Re: Noodles uncomfortable? Was: [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?

2016-10-30 Thread Rod Holland
I have Noodles on 3 bikes: a 700c LHT, a 26" LHT, and Rawland Nordavinden.
The bars on the Nordavinden are relatively narrow (42cm?), which seems to
work very well with the low-trail (33mm) geometry of that bike: they are
absolutely comfortable over any distance I've managed so far. I have larger
Noodles (47cm?) on the two Surlys, with further differences: the 700c was
originally a complete-bike build, and I swapped the Noodles into the
existing stem at the existing position (level with the seat). The 26" LHT
was a custom build on a Trucker DeLuxe frameset, and there's a noticeable
drop between the seat and the bars on that bike. For either of the Surlys
with the wide Noodles, I can find comfortable hand positions for long
stretches of riding, but I can tell the difference between the three bikes
in terms of cockpit comfort. I find myself fantasizing about raising the
bars on the 26" LHT to seat level; I mull making a stem modification on the
700c LHT to bring the stem perhaps a cm closer to the seat. Thus far, I've
done neither of these things, and tell myself I have desirable
biomechanical diversity across the different bikes in the herd. So far, I'm
buying that, possibly because I'd rather spend the time riding than
wrenching... I've got another bike build queued up for the Winter months
(older Ebisu AP), and haven't made a decision about bars for that yet...
Might go with the same width Noodles as on the Rawland, might try the Maes
Parallel bars... We'll see.

Which tires do you have on it?.. Will it fit Compass Snoqualmie Pass (38mm,

believe)?

Also, would you mind measuring the distance from the back of the saddle to
the stem steerer? Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco v2 has landed!

2016-10-30 Thread Jeff Lesperance
The tires I have on it now are Compass Snoqualmie Pass, which are labeled
at 700x44, and though I haven't measured them yet, I suspect they're closer
to 40mm as installed on the narrow-ish Open Pro rims I have for now. So the
answer is they will fit Snoqualmie Pass and fenders, though there are a few
tight spots that I'm not concerned about, but if the tires stretch or I
swap to a wider rim, which I intend to do, I may have to reconsider the
fender solution. I've split fenders previously to get a bit more clearance
under brakes, so I may go that route if need be.

I do have some BG Rock n' Roads, and they're labeled as 700x43, and my
recollection is that's a true size, and I've previously tried to install
them on my Sam Hllborne with these exact fenders and they did not fit. As
this fork is supposedly a Hillborne fork, I'd expect they would not work.
However, I have successfully run Rock n' Roads with Woody fenders that are
split in fore and aft segments for better clearance, and they are not
curved at the outer edges, so they work with the Rock n' Roads if you're
the sort who likes to tempt fate by running knobby tires with fenders. If
you search for me in the list archives you'll find pictures of that setup
on my Hillborne.

Measurement from the center of the bolt on my stem to the back of the
Brooks B17n saddle I have installed on is ~30 1/8 inches - I have the
saddle as far back as its short rails and the stock/generic one-bolt
mid-setback seatpost that shipped with the Rocso.

I have a ride/build report forthcoming...

[RBW] Rosco Bubbe v2 ride report

2016-10-30 Thread Jeff Lesperance
After finalizing the build of my new Rosco yesterday, I was able to get out
for more than a ride around the block today - I got ~15 miles in cruising
around the neighborhood, through potholed downtown Silver Spring, through a
wooded parkway and on some unpaved bike trails.

First, build details:
Wheels: Parts bin Ultegra/Open Pro
Tires: Compass Snoqualmie Pass 700x44
Fenders: Cream Longboard
Cranks: Shimano Deore
FD/RD: Shimano
Stem: Nitto Tecnomic ~130mm
Handlebars: Nitto/Riv Choco Norm
Brakes: Silver
Seatpost: 26.8 stock (Kalloy?)
Saddle: Brooks B17n hand-carved
Shifters: Silver on Paul Thumbies
Racks: Nitto/Riv Hub Area Rack, Mark's Rack
Chain: nothing special, SRAM something, but to note, brand-new standard
chain needed a few extra links from surplus chain for me to feel it was a
decent length to run down the long chainstays and to route through the long
cage RD.

Everything came out of my parts bin except for the handlebar and tires, and
most had been installed on my since passed on Hilsen.

I've mentioned that I'm either a drop bar guy or otherwise stretched-out
riding position guy. This is my first pulled back bar bike since I carted
the kids around on a Surly Big Dummy that was fitted with Albatross bars
some years ago. I've flirted with mustache and Albastache bars since, and
I've never been able to get them to work for more than very short rides.
So, having a bike that pretty much requires this type of bar was a bit
concerning.

My initial short test ride had me feeling like the front end was squirrely,
but I think I just had the bars too low - I bumped 'em up a tiny bit and
that sensation went away.

