I share your frustration with a mystery click. I had a similar problem once, and although the story is not to my credit, it may help.
I had the mystery clicking only when I pedaled hard. It didn't occur when I was coasting, and I couldn't reproduce the sound in my work stand. Only after I had removed and reinstalled the pedals, cranks, and bottom bracket and was preparing to address the seat post and saddle did I notice that my banana bag was unbuckled and the part of the strap with the buckle was in a position to knock against the seat post when I twisted the saddle with strong pedaling. I would have sworn that the sound was much lower in the bike. Good luck with your quest. Let us know what you find out.
