turn bridgestone into a light, no rack, no bags,

at how great it rides, only possible tweak is the downtube shifters.
i've never used dt shifters, and i'm still awkward getting to them.

Like you, my '95 Road Std came as a frame and two forks set a couple of years
ago. I saw how a prior owner had built it up, and wanted something a little
different. Using the recently introduced Tektro 556 brakes, I converted the
bike
to a 650B, which lets me run bigger rubber. Also like you, I went with downtube
shifters, in this case Silvers from RBW. I had a Leather saddle that was

putting in a longer tension bolt. It has stopped stretching and given many

I disagree about thomson being "the best made, most reliable seatpost on the
planet." They are great, but not the best for all applications.

I'd always go with cold-forged than cnd'ed any day. And Thomsons dont work well
with brooks or other leather saddles with short rails, unless you get the gross

[RBW] Patagonia Shoe Report

2011-03-15 Thread Bruce
Based on past recommendations seen here on the list, I've tried and enjoyed
Addidas Sambas and Virtuvian running shoes. For the past two weeks, I've
pedaled
in something new and really like it for free footed pedaling. Patagonia
"Boaris"
shoes. These are pigskin based (Boar-is, get it? Ugh) and quite sturdy, while
still light. Roomy toe box and not too wide heel (avoids crank arm rub that
some
running shoes give) and a firm (but not solid stiff) Vibram sole. It's this
last
feature that works for me on rides over 50 miles, especially when cranking up
hills a lot. The centers of my arches can get sore from a long hard day on the
pedals and these soles are firm enough for support, but flexible enough to
avoid
being confining.

I got a pair in a discontinued color (that is pretty close to my Saluki's
"Linda
Blair Green" color. Style points, eh?) for cheap at Rue LaLa, but you can
Google
and find them lot's of places at discount.

Tailwinds.

Bruce

Re: [RBW] Japanese Atlantis vs Wisconsin Waterford Atlantis

2011-03-20 Thread Bruce
Echoing Jim's comment below, RBW has gone to some length to assert that the
quality is equal, regardless of location. In some cases where a bike might have
been made at both places in the same time frame, Grant went so far as to say
that buyers had no choice as to which shop would provide their bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: Japanese Atlantis vs Wisconsin Waterford Atlantis

2011-03-21 Thread Bruce
Someone mentioned ( and I admit to sloth here in not culling the posts)
something in the last day or two about a variation between the shops in the
production of the stays. One think I like about my Ram and Saluki is that the
chain stays are not dented in, but taper smoothly for required clearance. Do
the
Waterford bikes also do this?

My local pal Joe has a Waterford built Hillborne and the rear dropouts are
lovely. Nicer looking I think that those on my bikes. I still like my bikes
just
fine...

Re: [RBW] Re: How's the wind in your region?

2011-04-04 Thread Bruce

Winds were 12 - 15 yesterday with gusts (especially those coming off open crop
fields) of 25. Rode 68 miles and fortunately, the winds were mostly calm in the
early hours as we headed into the expected wind direction. The route was an
irregular box shape and we did get the stronger blows later in the day and of
course, when the road surface was coarsest and we were most tired. On the plus
side, the breeze evaporated sweat effectively, so no salt got in my eyes.

This was a charity ride for a children's hospital and I didn't see any Rivs
beside the one I was on. There was a nice old Raleigh Portage whose rider was
in
semi tweed ride regalia. Another fellow on a ss was in full tweed. Forget what
he was pedaling though. I'm a snail, and managed about 12 into the breeze and
18 with it, for an overall in the 15s. Climbed some too. Very pretty day with
an
especially profuse coloring of azaleas and wisteria everywhere.

Rode a relaxer on Saturday on the Saluki and winds were somewhat less. Also
very
pretty day to be out on a bike.

Nope. The simple point being that if they want to market their product to

Re: [RBW] Re: photos old Saluki

2011-04-12 Thread Bruce
Funny, I've read comments on this color (was it officially called "yellowish
green?") for several years on this list. People love it or hate it. I've read
comparisons to diaper contents for example. Mine is this color, and I like it.
It sparkles in the sun, which doesn't seem to show well in pictures. I had
thought though that when repaint time comes I'd like to try the wonderful
claret
wine red I've seen in Jim's gallery, or now lately the persimmony mix that
looks
so nice. That decision is a few years off however. The '95 Road will be 1st up
I
think. Staying with the original blue, but do I go for a cream head tube or
not?
h

Unrelated to green paint, but while we are on the Saluki subject: Mine has had
Oursons on for a few years, and despite racks and fenders and Baggins bags
front
and rear, rides about the same speed as anything else I get on. Looking at the
numbers this year, it has more miles than any of my other 3 bikes, but all are
reasonably close. It has a very nice riding position for a long day in the
saddle. A ride you can still get on the Hilsen, of course.

