Re: [RBW] Best sellers-worst sellers
I've tried a number RBW and V-O items. All were less expensive, less sturdily made and less satisfactory than similar goods bought at RBW. Grant's approach is simple stuff that looks good and works well every time. Chris's approach is affordable repros of classy designs that may or may not work well, but look good doing it. I agree that the Silver DT shifters used to build up my '95 Road Std are the best working of any that I have tried. Need to replace the flimsy V-O cages tho From: William despite what Chris at VO says, I'd run suntours or silvers over the Simplex/Mavic ones any day. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Every bike has a story.
Jason: Like you, my '95 Road Std came as a frame and two forks set a couple of years ago. I saw how a prior owner had built it up, and wanted something a little different. Using the recently introduced Tektro 556 brakes, I converted the bike to a 650B, which lets me run bigger rubber. Also like you, I went with downtube shifters, in this case Silvers from RBW. I had a Leather saddle that was perfect in comfort but had overstretched (by a prior owner) but which was salvaged by putting in a longer tension bolt. It has stopped stretching and given many miles of useful service since making that fix. Our bikes are the same color and I list my components next to yours below to compare. [RBW] Patagonia Shoe Report
Based on past recommendations seen here on the list, I've tried and enjoyed Addidas Sambas and Virtuvian running shoes. For the past two weeks, I've pedaled in something new and really like it for free footed pedaling. Patagonia "Boaris" shoes. These are pigskin based (Boar-is, get it? Ugh) and quite sturdy, while still light. Roomy toe box and not too wide heel (avoids crank arm rub that some running shoes give) and a firm (but not solid stiff) Vibram sole. It's this last feature that works for me on rides over 50 miles, especially when cranking up hills a lot. The centers of my arches can get sore from a long hard day on the pedals and these soles are firm enough for support, but flexible enough to avoid being confining. I got a pair in a discontinued color (that is pretty close to my Saluki's "Linda Blair Green" color. Style points, eh?) for cheap at Rue LaLa, but you can Google and find them lot's of places at discount. Tailwinds. Re: [RBW] Re: How's the wind in your region?
Winds were 12 - 15 yesterday with gusts (especially those coming off open crop fields) of 25. Rode 68 miles and fortunately, the winds were mostly calm in the early hours as we headed into the expected wind direction. The route was an irregular box shape and we did get the stronger blows later in the day and of course, when the road surface was coarsest and we were most tired. On the plus side, the breeze evaporated sweat effectively, so no salt got in my eyes. This was a charity ride for a children's hospital and I didn't see any Rivs beside the one I was on. There was a nice old Raleigh Portage whose rider was in semi tweed ride regalia. Another fellow on a ss was in full tweed. Forget what he was pedaling though. I'm a snail, and managed about 12 into the breeze and 18 with it, for an overall in the 15s. Climbed some too. Very pretty day with an especially profuse coloring of azaleas and wisteria everywhere. Rode a relaxer on Saturday on the Saluki and winds were somewhat less. Also very pretty day to be out on a bike. Re: [RBW] New bicycling shoes from Timberland
Au contraire, Pierre! What about laterally stiff and vertically compliant? Must be the shoes!! I'll also mention that I find Patagonia Boaris shoes with a firm Vibram sole to be excellent for unclipped in pedaling. They work well for walking/hiking application as well. Re: [RBW] Re: photos old Saluki
Funny, I've read comments on this color (was it officially called "yellowish green?") for several years on this list. People love it or hate it. I've read comparisons to diaper contents for example. Mine is this color, and I like it. It sparkles in the sun, which doesn't seem to show well in pictures. I had thought though that when repaint time comes I'd like to try the wonderful claret wine red I've seen in Jim's gallery, or now lately the persimmony mix that looks so nice. That decision is a few years off however. The '95 Road will be 1st up I think. Staying with the original blue, but do I go for a cream head tube or not? h Unrelated to green paint, but while we are on the Saluki subject: Mine has had Oursons on for a few years, and despite racks and fenders and Baggins bags front and rear, rides about the same speed as anything else I get on. Looking at the numbers this year, it has more miles than any of my other 3 bikes, but all are reasonably close. It has a very nice riding position for a long day in the saddle. A ride you can still get on the Hilsen, of course. [RBW] AHH thoughts
A while after looking at some Flickr pics of an AHH frame posted here for sale, a little light in my head went on. Another poster had commented on the nice dropouts this Waterford built frame featured, but what caught my subliminal notice was the tube dimpling that was done to provide clearance. It is different from the Toyo built Saluki and Ram I ride, both of which have a change of cross section at the "bend" points, wider "hips" if you will, which decreases the through thickness of the tubes and allows space needed. I prefer the shaped Toyo look to the Waterford style. The Waterford rear dropouts though are very nice. My friend Joe has them also on his Waterford built Hillborne. [RBW] Re: Has anyone used trekking / butterfly bars on a Rivendell?
