They're 32 Paselas. I'm a recreational rider, so I'm not "forced" to ride in the rain... and I will admit to wiping them down with some some citrus cleaner when they start to get dingy. I've had the same experience. I now ride with the handlebar about 1 to 2 centimeters below the saddle height. That business of raising the handlebar as high as you can get them doesn't work for me. [RBW] Roadeo finally ordered!
Well, I did it! I ordered a Roadeo frameset. 53cm Ram Orange with cream accents, threaded fork (going to use my Nitto lugged stem). When the custom raffle was going on, I bought a gift certificate just so I could get entered into the raffle. I didn't win, of course, so I am using the gift certificate on the Roadeo frame. This bike is going to be my club riding bike and faster solo ride bike and the set up is going to be more aggressive than my Sam Hillborne. I have some time to think about wheels/components and general setup which I am actually thankful for as I could use the time to get some money together. Brifters or barends?hmmm. Be sure to post photos and describe the ride. I rather suspect it will be a very good complement to the Sam, from my brief experience with a Sam. I am rethinking my earliest desire to build the Ram up as a gofast; it obviously fits more into the sports-touring category and so ought to be built up. Eventually, God willing, I'll have a Kojak wheelset and one with light 28 mm tires, tubs or clinchers. The first big ride for the year is the Fleche - the famous 24-hour non- stop randonneur team ride around Easter. We have a lovely course around the Olympic Peninsula, where we reach the Pacific Ocean around sunrise and then have breakfast at the historic Lake Quinault Lodge. Especially love the stem-mount-shifters. I have a set of the stem-mounts, waiting for which bike to try them on. It's pretty likely I will like them. I also really like the BLAST of flashback from every flash photo including Sackville products. The reflective material on there is BRIGHT and generously applied. There's a T-intersection on my commute, where I have no stop sign and the cross traffic does. Cars have a tendency to blow the sign, unless they can see you. The side reflectors of my Sackville front come in handy there. [RBW] New Sizing/Pricing
I've seen a few posts about people being bummed about the new sizing. How they aren't going to be able to fit on the new sized Sam's or Betty's. I was one of those people on the Betty. I wanted a 58 for myself "someday" and now that they are discontinued, running out, and about to go up in price, I finally went in to buy one. I thought I needed a 58 and that the new 55 would be too small. What I learned is that the 55 Betty that is coming is IDENTICAL to the 58 Betty. The only change is that the seat tube is 3cm shorter. Draw the 58 betty frameset on paper and the only two tubes you have to erase are the seat tube and the seat stays. Every other tube on the bike is exactly the same. So, now I have a choice between a 58 and a 55, knowing my position on the bike will be the same. I just need to decide if I want 3cm more seatpost showing on the 55, and allow shorter friends to ride it as a guest bike. I'm leaning towards the 58 anyway, just for looks, but I thought that if there were any listers handwringing over the new sizing, that there is reason to be optimistic that you might still fit on a new sized bike. I read Grant's post, and I think there's a red herring here - the damage to the wheel came not from continued pedaling, but from continued rotation of the wheel. They're simply not the same thing. Either something got into the spokes, ahead of the derailer and inside the chain, or something smashed the derailer into the spokes from the side. Either way, the derailer was yanked back, and snapped off the rear dropout, and some spokes on the drive side of the wheel were snapped. In any case, the damage was not done by continued *pedaling* - it was done by continued rotation of the wheel after something jammed up the works. The rider could have been simply coasting along. [RBW] FS: Restomod madness. Kinda Rivish, kinda Ebisu-ish. 60cm.
The details: Frame - 1960s Atala. From the parts it came with it was one of the top two models in the line-up. First, I had braze-ons added for Mafac Racers, dt shifter bosses, and some cable routing braze-ons. Josh Muir of Frances did the work. Then, a shot of orange powder coat. Build: Mafac Racer brakes - braze-on mounted Campagnolo Rally RD Simplex Super LJ FD Simpex retro-friction DT shifters (cut out model, circa 1980?) TA cranks + italian BB - modern versions, not vintage. Campy GS hubs laced to Super Champion Gentleman clinchers Cinelli stem Nitto / Jitensha flat bars Real CNC mountain bike brake levers from the 1990s Selle San Marco Regal Extras: New cork grips. My next step was going to be relacing the wheelset. I'd like a grand picked up for this in Oakland, or I can meet around the bay area. I'll venture a guess that slamming the saddle all of the way back on its rails is the culprit of your lower back pain. This approach may be messing with your hip angle. I think it's important to realize that any change can equal a really painful result. Quick and dramatic changes - such as going from 3-4 cm below to 6 above (not saying that was what happened here, just trying to make the point) - change the stresses on the body dramatically and suddenly. This can be especially problematic if you ride a fair amount already, because, even though uncomfortable, your body is used to a certain position. I know I'm much more sensitive to changes and switching between differently set up bikes when my regular mileage is higher. My experience has been that smaller, regular movements towards a desired position is much safer on the body. Backs and necks are funny things, and after pretty seriously tweaking mine playing high school football, I've always been careful with position changes. I am very lucky to have been blessed with the genetics of good flexibility. But, in my high mileage years, while also mostly working at a desk, I was definitely taking a "set" - rounding shoulders and back, while my head easily would look up (yeah, I'm a 1 - 3 cm below the bars kinda body/guy). I was lucky enough to connect with an excellent yoga instructor and after 3+ years, have really undone a lot of that collapsing tendency. She also has a strong core focus, and I was again slapped upside the head with the knowledge that a strong core (especially stomach muscles which have NO stress in most cycling) alleviates about 95% of any low back issues. I've had two similar experiences. First time a cable/wire sticking out of the ground from some previous construction snagged on the derailleur and yank me to a halt bending the hanger and destroying my derailleur. Second time not sure what happened but the derailleur again was yank into the wheel, breaking several spokes with serious hanger bendage. No dropout breakage but I can certainly see how it could happen. Both were on gravel but would certainly would fall in the JRA category. While as a customer, I do not expect that Rivendell will replace my frames whenever anything unfortunate happens to them, when I needed them to, for sizing issues, they volunteered to do it. For an individual, it might mean everything; for a shop, it will likely b the seed of more future business and referrals. While there are indeed people who will abuse this, on the long run the benefit for all will be much larger. For me, it sealed the deal. I don't support the LBS that is closest to me; I support the ones that give me the best service and go out of their way for me; they make me feel special and welcome. When they stop doing that due to management changes, policy changes or because the sales person or mechanic that did it goes elsewhere, I follow them to their new place of work unless they go out of town, even if I have to drive further. And going back to the video, while everyone I've ever interacted with at Rivendell has always been wonderful, I do agree that Keven is special. Very special. I was hoping the new 55cm Sam would be 650B since the original two smaller sizes were 650B, but I read it will be 700C. I'm guessing the top tube will be about 58cm as the 56 had a 59cm TT. Since Grant mentioned a new 650B tire I was hoping he would add another bike that fit's them as well. [RBW] Optimal tire pressure questions...
