[RBW] Re: What would Taubes put in a Boxy (or Candy Bar) Bag for a long ride

2011-08-20 Thread charlie
Loved your story in the Riv Reader Scott..I use the now out of
production banana bag but also a Carradice for colder weather. I find
myself doing something similar when commuting, I just fill my water
bottles and don't take anything but my lunch to work (a modest piece
of some kind of protein and a big salad) Usually one piece of fruit on
the way home but since my diet change often not even that. I just
don't get hungry as much now and can usually ride around 2 hours
without doing anything different food wise whereas previously I would
just eat back all the calories I had just burned while riding.

RE: [RBW] WTB: NIGEL SMYTHE 'BIG LOAFER'

2011-08-20 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I have one in very good shape. It's the canvas version. Hadn't thought about
selling so haven't thought about pricing. It was on an Atlantis for about 200
miles. I like saddlebags better. When I took it off the bike I cleaned it up
(there wasn't much cleaning to be done); it looks almost new. No stains. Do
you have an idea of what you thought one should go for?

I'm hoping that somebody has a Nigel Smythe 'Big Loafer' which isn't getting
the attention that such a beautiful bag deserves!

Not to worry, it will be going to a good home and will be taken on numerous
outings. It will enjoy picnics, trips to the park, rides along the lakefront,
etc., and will never have a dull moment.

Please contact me asap if you have a suitable candidate for adoption.

Man, have fun on that! IMHO the premier amateur bike event in the States.
As for tires, I don't think you could ever go wrong with Hetres. That's my
armchair recommendation :-)

Re: [RBW] Tires for D2R2? Hetre, Fatty Rumpkin, or Col de la Vie?

2011-08-20 Thread Aaron Thomas
I dunno, man. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I think the Hetres
are nice but vastly overrated. Probably can't go wrong using them, but all
the others you mention would be just as good.

If I were doing that ride (I wish I were!), I'd be on 700c in the form of
Jack Brown greens or cyclocross tires in the 32-35mm range, such as the
Challenge Grifo XS.

Whatever you choose, please post some pics of the ride!

[RBW] Re: What would Taubes put in a Boxy (or Candy Bar) Bag for a long ride

2011-08-20 Thread charlie
Yea Philip, I know the example wasn't the best and it is funny now
that I think about it but Scott impresses me with his resolve and the
thing at least for me is, I believe Scott eats a ton of veggies (I
rarely did before now) and in spite of the focus on meat and fat in
the Paleo/ Atkins blah, blah etc. way, the common factor is (or should
be) vegetables in large quantities which many people do not eat enough
of when they follow the above 'diets'. I believe veggies, fruits, nuts
and berries were the original food (but that's a philosophical side
issue) but I've always felt the best after a modest piece of protein
and a huge salad coupled with an additional vegetable.
Desserts when we have them are berries these days or some sort of
fruit like apple slices or whatever. Like Grant, we make our own
treats but I admit to the occasional micro serving of ice cream and
like Scott, I loves my coffee and Phillip (Scott too) what can I say
about beer 'the nectar of the gods' and wineI love it too but
don't consume as much of either these days. Bicycling. I love to
ride and would do it just for the fun of it if there were no benefit.
It keeps me moving which is a biggie for me now that I'm nearing 53
and Philip.. it doesn't work as easily the older you get but YMMV.
This general topic (exercise/diet/health) is interesting and pertinent
to my life, glad it was posted !

[RBW] FS - 1984 Trek 620 56cm

2011-08-20 Thread Marty
Some of you may know I ran into a deal on a pair of 620s (his 'n hers) here
in Chicago. Just finished re-habbing "hers", and have decided to sell -
keeping "his" for now. (It's on the stand, and waiting for my next order
from Rivendell - planning an Albatross 2X7 set-up) ) 56C2C - both seat tube
and top tube. 32 1/4" standover. Everything was disassembled & re-lubed.
Boeshield added wherever possible. New cables, Pasela 27"x 1 1/4" tires,
Christophe straps and Newbaum's bar tape. (Note the black hemp twine!) Tried
to make it as original as possible, and it's matches the '84 catalog listing
on vintagetrek.com pretty much dead-on. Will include the original
reflectors. Frame has no dents or dings, just the usual assortment of nicks
and scratches. Saddle is for the photo only, but I'll include an Avocet
gel-flex in it's place. (A little worn, but with an Aardvark cover you're
good to go.) I call this a "level 1" restoration as I did not get into every
nook and cranny with a toothbrush and simichrome. (That would be level 2.
Level three calls for NOS parts.) It's ready to ride! Offering it to the
group first. (Also posted on iBob) Make me a reasonable offer given the
quality, rarity and originality. Shipping at cost, or you can pick it up in
Chicago.

[RBW] Schwalbe Marathon Extreme Folding 700 x 40 tires FS

2011-08-20 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,
I have a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Extremes used for one 25-mile mixed terrain
ride. They have a little dirt on the outside and talc on the inside. No damage,
tears, or punctures.

They are 42-622 or 700C x 40. They fit on my 29'er but I really wanted to use
them on my Rivendell. They were a little too big, so I bought the next size
down.

These tire provide great off road traction, but don't have the buzz and drag of
regular MTB tires - I'd highly recommend them.

$135 including shipping to the US.

Cheers!

I'd love to be back east riding the D2R2! What an incredible ride. I think
the new GB Lierre's would suit a ride like this. A little more tread and a
little lighter/narrower then the Hetre but just as fast. Have a blast!

[RBW] Re: Tires for D2R2? Hetre, Fatty Rumpkin, or Col de la Vie?

2011-08-20 Thread pruckelshaus
IMO Fatty's are terrible in anything resembling mud. If the course is dry,
or if the course is mostly gravel (I've never done the ride, but would like
to one of these years) I'd go for them, otherwise I would personally go with

[RBW] Frame pump for 2TT 56cm Hillborne?

2011-08-20 Thread Wemmick
I got a new 56 cm Sam Hillborne in July, one with two top tubes, and was
wondering if anyone knows what frame pump will fit between the tubes. I
tried a few at my LBS, but as top tubes are close together on the 56, none
fit.

Any suggestions?

[RBW] Re: Tires for D2R2? Hetre, Fatty Rumpkin, or Col de la Vie?

2011-08-20 Thread Ryan J
Fatty Rumpkins wouldn't be bad for the gravel roads, but it seems people who
ride them love the Hetres. I don't think that either would be a bad choice.

Looks like a great ride, plenty of up and downs.

[RBW] WTT: Bar tape

2011-08-20 Thread Daniel
I have several rolls of blue Tressostar and I'm looking for something
that will be more neutral or more earthy after shellacing (brown,
grey, tan, white, yellow, even orange).
Cheers!

[RBW] Lots o' bikes for sale lately

2011-08-20 Thread cyclotourist
Looks like everybody is selling something Rivendellian. A lot of posts
here, a real nice 26"
ARon
the 'bay (wasn't it for sale here once or twice in the past), and a
couple adds for Atlantii and even a Yves Gomes that was ended early. Go buy
a bike!
