2 x 6 actually, with a sheet of 1/4" plywood cut up for the bumper boards.
I used the larger size Park hooks for more lee way with the bulkier
rim/tire combinations, such as the Bombadil.

[RBW] WTB: Rivendell/Nitto bullmoose bar RAW

2021-06-30 Thread David Sprunger
Hi. As the subject line says, I'm looking for the Rivendell bullmoose bar
in the short-lived raw edition.

They were brazed and then clear-coated rather than plated. My plan is to
use this bar on my equally raw first-edition Bombadill.

It's a long-shot request, but this forum is the place to ask.

Thanks,
David Sprunger

Re: [RBW] Any former paper boys (or girls) on this list?

2021-09-06 Thread David Sprunger
I too came from a family of paper carriers. I threw the Newton Kansan, an
afternoon paper, using my coppertone Schwinn Typhoon. My brother had the
Wichita Eagle Beacon, which was a 5 am route. He had a red Typhoon. In
hindsight, my parents were quite tolerant of our operation. We could rarely
take family vacations, and even school activities outside of normal hours
posed a challenge.
I learned a lot about all-weather biking and the value of fenders from
those years as a paper carrier.

Re: [RBW] Re: Market Prices for Riv Frames

2011-06-16 Thread David Sprunger
This is an interesting thread.

One aspect not yet discussed concerns the economics of being an early
adapter.  For example, I bought a first-generation Atlantis when the
frame was about $900.  I rode it hard and was able to sell it later
for about what I paid, not so much because the frame had appreciated
but because a new frame had about doubled in price.  I went on to buy
a Bombadil when the pre-release price was $1400. The current price is
now $2500.  (This example is perhaps not as parallel because my 60 cm
frame has the double tube whereas the current models have the diagonal
tube).  As others have pointed out, interest in the Quickbeam remains
high, so one imagines that those who bought the SimpleOne at its
introductory price will find that those frames hold their value well.

[RBW] FS: shrunken XL MUSA chambray shirt, $25

2014-02-26 Thread David Sprunger
Here's a RBW non-bike item for sale.

I have one of the original RBW blue chambray shirts, size XL. Thanks to my
cavalier laundry habits, I seem to have overdried it so that it is now
shrunken to more like a loose size L.

The shirt is in nice shape with no stains, rips, damaged buttons, or other
signs of wear.

If you'd like to take a chance on this quality garment, which may or may
not fit you, I'd take $25, including US shipping.

See an unshrunk XL here to read all the details:
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/at3.htm

Thanks,
David Sprunger
Fargo, ND

p.s. Bonus RBW non-bike offer: I also have an Aerobie top as offered in the
RBW Christmas promotion a few years ago. Opened, maybe used, but with all
original packaging. $8 if you buy it with the shirt, so I can consolidate
shipping.

[RBW] Reading Readers in e-readers?

2011-01-09 Thread David Sprunger
Hi. Perhaps this inquiry is a bit off topic, but after reading the
messages about favorite articles from past Readers, I decided to wait
out the bitter cold in Fargo by rereading my collection on cd-rom.
Has anyone had luck converting the old issues into some format that's
compatible with epub readers, particularly the ipad? I can move the
pdf files into the library, but I wonder if there's some
straightforward way to convert the pdf files into an epub format. I
tried converting them in Calibre, but the results were mangled.
Thanks for any suggestions.

[RBW] finally cleaned and photographed my Rivendell

2010-09-19 Thread David Sprunger
Rivendellers,

For two years, I've promised to scrub the beausage off my bike and
take some updated pictures. I have finally done so, and the pictures
are here:
http://www.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/riv1334/

After washing away the crust, I rubbed everything down with Pledge
wipes (actually the Target equivalent) as recommended by Joe Bell, and
the paint glistens.

Thanks for your patience,

Re: [RBW] Re: SKS Secrets

2010-10-20 Thread David Sprunger
Kevin,

Here's something to avoid. I had a twisted SKS front fender once and
followed someone's advice to try putting it in a warm oven for a few
minutes. I preheated the oven to 250 degrees, turned it off, and then
put the fender in with the timer set for a minute. Unfortunately, I
was distracted by something, and when I remember to check on the
fender, it was irrevocably shriveled. Even worse, the oven and
kitchen smelled of melted plastic for at least a day.

