A woman on this list declared her intention a month or so ago to
install a Midge. I'd be interested in hearing her opinion of it, and
learning how she set it up.

Me, I am still of mixed minds. (Howzat for a weird metaphor.) On the
one hand, it is, both overall one of the better compromises for on-
and off-road; the hoods are better than those of the 46 cm Noodles
(which were too damn' wide) and the hooks, tho' even wider, are as
comfortable because so much nearer and shallower. Compared to 42 cm
Noodles, the Midge is as comfortable on the hoods (this is where, for
me, the Midge shines) but considerably less so in the hooks -- again,
width and, also, because you simply can't set up the hooks to be
parallel to the ground: they are far too shallow and short.

OTOH, the 42 Noodles were useless on anything except firm surfaces,
while the Midge is wide enough even at the hoods to offer considerable
leverage and, in the hooks, gives all the control you need.

My problems with the Midge are (1) the great width in the hooks and
 (2) how the slanted hooks make my very sensitive left palm suffer.
This last may be helped with even more added padding. As to the first,
I am wondering if I should lower the bar (currently ~2 cm above
saddle) a cm or two and use the hooks, not the hoods, as the cruising
position. But this means that, off road, the hooks will be hard to use
on steep drop-offs where you need maximum grip and braking.

Perhaps the solution is to have a separate off-road bike that I can
set up without any compromise for road riding ...

[RBW] Re: Midge, again

2013-03-07 Thread iamkeith
Matt, that is OUTSTANDING!

It's crazy to me how there are so many dirt drop and alt bars out
there, with new ones coming out seemingly all the time, and yet how
none of them seem to be able to get it "just right." I know this is
highly subjective and personal but, with the exception of "width"
which might depend on an individual rider's build, it doesn't seem
like you should have to compromise one obviously good feature to
accommodate another. Yet the options are always either: too narrow on
top to give you an upper hand position (old WTB and 3TTT, etc.), too
deep of a drop to the lower sections for hard-core off-road riding by
people without racer physique (Nitto, etc.), way more flare and width
than you actually need at the ends for ergonomics and wrist clearance
sake (Woodchipper, etc.), too angled at the bend to make the hoods
comfortable (Origin 8 Gary, etc.), too short in the extensions to give
you a full hand grip (Midge, etc), available only for oversize stem
clamps (Ragely Luxy, Soma Junebug, etc), unable to accommodate bar-end
shifters (new WTB "Mountain Road," etc.), etc., etc.

(Not to mention. If you're only going to offer a component in one
color, it should be polished SILVER, not black, duh.)

I think YOU may have almost created the perfect bar though. I'd love
to hear your impressions and some more photos, after you put some time
on them. On the other hand, I completely agree that the 48cm Noodles
actually are almost perfect as they are. The only reason I even keep
trying to find something else is because having different bars helps
me justify owning multiple, otherwise redundant bikes - a'la Sheldon
philosophy.

That is a great mod. Without bar-end shifters, Midges are too short for my
best comfort. With bar-end shifters in, they're fine. If I ran the zoo, I
would have designed them with an extra inch or so on each side, with
engraved markings for the owners to chop them shorter.

[RBW] Experience with Long-Finger Gloves

2013-03-07 Thread Eric Norris
I've been experimenting with gloves and hand comfort, and it seems like
unpadded gloves work better for me. For some reason, the padding in most gloves
seems to cause problems for my hands that I don't have when I'm not wearing
gloves.

In fact, when I rode the Death Valley event last weekend I was gloveless most
of the day and my hands and arms felt great.

Does anybody have experience with unpadded short-fingered gloves *or*
long-fingered gloves (like these:

Re: [RBW] Experience with Long-Finger Gloves

2013-03-07 Thread Jim Mather
I use long-fingered unpadded gloves when I mountain bike. The lack of
padding matches well with my Ergon grips. Generally I buy whatever is
on sale at Jenson or Cambria, so I've had Fox, Descente, and Giro.
Here are some inexpensive ones at Jenson currently:
http://www.jensonusa.com/Bicycle-Gloves/Giro-DND-Glove-12

I've looked but haven't found unpadded, short-fingered gloves, so if
you find any please post.

