Mathias is right on. Since I like some off-road capability, I ride Schwalbe
Marathon Mondial, which do well with road as well as dirt and are readily
available in 26 and 700c.

One tire that is also a gem is the Specialized Pathfinder Pro. Rolls super
fast on pavement with a smooth mid line, but also has grip from side knobs
for gravel. I read a lot of good things about its durability before I got
them, and they have lived up to it so far, in my experience. Hundreds of
miles so far in goat head filled Tucson, AZ and no flats so far. Plus it's
got a pretty tan wall option (which I wish Schwalbe Marathon's had).

Re: [RBW] Homer question

2024-04-30 Thread Kevin Lindsey
Greetings.
My PBH is about 87 and I ride a 59 Waterford-built Homer. I was a little
skeptical when the folks at Rivendell suggested that size, given that my
other bikes are all in the 54-55 cm range, but it worked out very well. If
memory serves, I had to swap out the stem for something a bit shorter than
usual - I think it has a 70 or 80 mm stem now - but the bike fits me
perfectly.

are awesome. For those who balk at the Bedrock price tag and need the extra
width and arch support they are a great option. Unfortunately, they are no

[RBW] Re: Why I went Tubeless

2020-04-16 Thread Kevin M
Good stuff there, both in the OP and the different guides from Analog.

I can echo a couple things:

   - The yellow tape by Sun and other brands is really bad (and expensive)!
Unfortunately it seems to be really common at brick and motor bike shops in
my area. I like the tape made by Whisky, but have also used Gorilla tape in
a pinch on fat bike rims with consistent success.
   - Orange Seal Endurance - thumbs up!
   - I like using soapy water, but in a mini spray bottle. It's a handy
thing to keep on your work bench for a number of reasons (besides cleaning
your bike). You can spray it on the beads to help seat the tire and for
trouble shooting leaky spots once the tire is mounted. Occasionally you run
into mysteries where a tire isn't holding pressure over time, but you don't
know if it's due to sidewall seepage, faulty valve, snake bite, or a tiny
puncture somewhere. Spray soapy water over the wheel and it will quickly
bubble up where the air is escaping. I try to use it sparingly while
seating the bead so it doesn't dilute the sealant. It doesn't take much.

[RBW] Re: St. Joe's, MI to Chicago route

2020-04-20 Thread Kevin M
There's a rail trail detour that'll add a few miles around Gary if you
don't want to go that way, but it's fine. I've ridden through Gary a few
times and it's really nothing to worry about. Just take the most direct
route through there and you'll be fine.

Lakeshore and Red Arrow Hwy are probably your best options and it should be
quiet for auto traffic for the time being! Be aware that the lake front
path and the bike path by Wolf Lake in Chicago are currently closed to
bikes.

Since it may be quite a while before this bike happens, I may just save my

Re: [RBW] New Craigslist/others thread

2022-02-25 Thread Kevin Reinking
As rear cassettes get more cogs and chains get narrower, front Derailleur
cages also get narrower, this causes rubbing problems to be exacerbated,
especially when the chain gets to the small-small or big-big combinations.
Fat tires make the problem worse.
I would say in this instance the medium size front ring and Huge back cog
might have infringed on the owners enjoyment of the bike? Simply dropping
the front ring to 36t(?) and mounting a smaller cassette would have dropped
at least a pound and livelied up that bike considerably!

Re: [RBW] Re: Club Rides On A Racing Platypus

2022-04-06 Thread Kevin Reinking
Well, their Slow group was probably pretty fast for you on the "upright"
Platypus!!
My first thought is you'll quickly be tempted down the stretchy clothes
path if you continue to "hang" with them. Nothing wrong with that really,
but it is a different mentality.
More Workout and Goals oriented; I gave up on that once I stopped racing.
In fact that's what drove me back to Cruisers, Klunkers, Clementine's, etc.
. . .
Swinging a leg over a bike that's gonna seriously handicap you from keeping
up, really discourages you from doing so.
With my current limitations, I'm just happy to go my pace, for as long as I
feel like going; making sure to enjoy myself.
When I stopped working I thought it would be sweet to be able to ride
whenever I want, but I quickly found I still can't ride whenever I want and
riding to work gave me an excuse to ride more!
If there's no place you GOTTA be, there's no sense in riding in the rain or
when it's 90+ degrees outside!!
Just remember to Have Fun!!