Since I'm a heavy guy, the spreadsheet that has been posted for all to determine the optimal tire pressure has been very usefull for me, particularly as all my bikes have different tire widths/sizes. However, last week I ran into a couple of issues with this chart that I'd like to see how everyone else has addressed: 1) Does tire size (650b, 700c, etc.) affect the optimal pressure for a give tire width? 2) If you are a very light person, for wider tires you get some ridiculous low number, like 7lbs. How do you determine the lowest pressure to use in these cases? 3) Can I extrapolate these values to tubeless MTB tires as well? Any extra feedback is welcome! To my eyeball, it seems like that bar you're using has a lot of reach. Maybe a shorter reach bar would be better? Frank Berto came up with the chart based on extrapolation, so the further you go toward the ends, the less reliable the values become. My bike and I together weigh about 200 pounds, and I run my 42 mm Grand Bois Hetres at 40-45 psi on most surfaces, but closer to 35 psi on rough gravel. The extremely supple Extra Leger model requires about 10% higher pressures, since the sidewalls are so flexible. Otherwise, the tire begins to wash out when cornering on the limit. In cyclocross, the rule with tubular tires (which don't suffer from pinch flats) used to be that you wanted to bottom out on the rim on the biggest bump that you hit every lap. If you didn't bottom out, your pressure was higher than optimal for traction, and if you bottomed out all the time, your pressure was obviously too low. I suspect they might have a little more to get rid of because they are moving to a larger warehouse next month. Despite the rush right at the beginning, there are still some decent items left over (i picked up some scratched mud flaps for a buck a piece last time), and they are also giving 20% off anything you buy that's in stock (see restrictions in the post). [RBW] 1st Ride Report
Peter suggest I make a post, so here it is. Technically, it has been a few rides. A little side story of how the bike came to be: I rarely frequent the forums but decided on a fine December day to browse and see all the happenings on the web. I stumbled upon Peter's post of a Bombadil for sale and quickly emailed him. I was reluctant at first knowing that I really didn't need another bike but with the proper push (from Andy 'Smitty' Schmidt and ManuelAcosta) I took the dive... and was it a good one. Within a week, the frame, fork and additional goodies arrived (+1 for Peter M.). Gracious that Andy allowed a landing pad for the box since my neighborhood isn't too ideal for pricey items to be stationed. From then on, part list was compiled with the help of Manny and Andy (again) and slowly it came together. Finally, I have had some time to take it for a spin and boy does my face hurt from smiling. It's nothing like the bikes I have ridden before. The frame is responsive, accelerates well and comfortable. Not to mention, it's easy on the eyes. I'd lower the bar to level with the saddle height (measure from the ground up). Your back angle seems higher than 45 degrees when on the hoods. Your saddle height and fore/aft position seems okay. You would have to be the judge however. I've moved my saddle from where it was before to forward by 1 cm and I noticed a difference. Try lowering the bars first and see what you experience. Just make sure you change the tilt of the saddle along with it. John got married and he and his wife (high school sweethearts reconnected!) moved to Oregon in early Nov to be near family. Losing John was gigantic, but I'm in contact with him daily and it's not all pleasure---he may work a few hours a week for us. Mark is the new GM, and we're all happy about that. It wasn't a case of -- having to promote from within. Mark knows the job, conferred with John about it...and has been doing great. Anyway, we ALL miss John so much, and he'd have been great in the video. His office would have stolen the show. Thank you all for liking it, and to whatever extent Rivendell Bicycle *works *, now you know why. Originally Jay and I talked about a ten-to-twelve minute videos, and that was the plan. And that was the budget, too. A few months later, after all the shooting (I think everything was one-take), Jay sent me a 29-minute vid (only the ultra-beginning, with me ridng down the trail, and then the typeover was added). Jay is a remarkable guy. He dives into things and seems to not know about learning curves the way the rest of us do. Jay was a great employee and friend. You can't know him without wanting to be more like him and feeling lucky. Super guy and he did a great job.
