[RBW] Re: FS: 1992 Bridgestone XO-3

2013-12-15 Thread Joe Bernard
Buyers please be aware that this is the TIGed lowest-end model that became
the XO-5 in 93/94. It's a 700c-wheeled bike which resembled the rash of
hybrids on the market at that time. It was my first Bridgestone and a good
one, but it bears little resemblance to the later lugged XO-3s, or any
other XO with 26-inch wheels. Just so's you know.

Not sure but I think it was $950, maybe as high as $1050. That frame

[RBW] Re: What deals they were!

2013-12-15 Thread Mojo
I want to add on to my minorly (I hope minorly) snarky remark about buying
a Surly LHT. I have four Rivendells and I agree all four were worth every
penny. I always wanted a Bridgestone XO-1 back in the early 90s, but never
bought one and was bummed when the company went down in the summer of 1994.
They even had a XO-1 sale that summer that I missed when out of country.

Anyway in 1995 I happily plunked down $900 if memory serves for an
AllRounder (received Jan 1996), paying extra for the chameleon paint job.
That bike has been ridden on commutes, tours, fast paced road rides, single
track dirt. It has been in 3 or 4 configurations; it has indeed been a
chameleon. This winter its getting a Rohloff hub! (after Christmas
apparently) http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/4601769640/ It has
some beausage, including a dent in the top tube while chasing an attractive
young lady pedaling ahead of me.

The second bike was a road standard in 2001, designed by Grant, built by
Curt Goodrich, painted by Joe Bell. It's still my main summer road ride, my
favorite road bike of all time.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/7439691084/in/photostream/

Then Rivendell just kept piling on: In 2006 (I think?) I could not resist
one of the first green Quickbeams. I used to love to ride fixed in the
winters in prep for the upcoming racing season. And the design of this Q
was just so cool with multiple gears at the hand ready (mine has 5 gears).
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/7832253824/

In 2009 a 62cm copper Legolas sat on the website for a few months. There
were two, then there was one when I bought yet another Rivendell. Its such
a fun ride, my mixed stuff mainly road but plenty of gravel roads
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/with/7832253824/ My most
expensive bike of all time with some blingy components. It has some
beausage too, so I no longer have to worry about the lovely paint.

All the while I thought of the Atlantis, but where did it fit into this
pile of overlapping bikes? Would it be a 700c version of the AllRounder? I
dream of long self-contained tours, but my reality is more S24O. When I saw
the LHT's geometry that was within a few mm of the Atlantis in my size and
for only $450, I pulled the trigger. I have ridden the LHT hard in all
kinds of conditions. For a load carrying rough-stuff bike, its great. And
it saved me from having nothing but Rivendells in the garage.

Good bikes all, well ridden, well loved. My son will enjoy them after I am
done. Maybe his kids will after him. I hope so.

1995 AllRounder $900

2006 Quickbeam $900
2009 Legolas $2000
...each a bargain. They are all worth more to me now than when they were

one thing to remember about customs is that their resale value is comparatively
lousy. a custom only has extra value to the original purchaser. jan will tell
you the most valuable rene herse bikes are standard models, not the customs.
maybe you can get a custom that is a copy of an atlantis for cheaper than a
real atlantis, but the real one will keep its value a lot better. if you are
never going to sell your bike, then that doesn't matter

[RBW] Re: What deals they were!

2013-12-15 Thread RJM
Well, my Sam Hillborne was 1 grand and that included shipping for the
frame, fork, headset, seatpost, and bottom bracket. I got it on one of the
member emails and jumped on it. I think it is a very inexpensive bike for
what I got and worth every penny. At 1500 bucks it would be a deal.

My Roadeo I got right before the price went up, so I paid 2 grand, plus an
extra 150 for custom paint. Looking at the market place and seeing Trek 5
series framesets going for $2200 bucks, 6 series going for $3500 bucks,
custom makers like Shamrock pricing their frames at $2250 and others right
around those kinds of prices, I just don't think the Roadeo is overpriced
at all. I think it is situated at or lower than market prices for similar
framesets. I mean, I am sure you can get someone to make you a frameset for
less than the Roadeo, I doubt it will ride as nice as the Roadeo though. I
think the Roadeo has always been a higher priced frameset in Rivs lineup,
so I don't really think you could have scored a sweet deal like buying the
Atlantis in 2007 or something.

