[RBW] Re: Minimalist Riding Shoes

2013-09-16 Thread Evan Baird
I've been trying to get a casual cycling shoe made by these folks out in
Mariposa. They make really nice moccasins for hunting and renaissance
faires. I have a pair of the 2 button boots.

http://www.nativearth.net/

I sent a sample pair to Grant Petersen who said they were comfy "but they
look like pot farmer shoes".

Maybe if more people express an interest they'll get serious about making a
shoe that looks like it comes from this millenia.

[RBW] Re: Non-Nitto Front Rack Recommendations

2013-09-30 Thread Evan Baird
I've been working on a new mini rack for Soma called the Champs Elysee.
They aren't due in for a couple months, but if you're still in the market
when they show up you should take a look.

It mounts to the standard Nitto/Riv braze ones, but it'll also include
p-clamps. The tongue is adjustable so you can make sure the platform is
level.

Re: [RBW] Re: Soma Grand Randonnee, from a Rivendell perspective

2013-11-12 Thread Evan Baird
The seat post clamp is further from the cluster because there's less chance
of heat distortion at the clamping point. We've seen issues in the past
with integrated binders that didn't clamp down properly as a result of
this. If you have adequate standover it shouldn't have an affect your
saddle position. If you're running a handlebar bag on the bars you'll
probably want a longer TT with a shorter stem to get everything lined up
right. If you use an adjustable decaleur like the Berthoud then it doesn't
really matter. It seems that most of the builds I've seen so far have been
on the smaller, lower hood position end of the spectrum. A Rivvier rider
would probably use a larger frame with less ST showing and the bars closer
to the saddle height. To accommodate a wider range of riders a sloping top
tube makes a big difference. Since this is undeniably a niche within a
niche it makes sense to build the bike so that it works for a greater range
of riders. If horizontal TT and minimal seat post are deal breakers for you
then you might want to look at a more custom option. Just sayin. I'm sure
Mike can accommodate.

I have run both steel and plastic fenders offroad, and have yet to get into
any serious trouble. You definitely need to be cognizant of how much
clearance you have to avoid picking up debris. I probably wouldn't run
knobbies with fenders. Too much danger of them pulling up a rock or
something and getting lodged. Right now I'm using the Soma Rain Dogs, with
the expectation that if somthing does get stuck they'll probably break
apart rather than damage my frame/fork.

When I first saw the geometry for these I figured that was Riv's plan all
along. It makes perfect sense. The ebike commuter market in California is
set to grow far in excess of the rest of the bike industry combined, and
there bikes are loads more appealing to the target demographics (aka non
spandorks).

[RBW] Re: Getting the message out.

2016-06-01 Thread Evan Baird
Regardless of whether Bobbishness is a movement already, it needs to become
one if we want to grow the cycling community. The bicycle advocacy world is
primarily funded by lycra wearing, charity rider types (primarily white
dudes if we're going by the numbers). This is a huge problem, especially
since the vast majority of potential transportation cyclists are low income
people of color, many of which primarily speak languages other than English
and don't participate in the "bike community'. That means that the policies
that affect transportation cyclists are frequently being decided by people
who don't really understand the needs of road users that don't fit their
idea of "cyclists". I'm not suggesting a bike industry conspiracy, but
rather a confirmation bias that makes bicycles less accessible. Part of
making cycling accessible is embracing riders who don't fall into the
typical bike shop genres, and very probably won't ever step foot into one
due to the condescending, profit driven mentality of the bike industry. As
long as bike shops are the primary point of contact for new cyclists, we
need to forcefully shift the narrative towards a culture that embraces
cargo bikes, and ebikes and adaptive bikes and upright bikes. It's not
academic. If we want safe roads, and bicycle facilities there needs to be
real money to back up our demands. The auto and oil industries spend
upwards of 50 million dollars a year to push pro driving policies.

Re: [RBW] Re: Getting the message out.

2016-06-02 Thread Evan Baird
Peter, that's already happening. The problem is that the traditional LBS model
is failing, and moat comminities don't have access to coop workspaces. As a
"veteran" shop rat, I have a dewp affection for the LBS and the culture
surrounding it, but I've also seen first hand how the chevanism, zenophobia and
elitism that people encounter in many shops can turn them away from the
"sport". Those of us who are deciples of Sheldon will get along regardless, but
the average dealer isn't going to be able to compete with ecommerce. If the
industry insists of pushing products that are increasingly not user servicable
we're going to see a lot more Circut Cities and Comp USAs in the bike world.
Shops need to be welcoming community spaces. There'sno room for mediocre
service in this economy.

This is exaclty what I'm talking about. I've always pushed Soma to keep their
web pricing comparable to brick and mortar, but as more and more people sign up
for Amazon Prime it's really a race to the bottom. Any publiclly held bike
company that doesnt offer direct sales is going to get an earful when Canyon
starts moving big numbers. And even if brand try to enforce MAP that doesnt
prevent startups like Casper and Harrys from spinning up buissnesses to compete
with in product catagory they think they have an edge in.

[RBW] Re: Getting the message out.

2016-06-06 Thread Evan Baird
Since we're talking about regional issues, I can give an example from the
bay area of how this stuff plays out. SF, as must people are aware, is no
longer affordable by any definition, so the majority of working class folks
live across the bay. The Golden Gate Bridge has a bike lane, so plenty of
people commute to work by bike in the morning. The Bay Bridge does not have
a bike lane, and probably won't get one for at least 10 years. That means
if you work in SF you either take bart (which is nearly impossible with a
bike unless you live out in the burbs) or ride a bus (which means crossing
your fingers and hoping there's space on the front rack) or ride a ferry
which costs twice as much. There is a special bike shuttle, but the point
is there are way more barriers to entry if you live in the historically low
income areas. The only reason this has improved at all is because we have
kick ass advocacy groups that fight for bicycle access, and the only reason
they are able to do that is because they raise a lot of money.

