I've used a mirror from HubBub cycles for at least ten years. Here is a
link to their latest version. It is a bit pricy, but worth every penny.

& this guy: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/tpp-10142.htm
I've been using the new PariMotos, which ride great, but I have gotten a
few flats, exclusively in wet weather, and would rather not worry about
changing a flat in the rain anymore.
Any info is much appreciated.

Terminal points are the Irvine train station and San Juan Capistrano
station. The route runs inland along Serrano Creek to Whiting Ranch, over
a ridgeline to O'Neill Park, the down Trabuco Creek to SJC:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7183179

We got going around 9:30AM, had lunch in Trabuco Cyn, and hustled down the
trail to catch trains around 2:30. It was the second round of beers and
the stop to weigh our bikes at the Path bike shop that caused us to cut it
close.

2015-04-12 Thread dougP
" Is this an area that would be fine for my hetres, or do i need something
more flat-resistant?"

It's mostly decently maintained dirt roads, but there are some rocky
portions. We had a variety of tires. David had some pretty serious
looking knobs, Ian was on Smart Sams, Robert was on Rock'n'Roads (I think);
I was on a Marathon Supreme & Marathon Plus combo (no good reason, just
what was around). This route isn't too demanding of tires, other than some
skill at rock avoidance. Come to think of it, we had no flats and no
mechanicals.

[RBW] Doug and Noel's Brilliant Route in Orange County, CA

2015-04-12 Thread James Warren

I finally got my collection together from this top-5-alltime ride yesterday.
Huge thank you to Doug and Noel for creating the route that I want to do again
soon:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/46035786@N07/16495335804/in/set-72157651913517411/

This ride had the ideal country dirt roads that I often dream about. And the
middle of the ride had a mexican restaurant stop with beer on a great patio in
a shady canyon with amazing people. In the second half of the ride, there was
lots of fun singletrack! And when we were done in San Juan Capistrano (riding
on appealing roads without car traffic almost up to the last pedal stroke) our
path took us right up to the train boarding point so that each of us could
either get home or back to our cars on Metrolink in under an hour (15 minutes
back to Irvine for me.) I don't know how you can have a more perfect day on the
bike.

We even weighed our bikes at a shop enroute. I have a feeling we were hoping
for high numbers. Mine came in at 44 lbs. or so. The lowest was Noel's at 33
lbs, and the greatest was 49.5 lbs. Curtis wins! All the bikes were loaded to
varying degrees. Curtis's riding made me a firmer believer in the downplaying
of bike weight.

Instead, copy the article title and use it for a Google search.
By going through Google, that will open the door for the WSJ piece, such

Re: [RBW] Coolest cycling cap?

2015-04-12 Thread tarik saleh
Thanks David and Jim,

I do really like all the randy jo ones, and I am selling some TSBC
ones right now, $34 shipped in the US, a light weight wool one and
a regular weight, preorders through 4/20. See:
http://tsaleh.blogspot.com/2015/03/new-tsbc-cap-time.html

I will probably have some extras when they come in, but if you are anything
other than medium, it is best to preorder. They come in your choice of 4
sizes.

I am also gonna do a few randi Jo brooks saddle covers with the TSbC logo
on the underneath part, contact me if interested.

The lightweight wool is very nice, but it is hard to beat the synthetic
ones when it is super hot. If I get my deal together I will do a run of
tsbc synthetic waltz caps in the future. I like the way those fit.

Thanks for sharing. I lived out there '74-'90. I wish I would of known

One of our club rides started at Santa Ana train station and we rode down
to Del Mar or San Diego and back then the rail road would let you put your
bike in the baggage car on the last train of the day for the return to the
train station.
What a fun ride for you all. What a great group! Enjoyed the pictures.

[RBW] Tough Eggs

2015-04-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
Had a great grocery run today (and about to get the literal fruits of my labor
with a blueberry shortcake! Yes, it’s grain free, and except for the fruit
close to carb free too. Don’t ask how. My wife and daughters work magic with
their baking.)!