[RBW] AHH thoughts

2011-04-26 Thread Bruce
A while after looking at some Flickr pics of an AHH frame posted here for sale,
a little light in my head went on. Another poster had commented on the nice
dropouts this Waterford built frame featured, but what caught my subliminal
notice was the tube dimpling that was done to provide clearance. It is
different from the Toyo built Saluki and Ram I ride, both of which have a
change of cross section at the "bend" points, wider "hips" if you will, which
decreases the through thickness of the tubes and allows space needed. I prefer
the shaped Toyo look to the Waterford style. The Waterford rear dropouts though
are very nice. My friend Joe has them also on his Waterford built Hillborne.

Re: [RBW] to make 26" rim'd atlantis fast randonneur: suggestions?

2011-05-11 Thread Bruce
My 559 "go-fast" set up is with 28mm Conti Ultra-Gatorskins at 85 psi.
"sporty" set up is Tim's Paselas at 75 psi. 65 psi makes these quite comfy, but
slower.
37 mm Paselas are plusher, but can be pumped up make them a bit quicker if need
be.

Tim mentions training for speed too. As in, developing a higher rpm spin
instead of casually mashing the pedals as you take in the countryside.

Wouldn't a Waterford worker know to look at the date code on the BB shell?

[RBW] Re: Has anyone used trekking / butterfly bars on a Rivendell?

2011-06-01 Thread Bruce
I also have them on my non-Riv, a 1984 Trek 620, which is my touring
bike. I have had (and toured with) nearly everything on that bike:
narrow drops, moustaches, albatrosses; I like the butterfly bars the
best for the way I use this bike. Because it was an experiment, I got
the cheap Nashbars, but they've worked fine. I have them very high
(above the level of the seat) with a medium long stem; the brake
levers and thumb shifters are on the front outside curve so that I can
use them while holding on to the side straight portion, which tends to
be my default position. The close horizontals are comfortable for
occasional upright riding (as a relief position on tour) or when
riding slowly. The close curves feel quite a lot like the curves on
drop bars (another favorite position). But the straight portion on the
sides puts me in perfect riding position for the long haul. I find I
rarely use the front horizontals (which is where I originally had the
brake levers) except in wind.

I use this bike for commuting also, with lots of sidewalks, potholes,
and stop and go, so I like the control and power the wide side grips
give me.

(My snow commuter has m-bars, and my Ram has 46" noodles.)

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet Serial #'s?

They went in order of manufacture, generally speaking. When I asked John at RBW

Less than totally clean numbers-

And this was at July 2007. Not many more were made after that.

Hi,
Any rhyme or reason to Rambouillet serial numbers?  I was looking at
one on ebay last night and noticed the ser. # was RB0280 (an older
orange one).  I've got a later green  one (RB1163).  Did they just go
in order or is there
 any method to the madness?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet Serial #'s?

They were separate #s. Add them up to get the total. Interesting that most
bikes were sold as frame sets only. I ride # 841 myself, and agree with your
assessment. Mine was a complete bike, and I have tried it with a racier set up,
but gone back to a more all purpose attitude.

I wonder if the 693 frames includes the 432 that were sold as complete
bikes, or was the total number of frames more like the the sum of the
two? I assume the latter because Rob says he has #1163.

Whatever, the Ram was a wonderful and somewhat rare bike and I value
mine highly. It is one of the early ones - orange, serial number under
RB0200. I bought it used so I don't know when it was made. Maybe in
2002?

But the SN's must not be precisely sequential, or at least something
is "off" since SN #1163 is greater than the "total made" =
693+432=1125

It should work, but why? 9 speed chains are more expensive then their
6/7/8 speed counterparts. Unless that is all you got, use the
appropriate chain. Good Luck!

[RBW] Bike Feel (was Simple One)

2010-11-20 Thread Bruce
I just did a Metric on my Saluki today. I'm under 150 lbs and have never felt
the bike was a thudder, just that it was comfortable. Yes, slower than the Road
Standard is, but not by much. Today's ride was mostly on coarse pavement and
some dirt logging roads. The bike was great. I drank the Kool-Aid today, when
for the first time after a couple of years of owning the bike, I DE-flated the
tires down to 50 PSI. Wow, how nice! And not sluggish at all on these kinds of
surfaces. Bike feel comes from a lot of places. Wheels, tires,
handlebars/wraps, saddles. Not just frame tubing, although I certainly don't
discount that.

Re: [RBW] Re: today's ride (alt. title: fenders are good!)

2010-11-22 Thread Bruce
Similarly, on a ride which ranged from 53F - 71F over 100Km, a l/s light Ibex
baselayer under a Joneswares s/s jersey. Joneswares shorts, thin wool socks.
Not
cold enough for wool gloves, but if it were, Ibex for cool, and JC Penny for
cold. I wore a wind jacket for about the 1st hour, then no longer needed it.
Packed one a couple of weeks ago when we climbed Mt Cheaha as well. Going
uphill
the effort was plenty to keep warm, but coming downhill in the cold with a
sweaty kit on necessitated some wind protection. Swobo is very good too,
especially some of the older stuff.

That said, I wear Swobo wool jersies year round. They're perfect _for me_ in
the heat of the summer and the chill of the fall and winter (hey, it was 56F
today!). A SS jersey is fine for 3/4 of the year. I don't ride when it's
pouring, only drizzling, and that is pretty rare in itself. Today's ride was a
bit more than that, and I wasn't really planning on getting too wet.

