[RBW] Re: How heavy a front load on lowriders on a Rivendell road bike?

2018-05-03 Thread Nick Payne
My wife and I used to tour on our tandem with just a pair of extremely large
home made front panniers. We would tour for up to a month at a time with that
setup. I certainly preferred the handling with that setup compared to having
the load split front and rear. You do need a rack that can take the load,
though. We broke a couple of Blackburn lowrider racks before buying a Bruce
Gordon, which is still going strong over 30 years later.

Here's a photo taken on a three week tour of Tasmania.

Tim,
I have 2.1 Nano's on mine, and they are surprisingly fine on pavement and
of course have a bit of off-road tread, too. Great on paths or gravel.
The center of these tires is raised to increase road performance...and not
too noisy.

Having said that, I will def be trying a pair of the 55 Antelope Hill
Compass tires when they become available, supposedly late this Spring or

2018-05-03 Thread Christopher Murray
I’ve owned six: Ram, Bleriot, Appa, Quickbeam, Rodeo, Roadini. The Roadini just
arrived this week and isn’t built yet. Of the remaining five the Bleriot has
been my favorite. I’m most excited about the Roadini though. It’s beautiful and
simple. I picked it up from James and Candice at Analog during the sale- frame,
fork, headset, seatpost, and bb for $745. Will it ride like a Ram and Rodeo?
I’m excited to find out.

So the Roadini is my favorite at the moment not for the ride (bc I haven’t
ridden it) but for what it could be.

2018-05-03 Thread lconley
I have had a total of 10, still own 9: 2 @ 56 cm DTT Sams - sold the 1st
one - identical frames except the color; 52 cm Bombadil; Rosco Bubbe V1;
Protovelo/Protopaloosa/Mystery bike; 57 cm Frank Jones, Sr; 52 cm
Clementine; small Hubbuhubbuh; Medium Mountain Mixte - never ridden still
building; 60 cm (59 cm?) Betty Foy.
Doesn't include the 47 cm 650b Roadini I ordered last night - building for
a friend.

The Bombadil has the most miles on it and the Frank Jones is the most
recent build (completed) and most recently ridden.

I'd probably have to go with the Frank Jones, there is just something about
the simplicity and elegance of a 1 speed. It is also the one with the most
traditional diamond frame, hmmm.

Re: [RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-03 Thread Patrick Moore
Christopher: I'm interested to hear your opinion of any differences in
handling and "feel" between the Ram and the Roadeo, as I've owned a Ram and
am interested in a Roadeo. I thought the Ram felt a wee bit too sedate for
my taste.

And: Curious why you bought a Roadini when you have the Ram and Roadeo:
what do you hope to get from this that you don't get from the others?

Aside: it is interesting that the model most selected in this thread has
been the Quickbeam. If I didn't have 2 Riv fixies already, I'd order one.
In other threads, the Atlantis and Sam Hill have been called out.

Roadeo versus Legolas: what's the difference in ride and feel?

I have to say that the Leglolas is the most beautiful model, apart perhaps
from that curved, 2X tt Atlantis (which I like to look at but wouldn't want
to own). (They got that curved, second tt just right; the bit of asymmetry
is perfect.

Patrick, I’ll chime in on your question to Don about the Roadeo. Last year I
bought a 53cm frame from a list member and finally got it on the road a month
or so ago. Not a lot of miles on it yet but the biggest adjustment was the 700c
wheels. My other Rivs are a 53 Atlantis (26” wheels) and a 51 Sam (650b).

It’s been years since I rode a 700c road bike so initially the Roadeo had this
“big” or tall feeling. I’m so accustomed to the smaller wheeled bikes!

That said, I’m adapting and the transition among wheel sizes is familiar and
easier now. The Roadeo is a fun ride and much smoother and stable than my
previous 700 wheeled bikes. Tires are 35mm Paselas which eliminates the use of
fenders. I’ve carried my yoga mat in a saddle bag along with a few other items
and there is no negative effect on the handling.

Love all my Rivs and feel lucky to have three to choose from. Hope you can one
day lasso a Roadeo!

Best,
Richard

[RBW] Re: Made in Taiwan AHH?

2018-05-03 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
The catalog go into who gonna make what bikes where for how much and how
good they are. What it doesn't say (on p.4, the page that addresses this)
got left out not to sneak, but for two other reasons--easy to read bad
stuff into it, and there wasn't enough space to nuance it so you wouldn't.
It is that for Homers and Atlantises we have a longer leash/fewer design
restrictions in Taiwan than we do now in America. As the designs e- or
de-volve (as we're all free to see it!), we here at RBW find ourselves
drifting over to the sources that can happily and expertly pull off all the
dimensions and details, and then deliver frames we can sell for $1,100 or
so less.
It's counter-everything you've been reared to believe, that quality and
value can go up as price goes down, but there you go.

