Thanks, Dan. I gave this option some consideration last night.
Ultimately, my decision was to pursue the 1.5cm longer TT.

I hope that your bike will find a perfect match soon.

Same here. Use them on all my Riv bikes seatposts with no issues. I do put
a washer each side of the pitlock before installing. Yes, I do loose a
little paint, but I think it is worth it for piece of mind when I lock up.

[RBW] Re: Do Pitlocks scratch paint on your seat tube collar?

2013-01-10 Thread Matthew J
They are designed to work with a collar clamp. The pit side holder
(probably not an official term) has grooves in it. So it probably will rub
off some of the paint.

Re: [RBW] Do Pitlocks scratch paint on your seat tube collar?

2013-01-10 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Riv seatpost collars are counterbored on each end, one for the bolt head, and
the other for a hex nut, which is pretty and elegant and functional. The
pitlock ends do not fit into this counterbore. That is what I meant when I said
pitlock wasn't easily compatible with Riv seat collars. Sure, you can run any
bolt or, apparently, pitlock through that hole, and clamp down on the area
outside the counterbore, which is likely to scratch the paint. I wouldn't do
that, not so much because of the paint, but because it seems like a bad idea to
just smoosh down on the seat lug over that counterbore.

Yowza, that pic of a squished fork gave me a sad. I am glad you are ok. I
guess since you already shelled out for the couplers it would pay to have
it re-done. I know Bilenky will do a once color finish for a good price.
There are a few paints pretty close to what you had but again there are
just so many nice colors for a Rivendell. I am leaning towards Dark
Persimmon Metallic since mine is a pretty big bike. Something in my brain
tells me bigger bikes should be darker colors while small ones can be more
flamboyant, maybe all those years of BMX where it was cool to rock some
pink wheels with a turquoise seat, it was the 80s after all, haha.

Re: [RBW] Do Pitlocks scratch paint on your seat tube collar?

2013-01-10 Thread SteveD
I agree. I use pitlocks on both wheels on my Atlantis. But when I applied
the pitlock on the seat post, the seat post kept slipping. Yeah, I could've
clamped down harder on the pitlock, but the amount of pressure seemed a bit
much to make it work. Maybe I'm being overly cautious, but I stopped using
it on the seat post because I was worried that it might damage the bike.
Just my two cents.

Hey Riv listers. Here's a great resource for colors:
http://paintref.com/paintref/index.shtml. The site provides color codes,
samples, and sometimes pics, for a large number of automobile makes and

cool color range on 1970s Beetles and Westfalias, check it out. Caveat: May
make you more indecisive on color choice.

That looks great! It makes me wonder what happened to the other mystery bikes

[RBW] Re: Ride report: A week in northern Lao on my hillborne

2013-01-10 Thread Paul Y
A few post-ride thoughts:

Grant is truly wise!!!

1. I would do it with platforms and regular shoes next time. Time ATAC's
and mtb shoes were too uncomfortable within a context of five straight
8-hour days, and you wouldn't need to schlepp an extra pair of footwear.

2. Would not use a chamois for touring again. They are too hard to dry, and
didn't make a big comfort difference. I tried riding with a speedo under my
shorts, in a chamois, and commando (nothing dried!!). 150 km commando was
ok! A chamois just made laundry harder. I actually dumped mine on the trip.

3. Would just take 2 pairs of traveller zip-off trousers next time, one for
riding, one for dinner.

4. Probably ride in a t-shirt or a long sleeved shirt (sun protection) next
time. The racing jersey did nothing to help. Last day in a t-shirt was
possibly even more comfortable.

5. My rim tape was broken and I didn't realize until 2 tubes later. (the
valve hole was exposed and cutting the valves...I just thought I had
defective tubes). About 50 km from the next village (don't think one would
find a 700c tube anywhere in Lao anyway), I managed to make a 26"x1.95 tube
that Jeff was carrying work in my 700x45 wheel. It actually held up very,
very well. I also used a bit of broken tube (1" x 1") with a hole in the
center and put this around the new tube's valve to protect it. Scissors is
real important! Worked perfectly - learnt so much on this trip.