2022-06-21 Thread Kevin Reinking
I'm guessing you were joking, but those painted rims would probably be a
poor choice for a rim brake bike; intended for disc. really

I've often wondered about the possibility of a 32 hole rim with 36 hole
hub; figured it could be done, but I've always been able to adapt or come
up with an alternative to that. I am guessing that it probably depends a
lot on the type or rim used, likely one with minimal offset at the spoke
holes.

[RBW] Re: Today's brevet.

2011-03-15 Thread Kevin Brightbill
Mike! I don't think I met you on Saturday -- I remember seeing a
rather beautiful A.H.H. at the start, though! I was on the white Colin
Laing track bike... the one Birkie rider dumb enough to try it with a
fixed gear! Hope to catch you for the Three Capes... though unless we
get an unexpected forecast of 65 degrees and clear skies, I'll
probably pull out my Trek 520 instead!

Lynne, glad to see you on here -- it was a pleasure to meet up with
you and Susan (and my friend Nick) near the end of the ride.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Yesterday's 300k

2011-03-28 Thread Kevin Brightbill
Nice recap, Mike!

This ride was my second-ever brevet -- first being the Birkie earlier
this month.

Unfortunately, the 6:00 start time meant I left Forest Grove about
thirty minutes behind almost everyone else, as the first MAX of the
day could only bring me into Hillsboro by 6:03.

I did find some company about halfway between Timber and Tillamook,
then after a quick stop at the Tillamook shell, was able to regain
some ground at Meares.

I have family (a grandmother) who lives in Oceanside, so I'm fairly
familiar with riding and driving that area -- as the riders with me
were complaining about the Cape Meares roads, I was thinking of how
much the pavement had IMPROVED over the last several years!

The miles between the Capes and Pacific City went by mostly alone, but
I was able to run into a SIR rider several miles outside of Grand
Ronde, and we rode as a duo for the final 80ish miles. His name was
Bill, riding on one of those awesome Moulton rigid frames. We took a
mostly leisurely pace with several rest stops, although that tailwind
by Willamina did give us a temporary speed boost.

Our finish time was 16:42 (or I could call mine an unofficial 16:12).
The time was slow, but my only goal for the day was to finish in time
to catch an eastbound MAX, and that was no problem.

I was on my Trek 520 for the day, with a rather stuffed rack-top
trunk. From all the beautiful riding, the only pic I took was from the
train, at around midnight. Voila-- http://i.imgur.com/icIfe.jpg

I overpacked as usual, and the bike is definitely a true tourer, not a
lively randonneur rig. Still, plenty of fun.

Hope to catch you at another ride soon... I'll probably be out for the
night 200K!

[RBW] WTT: Soma/Sycip Wonder Bar for Albatross or North Road

2011-03-31 Thread Kevin M
As the title states, I'd like to trade my brand new Sycip wonder bar (as
seen
here)

for a Nitto Albatross, North Road, or similar bar in any condition.
I really like the width and shape of the Wonder Bar, the grip angle is
perfect, but it's shortened my reach a little too much. I've been riding the
Wonder bar since monday so it is slightly used, but in like-new condition.

[RBW] Re: Thumbies vs BEs

2011-06-23 Thread Kevin M
I use DA bar end friction shifters on our tandem without hardly any
problems. Make sure that you have the bars high enough to be comfortable for
long periods in the drops. How many teeth on your chainrings? We use (8sp)
53-42-30 x 11-32 and spend most of our time in the 42t. When preparing for
hills i do a double shift to get in the correct front chainring while
maintaining our cadence. We also try to crush it on the downhills to carry
our momentum up the next hill; this takes off the pressure and gives me some
time to get in the correct climbing gear. Also, try a rapid rise rear mech.
I haven't trying brifters on our tandem, but if i did, I'd use campy ergo
10sp to shimano 8sp

Shimano Deore LX Cantilever brakes with Salmon pads. Pads are new.

Cinelli Champion 42 handle bars. I haven't taken the time to clean
them up.
But they are in perfect shape. A few light scratches here and there.

from rubbing in my move cross country. But that can easily be
replaced.