Top tube slopes are always going to be a concern, but as somebody pointed
out, rather than paint horizontal as THE "classic" or so style, it's better
to say it was the common style for 32 years beginning 1950. I don't know
how precise those dates are, but they make the point that historically, top
tube slopes have been all over the map (protractor?). We're not shooting
for "the 1890s look" or anything like that. It's more like we're not making
bikes to conform to an era that was characterized by explosive growth and
maturation of cycling in America, which copied for good and for bad the
racing styles of the day.

Rivendells end up being a mix of tradition and irreverence, which means we
disappoint those who want us to keep the flame juiced and be the
Poghliaghis of Walnut Creek; and we're too backwards for the Scatante
carbon-disc crowd. I don't see our bikes as a compromised combo. They hit a
good spot, but it has to be a spot that feels good to be hit, and it's not
one of those for everybody---which isn't to say I don't wish it was or
don't think it ought to be, just that it can't be. We're lucky to be here,
recently saved and thankful, and on we go, comrades!

[RBW] Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-03 Thread Surlyprof
My canti-Hillborne is the best fitting, best riding most comfortable bike I’ve
ever owned. The 700c Velocity wheels with Barlow Pass ELs are so wonderful on
the road. A sturdier wheelset with Smart Sams radically changes the bike’s
personality.

All that said... I’ve ridden the 650b Clem and Hunq test models and, at 5’10”,
I think a 650b is ideal. The 650b 1x10 Hunq at HQ would be my favorite. The
new MIT Atlantis also had me tempted but the 56 sold out before I could get to
HQ for the test ride. Looking forward to hearing more about the rumored fatter
tires potentially on the horizon.

...still won’t give up my Sam. It brings a big smile to my face with every
ride.

Alan,

I have the 56 canti from around that time with the 57.5 tt. To provide some
comparison, my pbh is 86 and saddle height is 75ish. I have aprox. 50% more
seatpost exposed. Initially, I thought the standover was a little tight but
came to realize that the bike fits me better than any nike could. I thought it
looked like you might be on the low end of the fit range for that bike. If
it’s a reach issue, it looks like you might be able to scooch the seat forward
a cm or two. I use an 8cm stem with Albastache bars and an 11cm with
Albatross. Seatpost is centered on the rails.

Hope that helps.

In my experience barefoot/minimalist type shoes with little-to-no heel
rigidity result in fewer injuries. I've tweaked my ankle pretty badly with
regular shoes (with the molded plastic base that supposedly provide
"support"). If my foot slips unexpectedly, the heal can get caught and act
as a wedge, exerting way more force on my ankle than a minimal shoe.
Distant 2nd choice would be the alpine style hiking boots with
over-the-ankle cover, but unless it's very tight (like hockey skates),
there is always be enough play to really tweak my ankles if I slip.

is built different enough but I have been riding the XO-3 this week. It's
built up a la Crust Bikes with a dirt drop stem, 46 cm noodles & schwalbe
Kojaks. It's real "springy" and different from my other bikes. I recently
setup the QB with dirt drops, rode it in my parking garage to tune it, and will
be switching back to the albatross cockpit I had on it. I think I'm dialed in
for a long time since I have a 26", 650b & 700c bikes. Lots of QB love on this

refreshing and so I ride it for awhile and repeat the process.

Have a plan (and tell someone), bring enough water and food, start with
shorter/easier hikes, check the weather, and have fun. I’ve sold hiking/
climbing gear for 10 years and it is amazing how complicated you can make
something that can be as uncomplicated as walking in the woods. If you enjoy it
you will learn about it organically.

I would recommend having a comfortable dedicated backpack and putting a first
aid kit and some emergency food (I use high quality single serve dog food
samples— then I DEFINITELY won’t eat it unless it’s an actual emergency).

No. My Bombadil is green with diagatube and tentacles. I am currently
changing from Bullmoose bars to Randonneur bars. This is the before picture
(at the office) not a good picture, but all I have..

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-03 Thread phil k
I've owned a Sam Hillborne, Cheviot, Hunqapillar, Soma San Marcos.

I ditched the Riv bikes for a bit with a low trail custom, which I love.
But I also got a canti Sam for dirt riding.

Overall, I think the Cheviot was my favorite bike, though I wish it had
cantis instead of sidepulls.