When I got the replacement fenders, I installed them, twist and all,
and over time, the warping subsided (or I quit noticing it).

Good luck with your project.

[RBW] Riv-friendly parts FS (Phil Wood, XTR, WTB, etc)

2010-04-28 Thread David Sprunger
If anyone is stockpiling parts for a new Hunquapillar or just making
some spring adjustments to your current ride, I have identified some
items that are ebay bound unless someone here wants them first. All
prices include US shipping. I’ve priced things below what I think
they’ll likely fetch on ebay, so these prices are fairly firm. Check
or paypal.

Please contact me off the list at sprun...@cord.edu.

Phil Wood wheelset. $400. 36h. 700c. 135 mm rear OLD. Takes 8/9
speed cassette. No skewers or cassettes. Bontrager Fairlane silver
rims with asymmetric rear drilling. Nice cosmetics. I’m the second
owner of these wheels, but the original owner reported that he
purchased them from Rivendell in the pre-Rich days. They spin smooth
and true. The freehub is nice and quiet.

XTR M900 hubset. $135. Hard-to-find 36h version. NOS. 135 mm rear
OLD. Takes 8/9 speed cassette. Screened logos are a bit faded. No
skewers. Build some light and sturdy dream wheels. These are the
classic silver style hubs that Peter White raves about. (Side rant:
where are all the older XTR skewers? I’ve purchased three NOS sets of
these hubs over the last ten years and none have come with skewers.)

Phil Wood quick release axle kit. 135mm. $50. Here’s the axle and
spacers you need to convert a bolt-on hub to quick-release use or to
convert a narrower hub to 135mm OLD. Everything is in excellent
condition. This came off a 10-year-old cassette hub, but supposedly
it will fit a range of Phil hubs.

White Industries platform pedals. Silver. $190. These pedals are new
but without packaging. They’ve not been mounted in a crank. The
pedals are smooth and exquisitely made, but they’re not as wide as I
had hoped for my size 13 feet. I stood on them in the living room and
decided to stick with my Nuovo Wides instead. More info at
http://www.whiteind.com/pedal.html

Tioga Surefoot 8 pedals, silver. $55. This is the BMX pedal that
Rivendell used to sell. The blunt tips are already installed, but I’ll
include the spikes and the little installation wrench. Light and
smooth. Used about 25 miles.

Brooks B17 Champion Special. $100. Rare dark brown color. (not
honey). Silver rails. Ridden about 300 miles, so it’s not really
broken in yet. Leather has been treated. Tension screw never
touched. I’ll include used matching leather bar wrap that’s been cut
into four pieces (I had one piece wrapped up from the tips to the
brake and one from the stem down to the brake.)

WTB Dirt Drop bar. $80. This is the classic drop bar with the
aggressive flair in the drops. I bought this for a conversion that
didn’t happen because I decided that I preferred the more subtle Nitto
Dirt Drops that I got from Rivendell. Sleeve shows some scratches but
the cosmetics are good overall. Takes a 25.4 stem, such as the
Rivendell special edition Technomic Deluxe or the Periscopa.

WTB Slickasaurus tires. 26” x 1.5. Pair. $35. This is a nice set
of 26 inch slicks. They’ve been mounted but ridden less than 10
miles. Blackwalls. I have the 700c version on my Quickbeam, and
they’re a quiet and smooth-riding tire.

Panaracer Pasella 700x37 TG tire. Free for cost of shipping on 7# box
(or I’ll include them absolutely free with a larger item). Ridden
about 1000 miles on a front wheel. Still looks pretty good. Tan
wall.

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Mixtes

2010-05-30 Thread David Sprunger
René,

You asked for the mixte story, so here’s one although maybe not the
one you had in mind. When my wife and I were engaged in the mid-80s,
she volunteered that instead of an engagement ring, she would prefer a
new bicycle. Being frugal self-sufficient graduate/medical students,
we ended up with a lower-end neon Specialized mountain bike that she
rode for some years before putting it aside for a used XO-2.

After two decades of marriage, our circumstances had changed, so for
our 20th anniversary, I bought an unbuilt Glorius frame on ebay and
built up the kind of bike I wish we could have afforded in 1987
(although such a bike was probably not available then). The
Specialized is still in the basement for nostalgia’s sake.

Some pictures are here:
http://www.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/glorius/

The story doesn’t really have a moral except that the Glorius is a
great bike and I married wisely.

