I want to add on to my minorly (I hope minorly) snarky remark about buying 
a Surly LHT. I have four Rivendells and I agree all four were worth every 
penny. I always wanted a Bridgestone XO-1 back in the early 90s, but never 
bought one and was bummed when the company went down in the summer of 1994. 
They even had a XO-1 sale that summer that I missed when out of country. 
 
Anyway in 1995 I happily plunked down $900 if memory serves for an 
AllRounder (received Jan 1996), paying extra for the chameleon paint job. 
That bike has been ridden on commutes, tours, fast paced road rides, single 
track dirt. It has been in 3 or 4 configurations; it has indeed been a 
chameleon. This winter its getting a Rohloff hub!  (after Christmas

some beausage, including a dent in the top tube while chasing an attractive 
young lady pedaling ahead of me.
 
The second bike was a road standard in 2001, designed by Grant, built by 
Curt Goodrich, painted by Joe Bell. It's still my main summer road ride, my 
favorite road bike of all time.

Then Rivendell just kept piling on: In 2006 (I think?) I could not resist 
one of the first green Quickbeams. I used to love to ride fixed in the 
winters in prep for the upcoming racing season. And the design of this Q 
was just so cool with multiple gears at the hand ready (mine has 5 gears).

In 2009 a 62cm copper Legolas sat on the website for a few months. There 
were two, then there was one when I bought yet another Rivendell. Its such 
a fun ride, my mixed stuff mainly road but plenty of  gravel roads

expensive bike of all time with some blingy components. It has some 
beausage too, so I no longer have to worry about the lovely paint.
 
All the while I thought of the Atlantis, but where did it fit into this 
pile of overlapping bikes? Would it be a 700c version of the AllRounder? I 
dream of long self-contained tours, but my reality is more S24O. When I saw 
the LHT's geometry that was within a few mm of the Atlantis in my size and 
for only $450, I pulled the trigger. I have ridden the LHT hard in all 
kinds of conditions. For a load carrying rough-stuff bike, its great. And 
it saved me from having nothing but Rivendells in the garage.
 
Good bikes all, well ridden, well loved. My son will enjoy them after I am 
done. Maybe his kids will after him. I hope so.