My Oursons have 1,300 mi  (on a Saluki) on them and show very little wear, if

My Oursons came in today.  They look just great.  I like the Panaracer
packaging (heat sealed plastic bag).  Minimalist, yet keeps them
clean, and I imagine keeps them protected from aging somewhat.

Now the question is whether to start riding them right away or keep
them packaged up for later?  These Oursons could be a good mixed
terrain tire, but my East Bay trails get so muddy that I can't really
do that type of ride nearby until summer.

Re: [RBW] Broken Rail on a Brooks

2010-12-02 Thread Bruce
While steel is quite weldable, welds are strong in the tension direction. They
not strong in the transverse direction in general, and being harder and more
brittle than the base metal, they are more prone to cracking under the
repetitive bending that the saddle frame flex delivers than the base metal
alone is.  Having said that, there are specialty welding alloys with increased
ductility, but more expertise is required to use them than you are likely to
find in a typical "buzz box" garage weld operation.

I'd recommend asking Brooks if you can send the saddle back and have THEM put
your leather top on a new frame.

Best,

Bruce

Hey Gang,
My bike has felt extra bouncy lately. Filled up the tires today
and they were low. Still bouncy. Looked at my brooks saddle rails and
one of them is broken. Looks like it has been that way for a little
while, too. So, good news is that the other rail is strong, bad news
is its broken. This saddle has 10,000 plus miles easy. Lots of touring
time. So, I don't want to replace it because the top is so perfectly
broken in, and there is a ton of nose bolt left. I know I can get a
replacement frame from Wallingford ($31), or I can have my roommate
weld it for me and see how that holds up. The saddle is not under
warranty (about 5 years old or so). So my question is if any of yall
have welded a busted rail or replaced a frame? Tips? Hints? Make me
feel better cuz I'm a bit bummed (pun?) about this.

   Thanks

Hey all,

I've been lurking for a while and it seems like today is the day that everyone
posts their new build / bike so I decided to follow suit.

My family and I stopped by the RBWHQ this afternoon and picked up my new Roadeo
frame.

55cm Roadeo in British Racing Green with S&S couplers

I am building it up with mostly Ultegra level components and some 105.
I am waiting for the rest of the parts to arrive next week and I'll update the
set on Flickr as it gets built.

Wife rode a 58 Betty Foy and was really enjoying it. Guess I need to start
saving up for a new frame.

some steep climbing tossed in to remind us not to neglect hills over the Winter

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar Wrap - Why Not Leather?

2011-01-03 Thread Bruce
I've tried a number of leather wraps. My sweat a lot in the humid Alabama
summers and leach a ton of salt. My observations on what I have used:

V-O Elk skin sew ons: Look Cool, get gamey after about 2,000 miles of use. I
used them without padding under and they were fine. Longer to install than most
other types. Bargain priced.

Hitoshi perforated tape: Looks great, goes on easy, has double sided adhesive
on
the underside. Lasted me about 1,000 miles before the edges curled up and it
looked ratty. This tape uses the leather thickness as a padding and is comfy.
Medium priced.

Selle Anatomica watershed tape. Comes with placeable gel under pads. Not
adhesive backed, thin leather. Difficult to install neatly, doesn't stay in
place, not comfy, surface finish begins to wear off immediately. Not worn out
yet so no mileage figure avail. Moderate high price. NOT recommended.

Brooks perforated tape. Similar to Toshi, nicer leather. has adhesive also.
Looks good installed, very durable, have not been avle to wear it out yet, have
it on two bikes. Higher priced.

How can one possibly do long rides on a low carbohydrate regimen?

I cannot figure out how to do a long ride - - say, anything more than
3 hours, or certainly something in the 8 - 10 hour range - - without
consuming lots of carbohydrates.

How do those of you that ascribe to this nutritional plan get through
multi-hour rides?

builder?

I can do that - http://tinyurl.com/6b7py6o

(although that now heaves it over to OT, as it is not a Rivendell
bicycle in the photo).

Re: [RBW] Re: Toyo versus Waterford Atlantis

2011-01-26 Thread Bruce
Current Atlantis production is Waterford. Up until last year (I think), they
came from Toyo. Toyo was the only source for Rambouillet, Saluki and
Romulus/Redwood. AHH was blended as you suggest, and is now all Waterford. I
think if you get them to take an order for a Legolas, it would come from
Waterford as well. The website currently shows Bombadil, Rodeo, Atlantis, and
Hilsen as US made (Waterford). Hunqapillar, Gomez, Foy, Amos, Simpleone as
Taiwan made (Maxway)

As far as I know, Atlantises (Atlanti?) were only Toyo-built. But I'm
sure that someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

My impression is that later models...I'm thinking of the AHH in
particular ...were either Toyo or Waterford-built. And as others on
this thread have noted, the Sams are either built by Waterford or in
Taiwan under the supervision of Toyo

That being said, regardless of the origin, Grant's design philosophy
and attention to detail are evident...you say tomaytoes and I say
tomaahtoes . Rivendells are great bikes
