Tons more pictures in my Windsor

Polishing up the brake calipers is next.

Wish me luck today. San Francisco Randonneurs 100k. First lengthy ride of

[RBW] Re: WTB: Misc. parts for a San Marcos build

2014-01-11 Thread Ron Mc
At a local bolt supplier, the hardware for the cold-set fixture cost me
$2.60. I was able to borrow good digital calipers from work. If you try
to do this, one thing to remember - once you get to plastic - a measurable
permanent set - all additional spread will also be plastic (permanent) and
will just be arithmetic addition. So when you get there, every little
addition is permanent. So good calipers and many cycles of spread,
measure, relax measure, until you find the yield point.

good luck

Re: [RBW] Riv e-bike conversion?

2014-01-11 Thread Jeremy Till
The NuVinci is an internally geared hub with a continuously variable
transmission (CVT), not a power assist unit, although I can see how its
bulk might make one wonder if there was a motor inside.

I work in a bike shop that specializes in cargo bikes, and we have sold a
number of cargo bikes with electric assist, an application where it makes
tons of sense and can really go a long ways towards replacing the
capabilities of a car. BionX is by far the market leader in North America
right now, but this is a rapidly expanding market and I wouldn't be
suprised if that changes quickly, especially if heavyweights like Panasonic
or Bosch bring their products here. I've worked on and installed quite a
few BionX kits on cargo bikes, and it really is a pretty slick system,
readily adaptable to a wide range of bikes. The batteries can either be
mounted on the frame using the water bottle mounts or on a dedicated rear
rack. On a Riv, I might be tempted to use the rear rack battery, just so
there's no chance of damaging the frame if something happens to the
battery--water bottle mounts are often through the thinnest part of the
steel tubes. The best part about BionX, for me is that since the whole
system runs off a torque sensor in the rear hub, and adds an amount of
force proportional to your pedaling force, it still feels like riding a
bicycle...you just got stronger.

All that being said, BionX is still a pricy proposition, at ~$2000USD
depending on the kit, also considering the labor cost involved for the
install. And you're right, Cecily, I'm fairly certain BionX doesn't
produce a 650b wheel kit at the moment, but a good BionX dealer would be
able to re-lace the hub to a 650b rim for you. Considering the rising
popularity of 650b mountain bikes, I'm sure it's only a matter of time
before BionX offers a stock 650b option.

[RBW] Re: Dyno Hub

2014-01-11 Thread Montclair BobbyB
At first I misread your question as if you were mixing a 36 RIM with a 32
hub... NOW THAT would be something. Otherwise mixing wheels to me seems
normal. I have a touring bike with 40 on the rear and 36 on the front. I
guess the theory being the rear handles greater load (makes sense).

[RBW] Vending machine for cyclists

2014-01-11 Thread Lynne Fitz
that is so cool. I'd like to see them in remote locations, like, say, along
Lake Crescent in the Olympic National Park, or something like that. But as to
the other point, that touring w/650B tires is chancy - I have taken my bikes
(Riv Bleriot and Sweetpea) to faraway places, on brevets, and so on. I do
always carry a spare tire, because when that flat happens in the dark and rain,
it is challenging to find the wire or bit of glass. Better to fish it out in a
convenience store or fast food place later :-)

That said, in over 6 years of riding 650B bikes, I really don't get many flats,
and only once (within 2 miles of my house) had a tire-destroying event -
somehow the brake had gotten misaligned and rubbed through the sidewall. The
spare tire can get me to a place where I could order a replacement if I needed.
Or, in these modern times, order it from my cell phone for delivery to my next
destination :-)

As I am sure has been mentioned before, 26x1.25" tubes work perfectly.

Running the Soma tires at the moment - probably up to 3000 miles, no flats yet.
The Hutchinsons before that were pretty bombproof, and Jan said I ran the rear
tire down to a scarily thin amount of tread.