Maybe these bikes use the same bottom bracket shell as the Quickbeam,

[RBW] a few more Bombadil pictures

2009-01-06 Thread David Sprunger

Colleagues,

I took pictures of some of the frame details on my clear-coated
Bombadil before I slathered the insides with Boeshield and set the
frame aside while it dries for a few days. You can see the pictures
here:
http://www.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/bombadil/

This is a neat frame, but I notice that the price has gone up again.
A person could now get one of the new Hillbornes complete for the cost
of a bare Bombadil or Atlantis frame. Grim economic times, I guess.

[RBW] Bombadil with Big Apples and fenders

2009-01-18 Thread David Sprunger

Hello again. I wanted to test Grant P's claim that the Bombadil would
have even better clearance than the Atlantis, so I built mine up with
Big Apple tires (the narrower 50mm model) and Berthoud 700x60 fenders.
You can see some pictures here:
http://www.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/bombadil/

It has been cold and snowy here in Fargo, so it will probably be a
while before I can enjoy some riding and dial in all my settings. I
plan to take some better pictures then.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil with Big Apples and fenders

2009-01-18 Thread David Sprunger

Patrick,

I've tried only the Big Apple 50s but I'm confident that the frame
would fit a 60mm tire if the fenders were removed.

According to Rivendell's site, the 48, 52, and 56 cm models take 650b;
60 and 64 are 700c. I usually ride 64-65 frames, but the 60 fits just
fine.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil with Big Apples and fenders

Eric,
I also tried the 60mm Big Apple on the Atlantis with Mavic T520 rims,
and they cleared the fork crown but barely. I became too nervous that
someday if the wheels went out of true, I'd wear through the paint
trying to get home.

Re: [RBW] Looking at the Bullmoose to solve stiffness issues, viewpoints requested.

2014-01-05 Thread David Sprunger
Scot,

I have used both the regular Bullmoose and the Bosco Bullmoose on my
first-generation Bombadil. Both are stiff bars, and both have more rise
than you might think. I usually require a quill stem to be in its highest
position, but I didn't need to raise either of the Bullmoose options to the
max height. As Brian Campbell suggests, the Bosco is definitely higher than
the regular Bullmoose.

An important difference between the bars is in hand placement and
subsequent weight distribution. The regular Bullmoose's flat bar style
required me to lean forward more than I wanted. The Bosca's swept back
design is more like the Albatross and encourages a more upright pedaling
stance.

You can sort of see the difference by contrasting these pictures:
http://wwwp.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/bombadil/bullmoose1.JPG
http://wwwp.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/bombadil/top.JPG

More views of both bars here:
http://wwwp.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/bombadil/

Based on the picture of your current bike, it sounds like the Bosco
Bullmoose would be a better match for your riding preferences. Let us know
what works out for you.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell fancy rain jacket, XL, $375.

2014-07-26 Thread David Sprunger
I’m selling my fancy Rivendell men’s English rain jacket. Size XL. Worn
twice in the threat of rain but never actually in the rain. This is a
really nice jacket, but I usually wear an XLT and had hoped that the
Rivendell design would be longer on the sleeves and body. Instead, it’s
about what an XL always is. Current Rivendell price is $430. $375, shipped
in the US.

I can send pictures if needed, but it looks exactly the jackets well
documented at the Rivendell site:

Re: [RBW] School-bus yellow, mustard

2012-01-06 Thread David Sprunger
Joe,
Here's a link to my Rivendell. It may be brighter than you're looking
for. I think the color was called RB1 yellow. I chose it out of the
old color brochure Rivendell used to send out. I had hoped it would
be a close match to an old yellow Previa we used to drive.
Good look with your quest.

Re: [RBW] Platrack Mod

2012-04-05 Thread David Sprunger
Brian,

The modified struts look great. Thanks for the detailed documentation
on how you did it.

I have wondered sometimes about the necessity of using the lower
struts at all. When the platform is bolted onto the front rack, the
Platrack is already very solid, even -- or especially -- when there's
a basket or the Slickersack across it. As you say, it's probably a
warranty-voiding option, but it does give a cleaner look.

[RBW] WTT: My Nitto R14 Top Rack for your Mark's Rack

2013-03-22 Thread David Sprunger
As the subject line indicates, I'm wondering if any one would like to trade
my Nitto R14 Top Rack for a Mark's rack.