I also have them on my non-Riv, a 1984 Trek 620, which is my touring bike. I have had (and toured with) nearly everything on that bike: narrow drops, moustaches, albatrosses; I like the butterfly bars the best for the way I use this bike. Because it was an experiment, I got the cheap Nashbars, but they've worked fine. I have them very high (above the level of the seat) with a medium long stem; the brake levers and thumb shifters are on the front outside curve so that I can use them while holding on to the side straight portion, which tends to be my default position. The close horizontals are comfortable for occasional upright riding (as a relief position on tour) or when riding slowly. The close curves feel quite a lot like the curves on drop bars (another favorite position). But the straight portion on the sides puts me in perfect riding position for the long haul. I find I rarely use the front horizontals (which is where I originally had the brake levers) except in wind. I use this bike for commuting also, with lots of sidewalks, potholes, and stop and go, so I like the control and power the wide side grips give me. (My snow commuter has m-bars, and my Ram has 46" noodles.) They were separate #s. Add them up to get the total. Interesting that most bikes were sold as frame sets only. I ride # 841 myself, and agree with your assessment. [RBW] Bike Feel (was Simple One)
I just did a Metric on my Saluki today. I'm under 150 lbs and have never felt the bike was a thudder, just that it was comfortable. Yes, slower than the Road Standard is, but not by much. Today's ride was mostly on coarse pavement and some dirt logging roads. The bike was great. I drank the Kool-Aid today, when for the first time after a couple of years of owning the bike, I DE-flated the tires down to 50 PSI. Wow, how nice! And not sluggish at all on these kinds of surfaces. Bike feel comes from a lot of places. Wheels, tires, handlebars/wraps, saddles. Not just frame tubing, although I certainly don't discount that. They not strong in the transverse direction in general, and being harder and more brittle than the base metal, they are more prone to cracking under the repetitive bending that the saddle frame flex delivers than the base metal alone is. Having said that, there are specialty welding alloys with increased ductility, but more expertise is required to use them than you are likely to find in a typical "buzz box" garage weld operation. I'd recommend asking Brooks if you can send the saddle back and have THEM put your leather top on a new frame. Best, Bruce --- On Thu, 12/2/10, scott wrote: From: scott Subject: [RBW] Broken Rail on a Brooks To: "RBW Owners Bunch" Date: Thursday, December 2, 2010, 2:47 PM Hey Gang, My bike has felt extra bouncy lately. Filled up the tires today and they were low. Still bouncy. Looked at my brooks saddle rails and one of them is broken. Looks like it has been that way for a little while, too. So, good news is that the other rail is strong, bad news is its broken. This saddle has 10,000 plus miles easy. Lots of touring time. So, I don't want to replace it because the top is so perfectly broken in, and there is a ton of nose bolt left. I know I can get a replacement frame from Wallingford ($31), or I can have my roommate weld it for me and see how that holds up. The saddle is not under warranty (about 5 years old or so). So my question is if any of yall have welded a busted rail or replaced a frame? Tips? Hints? Make me feel better cuz I'm a bit bummed (pun?) about this. Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar Wrap - Why Not Leather?