I rambled through mixed suburban, urban, wooded parkway and off-road,
hard-packed gravel and clay trail, and I have to say the Rosco feels great.
I can cruise at a comfortable pace easily and pick up the pace and/or
charge up a hill either by standing and holding on to the hand grips or by
leaning forward and grasping the outer front segment of the Choco bars
where they begin to curve back - this is actually a very comfortable
position. When I came home I wrapped this forward segment of the bars with
some leftover leather bar tape I had as I think I'll spend a good bit of
time up there.

Rosco has the Rivendell magic feel to it. What is that? It's the feeling
that the bike goes where you want it, there's no fighting or disagreement,
no frustration. It's cruises easily and synchronizes with and rewards extra
effort when you want to pickup the pace. Here comes the blasphemy: I didn't
get that feeling from my Romulus or my Hilsen, as such they're no longer
with me, but I do get that feeling from my Hillborne. I guess interestingly
enough, from a sizing perspective, I'm technically on the small side for
the Hillborne and Rosco using Riv sizing guides - I'm in range, but the
bottom end of the range, whereas I was in the middle or high end of the
sizing range for the Hilsen and the Romulus. My Hillborne is a 60 and the
Rosco is a 55.5 though the TT is super long at 66cm, where the Hilsen was a
58cm and the Rom I think was a 57.

I'm not sure how I feel about taking a non-drop bar bike out for all day
rides, long distance or whatever, as I really love the multiple hand
positions I get from my Nitto Noodles, and, I'm not sure how much I'll like
sitting up a bit taller/straighter, though I guess the forward position on
the Choco bars can let me stretch out, but I may trade out the B17n for my
other favorite saddle, a Cambium C17 carved for the slightly wider sit bone
area.

What's next for Rosco? I'm going to commute on him this week, with my
commuting load settled in the hub area bags, vs. my standard
saddle-attached Carradice camper, so I'll get to test it out with more
weight on the front. I'll also probably put a Nitto rack on the back and
take it for an s24o on the C&O in a few weeks. I'm also going to get a more
appropriate set of wheels, with a generator for the front - probably will
run up to Gravel & Grind in Frederick and have James lace something up.

The Compass tires are great. They feel similar to the 700x38 Barlow Pass
tires I run on the Hillborne, and that similar feeling is amazing. If
you're not running the largest Compass tires your bike will handle, you're
really doing yourself a disservice.

Thanks, Shawn, for that detailed and very useful information. Good to know
that they are not delicate.

I'll wait until next year -- perhaps post Christmas sales? -- but for now
I've splurged more than I should have on other things.

But my nice cotton Ts, which serve as non-cycling base layers in winter
(under wool, of course) and as top layers in hot weather are fraying and
wearing thin after 10 years or so, and since I've found wool so useful
summer and winter for cycling tops, I thought that wool might be useful for
non-cycling tops as well. My brother seems to live in lightweight wool Ts.
(I've got a full wardrobe of ss and ls wool cycling jerseys, and wear them
on all but the hottest summer days.)

My new Riv-ish frame is going to sport Mafac RAIDs, with brazed posts on

Wow! Mavic recommends the Open Pro for tires 19 to 28mm in width.
You're really stretching the envelope by going up to 40mm.I guess
the question to ask now is, "What could possibly go wrong?" (No, seriously)

2016-10-30 Thread Jeff Lesperance
They feel fine on the road - I guess I'm running them at a slightly higher
psi than I usually run my Compass tires - not squirrelly or floppy taking
hard corners. Do you think it's far out of range of what mountain bikers
used to ride on? FWIW these Open Pros have been shod with 32's and 35's for
a few years with no issue and these Compass tires are measuring close to
40mm.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco v2 has landed!

2016-10-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Be serene, acushla. Open Pros are perfectly wide enough for 40 mm tires.
Breathe deeply in relief and gratitude.

I rode thousands of miles with 2" tires on much narrower rims -- 19 mm
outside to outside, with nary a fall or slip. I rode 65mm actual Big Apples
on 24 mm outside to outside rims, at sub 15 psi. Absolutely not a problem,
apart from the funny squirmy feel on pavement -- but then, I'd just pump
them to a hard 20/25, and all would be well.

[RBW] Fork crowns on Quickbeam & Simple One - Questions

2016-10-30 Thread iamkeith
Is anybody well versed or familiar with the crowns used on these two bikes?
Particularly regarding the differences between them, and their relative
tire clearances?

The recent Reader, #44, included a description of Riv's various, current
fork crowns (RC-02 through the new, Appaloosa-style RC-06) but it doesn't
really answer my question.