[RBW] WTB: Sugino XD triple 175 mm arms

2013-01-10 Thread gordo
Hey there,

Just wondering if anyone has a spare Sugino triple sitting around. I am
just about done with a project and trying to use all second-hand parts.
Looking for one with 175 mm arms and a 24-36-48 set up, although I'd be
okay with a 26 and/or 46 for the inner/outer.

Please message me offline (egordon2231(at)gmail.com) if you happen to have
anything.

Thanks so much and happy riding,

gordo

I like the bare metal look alot. Is that clear paint or clear powder over
the bare metal? Is there any color diference at the lugs? Can you see the
material used to connect the tubes to the lugs? I've seen bare metal fillet
brazed bikes and the color difference between the steel tubes and the
"gold" brazed areas looks pretty cool.

I also wonder if you've had any issues with rust? I'm in the Seems like I

[RBW] Re: 2013 Riding Plans anyone?

2013-01-10 Thread hsmitham
Hi I'm a almost a new Riv owner, sold my Cervelo R3 carbon bike so I could
purchase a A.A.H. It's been four months since I sold the bike and am
getting close to finally getting on my new Riv. My riding plans are to at
first try a commute to work which would be round trip 35 miles, perhaps do
this at least once per week, then ride for fitness two days during my work
week with a longish Saturday ride. I'm planning a light tour with my
Brother and Nephew from Salinas ( Maybe San Francisco) to SLO via Big Sur,
maybe a longer tour in the fall doing a circuit around San Diego county.
And trying to hook up with Southern California Riv riders. Taking delivery
of my new Riv is a great way to start 2013.

Most of the clear powder frames I've seen have looked pretty close to
those.

It is clear powder coat. There have been some reports (archives?) of
surface rust showing up under the powder coat.

Clear coat as used over paint would be much, much worse. I've seen a few
of those and they are much more porous and rust within a short period.

RE: [RBW] Color Question from an Indecisive Person

2013-01-10 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I had a clearcoat (Riv called it Raw Clear Powdercoat) over bare metal Bombadil
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/4249456177/in/set-72157624552118742/
, which has now been repainted
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/4815169169/in/set-72157624552118742/
, as it was showing some rust under the clear. But I would note two things:
(i) my bike was being stored within 30 feet of a salt water back bay, and you
can't get a much worse environment for a steel frame than that, regardless of
whether it's painted, color powdered or clearcoated; and (ii) the rust didn't
look bad, in fact it was pretty cool - I just got a little panicky, probably
because it was my first foray into the higher priced steel frames, and I didn't
want to take a risk. In retrospect, I wish I'd left it - it looked great.

RE: [RBW] Re: Color Question from an Indecisive Person

2013-01-10 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Peter:

I had two frames painted by Bruce, both for less than $200, and both came out
great. One was a 1985 MB-2 (sort of Riv content?), here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/6708095501/in/set-72157628383880621
The other was an early '80s (I think) Nishiki mixte frameset that he repainted
(along with an old Simplex chainguard and a set of VO Zeppelin fenders) for a
Christmas gift for my daughter-in-law, in Candy Apple Red, here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/7161292749/in/set-72157627582881347/
and here, with the chainguard:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/7346233742/in/set-72157627582881347/
. Total cost for two framesets, a set of fenders and the chainguard (with
cream inset on the guard and a cream headtube on the mixte) was around $450.
And everything looked great - almost (but not!) too good to be true.

I looked into PC, it seems like alot is in the prep, which you unfortunately
cannot really see unless you are watching the guy and know what you are looking
at, alot of acid baths and undercoatings that go unmentioned usually. I think
the epoxy primers most paint shops use nowadays are superior at blocking
moisture from getting to the raw steel and are therefore a bit more forgiving
than an ok powder coat. Plus it seems like the cost of PC has gone up
everywhere. Bruce quoted me less thann $200 for the whole job which is what my
local guy was gonna charge me to powder coat. Shame sometimes I dont own a car
since I am gonna have to ship it 2 1/2 hours away to NJ, but with the cost of
gas to get there and back maybe coming out even in the end.

Thomas,

Yeah Bruce seems like a straight shooter who does pretty good work. I only
wish I had a car to drive it out there rather than wasting money with UPS
for shipping and risking having them screw it up. All of my friends are
hippy liberals who own either fixies or cargo bikes so no help there, haha.
I guess while I scare up a box I can obsesses over what color exactly that
I want... I will post when the bike comes back, I am sure I will be happy
whatever it is once I am riding it again.