I have been using the top rack on the front of my 60 cm Bombadil, so the
struts are still long. As part of a waiting-for-spring project, I have
switched to a Nitto mini/platrack set up instead. I'd like the Mark's rack
for my wife's Glorius.

You can see the top rack at this link although it is somewhat obscured by a
big loafer:

Quickbeam frame/fork/headset. 64 cm. Orange. The taller sizes are hard to
find these days. Some light beausage but nothing serious. Decals are all
in good shape. Never wrecked. $925, includes US shipping. Discounts for
cash and/or local pickup in Fargo.

Here are some pictures from when the bike was built up:

[RBW] FS: 64cm Quickbeam f/f/hs. Also misc. rims and tires for cost of shipping

2013-06-27 Thread David Sprunger
Why not celebrate the 4th with a new bike?

I still have the 64cm orange Quickbeam f/f/hs, shipped in the US for $900
with modest discounts for pickup and/or non-paypal payment. Pictures here:
http://www.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/qb/

It may be a long shot, but one of my sons is driving from Fargo to south
central Kansas this Saturday. He could deliver the frame somewhere along
the I29-I80-old 81-135 corridor (roughly Fargo, Sioux Falls, Sioux City,
Omaha, Lincoln, York, Salina, Newton).

I also am offering for the cost of shipping a few obscure items that are
still quite usable. They could be added to the bike carton at no charge, or
you could pick them up in Fargo-Moorhead for absolutely free.

1. Mavic M231 28h 26" rims. Pair. Silver. Built once. Great shape, probably
less than 500 miles.

2. Ukai 40h 27" rims. Pair. Silver. Built once. Basic rim in good
condition.

3. Specialized Turbo S tires. Mismatched pair: 700c x 25 for the front and
700c x 28 for the rear. Pair. Black with tan sidewalls. Used but ok.

Pictures on request.

[RBW] A snowy Clem

2015-11-19 Thread David Sprunger
Here are a few shots of my Clem out in the snow. I'll take some better
pictures later, but I wanted to document how the first build turned out.

This is a 59 cm, blue frame. As others have testified, the ride is plush
and stable. I am a bit over 6'3" with short legs and a long torso, and the
fit is comfy.

One feature that really grabs my attention is the generous space at the
widest point between the tire and seat tube. On this setup, it measures
almost 13 cm. The distance really speaks to the long chain stays. By
contrast, that same space on my road custom is only 3 cm (and when we
discussed the design, Grant commented on the "stretched" chain stays). On
my '71 Cinelli and '73 Paramount the corresponding gap is about 3.5 cm. The
angle of the seat post and the tire profile must affect this measurement
too, but it's one I never really noticed before.

Weird. I see the info page plus some pictures. I'll check on the

David,
I have a little storage pod that fits in a water bottle cage. I use it to
hold my phone and wallet sometimes, so I inverted the cage to make sure it
doesn't somehow flop free.

[RBW] 60 cm Cheviot with 50 mm tires?

2015-12-05 Thread David Sprunger
Greetings. I notice in the Cheviot brochure that the largest tire
recommended for the 60 cm Cheviot is 700x50. Have any Cheviot riders used a
tire that large? If so, which tires and with which brakes?
Thanks,

[RBW] WTB: Nitto longboy long stay rack

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Nitto longboy long stay rack

2015-12-14 Thread David Sprunger
I had a similar problem fitting a Nitto large rear rack over a 50mm tire
with fenders on my Bombadil. To gain the extra space, I made some little
extenders out of steel from a toeclip. The rack clears the fender now, but
I suspect that I've compromised my load carrying capacity.

The tab: http://faculty.cord.edu/sprunger/bikes/bombadil/rackextension.JPG

In context: http://faculty.cord.edu/sprunger/bikes/bombadil/bomb-513.jpg

I do not currently have or plan to have fenders on the Cheviot, so I'm
hopeful that the longboy will have enough lift to clear a big tire.

[RBW] FS: Dura-Ace wheels, Dirt Drop bar, Jack Brown tires

2018-09-10 Thread David Sprunger
Cross-posted to Bob and Riv lists

I’m jumping on the fall cleaning bandwagon and offering a few items that
should interest the list.