[RBW] Re: Experience with Long-Finger Gloves

2013-03-07 Thread William
Eric

My Joann Fabrics sells super stretchy knit gloves for $1 a pair. I have
them hidden everywhere possible amongst my bikes. I just grabbed the pair
out of the front bag on my commuter. Those are Red. The ones that live in
the handlebar bag on my brevet bike are navy blue. When I want a tiny bit
of warmth and no padding, they are terrific. I've used them on a 200k
before.

For the rain, I wear a size large blue nitrile glove over the top. That's
good for any amount of rain and down into the high 30s in my experience.
I'm strongly in favor of equipment that is super useful while being almost
weightless and practically free.

I think I did a flickr set on the topic when I started playing with them.
I can't drop a flickr link at the moment, but I think you know how to find
my flickr stream

My mileage varies. I think the old WTB bars are perfect, and the Midges are
quite good. I like the flare - that's the best feature of these bars. The
width on the tops is fine for me, but I don't ride on the tops. I don't
like Noodles, so I think that might be a watershed for people.

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Re: Midge, again

2013-03-07 Thread Philip Williamson
Are you going to remove flare from a Midge bar, or modify a Noodle for
offroad use? I think the original Cunningham offroad drops were custom-bent
Cinelli bars. I don't think I'd want an offroad drop that wasn't heat
treated, though. You might be able to heat treat your modified bars in the
oven ("How hard could it be?" Note: I'm an artist, not an engineer).

[RBW] FS: 64/66cm Orange Ram

2013-03-07 Thread Ryan Ray
I have the opportunity to pick up one of two really big, big dummies for a
great price. So, I'm selling my other pricey bike perfect for the rides I don't
have time for anymore.

This is exploratory a bit. I'm not sure i could part with it but if I can get
the right price I will. After that family bike post here the other day I went
from thinking about a big dummy to actually wanting to buy one to finding one
on CL and remember a list member in the area had one as well.

66 c to t
Orange

All parts less than 2 years old other than headset/bb/seat post.

Xt rapid rise
Big noodles
Tektro levers
Brand new tektro brakes, the new model
XD2 triple
Mks touring pedals
New 32mm pasela TGs
New sks p45s with a VO leather flap
105/open sport wheelset
All new cables/housing

I'm sure I'm forgetting some detail.

I would also be interested in a partial trade for a cheap skinny tire ok steel
road bike for the rare occasions I will get out when it's not raining. But not
more than a few hindered dollars. I need the rest of the cash for the big
dummy.

If you are interested please send me an offer.

[RBW] Re: Does shellaced tape feel crusty?

2013-03-07 Thread Salween
Riding in the hot and humid land of shellac where it's readily available in
all shades for about $1 for 12 ounces ready to apply, it's a no brainer for
me. I don't really notice it being sticky (maybe just used to it) except a
day or two after (re)application, and indeed a bit when it rains. Using it
over cork. Can see it being an acquired taste, but it sure is easier for me
to touch-up shellac than re-wrap. Wish it did not take me so long to learn
its wonders in this application.

Re: [RBW] Front Rack ideas

On Fri, Feb 22, 2013 at 1:07 PM, Edwin W wrote:

> Reading that review made me look at this Blackburn. Anybody used that with
> Riv mid forks?

Since I wrote that review/comparison (I didn't actually have all those
racks in my hand, just going on numbers), I should chime in. The
Blackburn MTF fits perfectly on 700c Surly Long Haul Truckers and
every single 1980s Cannondale touring bike I've tried it on. Three so
far. The mid-fork eyelets on the SH appear to be intended for a Nitto
Mini if the bike had cantilever brakes. I used to own a Rawland rSogn
that had two sets of mid-fork eyelets, high and low, and the MTF
didn't fit either of them, not by a long shot.

Blackburn includes p-clamps with the rack, but that still doesn't
guarantee it will sit level. Also, if the rack is mounted with
p-clamps and you put any significant weight on it, the rack will
wiggle. It's noticeable. My experience was that I could see it
moving and also feel it, almost like a very low frequency speed
wobble. I don't know that it was necessarily dangerous or bad, but it
set off my OCD enough that I went looking for a better solution.

