I'm curious about the shorter shoes that come with the new 720's.
Does anyone know if they clear the fork arms/seat stays ?

They do clear on my Simpleone. It is just about time to replace them, any

On another note, it was cold and wet here in Fort Collins yesterday, and got to
wear my WollyWarm Sargent sweater all day, what a great sweater!

Are you using the stock rings on the crankset? If you decide to go the
derailerless route I'd make sure you were using singlespeed specific rings
(which you should be able to get in both 32t and 42t) or old rings from the
era before there were ramps and pins and "profiled" teeth. Having uniformly
tall teeth and none of the little shift aids might just be enough to prevent
the chain unshipping for your type of riding.

Re: [RBW] Re: Samuel P Taylor & Wet and wild Point Reyes Mini Trip. Ride Report and Photos

2011-10-09 Thread René Sterental
Joe,

Your explanation is very logical, at least for motorcycles where the machine
itself is quite heavy. I'm just wondering if for a light bicycle, where the
rider weight is so much higher, placing the load closer to the wheels
actually achieves the same purpose. I'll have to try it next time, but it's
how the touring loading has evolved over time and I assume it's for a good
reason.

I'm no expert, so just speculating...

It probably has something to do with polar moment of inertia. Back in the

all of the weight - including the gas tank - as low as possible, and
discovered they were hard to turn. It turned out the bike had a "middle"
that the rider on top, and the wheels below, moved around. By putting most
of the bike down around the wheels, the rider was forcing what amounted to
much heavier wheels to the right as he was leaning left. In the next design,
they centralized the mass in the handlebar/gas tank/seat plane, with the
rider as the lighter "top", and the wheels as the lighter "bottom".

Having most of the mass in the middle - around seat height - made for better
handling because the heaviest parts were "neutral". We think the wheels stay
in a stationary position, while the rest of the bike/rider leans from that
axis, but it's not true. As you lean into a corner, the wheels drift the
opposite way as a counterbalance. Therefore, loading the bags closer to the
rider's seat means that mass stays put while the extremities of rider and
wheels pivot around it. Make sense?

And yet, 1x7s and 1x9s are known to throw the chain. Some bikes do it
so often owners have claimed their bikes are possessed by evil spirits.
Here, for example http://www.foldsoc.co.uk/mchaink.html is an article
about a chain keeper devised to prevent AM-7 and AM-8 Alex Moulton
bicycles from thowing chains. Trust me, if it didn't happen nobody
would bother with devising such things!

Hi, not being a Riv owner I don't post to this list much, but I do

snow while winter camping. The only place I have found online that
carries the multifuel kit is outdoorgb.com in the UK. I'd be
interested if you or anyone on list would know where it or the Optimus

I guess supplying the wrong alloy or the wrong temper are the same
problem in my book. You can run into this same issue when purchasing
(as some insurance companies permit) non-factory steel service parts
for auto crash repair. There is a big supply base in China for these
parts, but they either don't know, or don't care about the
manufacturers specifications. If it's magnetic, sinks in water and
rusts, it's steel.and that's good enough.

Re: [RBW] Re: Samuel P Taylor & Wet and wild Point Reyes Mini Trip. Ride Report and Photos

2011-10-09 Thread Kelly Sleeper
Theres numbers then there is experience. I don't know the numbers. I can tell
you that small weights in the 20 ish pound range on the upper racks are not
that big a deal in "most" cases. I can say from experience that the lower
rider on the front handles better than on top. However I can also say that
I've toured many miles with loads high and hand no difficulty. I was running
panniers on an old man mountain that did fine. But that was 40ish pounds on
the front alone.

So my belief is .. that if you are going trekking with large amounts of weight
top and bottom the low riders and such are great and help... or large panniers
that hang from a top hanging rack with most weight in the bottom. Since there
is other weight on top as well this off sets and creates a better ride. That
is what I've experienced. I also have no problems with a case of soda in the
front basket .. but I do notice that the same weight in low riders / panniers
handles better. (tack on in my opinion) (for my bikes) (in Missouri on
Saturdays with 3.5 mph winds) Don't try this with full moon.

Do some load testing for yourself ... see the differences.. they are there and
most cases minimal. (on sunny days when no one is watching)

[RBW] Yom Kippur and friction shifting

2011-10-09 Thread Jay
Don't know how much anyone outside of Israel is aware of this, but the
holiest day of the Jewish year is a bicycle paradise here in the holy
land. Almost no one drives and the kids (and me) take to the street,
including major highways. You can ride all day and see maybe 10 cars
but thousands of bikes wherever you look. The kids look forward to it
all year, which is pretty funny since it is traditionally quite a
serious holiday being the day of atonement and all.

