If you had told them about the upright bars, they would have loaded you on
a lumbering city bike with 900-g tires and 3-speed SA at best. When you
buy 10,000 widgets at a time, you can't afford for your customers to be
individualists - what, they think they're special? You want your bike to
be comfortable? Then you want a Comfort bike. We can sell you anything we
have here - just what you need, right?

The frame is fine, and the components are all in fine working order

mile mark.

I suggest: Just Ride.then Just Wipe Down, 5 minutes is all that takes.

Note: the wipe-down process is simplified if you have fenders on the bike.

[RBW] Re: ISO: 6 cm or 7 cm Nitto or GB stem

2014-02-03 Thread Elisabeth Sherwood
Hi Michael,

You may want to consider the Nitto Dynamic (I'm assuming that's their
"normal" road stem). It comes in a 6cm extension. It has a short quill --
145mm -- which may be what you're looking for. From the minimum insertion
point, you've got 78mm to the top of the stem.

(I've found that, on smaller bikes (i.e., with relatively short head
tubes), the Technomic just puts the bars too high even if it's inserted as
far as possible. [And, is it my imagination, or did Technomic quills get
even _longer_ over the last ten years?])

[RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike

2014-02-03 Thread Elisabeth Sherwood
If you don't mind the lack of lugs, a mid-90s Trek 850 is a great bike. I'm
sure there are other chromoly frames from that era that would work equally
well. As others have said, watch for the long top tube, though. You'll most
certainly need to replace the stem with something shorter in any case.

Re: [RBW] Stranded in a sea of salt.

2014-02-03 Thread Tim Gavin
I've been stranded in Iowa; it hasn't been above freezing (not even the
mid-day high temp) since the 11th of Jan. You better believe I went riding
that day! Even with studded tires, I'm not gonna bike commute 8 miles when
it's dark and below 0 F in the mornings.

I don't ride in the winter without fenders. My Riv has SKS longboards, and
my Schwinn KOM has P65's. They keep me clean and the bike reasonably so.

Re: [RBW] Stranded in a sea of salt.

2014-02-03 Thread Matthew J
I can deal with the cold here in Chicago. With reasonable attention, I am
sure my bikes can deal with the salt. The thing is, I have no garage. No
way I am going to track salt into my apartment. So since all this snow and
salt started hitting the streets of Chicago, my riding has been confined to
the Divvy bikes (Chicago's version of the better known New York Citi bike
rental program. Actually kind of fun to ride up to around 15 miles).

Hi Lesli , in our family we have have been very satisfied with old Trek
Singletracks, please see pictures; the red one is a 16.5" and the black one
is a 18", both are used for daily use as well as loaded touring on/offroad

Re: [RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike

2014-02-03 Thread Anne Paulson
The ECR is a 29+ bike with 31" diameter wheels. I recommend against an
ECR for a short person. I can't suggest a 29+ for someone who normally
rides a 48 to 50 cm bike.

I'm waiting for my own 29+ bike, a Surly Krampus. I worked with Cycle
Monkey for a while on fitting and finally chose the smallest Krampus
size, and I'm 5'8". I don't think someone who is much shorter than I
am will fit on a 29+ bike; those wheels are huge.

Hi. I've been informed that the only B17 with copper rivets is the B17
Special but that also has brass rails which this saddle does not have. So
to be clear this is a regular B17 with brown colored rivets of unknown
material.

The B.17 Champion Special has been available with chrome plated rails,
black painted rails and copper plated rails. None that I'm aware of
have ever had brass rails. The regular B.17 has small steel rivets; I
don't think I've ever seen one where the rivets were brown. All I've
ever seen (and I've seen many standard B.17s over the years) were
silver. However, the standard has small rivets, the Special large
ones. There's no confusing one for the other, they're immediately
identifiable at a glance.

I meant copper plated rails. You can see what I have here

Definitely brown (small, non-hammered B17 standard sized) rivets but also
black painted chromoly rails.

Also, saddle is now claimed.

[RBW] Re: Cotton and Wool Winter Army Gear

2014-02-03 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Bob:

I haven't really given it a foul-weather test, but I believe this is more
wind than water proof (designed for cold Swedish winters)... The cotton
feels like a fairly tight weave, which I believe might fare better at
repelling water in a light rain than wool... but I wouldn't wear it out in
a steady rain, and certainly not without a wool under layer.

[RBW] Re: Cotton and Wool Winter Army Gear

2014-02-03 Thread Deacon Patrick
Bob,

A canvas shell works best at 20˚F or colder, the idea being highly
breathable to allow vaporization from exertion while being windproof and
shedding snow easily. If it's wet from the outside, so it the canvas.
That's why I love Ventile, as it accomplishes both, so temp does not matter.

With abandon,
Patrick

As mentioned, top tubes are what will limit your choices. Would a Hillborne
work, or is the TT too long?

If not, how about a Salsa Vaya? Smaller sizes have 26" wheels and fit 50mm
tires. Is the 50cm TT too long?
http://pathlesspedaled.com/2012/12/salsa-vaya-1000-mile-review-or-our-thoughts-on-salsa-vaya-vs-surly-lht/
Sound like real great bikes!

If you can find one, a used Salsa La Cruz in their 47cm size easily
converts to 650B: http://salsacycles.com/files/pages/LaCruz.pdf I've done
that and love it, but has a 53cm TT.

[RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike

2014-02-03 Thread Lesli Larson
Thanks so much for the trail bike suggestions to date. I'd love to invest
in the Atlantis or Bombadil and that may be the down the line plan. On
that front, in the smaller size range, is there really much of a difference
between those two models for trail use? I'm well equipped in the areas of
rando/go fast so I'm looking for something stout and beautiful.