Anyway, on the way home, I forgot two critical facts: I have eggs in my
panniers and there was significant, deep washboard on the road on the way up. I
remembered the washboard when it reminded me of its existence as I was flying
downhill with a great tail wind. I remembered the eggs as I was maximizing my
simultaneous use of breaks and build in Hunqapillar shock absorbers.

Eggs are tough. Only one broke, and went immediately into the mix so didn’t
even get wasted. Grin.

Patrick

Just saw this on CL. $75 for an older set of Velocity Twin Hollows in the

years ago. Would make a great second wheelset if I hadn't already bought a

[RBW] Good camera for on the bike

I never used to take photos when riding, but last year I started. I've used my

[RBW] Re: Good camera for on the bike

2015-04-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
My personal suggestion is persist with the simplicity of your iPhone,
unless you want to become a hobby photographer. Get a photography book.
Learn the principles of solid framing and what makes a good photo. The
photographer has much more to say about the photo than the equipment does.

I love the simplicity of my iPhone. Could I take better photos with more
effort and a dedicated DSLR? Absolutely. But the cost for doing so would be
a lot more time and energy and money I'd rather spend differently. All of
the photos on my Flickr photostream are iPhone. Use mittens in cold
weather. Easy on and off. I take photos down to -20˚F.

Panasonic LX7

Super fast 1.4 lens. Extra wide-angle (24mm in 35mm equiv). Leica optics w/
Panasonic electronics. Metal frame. Good battery life. Small package
(almost too small). Lacks an optical viewfinder which is the only thing I
would ask for. Lens is a bit big and protrudes out front a bit to be fully
pocketable. Has a detachable lens cover which makes one-hand photos a bit
tougher. Regularly goes on sale for $280-$300.

Patrick, you do EVERYTHING down to -20 degrees. I just find that I will rarely

When it gets cold enough (perhaps below zero?), I wear fingerless gloves
under my mittens. I found that for things needing dexterity, bare fingers
get it done better and faster and I'm back to moving again vs. gloves, so

[RBW] Seeking first-hand test-fit (& ride) impressions of the Clem, from other in-betweeners!

2015-04-12 Thread iamkeith
After seeing the formal sales flyer
,
I'm having renewed doubts about the Clem that I purchased fitting me. If
the included diagram is accurate, the quoted stand-over heights are
measured directly above or just in front of the bottom bracket, instead of
at the middle of the top tube where I'd assumed. This is the critical
determining dimension in my case, and it seems to suggest that the frame is
even taller than I expected. There's probably only so much that can be
gleaned from the opinions of strangers, but I'd like to hear as much as I
can, to try and figure out what I'm going to do. Whether I need to
abandon the project and sell my frame to someone else or try to switch to a
smaller frame, I'd rather figure it out now - while there could still be
options available, before I pay for shipping, and before I start
accumulating components in earnest.

I'd love to hear some first-hand impressions from those who also feel like
they fall squarely *between* sizes, who have had a chance to try both,
and their thoughts afterword. In my case, I'm most interested in
hearing from people who are between 6' and 6'-3" tall OR with a PBH of
roughly 87cm --- too tall for a 52 and too short for a 59 --- but it
wouldn't hurt to hear from others in the same dilemma, falling at other
break-points. It seems like we've heard from several people in the
6'-3" to 6'-6" range saying that the 59 is just right and, similarly,
others at 6'-0" confirming that the 52 is just right.

Wish I could get to RBW headquarters, but can't . Thanks for your efforts
though, if you can.