I always take my son on a long ride and all you hear is the whirr of
bicycle wheels.

Riv content, I took advantage of the opportunity to try the friction
option on my bar ends. I'm an instant convert.
Why didn't I do that earlier?

Jay

You're in the Bay Area, aren't you? If you want to pick it up, you can
have it for $40.

thanks,

Considering how notoriously awful Israeli drivers are, I'd relish this
opportunity. Still, I don't thinking riding thru Bnei Brak on Yom

[RBW] bombadil fork crown hole

2011-10-09 Thread ted
The rear facing hole in the fork crown on my Bombadil is recessed a
bit like a brake mount, but its smaller.
When I put a Nitto Mini-Front rack on my SimpleOne I used the recessed
allen bolt from a side pull break.
That doesn't work with the Bombadil. But the the back face of the
crown where the hole is isn't flat like the front either.
Do any of you know why the recess on the back face of the Bombadil
fork crown is there?

Thanks,
Ted

[RBW] Re: Samuel P Taylor & Wet and wild Point Reyes Mini Trip. Ride Report and Photos

2011-10-09 Thread Ryan J
Thanks for the replies everybody, you made my decision easier. I will
probably go with the saddlesack over the panniers because of the trunk-like
storage vs. the split storage of panniers. I have some time to decide for
sure though because they are both out of stock at the moment.

[RBW] Re: So Torn, Cannot Decide

2011-10-09 Thread Jeff H

I spent quite a bit of time deciding between models, the original
objective was a single bike to handle my varied style of riding, urban
to exploration.
Lots of research, looking at photos on the internet, 3 trips to RWBHQ,
reading the discussions on line etc. I narrowed it down to Atlantis,
Hillborne or Hunqapillar for
utility .. A H H for beauty.
A few more calls to RWB and I am now in possession of a 54
Hunqapillar. I am more than satisfied with my decision. The Hunq is
now winterized with fenders and Schwalbe Marathon Supremes in an
actual 42 (I believe). When late spring comes around, I will remove
the fenders and go to a larger knobbier off road tire. The Hunq is a
very versatile unit.

The head tube is not too short, I am running 48 Noodle drops with a
100 Dirt drop stem...it will adjust as high as you'd care to go. I
added brake interrupters and of course bar ends ( been using them for
over 40 years) Still messing with pedals, now on my third style in
less than 2 weeks.

If I were to choose just one bike (again), it would still be the
Hunqapillar, it will do it all. Were I doing less off road, I would
get the Atlantis... If I were doing less off road and going to carry
less, I'd get the AHH.
A major advantage of the Hunqapillar, aside from ultimate versatility,
is the lower frame price which allows some funds for the "add-ons"

Many thanks to everyone at Rivendell for their fine advise and service
and many thanks to all who ( unknowingly ) contributed to my decision
via postings on the discussion groups and contribution of images on
the internet.

Best of luck with your decision not a bad idea to try to get a
cheap flight to the Bay Area and spend some time at RBWHQ.

[RBW] New to list, introduction

2011-10-09 Thread BSWP
I don't know how I missed this group for so long, but here's a belated
introduction. I ride a 65cm "Long Low," which was built by hand back
in '98 or '99, a Joe Stark frame. It's set up with half-step + granny
gearing, six speeds at the back. Great fun on long rides and in the
hills, and for short grocery runs, too. My PBH is about 94, and I have
long arms... this frame fits perfectly. I've had the moustache bars
since new, and might soon experiment with a pair of Albies, just to
see what the difference feels like.

http://diesel.smugmug.com/Shiny-Things/Rivendell-LongLow

My work commute has changed, and I'm now looking to add a "fewer"
speed bike, if I can find something that fits, probably a used
Quickbeam.

[RBW] Re: bombadil fork crown hole

2011-10-09 Thread grant
The crown is the same as we use on lots of other forks, some of which
have sidepulls...thats why the recess. It is easy to fill in with
right-sized washers or spacers, and it ought to be easy to mount a
rack. We do it a lot, and since the crowns come out of the same molds,
it's unlikely that your hole would be too small for anything...
You could use a flat washer and a hex nut.

Hey Andrew, I think I have the 61cm version of your bike! :-) Joe S built

really unique. I've never seen one like that and love it!