2013-01-10 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I've always felt that if a person needs a super tall stem jacked to the
minimum insert line, then s/he would do well to ride a larger frame size.
If a larger frame size results in no standover and/or an unpleasant
stretched-out feeling, then maybe a different bike brand/model is needed.

My frame looks a lot like the close-ups that are on Cyclofiend's website.
There is some patina, but I'm not concerned about it. If it looks like it's
getting too bad, I'll get the frame re-finished, probably with clear again.

So can't fit R&R + fenders? Could you fit 50mm Big Apples?

I agree that in most cases, a commuter should have fenders. I'm lucky to
have more than one bike and put fenders, albeit cheapy plastic Crud

lucky thing about living in my area is there are months when it doesn't

RE: [RBW] Re: Mystery Bike mods

2013-01-10 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
B:

No, I was referring to the Bruce G Rock 'n' Road tires that were formerly on
the Mystery Bike (not to a BG Rock 'n' Road ). I loved them, but
couldn't make fenders work with them on that bike (at least not without
substantial fiddling, and even then no guarantees), so I put the somewhat
skinnier (around 36mm mounted) Delta Cruisers on the bike, along with
Longboards. Everything plays well together now, and the ride remains very
cushy ("stately", as Cyclofiend suggests), but still surprisingly zippy and
responsive.

RE: [RBW] Mystery Bike mods

2013-01-10 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I might have been able to fit R + R plus fenders, but not Longboards, and wider
fenders don't play well with the Tektro R559 sidepulls that are on the bike. I
suspect you could get a fender wide enough to handle the R + R tires if you
replaced the sidepulls with some Paul Racers, and I actually gave it some
thought, but it would have required some additional work, and no guarantee it
would pan out, and anyway I like the way the brown Delta Cruisers look with the
Longboards, so I think I'll try this combination out for a while and see how it
goes. If it turns out I really miss more air under my wings (speaking
metaphorically), maybe I'll try the R + Rs (or some Duremes or Supremes - maybe
some Marvellettes?) under a set of Racers and some wider Honjos.

[RBW] Atlantis commute...

2013-01-10 Thread René Sterental
I started work this week and with my new 2013 goals, have started commuting
every other day to build up slowly. I commute from Palo Alto to San Jose
(California) and ride my bike from my house to Downtown Palo Alto where I
board the train to Downtown San Jose and then ride to work via the newly
paved Guadalupe River Trail. Currently it's about 15 minutes to ride from
my house (2.32 miles) and then 30 minutes on the GRT (5.2 miles) for a
total of aproximately 45 minutes each way.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/8368773624/

It's funny (actually sad) how out of shape one can get, but I feel pretty
tired at the end of the day when I've done this commute. Not dead tired,
but still feel it, particularly on my legs.

Last week while I was still on vacation and it wasn't raining, I started
riding my Atlantis with its new low trail fork after taking a long time to
rebuild it. The original Berthoud fenders I was using on this bike needed
modifications (front) due to the new fork and misalignment of the hole that
held it to the front rack. So, I decided to get a new set of fenders and
found a pair of smooth 50mm Honjo fenders that I decided to try instead of
the Berthouds. These fenders have no holes drilled at all, so it's going to
be a long day of installation to make sure they go in perfectly and I don't
mess up. I've had quite a bit of practice lately, so it's just a matter of
taking it easy and not rushing it.

The Atlantis with the new configuration is handling very nicely. To be able
to carry my laptop easily, I put back the Platrack and bag, but to carry
the extra clothes I need now that it's cold in the morning but not so cold
in the evening, I may add the medium Saddlesack to the rear with the R14
rack once the fenders are installed.

So far, with the front rack both unloaded and lightly loaded with clothes,
there isn't a hint of shimmy on the trail sections where I pick up speed
and would get it before. I put back the original CK headset that is
supposed to be shimmy prone just to make sure that any differences
experienced weren't due to the needle bearing headset. Still early to make
any solid claims, just feeling happy with the bike's handling.

The one thing I've noticed is how well the bike now wants to turn. Tight
turns at some speed that used to make me tense and where I had a hard time
keeping the turn tight now seem to happen effortlessly and almost in
response to the thought to turn. Again, no side by side comparisons and not
enough time riding the bike, but feeling happy about it.