David Sprunger

Fargo, ND

Dura-Ace wheelset. These wheels are a bit out of the ordinary, being
sturdier and ready for wider tires than many other Dura-Ace wheels. 36h on
700c Dyad rims. Butted Wheelsmith spokes and Newbaum cloth tape. Although
marked 8S, I used these wheels with a 9-speed drivetrain on my Roadeo.
100/130 OLD and with original skewers. Shiny and smoth. $225 plus
shipping by Bikeflights.

Pair of Rivendell Jack Brown Green tires. This is the model without the
tread belt or beefier sidewalls. About 30 miles of wear. $40/pair includes
U.S. shipping.

Classic Rivendell/Nitto dirt drop bar. Don’t let the tape residue fool you.
These bars have seen limited use. Never wrecked. Sleeve is clean. RM013.
Heat treated. This is the wide model – 52 cm between the flared tips.
Milled for bar end shifters. $35 plus shipping.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clicking noise -- About to lose my mind.

2018-05-28 Thread David Sprunger
I share your frustration with a mystery click. I had a similar problem
once, and although the story is not to my credit, it may help.

I had the mystery clicking only when I pedaled hard. It didn't occur when I
was coasting, and I couldn't reproduce the sound in my work stand.

Only after I had removed and reinstalled the pedals, cranks, and bottom
bracket and was preparing to address the seat post and saddle did I notice
that my banana bag was unbuckled and the part of the strap with the buckle
was in a position to knock against the seat post when I twisted the saddle
with strong pedaling. I would have sworn that the sound was much lower in
the bike.

Good luck with your quest. Let us know what you find out.

[RBW] Rivendell tandem question

2016-02-07 Thread David Sprunger
Hi. I read with interest the recent blug post about forward movement on the
Rivendell tandem project. Grant invited people to email him if they wanted
to be added to a list of interested parties, but he did not give his email
address. It used to be gr...@rivbike.com, but my message to that address
bounced back. The email directory for Rivendell does not include an email
link for Grant anymore either.

Does anyone know of another way to be added to the tandem information list?

Thanks,

[RBW] Yet another late winter FS list (Clem Smith, Nitto/MAP/XT cockpit, Choco moose, etc.)

2016-02-24 Thread David Sprunger
Colleagues,

Inspired by all the recent selling activity, I too have gone through my
parts bins and have some items I’m offering here before they go to ebay. If
you have questions, please ask.

Thanks,

David Sprunger

Fargo, ND

-Clem Smith frame, blue, 59 cm. $800. Has the headset, bottom bracket, and
seat post. This is a nice frame. I built it up for a relative who decided
it wasn’t what he wanted after all. Ridden about 10 miles. Pick up in
Fargo, split shipping from 58103, or I could probably deliver along the I94
corridor between Fargo and the twin cities. See
http://faculty.cord.edu/sprunger/sale-Feb16/cockpit2.jpg Compare to
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-csj-59blu.htm

-Cockpit with Nitto dirt drop stem (black, factory drilled for cable
hanger), measures 10cm cc, 25.4 clamp, Ahearne MAP bar (575mm, silver),
Deore XT linear pull levers for vbrakes, Miesha cork grips, shellacked. NO
shifters. I had this on the Clem. Some light scuffs: see jumbo pics:
http://faculty.cord.edu/sprunger/sale-Feb16/cockpit4.jpg ,
http://faculty.cord.edu/sprunger/sale-Feb16/cockpit2.jpg ($80, shipped in
US). I prefer to sell this as a set.

-XT vbrake calipers ($40, shipped in US). Front and rear. Black. These were
on the Clem, so they too were ridden about 10 miles. Pictures:
http://faculty.cord.edu/sprunger/sale-Feb16/xt-brakes.jpg and
http://faculty.cord.edu/sprunger/sale-Feb16/xt-brakes2.jpg

- Choco moose bars ($150, shipped in US). I ordered these from Rivendell
and dry fit them in a frame to get a sense of how they’d fit me. I decided
to stick with my Bosco bars instead. See the Riv description:
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/hb3bm.htm

-Ergon GP1 grips ($18 shipped in US). Large diameter, short length. This
is the Ergon paddle grip in shorter length for Gripshift, children, or
people with smaller hands. NIB. http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/product/gp1

- Miesha’s cork grips ($20, shipped in US). New. Not cut or shellacked. Out
of stock at Riv but here’s their description:
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/gt5norm.htm