This is it:
http://thetouringstore.com/TUBUS/Fit%20Solutions/FIT%20SOLUTIONS%20PAGE.htm
Item #4. The rack mounts on this kit sit pretty wide, but that
actually works out well for fitting the rack. First, attach the rack
at the lower fork drop-out eyelets. Next, assemble the fork mounting
kit around the fork legs and attach them to the rack. Everything
should be very, very loose. Rattly, even. Then use a toe-strap
around the rack and the fork crown to slowly pull the rack vertical.
When it's where you want it, tighten everything down and then remove
the strap. Attached like this, or to mid-fork eyelets that actually
fit it, the MTF has been a solid rack. I'm sure I've had at least the
rated maximum weight on it more than once.

Tom,

Wow, that is quite encouraging. Also thinking of 60mm Berthound's with the
wider tires, so your experience and the others leads us to think that we
won't be too limited with the V brake constraint. I was too thinking of
checking in with the folks in Chico about the Motolites.

The arm length differences got me thinking, I trust there's a standard
distance (range) for the studs to be placed from axel center depending on
rim size, wonder if we can make sure they place the studs to ensure we can
maximize the brake's tire clearance for 700c rims.

Thanks, Owen

Re: [RBW] Re: V-Brakes and wide 700c tires w/fenders

2013-03-07 Thread Salween
Jim,

Thanks for the info, others too! Seems like this V brake clearance thing is
a non-issue so long as I get the right brake.

The brake will be supplemental (stoker controlled) to the discs--just in
case on those long descents with gear. I'm new to the disc thing so the
extra insurance seemed prudent. Most of the time it won't even be on the
bike, but when we decide to venture into terrain we feel may warrant it,
just a 10-minuite add-on. We'll get a good taste straight away as we'll
collect the bike a few miles from RBW HQ, so its going to see a bit of Mt.
Diablo for a couple of weeks before it returns with us to Thailand.

Since you mentioned it, if you or others have any mechanical disc
suggestions beyond the Avid BB7 or Bengal caliper/Shimano Ice rotor combo,
would love to hear them.

[RBW] New AHH 56cm 650B Build

Just made the call and my new A Homer Hilsen frame is on its way. I would
appreciate some guidance on the build. I am looking to work with my local

What's the difference between the Sugino XD600 and the XD2? Rivendell
suggests using a 110mm bottom bracket with any of their bikes with the XD2
and information on the XD600 suggests a 113mm. Is the 113 suggestion a
generic or safer (more clearance) one? Suggestions? I like the idea of
using older derailleurs like Suntours or similar Shimanos for the aesthetic
but want to run the triple crank and the 8 speed cassette. Will that work?
I'm more than okay with friction shifting and might use some Suntour down
tube shifters. Thanks in advance for the help.

David,
Congrats on the 650B AHH!
I'll defer to the experts about the BB and cranks.
I'll chime in, though, on the 8 speed cassette and old derailers: I'm
running an 8 speed cassette with cool old Shimano Deer Head derailer. I was
skeptical, but my friend from LBS said to go for it and, much to my

Re: [RBW] Re: V-Brakes and wide 700c tires w/fenders

2013-03-07 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Whew! Optional stoker-controlled auxiliary brake seems like a decent idea.
The BB7, especially the most recent version, is as good as it gets for
mechanical discs. Hydraulic discs (I like Avid Code or Code R for
heavy-duty applications) are awesome, but no elegant drop bar option yet.

[RBW] Re: Experience with Long-Finger Gloves

2013-03-07 Thread Joe K
Another vote in favor of non-sports-specific hand wear...I use full
finger gloves. Any kind that seems warm enough, no special bumps or
pads.

In summer, I do like the plain summer gloves Riv sells -- just a small
amount of padding. I used to like heavily-padded ones, but I must
have changed my mind I guess.

[RBW] Re: New AHH 56cm 650B Build

2013-03-07 Thread Mike Schiller
some of us have used a 107 BB with the SD2 and it had just enough room. A
110 BBb should work with both.
As far as 8 speed cassettes, I've used everythng from 10 speed Campy to 7
Speed Suntour derailleurs and they all shifted fine in friction mode.