[RBW] Re: OT but mentioned on the Blahg: Hiking

2018-05-03 Thread phil k
I do most of my hiking / backpacking along the Appalachian Mtns, with a bit
of hiking / backpacking in Colorado/Wyoming, not sure where you are but
some general suggestions:

-Know your hiking trail - mileage terrain, route etc. Depending on terrain,
hiking 2 miles is not equivalent to walking 2 miles on the sidewalk in your
neighborhood. Print out a map of the trail just in case. If you're gonna be
on a trail that is less kept up, then a compass would be good too.

-Check the forecast - even if the precipitation chance is low bring a
packable light rain jacket.

-Bring snacks, bring water. Don't drink coffee / energy drinks before you
hike, you will dehydrate. Bring snacks that can also hydrate you and give
you a natural energy boost- fruits like oranges, apples.

-Chacos are nice for summer/water crossings. I have merril hiking boots for
more rocky terrain. Either way ankle support is important. Boots are pretty
necessary where I hike which is usually mountain ranges.

-If you're in bear country, bring bear mace, getting a bell is nice if
you're really out in the bush.

-First aid kit if you want to be safe

-I prefer packable walking sticks that break down and easy to stow away
when you don't need it. They are super helpful on long climbs of dirt
trails, but can be cumbersome on rock scrambles and sections that require
bouldering.

-I like to bring a packable hammock and a book. Usually will hike to the
summit, set up hammock, read, eat lunch, rest, then pack up and descend. I
like breaking up my route in 2 parts, it's mentally and physically easier
for me to tackle longer 10-15 mile hikes this way.

Re: [RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-03 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the Roadeo input. Odd that you should find it tall; I don't
recall my Sam Hill or Ram feeling taller than the 26" custom Roads; they
did feel less nimble, and this I think was due to the greater moment of
inertial with the taller, and heavier wheels. If I get a Roadeo, it will,
for sure, have the lightest wheels and tires I can afford.

Odd, though; the Matthews has wheels that are 29 1/2" tall compared to the
24 3/4" of the Rivs; but I don't feel "tippy" or particularly tall;
Chauncey built it with a great deal of bb drop, I guess. I do recall that
my earlier '96 Bontrager Race Lite did feel very tall and tippy, and that
with 559X55 wheels.

The current set is Schwalbe Marathon 1.75" on Atlas wheels and there seems

The RTP sound great, especially if I can still add fenders later if

Re: [RBW] OT but mentioned on the Blahg: Hiking

2018-05-03 Thread Patrick Moore
I didn't see hiking mentioned there; that's fine, though.

You can't walk, you know, unless to subscribe to *WALKING!* and spend at
least $3,675.00 on kit.

I ought to do more hiking, especially since I live 100 yards from some
pretty bosque trails. If I ever stop cycling, it will be hiking, or walking
-- what's the difference? -- that I'd turn to.

Good shoes and socks; I use thick wool ones from Costco, and bought my
walking shoes at a REI parking lot sale.

Warm weather gear:

Good hat for sun. I found a nice-ish straw panama hat which works well;
ventilated; tho' a hole is growing in the crown.

Shades. The light here makes the light on the Santa Monica beach look like
the winter sky in Finland.

Clothes that breathe. I don't wear anything else, so it's my usual khaki
cutoffs, cotton or better rayon shirt.

Sunscreen for your fair-skinned folks. I never use it.

Walking stick, just to have something to swing. Mine was made in Mombasa
50+ years ago; I bought it from a street vendor for my father, and
inherited it back. Some sort of reddish hardwood that maker had transformed
into ebony with black shoe polish; knob in shape of a Bantu head with,
coiling up from the bottom, a snake encircling the stick.

Water if you are going to be out for a couple of hours, but I don't need it
for an hour.

But Joe, you know all this, right?

Well said! Hike with whatever you have. I have hiked with leather boots
to barefoot and everything between and I haven't noticed a difference in my
enjoyment of the trails (except when my wimpy feet get sore from going
barefoot!). Barring previous injuries that require it, ankle support is
not needed, although it can be helpful on scree fields or super loose and
steep terrain. If you don't have much ankle strength, start short and work
your way to longer trips over time to allow for all the little muscles and
ligaments to strengthen.

As for hiking poles, I do have a chronic knee issue and poles of some kind
reduce some of the impact to my knee. Usually a good ole stick found in
the woods does the trick. Hiking this simple way, one cannot help evoking
thoughts of Mr. Muir.