I think many of Riv's frames are now being built in the US by Waterford,
which aint a cheap place to get a bike frame made. The price difference
from 2006 to now has much to do with having the bikes produced in the U.S.
compared to Japan...or Taiwan.

Rivs aren't cheap bikes, and I don't think they should be cheap bikes. When
someone compares a Rivendell like the Atlantis to a Surly LHT, I kind of
cringe. I owned the LHT for a little and had an Atlantis I stupidly sold
and the two bikes aren't really comparable, IMHO. I think the Atlantis
rode better, felt a little faster actually, and was a prettier bike than
the LHT. Of course surly isn't making bad bikes, but they
aren't making bikes that have the same quality as Rivendells. I think the
value of Riv frames is very high and honestly, I think the bikes will
retain their value in the long run. I would rather pony up to get a bike I
will keep for 20 years than spend that cash on a different bike like a
Madone that I will wind up replacing in 7 years or so. I voted with my
dollars already though. Clearly, I am a Riv fan.

Would really like a Hunqapillar or a custom mountain mixte though. Maybe
sometime later this year I will get the money together for something like
that.

[RBW] Wtt tech deluxe 110 for tech 100

2013-12-15 Thread JL
Hello rbw gang,

I have a 110mm technomic deluxe in good condition that is a little too long and
a little too low. I would really like to trade it for a standard technomic
stem at 100mm or even 90mm to get the bars up higher. A talluxe would be fine
too but I would rather have a 25.4 stem clamp than use a shim for my bars

Any takers?

In 1982 I bought my son his first racing bike, a lugged Columbus standard
gauge Bianchi, which we upgraded to campy NR. I think the whole thing
costs about $500. My daughter is still riding it, with the original group.
 In 1984 I bought a Trek 620, a Reynolds 531 sport touring bike, for $530.
It has dimensions and a ride that is hardly distinguishable from my Ram.
This year I got it powder coated, put S&S couplers on it, and 650b wheels
after no one showed any interest in buying it for $900 even when shod with
wheels and components comparable to a new AHH. I'm glad I kept it because
I love the ride and ease of transporting it out to SF when I visit my son.
Over the years I have learned that it pays to buy stuff for the long haul.
Not necessarily fru fru, but quality, like Paul's brakes and White hubs,
PW BB's. This stuff will outlast me and never need to be replaced. My
other hobby is woodworking and I have also learned that quality is often
the low cost long term strategy when buying tools. For Example, I have a
3HP, 220 volt General table saw that is years 33 old. So far I have had to
replace one washer! Meanwhile the price of this saw has more than tripled.

Re: [RBW] Re: What deals they were!

2013-12-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Let us all praise Rivendell road bikes ("road" -- dedicated spritely rides
for pavement).

Very late 1994 custom: $950.
April, 1999 Joe custom: ~$1,800
March, 2003 Curt custom: ~$2,300.

I could not afford a custom nowadays.

I like that so many Riv employee builds feature black rims, hubs and other

My usual finish preference runs staunchly silver, but I think I might be

Re: [RBW] Which bike gets the winter tires?

2013-12-15 Thread C.J. Filip
I ride a '95 Independent Fabrication mtb with studded tires during the
northern Idaho winters. The rear wheel has an WI ENO (eccentric) hub for
use as a single speed and I've found fixed winter riding to be exhilarating
and sobering all at the same time. In summer the tires get switched out
and the wheel flipped to the freewheel threaded side for dedicated mtb use.

When it snows the deep lugs of the tires are a necessity. Then the snow
gets packed or there's black ice, the studs are a necessity. I've been
riding the same tires for 4 years.