Re: [RBW] interview with Ritchey on steel, gravel, wide tires and "innovation"

2013-03-07 Thread Daniel

Yeah, I enjoyed that film.

This might be a difference in semantics, but I understood the bike he built
for John Finley Scott (RIP!) to be a Woodsie (with flat bars). And the
Woodsies weren't mountain bikes. Had they been mountain bikes, we wouldn't
credit the Repack Riders with inventing the mountain bike, right?

I can't find the link at the moment, but the NAHBS site made mention of
the Woodsie Ritchey built for JFS as a precursor to the mountain bike (i.e.
not a mountain bike).

Potatoe, puh-ta-toe...I'd love blast down Mt. Tam on one whatever it was.

[RBW] FS_56 Atlantis, F/F/HS

2013-03-07 Thread frank_a
 Hi All,
I'm offering a 56 Atlantis frameset for sale. It's an early one with
the nice pointy lugs. The frame is in nice condition with some paint
scratches here and there, no dents just normal stuff. Some paint loss
at the chainstay from a bit of chain suck but otherwise very, very
nice.
I've got a few too many Riv's at the house ...
Asking 1000.00 plus actual shipping (and insured for the purchase
price).
There's a set of photos which should tell the story. Feel free to ask
any questions and I'll be happy to answer them.
 Thanks,

The work shop that I mentioned previously is coming along. I decided to
enclose a car port unused since Katrina. Probably two weeks away from
moving in. I tried to post pictures but was told that the jpg were too

computer savvy to know what to do about that. If someone is, let me know
and I'll try to post them. I have had no problem sending the same pictures

2013-03-07 Thread Kellie Stapleton
yep long fingered glove, unpadded for mtn. biking. If it's on the cool side
I might even wear them on the road. If it's cold (under 40˚) I wear Pearl
Izumi lobster gloves. I usually always wear some kind of glove, and none of
them are padded. Short fingered, usually on the road.

In the event that I take a spill and have to "abandon" the bike, a glove is
preferred over palm skin as a road contact surface. The main reason I wear

[RBW] Noob question of the week: what's the deal with chain suck?

2013-03-07 Thread Tom Goodmann
So, my naive question this week is: why do so many frames bear the scars of
chain suck? I make no boasts about my own riding, none at all, in terms of
distance, longevity, or rigor. but I can't think of more than a couple of
times I've ever thrown a chain. What causes the chain suck?
Over-shifting? (missing a gear or two or three) Shifting hard on a climb?
Is this an issue that has gone away for those riding with indexed
shifting, and so more of an issue with friction-shifters? Really just
wondering. If this question is too dumb for words, you can reply off-line:

Re: [RBW] Noob question of the week: what's the deal with chain suck?

2013-03-07 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Not a dumb question at all. I just came across this:

http://fagan.co.za/Bikes/Csuck/

Haven't read it, but it's a Sheldon referral, so likely to be good. (I
plan to read it myself.)

The general reason is that the chain does not disengage from the
bottom of the inner chainring; thus the chain gets pulled up and
(don't know the reason for *this part*) and also moves inward and
jammed between ring and stay. But being pulled up on the bottom of the
inner ring is one of the general conditions.

[RBW] Ride around Victor CO, then long descent home

2013-03-07 Thread Deacon Patrick
We've had some warm days (in the 40's and 50's), though we're due up to a
foot of snow on Saturday (we dearly need it), so I took advantage and did a
grand ride, with a great 2 mile section of sloppy, slushy, semi-frozen mud
puddled fire road equivalent at the turn around point. Wondrous!

I love having a bike that can do that, then handle the pavement winding
descent at 45 mph, with equal aplomb. Delicious! All said, about 45 miles
and a good chunk of time on first gear.

[RBW] Re: Noob question of the week: what's the deal with chain suck?

2013-03-07 Thread dougP
Tom:

My experiences with chain suck have occurred when shifting between the
middle & inner chainring. When it happens, the chain is mostly on the
inner ring BUT some of it has gotten "sucked" between the middle ring &
chainstay, resulting in paint removal at the least & much tugging & cursing
at the worst. Jim has suggested specific conditions, and I concur with the
technique issue. Mine almost always happen when faced with an unexpected
need for granny over middle, such as rounding a corner & seeing an "oh
crap" grade change, and just flopping the shift lever & hoping for the
best. Wear, lubrication, maintenance, are also possible culprits but I'll
lay most of my experiences to simply being clumsy. Covers a lot of other
sins as well.