I only have one, a 51cm red Rosco Bubbe, so it's my favorite. In the year
I've had it, it's great for everything I've had the opportunity to do with
it. Rocky and rooty MA trails, to a 100k Populaire, VT dirt roads, getting
me to and from work. Super stable, never twitchy, but not heavy or sluggish
at all. The best thing I can say is that it always encourages me to take

Oh, but do know the dangerous critters and vegetation in the area as well
as how to deal with them. Someone mentioned bears already, but know what
to do if you encounter a mountain lion, moose, rattlesnake, angry pigs,
cows with horns who escaped their fence, etc. Also, we have heaps of deer
ticks that carry lyme disease, so I do at least two thorough tick checks
after spending time in the woods. Those little buggers know how to hide!
Know how to identify poisen oak, ivy, wild parsnip, or any other
"uncomfortable" plants that your area might have. Seasoned locals are
often the best to ask about those sorts of things. Then, enjoy travelling
a slower pace!

I prefer sandals, specifically Luna Sandals in a model with a sole with a
bit of traction. These are the sandals first inspired by the Tarahumara as
documented in the book, Born to Run. I figure if they're good enough for
folks running long distance trail races, they should be good enough for me
to use for very short distances also. I like them and have several pair.

another matter, but none were raised in the original question.

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-03 Thread LBleriot
I'll play. I own a Bleriot, a custom 650B, an orange Ram, a Rom, a Roadeo,
a Roadini, a Heron Road and a Soma San Marcos (the last two being Riv
inspired or designed). As you can tell, the needle is kinda stuck. I live
on Long Island which is mostly flat and paved but punctuated with steep
short hills on the north shore and pot holes galore in Spring. My favorite
is the protovelo Rom. I don't know why. They are all built similarly.
The Rom is silver and with only one decal is the cleanest looking-most
comfortable-while-sprightly, one of the bunch. The Heron is a pure joy
with its "narrow" 28c tires. The Bleriot gets the least love although it's
the most dressed up with Berthoud fenders, rack and top shelf components.
It looks the part, but is a bit sluggish and has been relegated to winter
riding. The Roadini and San Marcos fight it out for rainy day rides as
both are fendered and yet fairly light and snappy. The creamsicle Ram is
just plain fun.

I use trekking poles and whatever shoes (or flip-flops) that I have on. I
have the same problem with hiking boots as I do with cycling shoes - nobody
makes them that fit me so I don't use them. I spent an hour or so in the
REI in downtown Seattle and they didn't have anything that fit me (wide
feet + extremely high arch). I do not trust my balance going down hill and
it really slows me down if I don't have the sticks. Amazing how much easier
it is to ride than walk.

[RBW] MTBubbe Update

2018-05-03 Thread Paul Clifton
A lot happened over the last 8 months or so, so I've been pretty content
riding my MTBubbe when I got the chance, rather than working on it, so
until last week, the bars were way to high and close.

But a couple weeks ago, I found out that the local MTB group,
www.sorbaatlanta.org, was just about done building a few miles of single
track in a park less than a mile from my house. So I had to go check it
out. Here's how the bike looked the first time I went:

Bars too high and too close, 1.8" semi-slick Gravel Kings. It turns out the
trail is an awesome mix of flow, with bumps and berms and jumps and stuff,
with some technical climbing, and some fast straight downhill. This photo
is probably the flattest part of the trail. I definitely lost traction in
some spots, especially on climbs. The bike still felt great, but it was
really time to swap the stem, at least.

I also borrowed an old 2.35" wide tire from a friend of mine to do a test
fit, and ended up with a mullet bike:

Business in the front. Party in the back! I did a couple laps in my
backyard to test out the tire, and decided I should go ahead and try out
the MTBubbe as a mountain bike. So I got a pair of Neo Motos and headed to
the trail last night.

Holy cow. I'm beat today. The trail is basically along either side of a
drainage wash that goes into a fairly big creek (a tributary of Camp Creek
for you Civil War buffs), so there is not a single flat spot. There is an
inner loop and an outer loop. I did both loops twice. So maybe 5 or 6
miles. I'll take some pictures of the trail next time I go, but I was
having too much fun riding and just grabbed a quick photo at the end of the
ride.

The tires are a huge improvement! So is the stem. I've learned a lot
already, riding these trails.

1. The Albatross bars are comfy on the trail and give plenty of control,
but they're a little impractical. They bump my knees in tight turns. I've
got a Jitensha bar and some rapid fire shifters that I'm going to try out
when I get a 26.0 clamp stem. I'm really hoping to try out that new curvy
bar that's been rumored around here.

2. Use the front brake, man. I usually use both brakes together, but on the
dirt, the back tire skids so easily that it's better to just not use it
most of the time. I headed into a steep downhill section a little too fast,
and had to almost lock down the front wheel to get through it. If I'd
locked up the back wheel, I would've been in trouble. These Avid v-brakes
are amazing though! They always seem to have a little more power to give.
Front braking also makes bermed corners more fun and flowy.