I have a first-run QB, the crown of which looks like the one at the
following link (and also matches my Rambouillet). But it isn't even shown
in the Reader article. Perhaps it's a RC-01? Or is it the RC-02, which is
listed as the Roadeo crown and therefore the narrowest possible option? :

original QB crown

Meanwhile, later QBs and, presumably S.O.s had crowns that looked like the
one at the following link. It's hard to tell from photos whether this is
an RC03 or an RC04, though I'm guessing the former. Both have the little
scroll detail with three dots above:

Later Quickbeam crown

My main question is whether or not the later QB/SO crowns had significantly
more clearance than the earlier ones. My reason for asking is because the
Rosco #5 is said to be built around a surplus Quickbeam / Simple One fork,
and I'm trying to figure out what that means in terms of real world tire
clearance. It is the later of the two above styles, and the bike's listed
as having a max tire clearance of 40mm (though I suspect that's a typo and
it really meant to say 44 or 45). But is this the conservative dimension
Riv is required to cite as a manufacturer, or does it jive with what QB/SO
owners have been able to do?

Though I'm at the upper end of the fit spectrum, #5 is the first Rosco
that's looked like it will fit me, but I'm trying to figure out if it's
something I'd use. My QB is the most comfortable bike I own, but I rarely
ride it precisely because it is limited to such narrow tires. If #5
doesn't improve on that significantly, then it's likely just too much
overlap and redundancy. #5 also shares the same, steepish 72 seat tube /
72.5 headtube angles with the QB (which I suppose is why they describe it
as "roadish"), has horizontal dropouts, and is bright green.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco v2 has landed!

2016-10-30 Thread Steve Palincsar
Not quite the answer I was in search of. I forget what the issue is,
exactly, but there's something to do with sidewalls that's a concern if
not outright hazard when you're so far beyond the design
recommendation. But, your answer has inspired me to consult the Great
Oracle Google, and here's what I found:

http://www.bikerumor.com/2016/08/12/tech-story-match-bicycle-tire-width-rim-width-best-results/

/"If the tire is too wide for a given rim, you get more tire roll due to
the larger casing size and higher aspect ratio of the tire, which
together create more leverage on the tire allowing the casing to
collapse and roll over the rim during hard cornering."

/

I imagine this is exacerbated by low tire pressures. It turns out that
the thing I was vaguely remembering as a problem is actually an artifact
of the exact opposite: "/The basics are that if you run a rim that is
too wide for a particular tire you have a lot more issues with tire and
rim damage, as the rim is much more likely to bottom out on lateral rock
impacts causing tire or rim damage."/

I rode thousands of miles with 2" tires on much narrower rims -- 19 mm

Apples on 24 mm outside to outside rims, at sub 15 psi. Absolutely not
a problem, apart from the funny squirmy feel on pavement -- but then,
I'd just pump them to a hard 20/25, and all would be well.

will fit Snoqualmie Pass and fenders, though there are a few
tight spots that I'm not concerned about, but if the tires
stretch or I swap to a wider rim, which I intend to do, I may
have to reconsider the fender solution. I've split fenders
previously to get a bit more clearance under brakes, so I may
go that route if need be.

Wow! Mavic recommends the Open Pro for tires 19 to 28mm in width.
You're really stretching the envelope by going up to 40mm.I
guess the question to ask now is, "What could possibly go wrong?"
(No, seriously)

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco v2 has landed!

2016-10-30 Thread Patrick Moore
You can add to your list of possible and theoretical problems when using
too wide a tire on too narrow a rim, that there is at some (not known to
me) point the theoretical danger that the overfat tire may overpower the
rim wall and break it. But at 20 psi, I don't think -- "think" -- that this
is a problem.

IIRC, Jan discussed this in BQ somewhere back when. Can others add to the
answer?

Interesting aside: I used the 50 mm (labeled) F Freds on 44 mm Sno Cat
rims; ok, not bad; they measured perhaps 52 and had a flattish profile.

I swapped the same tires to 35 mm Velocity Blunt SS's, and the tires (now
51 actual) had a much nicer, rounded profile that (at least in imagination)
cornered more nicely. Make of this what you will. Me, I make that 50 mm
tires play 'specially nice with 35 mm rims.

Back in the 80s, I ran ma-40s that Kieth Bontrager cut a rerolled down to 26"
rim diameter
I ran them on my mountain bike for 20 years and never had a problem with tires
coming off or the rims cracking.

I still have some of the Mavic MA-2s in that size and would not hesitate to
build them up and run RTP tires.

I'm sure there are theoretical reasons to avoid the skinny rim/fat tire combo
but in practice it doesn't concern me much.

YMMV

[RBW] Re: Fork crowns on Quickbeam & Simple One - Questions

2016-10-30 Thread iamkeith
Ha. Yeah, I knew that was yours, and wondered if you'd see it. You're one
of the few people I know who takes useful, informational, detail shots of
bikes, which are good for reference.

I'm guessing you're right about the clearance - though I'd still like to
know what the crown differences are. It's interesting that the crown I/you
have wasn't part of the lineup included in the Reader article at all. I'd
had high hopes that the Rosco project was going to finally yield the bike
I've been dreaming of, but I think I'm out of luck. Even if it wasn't for
tire size question, I think the frame size is a wee bit small. Such a cool
bike, though. If I was 5'-11" and lived in a city, I'd be all over it like
mayonnaise on bologna.