Been commuting with a used Michelin Axial Raid and Michelin Megamium on the
Riv, maybe one flat in a couple of years.

Re: [RBW] Sackville Medium Saddle Bag: Do They come in Black?

2014-01-11 Thread Tim Gavin
I've never heard of any plans to do black. Green, tan, and tweed are the
only colors I've seen.

I bought an Acorn Large Saddlebag in black (from a listmember), and it's
really nice. Its design is more like a Carradice than the Sackville
"trunk" design, but with "honey" colored leather vice Carradice's white
leather on its black bags. The Acorn is built with much higher quality than
a Carradice and is MUSA.
However, Acorn's "large" is still only 6 liters. Nowhere near the
Sackville Medium's 18 liters.

Re: [RBW] Re: Crazy Idea: Riv National Jamboree

2014-01-11 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I don't care if anybody calls it a national jamboree or whatever, but we have a
critical mass of Riv types in the Twin Cities or within a day's drive. Add in
Amtrak and a major airport served by bike-friendly transit, tons of bike shops,
terrific bike infrastructure, flattish terrain, and plenty of lodging options,
and we have a compelling case to have a country bike event here. I'm game for
setting something up, though I'll probably need some locals to step in to help
with leading rides, etc.

Just to put a note of finality in it, I'm gonna say that we'll have an event
the last weekend of September (26-28). If you come to the Twin Cities with a
country bike at that time, I'll show you a good time.

The itinerary is tentative, but let's plan on a reception Friday night followed
by two days of riding the local area. There will be a camping option, which may
be my backyard, but we'll see.

[RBW] Re: Regarding Seth Vidal

2014-01-11 Thread Michael Hechmer
Eunice, thank you for the update on how justice has moved in behalf of Seth.

I hope and pray that you have been able to find some release from the pain
of your loss. I have been through my own grief, but not to be compared to
yours. I have also spent 13 years as a chaplain at a major medical center
and have been honored to walk with many families through their losses.
Ultimately, justice, however we may think about it, offers little help in
moving through grief. Grief is about letting go of what is gone,
developing a relationship with the memory, and developing a new
relationship with life. I hope and pray you can celebrate the good times
and joy you had with Seth, and find joy in your life now..

I have also spent 23 years supporting men in prison - leading workshops on
nonviolence at a maximum security youth facility, and teaching meditation
at a jail. Most of the men I have met have been people of color who
suffered from addiction. They needed to be in treatment, not punishment.
Forgiveness is a lot like grief because it requires letting go of the past
and the desire to change or avenge the past. I hope and pray that you not
be stuck in the past but are able to forgive, let go, and live,

I also hope and pray you are able to find and receive the support you need
now.

Blessings,
Michael

You gotta love a guy who takes charge & nails a date for a party / rally /
whatever. And he's a Rivendell & Surly dealer. Add to that he's a quirky
character & what more could you want in a host?

I've toured the area in both summer & fall, and those dates are about as
solid as you can get to miss both bug season & snow season. As long as the
dates don't conflict, both the Bay Area & Twin Cities are do-able.
Remember, travel broadens the mind.

[RBW] Re: new to me Al Franken Bike

2014-01-11 Thread eflayer
I lied. When I went on my first ride I felt too much pressure on my palms.
I wondered what to do. I exposed another centimeter of quill and tilted the
grips up a couple more degrees. Also raise the seat a tad and moved it back
a tad too. I think the grip area comes back a bit too far while the bar
feels like it is optimal fit position right now. When I put my hands on the
cork grips it feels as if my hands are too far back toward my butt. More
forward would allow for more balanced weight distribution. Then hand could
be comfy on the grips and on the fronts.

Makes me wonder about trimming an inch or so off the ends.

I hear the internal diameter that allows bar end to be installed only goes
into the bars so far, so may cut em an move to thumbies.

Re: [RBW] Regarding Seth Vidal

I've not known how to respond to Seth's accident and the pain that accompanies
it.
Michael's wise and poetic response is congruent with my feelings and far more
articulate than anything I might say.