3. Nobbies make a difference on dirt, at least for me. I read a good bit
about tread before buying these tires. I'm not sure I came to any
conclusions. The Neo Motos seemed good, and as seems to be the case with
Panaracer, they were a good price too. I can definitely clear a couple
spots that I couldn't on the semi-slick Gravel Kings, but the ride to the
trail isn't as smooth.

4. MTB riders know what they're doing with high bottom brackets, single
tiny front chainrings, and short crank arms. There are places that my big
ring and bottom bracket just won't clear on these trails. I'll have to
figure out a line to take that doesn't bottom out my bike.

So the MTBubbe fits 2.3" Neo Motos on Atlas rims, and it really is an
insanely versatile and fun bike. I can't wait to ride some more trails!
This opens up a whole new chunk of the city to ramble around.

Any suggestions for a seat post that will keep my saddle from tilting back
when I bounce around on it?

Congrats on the bike! Glad you're giving it a chance to show its "burly"
side.

You can try torque-ing down the saddle clamp bolt to prevent it from
shifting.

But, any two-bolt seatpost will clamp more securely than the Nitto S65
Crystal Fellow (or clone) you're using.
The Nitto S83 or lugged S84 are the Riv-supplied solutions. I also see
two-bolt posts in silver from Ritchey, Deda, and others.
I like the clamp head on Thomson posts, but they only come in straight (not
enough setback with a Brooks) or angled (proper setback, weird looks).
Soma's Zero post has the same problem (lack of setback).

[RBW] Re: MTBubbe Update

2018-05-03 Thread George Rosselle
I have boscomoose bars on my old Fat Chance that I keep in FL, and I find
them good for road rides and doubletrack, but not so good for singletrack,
particularly when it is a tight twisty trail, like many around Atlanta. You
will be happier with something that does not come back as far, maybe a bit
more straight. And you will find the 2.35 tire will be better on the front,
it will give you a bit of cush. Get a 2.1 for the back, Notubes was blowing
out their 2.1 for $20, if you can set it up tubless you will be happy on
the trail and the street. A little slip on the back on a trail is not bad,
and tubeless will give you more cush and better traction if you run it with
lower psi.

Where do you access the new trail? I also live in the Atlanta area, and
enjoy trying new trails. I am out on the east side, near Harbins and
Tribble Mill and Fort Yargo trails.

2018-05-03 Thread John G.
Looking forward to the catalog. I will be interested to see the differences
between the MIT Homer and Sam--is down to cantis vs calipers? STA and
chainstays? Clearance?

I have to say that my two most recent non-Riv frames were Made in Taiwan,
and they really are tremendously well done. I've heard some folks say that
MIT forks are overbuilt, but IMHO that's not really a problem unless you're
running 23-25mm tires.

[RBW] Re: Made in Taiwan AHH?

2018-05-03 Thread Lester Lammers
Different is what Rivendell has always been and evolution is not a bad
thing.I found Riv when I was looking for a fatter tire all around bike. I
bought a Bleriot frame. Bulls eye. I regret selling it. I am really excited
about my forthcoming MIT 53cm Atlantis. I have a 1987, I believe, Panasonic
MC7500 HT MTB with 26" tires. It has 17" chainstays and there is some heel
strike with rear bags. Ain't gonna be there with the new Atlantis. As a
parting thought I saw some Garmin pedals for $999 or so. I think they
alert of an impending heart attack.:-) Is the price of a MIT frame
reasonable? Like yeah.

I have a recent 55cm Cheviot. The long chainstays make for a Buick Electra
225 ride. A bit sluggish for me at the tender age of 66 but I'll keep it
and put it back in service after I can't get my leg over the Atlantis. You
can't stop the clock.

Thanks Grant!

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for aerobic base training heart rate monitors?

2018-05-03 Thread Deacon Patrick
Tom, aerobic base training is simply going at a slow enough pace that you
aren’t going anaerobic. Doing this over time increases efficiency, so that with
the same effort, based on heart rate, you are going faster/farther. Phil
Maffetone is the lad who put it altogether. He has a slew of books out. Pick
the one aimed at your lifestyle, they’re otherwise basically the same from what
I can tell.
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_2_9?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=phil+maffetone+books&sprefix=phil+maff%2Caps%2C197&crid=1KYLAX2WME91R

Lum, my HRM is feel. I calibrated my feel early on with a heart rate app on my
phone. Since then, I monitor my effort by feel. Basically, if I can chant the
rosary to myself aloud, I’m good. The more I have to breath heavily doing that,
the more anaerobic I am. Simple and easy and free.