Now I don't mean to point any fingers, but when you compare the
infrastructure development in the wealthy parts of SF to the poorer
neighborhoods in the southeast SF, you can see who is getting the majority
of the infrastructure improvements. But if you never go to those areas,
because you live in a nice part of town so why would you, you'll never
realize that there are a lot of people who are at risk riding there. Those
neighborhoods have been neglected due to a lack of anybody with clout
speaking up about it, and that prevents people that live there from taking
up bicycle commuting. The office jockey who only rides his road bike on the
weekends is not going to throw a fit about unsafe rush hour traffic on
Monday morning, but statistically he is the person that the policy makers
will here from as he's more likely to write a big check. When people talk
about the bike lanes of gentrification this is exactly what they mean.

[RBW] Re: Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-14 Thread Evan Baird
I've been riding back to back rake comparisons for the last 2 years, and
the conclusion I've come to is you'll probably get used to whatever you
ride the most. IF you always carry stuff on your bike, and IF you prefer to
keep it within reach, and IF you need to take your hands off the bars often
then go for it. That said, I ride my Stag without a handlebar bag and it's
fine. I ride the high trail bike with a handlebar bag and pannier and it's
fine. I can ride them both no hands. It is a bit easier with the low trail,
but there are so many variables that you'd need a ven diagram to quantify
it all. The one thing that I feel pretty confident about is that I prefer
the slacker head tube for dirt, regardless of the trail. I can't justify
that with any data though.

Re: [RBW] Re: Soma San Marcos questions....

2016-06-22 Thread Evan Baird
I suspect it had somthing to do with the butt ugly forks they originally
came with. And not having front rack mounts. And not having decent tire
clearance. And not being low trail or planing. And generally being overly
"girly" looking.

Re: [RBW] Re: Soma San Marcos questions....

2016-06-22 Thread Evan Baird
Isn't Rivendell technically the Bikes Direct Grant Designs? I know they have
more dealers now, but it's been mail order since day 1. Don't get me wrong, the
San Marcos rides great imo, but the Bleriot was like 95% perfect and I for one
was really disappointed that they didn't just re-relase it and just add more
fork eyelets. My assumption is that it was intened to fill several gaps in the
Riv line without cannibalizing any of their other models, but what Riv customer
is going to want to be stuck running 33mm tires with barely any fender
clearance. For that matter, why would you use "lightweight" tubing just to slap
on a second top tube? If it's just for looks then fine, but using heavier
tubing and just having the one makes a lot more sense.

I don't really know if that's true anymore. The cost of labor in China
isn't much lower than Taiwan. In some cases (Colossi for instance) it's
actually quite a bit more because there is more competition for skilled
welders. It's more about materials and supply chain.

I've asked Grant what he though about a larger 650b Marcos. I love how the

geometry. I think it would still be pretty sporty. Seemed like he was open

[RBW] Re: School me on Panaracer gumwall casing design.

The story I was told is that modern black wall tires came about because
Specialized was trying to copy some Japanese tires and the factory they

covered the whole thing with black rubber and said this is the new thing,
and from them on they just made all their tires in black.

At that time only low end tires would have been black wall, not the kind of
"serious enthusiast" tires Panasonic, Mitsuboshi, Specialized and WTB were
making in Japan. High end clincher tires were meant to look like sew ups,
because that's what you saw on pro bikes. It stated with MTB tires and then
became trendy with road bikes as well.

[RBW] Tanaka fenders - any thoughts?

2014-05-13 Thread Evan Baird
The older Tanaka fenders were made in a different factory, and had some issues
with radius consistency. The newer ones seems more accurate, and come a bit
longer + pre drilled. We asked them to start using the honjo style 2 bolt
clamps instead of darumas, because they put way less stress on the holes so
there's less risk of cracking. The front fenders are really meant to attach to
a front rack, so it might be wise to use and extra u stay on the front if
you're not running one.

[RBW] Re: Tire noise, way OT

2014-05-15 Thread Evan Baird
I'm interested to know if there's an accurate way to quantify rolling
resistance as it relates to tread directionality. It's always been my
perception that horizontal ribs offer more traction but also create more
drag vs. lateral ribs. My assumption is that on most Japanese tires at
least the rubber is soft enough that the difference would be pretty
nominal, but there does seem to be more audible buzz with horizontal tread
patterns. I would imagine that's caused by the micro treads flattening
front to back as they come in contact with pavement, versus evenly on both
sides.

[RBW] Re: Soma's Tanaka Decaleurs???

2014-05-21 Thread Evan Baird
The only downside to these that I've found is you really want to strap it
down to keep the bag from bouncing if you ride it on super bumpy
trails/roads. If your bag has a loop for the tombstone that's less of an
issue, but mine doesn't so I put one of the included ostrich straps on when
I ride trails. I haven't had the linkage move on me at all. I wrote a post
about it on the Soma blog.

Oh, and according to Prolly they're too heavy. But that describes pretty
much everything on my bike so take that for what you will. I do my best to
break everything they give me, and so far these are still hanging in there.

Hoping to make a 66tpi version at some point and bring the price down.
Still, you don't get a 300g tire without some special sauce.