Re: [RBW] Sackville Medium Saddle Bag: Do They come in Black?

2014-01-11 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
They originally came in black only. I have a black Medium and a black Large.
Some kind of difficulty with supplies of the black material led to the switch
to green.

I bought an Acorn Large Saddlebag in black (from a listmember), and it's really
nice. Its design is more like a Carradice than the Sackville "trunk" design,
but with "honey" colored leather vice Carradice's white leather on its black
bags. The Acorn is built with much higher quality than a Carradice and is MUSA.
However, Acorn's "large" is still only 6 liters. Nowhere near the Sackville
Medium's 18 liters.

If nothing comes of it soon, I am making my Hillborne into a singlespeed

[RBW] Enjoying my Roadeo today

2014-01-11 Thread Don Compton
I let myself get really out of shape ( weak legs, weight gain ). I have
been riding my Hampsten Ti bike to try to compensate, to no avail. Well
today, I rode the Roadeo. It felt like I had returned home. I really
slacked off in 2013, rode easily and gained weight. Riding with with my
club mates, I just was trying to lessen the pain by riding my lighter Ti
bike. Bottom line( hopefully) I will lose a few pounds and be riding the
Roadeo with no fear in the hills.

[RBW] Re: Riv e-bike conversion?

2014-01-11 Thread Joe Bernard
I can see cyclists having qualms about e-bikes operated with a throttle
like a motorcycle, but the pedal-assist variety is very nice. I recently
picked up a no-name (read, Chinese) electric-assist folder off Craigslist
just to see what it's all about, and I love it. I live at the top of a
monster hill, and there are days I just don't want to end a ride on that
thing under my own (meager) power. The electric makes it possible to still
get a decent ride in, but on an artificially flattened terrain.

One option you may want to look at is a Hilltopper replacement front wheel
if you have a 700 or 26-inch-wheel Riv. It's a relatively low cost (and
power) fully reversible application
http://www.electric-bike-kit.com/hill-topper.aspx. It does exactly what the
name implies: A little boost over the hill.

[RBW] Fun on today's wet Brevet

2014-01-11 Thread BSWP
I rode with the SF Randonneurs today, the 117k brevet from Golden Gate
Bridge to Point Reyes Station, and back. Same route as I did with them last
June, but so much cooler this time, which - no surprise? - made the hills
seem quite a bit easier. RBW was well represented, with two Sam Hillbornes,
my LongLow, and a beautiful Saluki with centerpulls. Maybe one or two more
Rivs, but a quite swarm of steel-framed bikes on the ride. Was it raining,
or just drenching fog? In any case, my wool layers top to bottom kept me
warm, if a bit sweaty wet, and the rain was not such a problem.

[RBW] Riv e-bike conversion?

2014-01-11 Thread Jonathan Shinefeld
Hi Cecily. I was recently diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis and needed help to
continue commuting daily to work. So, I converted my Surly LHT to a Bionx
pedalelec system. I also ride a Riv / Kellogg Rambouillet and specially chose
the LHT for the conversion because the Bionx system adds 18 pounds between
battery, wheel / motor and controller and the Surly frame seemed more
appropriate. Adding that load to the Rambouillet just seemed wrong. This
conversion experiment has been 100% successful and I am totally satisfied. I
ride the light and lively Rambouillet for day riding when I'm up to it. Sort of
the best of both worlds. So, in some list serves e bikes are anathema - so
what. I see no difference between lowering gears, raising the bars or adding e
assist. The best bike is the one you like to ride, yes?

[RBW] Re: 13 shots for 13...2013 that is...and maybe a few more...