 - Shimano FD-AX55 front derailleur ($15 shipped in US). 28.6 clamp. Bottom
pull. The cage has the handy screw that allows one to remove the derailleur
without breaking the chain. The derailleur has not been used. Picture:
http://faculty.cord.edu/sprunger/sale-Feb16/ax-fd-r.jpg

- Seatpost, 27.2 x 300mm, silver. ($15 shipped in US) This is the post
that Riv shipped with my Cheviot. New. Pictures:
http://faculty.cord.edu/sprunger/sale-Feb16/seatpost.jpg and

Re: [RBW] Clementine / Cheviot comparison and random questions

2016-02-29 Thread David Sprunger
Bob,

I have a 60 cm Cheviot and had a 59 cm Clem (trying to sell, actually). The
rides are similar to me, but I had the same wheel set on each bike.

The total length of the Cheviot with Big Apples is about 77". The distance
between tire contact points is more like 52". It may be too long for the
bus rack but should meet the light rail requirements.

Good luck,

Re: [RBW] Re: What's Left (Re: Yet another late winter FS list (Clem Smith,Choco moose))

2016-03-03 Thread David Sprunger
Matt,

Yes, I still have the Choco Moose bars. I greased them and put them on my
Cheviot but after sitting on the bike in my basement ended up sticking with
the Bosco Moose bars instead. I didn't even put levers or grips on the
Chocos. I would definitely say they're in great shape.

My paypal is sprun...@cord.edu.

Let me know if you have other questions. I could take a picture but there's
not much to see that Riv doesn't show better.

[RBW] Update: Cheviot tire clearance

2016-03-06 Thread David Sprunger
Colleagues,

I have been enjoying an uncharacteristically nice March day in Fargo by
tooling about on my Cheviot. Before I got everything wet and dirty, I took
a few pictures, which may be viewed at this link: *http://tinyurl.com/zzcjxwa
<http://tinyurl.com/zzcjxwa>*

As I have worked on this bike, I was worried about tire clearance with the
Big Apples and caliper brakes, but as the pictures show, this was not an
issue in the end.

[RBW] FS: King Cage foot cage, size XL, $40

2016-03-23 Thread David Sprunger
Colleagues,

I discovered one more item in my basement cleaning: a set of
stainless-steel, MUSA foot cages from King Cage. These were size XL, which
are large but not size 13 street shoe large. These look just like versions
on the King pages:
http://www.kingcage.com/products-waterbottle-cages.html
http://www.kingcage.com/assets/img/footCage_lg.jpg

You can use these with straps or as half clips as is. Excellent condition.

$40, shipped in the U.S. I'm selling just the cages. There are no straps or
mounting screws.

Thanks,
David Sprunger
Fargo, ND

p.s. I still have the 59cm Clem frame for sale too.

Re: [RBW] Grips on Albatross bars.

2012-12-24 Thread David Sprunger
Hi. I like the feel (and look) of the older Brooks grips, like these:

.
I can't help but notice, however, that the price seems to have about
doubled from when I bought mine.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Roadeo is different from the Ram/AHH (long post)

Hi. Interesting discussion. Do you use a quill or threadless stem? Even the
bikes with the threadless headsets seem to have bars near the seat level,
but one wonders if the threadless setups have slightly lower bars and if
that characteristic changes one's perception of how the bike handles.

not ridden. The shade of green wasn’t quite what I wanted (vanity of
vanities, saith the Preacher …). $45.

Like this: http://www.vp-usa.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/VP-001GRN.jpg

Berthoud Aspin saddle. Black. Little wear. $145.

Silca Impero pumps. Chromed plastic. Compressed length is about 55 cm;
relaxed length is just over 60 cm. I used these occasionally and
interchangeably under the top tube of a 65cm Rivendell custom with peg and
a vertically on a 63 cm Cinelli. Great shape. Two pumps for sale:

- With stock screw-off plastic head and black tips-- $25.

- With Campy metal head and white tips -- $35.