I have a pair of Nitto mountain curved bars made for Jamis. These are
really rare

[RBW] Re: Yet more travel coffee questions!

2014-02-20 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
I'm not sure if you're asking how to keep milk cold in hotels or while bike
touring? But you can use the evaporation method, like you've seen on old
flannel wrapped canteens. After you soak the exterior, the evaporation of
the liquid pulls the heat from the can, keeping the interior cool.

Otherwise, I've been useing the Mypressi - portable espresso maker with a
Haro mini mill. The Mypressi uses NO2 canisters, and after a little
practice, produces a wonderful shot, easily superior to most coffeeshops.
It produces a shot with such generous creama, maybe you wont need to add
frothed milk :)

I switched to an SA Titanico a couple months ago and love how comfortable

[RBW] Re: painted braze on

2016-04-29 Thread Kevin Lindsey
In theory, yes. In practice, you risk breaking a low-quality bolt if too
much of the thread is painted over and the torque necessary to overcome the
friction is more than the fastener can bear. Happened to me when I was
trying to install a Nitto rack on my Hunqapillar; things were going well
until the bolt snapped in two about 3/4 of an inch inside the braze-on. It
took the LBS only about five minutes to extract the bolt and finish reaming
the painted-over braze-on, but it was a pain in the neck, regardless. And
I was surprised to find that Nitto provided relatively low-quality
fasteners, considering that its racks are generally first rate.

[RBW] Trimming a Fender

2016-05-10 Thread Kevin Lindsey
I have my Hunq pretty nearly dialed in running perfectly. The only sore
spot - and it's not much of one - is that the front SKS Longboard fender
rattles. I've tried tightening it up, inserting a leather washer in the
hopes that it might dampen the vibrations, etc., and nothing really helps.
The problem seems to be that the distance from the fork attachment point to
the front tip of the fender is simply too long; any small vibration in the
fork (and there are lots of 'em) produces much greater vibrations at the
end of the fender, causing the front to rattle constantly. Has anyone
tried trimming an SKS? I'm thinking of lopping off about four inches up
front, but I'm also afraid that loss of that much fender would leave me
open to front tire spray.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Kevin

[RBW] Re: Trimming a Fender

2016-05-11 Thread Kevin Lindsey
Thanks for the excellent feedback. After reading the posts, I took another
look at the fender set-up, and still can't really see what it's rattling
against. As far as I can tell, it clears the tire and front rack by good
margins. I tightened up all associated bolts and screws and will see if
that makes a difference. Next step, assuming I still have this problem,
would be to try a variation on the idea of an extra stay, and find a way to
attach the front end to my front rack and see whether that helps.
To clarify the issue a bit: the fender is fine under most conditions. It's
only when I ride over rough stretches that it makes its noise.
All the best,
Kevin

[RBW] Re: Share Hunq Build / pics and ideas?

2016-06-10 Thread Kevin Lindsey
I'm currently running drop bars on my Hunq and find they work very well. I
originally set the bike up with Mustache bars and a Dirt Drop stem; they
worked wonderfully and were extremely comfortable, but they were ugly and
slow in a high wind (due to the very upright riding posture). Chiefly for
aesthetic reasons, I therefore decided to go for drop bars (Nitto Noodles);
I think a Hunq is much prettier in that configuration, it's easier to move
in and out of crowded bike racks, and it seems to run a bit faster
(although I'm willing to concede that any perceived increase in speed might
be my imagination; even if not, the idea of using the words "Hunq" and
"faster" in the same sentence seems somehow ungrammatical). It feels as
comfortable as it did with the Mustache bars and, on the whole, I'll
probably stick to the drops.

[RBW] Re: Extent of thread chasing necessary on new Riv frame

2016-07-01 Thread Kevin Lindsey
Bob -
The only threads I had to have redone on my Hunq were the fender mounts.
The first was problematic (in fact, I snapped a Nitto screw off inside,
thinking that I could use it to muscle through the paint instead of tapping
it as I should have), so I had the local bike shop (Bicycle Pro Shop in
Alexandria (Keith, take note)) do all remaining mounts, just in case.