Talk with Keven or Grant at Rivendell. If you already have, trust what they
told you. I had similar concerns prior to getting my Hunqapillar because
what they sold me was bigger than the Hunqachart said. They were spot on.
Had I gone with the chart, I have no idea how things would go. When I got
my Quickbeam I got it sized on the big side just the same, so I have no
comparison.

no personal experience about that size, however, here is a word of possible
reassurement. we bought the 45cm prototype clem (maybe sizes have changed
slightly) for my fiance who has a pbh of 72-73. at the time of purchase,
the website said standover was 71, and they were right. in looking at the
pdf, it now seems to suggest that standover on that size now is 74. its
possible that the geometry changed slightly, but i sort of doubt it. again,
we just have the prototype, but if the geometry didn't change, then the
standover is definitely a few cm lower than that which is listed on the
pdf... i might verify with riv, but don't second guess too hard. the clem
is a super cool bike.

[RBW] Good camera for on the bike

2015-04-12 Thread Philip Williamson
I concur with both David and Patrick. Keep going with the iPhone, and if the
pull of a camera camera is really strong, the Lumix is dynamite.

There are gloves with capacitative (capacitive?) magic thread in the fingertips
for using a phone. I've seen Instructables for sewing your own into existing
gloves, too. Maybe sew a spot on the thumb of a mitten?

[RBW] Re: Good camera for on the bike

2015-04-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
I've tried the conductive fingered gloves. They are generally thin to the
point of being useless and either too loose (floppy and inexact) or too
tight (constrict blood flow, get cold fast). They seem designed for urban
use between buildings and transit, not use in extended exposure in the vast
wilds. That's why I just use fingerless gloves uner boiled wool mittens.

My biggest challenge with the iPhone is there have been times when it is
raining that I couldn't turn it on because moist fingers mess with
conductivity, so not many (any?) photos by me when I'm exposed in a
downpour.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Good camera for on the bike

2015-04-12 Thread Kieran J
If you do end up going the route of an actual camera, consider one with
tactile controls with buttons and dials, rather than a small camera with
everything buried in a screen-based menu system. It will help with
mitten-ed usage and impatience when composing a shot in bad weather. I
alternate between an iPhone and a Fuji X10, which is all metal, is a great
size and has a manual zoom AF lens and a few dials that make adjustments
easy in the cold and such.

Mine has taken a licking but it's still going strong. The Fuji stuff in
general is great - well made and easy to use. Same goes for the Olympus
OM-D line and the Lumix that was already mentioned.

2015-04-12 Thread Surlyprof
I've had success with a Canon Powershot S95. It takes great pictures and
it is very durable. It has been beat on pretty badly and it keeps on
going. I remember that I did a great deal of research on point and shoot
cameras before buying the S95. I found this site to do very thorough
reviews in the past (http://www.dpreview.com/). Looks like Canon's up to
an S120 now.(

The challenge I found is mounting it on handlebars so it's easy to aim
and easy to remove. I was wondering if anyone has found a successful
solution for that. Anyone?

Re: [RBW] Re: Good camera for on the bike

2015-04-12 Thread Patrick Moore
10-15 years ago or so, or back when digital cameras were still something
rather exotic instead of daily humdrum, there was a small contingent of
cycling photo enthusiasts who took pride in compiling albums of interesting
photos taken with cheap "pen" cameras, the kind that even back then
retailed for about $10. Even I, photographic klutz that I am, used a couple
of these for on-the-go and for-sale photos with passable results. Kent
Peterson, of eponymous blog fame and erstwhile fix-ist a l'outrance, was
one who did this.

Me, I carried an old Canon (at one time high end; taken in trade) for a
while, but found that my results with iPhone, serially 3 (s?g?), 4 (s?g?)
and, now (surfing just one step behind the fashion curve) 5 (s? g?) were no
worse, and that since I carried the phone anyway for various reasons,
including Cyclemeter, it was far more convenient simply to use it.

In fact, if anyone wants that Canon (Sure Shot? It was I was told a $600
camera back in the earlier aughts), he/she/undecided/it/both/neither is
welcome to it for postage. Chargers and (I think?) storage cards included.
Or will trade for a Roadeo.