I don't have room in my life for too many bikes so I'd like to look for
something interesting from the past as a trial bike. Love the idea of
maybe a vintage Trek. I do prefer a rigid front fork and of course
something lugged and steel. In the end, I'd rather have something vintage
than a new, non Riv bike by Surly.

Good point about the long top tube. I think those Trek Singletreks look
terrific.

Love this list for make/models to cruise via craigslist. I'm hoping that 48
cm vintage frames are not too scarce.

[RBW] Re: Wool, Ventile, and Quicksnow Non-Intentional Experiment

2014-02-03 Thread Deacon Patrick
Winter goes brutal and deadly fast. I am thankful you and everyone else is
fine. The paradoxes that come from snow being a great insulator are
amazing, and lake slush is a great example.

I don't have personal experience with falling in slush in my ventile (or
anything else). Colorado has very few lakes able to produce such an effect,
and none close to me. But intuiting from what I know and have experienced,
the primary difference between a Ventile jacket and your canvas anorak is
the sponge like absorption and pass through of water thought the surface of
the fabric. Water would still come through the hem and cuffs and neck of a
Ventile jacket if submerged, but not through the entire surface of the
jacket where submerged, so on the whole your upper body would remain
significantly dryer. You would instinctively raise up your hands out the
the water anyway, so the main seepage point would be the waist hem. With
the cotton analogy lines anorak I have from Hilltrek, it actively draws
moisture from the inside to the outside to evaporate, so in such a
situation (without shelter close by) I would leave my anorak on while I
moved briskly yet with slow care (stupid things happen in the cold when you
move fast) to stay warm(er) and try and draw as much moisture out while I
built a fire and prepared shelter, survival style. I talked recently with
the owner of Empire Canvas to pick his brain on cold weather gear since he
isn't selling any this year. When I mentioned I'll be using my Ventile
jacket and was very excited and said there is no way he can beat that.

If I could get mittens and mukluks in Ventile, I would.

Keep on enjoy the wild wonders of winter! You have an excellent head on
your shoulders and that is the best piece of equipment you can have in the
wilds.

With abandon,
Patrick

I love my two Atlantises. But I don't think an Atlantis is ideal for a
trail bike, because it doesn't, quite, accept big tires. I have two

[RBW] WTB: White Industries 180 mm ENO Crank and/or SKF 113 mm BB

2014-02-03 Thread Mike On A Bike
Hi All,

I recently put a White Industries Eno crank on my Sam as a road double and
am very pleased with the crank. I also paired it with an SKF bottom bracket
and love the super-smooth, bomb-proof setup.

I would like to go with this setup on the QB that I am planning to have
refinished, but I don't want to break the bank with a brand new setup.
Anybody looking to get rid of a silver 180 mm Eno crank or (less likely) a
113 mm square taper SKF BB?

Not sure if it meets your needs but I've got a nice MB-4 in purple... Really
small... That need a new home.

My 5'5" wife can fit our slightly larger MB-5 so this smaller one is ready for
a new home. Cheap and has some 'Grant influence'. I hadn't listed it here
previously because I didn't think anyone would want to bother shipping on a
lower priced frame... but I would ship of anyone wanted it.

[RBW] Re: Looking for my first Rivendell

2014-02-03 Thread stonehog
Mike - I have a 54 Hunq and a 59 AHH (similar to the Sam). I'm 5'11" and
160 lbs for reference. I would definitely heed others advice here, and
also say that both bikes would likely be great. I find the two are
definitely different in feel, with the Hunq being stiffer, and only
slightly heavier. They both feel great, and with the same wheelset are
very close with the difference to me just in weight and stiffness. I like
a little flex and lightness, so...

If it were me knowing what I know now, I would start with a Hillborne (or
AHH) as it will do 99% of what you want. Probably 100% - they are both up
for touring. I do a mix of commuting, mountain riding, and randonneuring.
The AHH excels at all of these, and the Hunq excels at the mountain, and
would be 2nd to the AHH on the other two unless you carry 20 lbs on your
commute. I prefer a strong minimal bike for the application, and also
having a couple bikes that are set up for a specific application is a
luxury I choose to pay for.

Here are some stories and pics of both bikes with different setups if you
want to do some casual reading :)

Good luck, and enjoy whatever comes! Rivs are great bikes!!

Re: [RBW] Re: Looking for my first Rivendell

2014-02-03 Thread stonehog
Patrick - the Hunq is a great bike, no doubt, but I definitely feel that it
is slightly slower for me than my AHH. The paint makes it look fast, and
having the thought of the Mammoth makes me "feel" faster. I finally
eyeball measured this very inaccurately on my nightly commute home over the
past year or so. Many times, I thought I was faster on the Hunqa, but the
data don't lie! It was consistently slightly slower. Like 1-3 minutes out
of a 55 minute ride - damn - that's HUGE!!! ;) It was likely the beer or
the legs that made me thunk it was faster...

[RBW] Re: Project - Trail Bike

2014-02-03 Thread Tonester
There are a bunch of very nice lugged steel mountain bikes from the 80's.
I've got two early Stumpjumpers and they make great light-duty off road
bikes. And it's fairly easy to retrofit modern type shifters & stuff if
you're inclined. I just stay with period stuff (which there's plenty of)
and friction shift to my heart's content. You'll have the same challenges
I have, albeit at the other end of the size spectrum (6'3"). Miyata ridge
runners, peugeot orient express. I'd be quick to second the Bontrager
suggestion but most of those US type early bikes (Bontrager, Ritchey, etc)
command some fair coin these days.

Craigslist, yard sales, maybe ebay.

Good hunting!