Small Kangaroo under-saddle bag. There was a discussion of these on the BOB
list in the last month or so. Blue cordura. Dirty but no rips or damage.
Attaches to seat post and saddle rails, which is nice if you don’t have
saddle loops. Use a stiffener to avoid unflattering comparisons to a bull’s
swinging scrotum. $7. Picture here:

Nitto folding stand Holds bike by the rear axle/skewer. Comes apart to
fold flat. $75. Pictures here:

[RBW] Let's hear it for the blue Hubbuhubbuhs

2017-07-19 Thread David Sprunger
Hi. The orange, silver, and sage tandems seem to be well documented, but
the blue ones are sadly neglected. Here are a few pictures of mine. There
is nothing too radical about the build, but the Super Moto X tires push the
capacity of the Motolite brakes.

https://1drv.ms/f/s!Ag4tr1xyXDYDg7pxGnI5571yakNijw

I would like to add a rear rack eventually, but for now, the old Hobo bag
is working fine.

Fun times.

2017-07-19 Thread David Sprunger
Cool. As an alum of the U of I, I endorse that fighting Illini
blue-and-orange color scheme. Fargo is relentlessly flat, so our tandem
does not have a disc brake installed. I had an early 80s tandem with a Phil
Wood drum brake, but never needed to use it.

[RBW] FS: Ruffy Tuffy, Mark's Rack, Baggins, Schwalbe, C17

2015-07-16 Thread David Sprunger
Riders,

I'm listing a few items on ebay later this week, but I thought I'd
offer them here first. All prices include cheapest US shipping.
Paypal ok.

Brooks C17, natural color. Little used. $120.

Nitto M1 (Mark's rack). You get a Mark's rack, diving board, one set
of draw bolts, a pair of P-clamps, and two sets of short struts (one
curved and one straight), but depending on your intended use, you may
have to get some more small parts from Riv or elsewhere. $75. See
your options here: www.rivbike.com/Racks-s/114.htm.

Ruffy Tuffy tires. 700c x 28. Wire bead. Ridden about 20 miles before
I went up a size. $80.

Schwalbe Big Ben tires. 700c x 50. Ridden about 20 miles before I
went up a size with these too. $80.

Baggins leather key fob. This is a basic leather fob onto which is
stamped (rather faintly) a logo reminiscent of the Rivendell seal
with a double B and a pair of stars. It reads "Baggins Bags" across
the top and "Sacks for Travellers" across the bottom. For the bag
matcher who has everything else. $10.

Re: [RBW] What's in your garage?

2015-08-08 Thread David Sprunger
I'm late to this survey, but I have too many bikes without any plan to cull
the herd:

Bikes I ride:
- 64.5 cm Riv custom sport tourer with XTR M900 drive train
- 60 cm Bombadil (1st edition with parallel top tubes) with Suntour XC Pro
drive train
- 63 cm Roadeo with DA 9 drive train
- 64 cm P13 Paramount (1973) set up as Suntour Superbe Pro single speed
- 63 cm Cinelli Special Course (1971) with full NR group (not ridden too
regularly anymore)

Bikes I maintain for others in my family:
- Bridgestone XO2
- 56 cm Glorius
- Specialized Stumpjumper (1983)

Pictures and details:

It's interesting to see what bikes are out there.

[RBW] What happened to clear powder coating

2011-12-08 Thread David Sprunger
In reading Grant's latest post about the new mystery bike, I noted his
comments on potential clear powder coating of the frame. That remark
made me wonder what happened to clear powder coat option that was
promoted heavily 3-4 years ago. My original series Bombadil was clear
coated, and the finish is still solid. Grant's comments imply some
sort of salt issues related perhaps to sea air. Of course, North
Dakota is about as inland as it gets. Should someone with a clear coat
finish anticipate a paint job to preserve the frame?

Re: [RBW] Cheviot dreaming

Joe,
This will be a cool bike. As long as you're getting the custom paint, did
you consider have canti posts added? That's the one thing I wish my Cheviot
had but doesn't. The frame has generous clearance, but tire size is limited
by the brake calipers. (It's certainly easier to spend your money than my
own.)

Re: [RBW] Hubbahhubbah build question - Motolite brakes?

2017-11-19 Thread David Sprunger
Jeremy,

I used Motolite brakes on a Hubbahhubbah, and the fit was fussy. I had to
remove some of the adjustment hardware behind the pads in order to have
more space to play with. In the end, the brakes are great stoppers with
lots of control.

You can see some pictures here:
https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21ABpyOee9cmpDYo8&cid=03365C725CAF2D0E&id=3365C725CAF2D0E%2156693&parId=3365C725CAF2D0E%2156689&o=OneUp
There's one toward the end that shows one side of the rear brake with the
stripped hardware.