2014-01-11 Thread shawn m.
This is my favorite thread of the year! Everyone's photos are a real
inspiration to me; I always want to take more pictures when I'm out on the
bike, but I'm terrible at actually getting it done. My goal this year is to
get better at that (taking better photos would be nice, too!). As far as
riding goes, 2013 was a good year for me despite spinal neurosurgery in
June (success!). I made several short trips around Puget Sound, Southwest
Washington, and Portland, ranging from 2-4 days. I made four trips to
Portland with my bike, including a 2 week stint to attend the professional
mechanics course at United Bike Institute. Portland is an easy place to
love when it comes to bikes... I finished out the year with an urban
downhill alley cat that was great fun. I enjoyed being the crazy 'old' guy
on the Rivendell! Here's my set:

I don't post very often, but I really value this group and appreciate all
of your contributions. Happy New Year, and good riding in 2014!

[RBW] Visit to RBW HQ and the Hatchet Shop

2014-01-11 Thread Eric Norris
Monsieur Blériot and I went out for a little ride from Suisun City to Walnut
Creek today—a chance for Msr. B to visit Rivendell HQ for the first time.

The ride ended up being about 25 miles longer than planned, primarily because I
trusted the not-very-smart GPS route-finding function of my Garmin 800 … and
partly because I blindly followed it while we went over hill and dale and
assiduously avoided the most direct and logical route.

See, the shortest way to Walnut Creek from Suisun City is to ride more or less
south, passing through Benicia, Martinez, and Pleasant Hill on the way. But
when I put the address for RBW into my Garmin and hit “navigate,” it apparently
decided that route wasn’t long enough. When we could have continued riding
south from Benicia toward Martinez, Garnin instead said, “Go West!” … and we
ended up on a long and hilly route out to Vallejo.

Somewhere out past Crockett, I finally wised up and stopped using the Garmin.
“I know,” I said to myself, “I’ll use Google Maps!” I had my iPhone with me, so
I again input RBW’s address and went merrily on my way. All was good … until
Google’s algorithms decided that, rather than continue on a nice, paved road, I
should be on an unpaved trail. I followed that—hiking up some of the hills—for
about a mile before I convinced myself that the trail was diverging farther and
farther into the wilderness and farther and farther away from where I wanted to
be. I never claim to be quick-thinking when on the bike, but eventually I catch
on.

Once I got back to pavement after the dirt sojourn (I was glad I had 42mm
tires!), the rest of the ride was pretty uneventful. I visited both RBW and the
Hatchet Shop, bought a reflective ankle bank to replace the one I lost a few
years ago, got a cool RBW pin and magnet for free, and rode home. Many
apologies to my very understanding wife for being home almost two hours later
than i had planned.

Here’s the route: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/428443841

[RBW] Visit to RBW HQ and the Hatchet Shop

2014-01-11 Thread Michael
Looks like you had some capital riding there!
Looks like a Bleri good time.

I use yahoo and google maps to find my routes.
I wouldn't trust GPS to direct me on a ride as GPS behaves wierd in a car, much
less in a high-cost situation like being on a bike.

Can you imagine going 25 miles off route during a brevet?

Shiver me skewers.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne- why the switch from cantilever/center pulls?

2014-01-11 Thread sameness
Pure guesswork, but I'd say

1) Sidepulls are less fiddly to set up and adjust for the average user

B) Riv had a big hand in Tektro's bringing long reach dual pivots to the
market, so they probably have something of a vested interest in specing
them far and wide

All pure conjecture, opinions of the author only, etc.

Re: [RBW] Sackville Medium Saddle Bag: Do They come in Black?

2014-01-11 Thread hsmitham
Tim,

I have a Carridice saddle bag and an Acorn rando bag and IMO I don't think
the Acorn is a higher quality than the Carridice. I'm very impressed with
my Carridice. And I'm not denigrating the Acorn quality it's also quite
good. I do agree that the Carridice Black with white straps doesn't look
*as* good as the Acorn in black with honey strap though If I wanted a large
black saddle bag I'd choose the Camper long flap in a heart beat. Again
just my two cents FWIW.