There was a recent thread discussing chain ring spacing that got me to
looking at my set-up & there is visually more space between my middle &
inner than middle & outer. I intend to pursue this question but getting
around to actually measuring & figuring out some spacers, etc., is a
project for "one of these days".

The quick fix is a bottle of touch up paint.

A friend of mine had a serious chain suck problem on a road bike that
turned out to be a bent tooth on the chain ring. She must have hit the
ring on a concrete step getting down into the basement.

Re: [RBW] Re: 40/24 double mod on Bombadil

2013-03-07 Thread René Sterental
I just got my Hunqapillar back from the painter last week, and today my LBS
installed the headset, BB and crankset. I decided to install the stock Riv
26/40, although may go down to 24 in the future.

The thing is, the Phil BB had to be shifted to the right all the way, with
the left side flush with the BB shell/frame in order for the 40 ring to
clear the chain stay. In fact, there is about 1mm between the sharp teeth
of the chainring and the chain stay. Do I need to up to a larger BB
spindle? I think I have a 111, so next size up is 113.

What do you guys think? Do I need more clearance between the ring and the
chain stay? Actually, the 26 is also very close to the chain stay. I used
to have a 24/36/46 before.

Thanks,

René

Yes. That's the joy of neurological vertigo. It's a wild amusement park
ride you can't get off. Sardonic grin. The proprioceptive system (the body
knowing where it is based on input from the feet, among other sources) is
amazing. If I were to wear regular shoes, I could not walk, run, or bike.
But in leather soled moccasins or barefoot -- my body knows where it is and
my brain has learned to give up trying to figure it out.

[RBW] Re: Does anyone have any experience with the Public bikes basket on a Nitto M-12 front rack?

2013-03-07 Thread Daniel M
I have rigged up a Public Basket to a Nitto front rack on my Boulder All-Road.
Public's spring-loaded bottom clamp mechanism does not give a particularly
secure mount in the first place, so I have always augmented it on other racks
with a pair of nylon straps. In the case of the Nitto front rack, the rack is
so narrow that the clamp is basically at the end of its travel, and it barely
contacts the front of the rack where it has begun to taper. However, with the
use of the two nylon straps (one front, one rear) it ends up being quite
secure. For a bike that I ride every day, I want a front basket to hold my
courier bag while I ride. When I lock up the bike I just grab the courier bag
and go. Nothing stays on the bike except the basket itself - I carry my tool
kit, extra layers, iPad, etc in the bag.

However, I LOVE being able to take the basket off in a matter of seconds and
mount a randonneur bag in its place for recreational rides where I don't need
to carry as much. Plus the Public basket is sized between the small and large
Walds sold by Rivendell, and is about perfect for carrying my courier bag.

I took photos but have no idea how to embed them. Sigh.

[RBW] FS: 61cm AHH F/F/HS/BB price drop

2013-03-07 Thread Michael Williams
Hey Group, Up for sale is a used 61cm AHH F/F/HS/BB. Its Toyo built, if
that means anything. Repainted Butterscotch. Its 'creamier' in life than
in the photos. definitely used, never abused. It has some paint chips
here an there that i covered with nail polish. Some chainsuck chips and a
little wear on the inside left chainstay from tire rub I guess. I
sometimes squeezed 42s, so that is my only guess. There is also some
shellac residue on the headtube and a little on the DT and TT. Headset is
FSA almost brand new, oldish BB but still is smooth.Asking $1000+
shipping, which is now way less than half of the newly priced AHHframes
which would be roughly $2500 including tax. thanks -Mike

[RBW] Cut Brooks

2013-03-07 Thread Brian Hanson
I had a couple Brooks B17s sitting dormant, and have wanted an Imperial for
a while, so have tools, tolerance for risk = homemade Imperial in green and
copper! Riv content - it's going back on a copper Hilsen soon after I get
some miles on a Selle Anatomica Titanico X...