Another thing I've felt, is that the bike is now a pleasure to ride with my
hands further inwards on the Bullmoose bars. I seem to recall reading
somewhere in BQ that low trail bikes favored narrower bars whereas high
trail bikes favored wider bars. I think I'll go back to trying a set of
Rando bars just to see how they feel now. My issues with drop bars have to
do with hand/neck pain due to the reach, but I may still give them a try to
see if anything has changed.

Apologies for the long post... it's a slow day at work!

René

Re: [RBW] Do Pitlocks scratch paint on your seat tube collar?

2013-01-10 Thread René Sterental
That is exactly what I'm planning to do at some point... Use the nut on one
side and the bolt head on the other side so the Pitlock applies its force
on those two elements. Haven't gotten around to do it, as I rarely leave
the bike locked. Based on my new 2013 goals of just riding more, the
candidate for this experiment will be the Betty, which is what I'm planning
to ride around town on errands.

I agree that in most cases, a commuter should have fenders. I'm lucky to have
more than one bike and put fenders, albeit cheapy plastic Crud fenders, on one
of my bikes to use when its wet outside. Otherwise, one lucky thing about
living in my area is there are months when it doesn't rain and fenders are

Re: [RBW] Do Pitlocks scratch paint on your seat tube collar?

2013-01-10 Thread Robert Harrison
I took a few quick pics of a Pitlock seat tube lock on my Hunq. I've got the
same on my Quickbeam. There may better way of putting this on, but it works and
I haven't lost my saddle yet. I also don't find it unattractive but, of
course, tastes vary so if you hate it…good enough. :-)

I love it. But I also have a question. Do those bottle cages do a good job with
the Klean Kanteens? I have a set of the bottles I almost never use because of
the rattling around. On long rides I do use them but cover them in a sock which
I wet down for that 'swamp cooler' effect.

[RBW] Re: Luxos B dynamo light user review

2013-01-10 Thread NickBull
Hi, Toshi,

The main place where the Cyo is less adequate than I'd like is on a 40mph
twisting mountainous descent in the dark. On the straight parts it is
fine. But for the curves, I need to use a helmet light so that I can look
"around" the corner to see where the road is going.

I had hoped that the wider beam of the Luxos would help with this, but
based on your review it sounds like the wider beam is not bright enough to
be all that useful in these circumstances. Do you think that's correct?

Also, I don't understand what you mean by point 2 below. I have my Cyo
mounted with one of the Velo Orange brackets that is bolted to the side of
my front rack. The bracket is angled down and slightly forward and swoops
underneath the Cyo. From the photos I've seen of the Luxos, I can't see
why it wouldn't attach the same way as the Cyo. I can see that because the
Luxos is wider at the bottom, I might need to bend the bracket so that it
sticks out further from the rack.

Thanks for any comments,

Nick

Re: [RBW] Re: Luxos B dynamo light user review

2013-01-10 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Hi Nick,

There is no doubt that you can ride much faster with the Luxos and get
much better illumination in contrast with the Cyo. However, I believe
it would be less than adequate on a 40 mph descent because although
the road may be illuminated, the hotspot will be off the road, and I
would not be able to see hazards adequately. On the other hand, it is
much better than going blind, which is what would happen with the Cyo.
If you know the road is in good shape, then you could be ok...

The Luxos is not only bigger than the Cyo up and down but also front
to back. If you mount the included bracket downwards, the back of the
Luxos hits the mount and you cannot rotate the light high enough to
orient the beam properly. Perhaps the mounting point could have been
moved up on the bracket, but I didn't try. Also, as you mention,
perhaps if the mount is bent, then the rear of the light might be able
to orient up enough to mount properly. Maybe the Velo Orange mount
would be fine...

Toshi

A few times with motorcycle stuff (back when I rode) we'd have

Everyone would bring their bikes and work on them together. We should do
that with harlequin wraps! I'll volunteer my garage if Brian will
 demonstrate the mysterious technique. :)

[RBW] Re: Do Pitlocks scratch paint on your seat tube collar?

2013-01-10 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
No, they've got a little security pin thing in the middle. Not quite as
much of a "unique key" as a pitlock, but definitely not something in the
average tool box.