I've tried a number of leather wraps. My sweat a lot in the humid Alabama summers and leach a ton of salt. My observations on what I have used: V-O Elk skin sew ons: Look Cool, get gamey after about 2,000 miles of use. I used them without padding under and they were fine. Longer to install than most other types. Bargain priced. Hitoshi perforated tape: Looks great, goes on easy, has double sided adhesive on the underside. Lasted me about 1,000 miles before the edges curled up and it looked ratty. This tape uses the leather thickness as a padding and is comfy. Medium priced. Selle Anatomica watershed tape. Comes with placeable gel under pads. Not adhesive backed, thin leather. Difficult to install neatly, doesn't stay in place, not comfy, surface finish begins to wear off immediately. Not worn out yet so no mileage figure avail. Moderate high price. NOT recommended. Brooks perforated tape. Similar to Toshi, nicer leather. has adhesive also. Looks good installed, very durable, have not been avle to wear it out yet, have it on two bikes. Higher priced. 23F here, but may make it to 50F. Heading out in an hour for 50 on the Rambouillet. Have replaced the Sugino triple with an Ultegra 52/42/30 that I like a lot. 42 seems a very useful gear, where 36 is too small to cruise on and too large for stiff climbs. The bike is running 28 mm Conti UltraGatorskins. Excellent tires. An old Maruishi Crit racer converted to 650B that came from another list member is running the GB Cypres and they have also been excellent.About 2,000 flat free miles so far. Tailwinds! Looks like yet another trainer session.. I think you'll really end up liking the GB's. I have 30's on several bikes and they are great! Re: [RBW] Re: tweed knit sweaters are coming back!
You can get these from Woolistic, including some that Riv used to carry. I was the very happy recipient of two for my birthday this past year! [RBW] Great Ride Today
1st metric of the new year on my '95 Road Standard. 28F and flags straight out from their poles in the wind, but by George, the bike got it done and carried me along with it! A steel Bilenky, a Ritchey Breakaway (Ti-C) and a Madone kept us in good company . Pari-Moto tires (this bike is running 650B wheels) continue to perform admirably. They are fast on rough stuff and plenty plush at 65 psi (55 - 75 is the rated range) Tailwinds Bruce From: CycloFiend Hope everyone can have a great ride today! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Toyo versus Waterford Atlantis
Rivendell has said on several occasions that the quality of the bikes is the same. The noted that the tubing is a different mix of brands, but also equally good. Re: [RBW] Re: Toyo versus Waterford Atlantis
Current Atlantis production is Waterford. Up until last year (I think), they came from Toyo. Toyo was the only source for Rambouillet, Saluki and Romulus/Redwood. AHH was blended as you suggest, and is now all Waterford. I think if you get them to take an order for a Legolas, it would come from Waterford as well. The website currently shows Bombadil, Rodeo, Atlantis, and Hilsen as US made (Waterford). Hunqapillar, Gomez, Foy, Amos, Simpleone as Taiwan made (Maxway) From: Ryan To: RBW Owners Bunch Sent: Wed, January 26, 2011 12:19:28 PM Subject: [RBW] Re: Toyo versus Waterford Atlantis As far as I know, Atlantises (Atlanti?) were only Toyo-built. But I'm sure that someone will correct me if I'm wrong. My impression is that later models...I'm thinking of the AHH in particular ...were either Toyo or Waterford-built. And as others on this thread have noted, the Sams are either built by Waterford or in Taiwan under the supervision of Toyo That being said, regardless of the origin, Grant's design philosophy and attention to detail are evident...you say tomaytoes and I say tomaahtoes .