[RBW] Re: FS: 1992 Bridgestone XO-3

2013-12-15 Thread Shawn Granton
Hey, no bashing the 1992 XO-3! Yes, yes, it was the low end of the 92 XOs,
TIG welded (gasp!) and with 700C wheels (double gasp!) Yes, yes, it will
never be as cool as the 26" wheeled XOs. As for "resembling the rash of
hybrids", it clearly stated in the 92 catalog that it was "Better than your
average hybrid" and we all know that Grant can't/don't lie. Yes, yes, will
never command the great prices of an XO-1 or even 2, but I paid $180 for my
used one and it's been worth every penny. I just rode the heck out of mine
today. And it cleans up pretty nice.

All in love,
Shawn

[RBW] Rivendells BBH Opening party and overnight.

2013-12-15 Thread Manuel Acosta
More of a welcome back ride for good old riding buddy Tommy.

Glad to have him back feels like he never left.

Tommy and I were back to our old shenanigans by racing towards the ranger
station of Mt.Diablo to grab the campground pass before they closed. We get
there right on time watching the rangers were closing the gates to get the
last minute campground.
Already a good start.

We roll toward Rivendell BBH semi-early with the party already starting.
Chris was representing Portland by was there early chatting it up with
Jared who had the duty to watch bikes.

Pat rolled up making it four. Ely said he would make it but he was running
on Filipino time. So he join in right before we left. He was late finishing
up a rear back for that night's overnight.

Great seeing old friends and meeting new friends.
Makes me incredibly grateful and lucky to have met and ride with so many
folks just in the past year.

Cheese and pickles were there. I added my cupcakes which seemed like an
affront to the Paleo-spread. But the ladyfriend told me I had to bring them
to the Rivendell Shindig.

Lots of you-have-to-go-to-the-physical-store-front items. Nice wool beanies
and other nick-nacks including old fashion Hobby horses and yo-yos. The
real beauty of the BBH store was in the rear where beautiful hatchet wall
mount that really puts the whole shop together.

The raffle was a blast like true Rivendell Raffle tradition one of the
attendee's young child picked the winners.
To my dismay the other Acosta brother was picked to win one of the prizes,
a Hatchet!
Not bad for coming 5 minutes prior to the start of the raffle.

We head out with a huge group from downtown Walnut Creek. Sean, Will and
Mike leading the way to their own night time ride of Shell Ridge. We passed
the closed gates of Diablo and ride the rest of the ride up to the
campgrounds with only the Moon lightning our way to the top.

When we get to camp we get to business with the food.

What's on the menu? Gourmet Mac and Cheese with some nice aged cheddar and
smokey gouda with some spicy sausage with a hint of wood chips.

Despite the coldish weather we had it was quite warm at the top we woke up
a tad bit early to do some sunrise coffee at the top of Diablo. The descent
was lovely. Dirt, frost, sand, mud and dry creek crossings.
Food was We finished with some Pho.
Lovely time to spend an overnight.

Picture proves that hatchets always makes a party:

Now now, Shawn :) $180 is a fair price, and that's a nice bike. The '94
TIGed 700c XO-4 is pretty sweet, too, and quite rare. I've never seen one
other than new-at-the-dealer back in the day.

[RBW] 1983 Stumpjumper Price drop-$400 shipped to the lower 48

2013-12-15 Thread Peter Morgano
Needs to go before the move upstate, I hate to fleabay it since that is
giving money to the corporate schills god knows where so one last try here.
Thanks all

Again its a 1983, fully lugged with the biplane fork, 22 inch, I think the
biggest one they made that year. I bought it off a list member in perfect
condition, minus the usual collection of scrapes and installed a Rivved
out-cockpit with Cromo 55cm Bosco Bars, 130mm Technomic Deluxe stem. I
changed out the cables to all Jagwire Hyper. I also swapped out the old
wheelset for a set I had from a 1992MB2. So now its a 7 speed, just had to
snug the 130mm wheel into the 128mm dropouts. Full deerhead components
Brake pads are like new, all wires replaced. Slapped on some Fat Franks for
around town riding. Standover with the fat franks is about 85cm. TT is
58cm.
