[RBW] Re: Hunqa photos, and Albatross HB question
Hi, Bill. I'm glad the folks at RBW are helping. I'm sure you'll stabilize the bar unless the stem itself is problematic. I use Albatross bars with a Dirt Drop 100 with a shim with mo problems, even on torn-up roads and hoof-beaten trails. Maybe not as bad as what you've got. But I weigh ~245. Never a slip. I'm curious... what's your PBH (without shoes)? How's the standover on you Hunqapillar? What size tires do you use? I'm trying to decide between a(nother) 60cm Hillborne and a 62cm Hunqapillar. I'm not a crotch worrier, really. But I'm also not insane and have no desire to buy a bike which promises grievous bodily harm with every dismount. Unfortunately, I think it's the 62 or no Hunqa for me; I really like my bars way up there. People seem to love or hate M-bars. They took some getting used to for me, and getting them up high enough really helped. Now they are my preferred climbing bars (We do hilly training rides 2x a week April - August). You can get surprisingly aero on them for fast descents as well. [RBW] Re: Break-in for Berthoud saddles?
Yes, a saddle should feel good for a long time. My Berthoud pokes my sit bones after awhile. My old B17 was comfortable all day and into the night. I returned it under warranty when it became quite lopsided. I then purchased a Berthoud. It's a really nice saddle and I think I may keep trying. I have another B17 I might use for this weekend's 300k. [RBW] Re: Break-in for Berthoud saddles?
This may be blasphemy to some, but you might try to get the saddle wet, or just damp, and then go for a ride. I have done that (inadvertently) with brooks saddles in rain storms and they do tend to break right in after being ridden wet. Farthest I've gone in a day is 135 miles though, after which my whole body hurts. YMMV. -Matt P.S. there was another thread on here recently about Bethoud saddles twisting on the rails, for which there seemed to be a special clamp you could get as a preventative measure. [RBW] Re: Grease and Beeswax
+1 to Patrick's advice. I also just built my first bike (Riv Blériot) and sought advice on this from various sources. The rules of thumb I used were: 1) grease where the threads are big and strong (like on a BB) or on unthreaded connections (e.g. stem into top tube). I used Phil grease. 2) finer oil on smaller threads. I used either Phil oil or Boeshield depending on my mood. 3) wax on things that I want to grip tight but may want to easily remove or adjust. I didn't have any beeswax, but happened to have some Akempucky Bench Lube Tub (for woodworking), which contains a mixture of waxes (bee and others). Works fine. 4) do nothing on metal bolt that contact teflon-coated nuts. The only thing I would do different would have been to use less grease on my bar-end shifters. One of them just loosened and popped out of my bar during a recent tour. Good luck with the build! Me too! I had a great experience buying my sought after Rambouilet from Don Pearsall in NM. I also appreciate all the help many on the list gave me, spontaneously linking to geometry charts for the Rambouillet and Romulus for example. A very pleasant experience all around. Thanks! [RBW] Re: Grizzly Peak Century on the Hilsen
I wore a light short sleeve jersey, a light long sleeve jersey over that, and brought a windbreaker. The windbreaker lived in a jersey pocket all day. The longsleeve jersey came off and got stuffed into the handlebar bag at mile 35 or so. Doug's sweatsoaked wool longsleeve baselayer went into MY handlebar bag at the top of McEwen (harumph!) and ended up going home with me. I guess that was the equivalent of rocks. I had a phone and wallet in one small pocket and the camera in the other small pocket of the Hbar bag. A canister of trailmix and three larabars were tossed in there too with an extra tube and keys. [RBW] Re: Crappy Pasela Sidewalls
That's interesting, I actually find the Marathon Supreme 35mm's to be really zippy on my QB, more so than the Jack Browns I had on at first. That might just be the $138/pair premium biasing my perception though... The Schwalbes really are solid tires, especially in the wet and considering the toughness factor. I'll be interested to see how much treadlife they have, considering the pricetag. At about 1200 now, hoping they make it to at least 4000. And BOO to Paselas. Though I may try to boot the sidewall and ride them into the ground, just out of spite. On May 2, 10:30 pm, Mike wrote: > I've complained about problems with Paselas and JB sidewalls a bunch > here. But, steel, mmm perfect for serious, repeated stresses. Of course, I'd have to veer from the teachings in that I'd want the smallest frame I could get my hands on, with the clearance for the largest possible tires. Disc brakes wouldn't be an option, so I'd want something that took canti's (and would have to go back to the old trailsin' trick of tarring the rims for extra sticky). I'd think the best tire size to use would be a 26", as that's where you are going to find the big round profiles which give all that pavement slapping goodness when you are running 10-15 lbs o' pressure. Re: [RBW] SimpleGreen
I have already added one to my stable. Jumped on one of the dark maroon prototypes. It is so awesome. Just like the Quickbeam that it replaced. That headbadge looks great and cant wait to fill the blank space on my headtube with it. It is just not right to ride a bike from Rivendell that does not have an awesome headbadge. [RBW] Lighter Wheel Set Question
I would like to ride a lighter wheels/tires set on my A. Homer Hilsen at times when just riding paved roads. I have a pair of Mavic open pro wheels from another bike with road bike hub spacing (130). My A. Homer Hilsen is (135). Since the Mavic hub spacing is a bit narrower, my question is... will it hurt the frame to squeeze the rear dropout to fit the smaller hub? +1 for adding some spacers. That's the best bet, although as mentioned, re-dishing is required. I went the extra step and swapped in a longer axle at the time. [RBW] Re: Lighter Wheel Set Question
I did this on a 135mm frame I have making the 130mm rear hub I used a 133mm. This is exactly what the Surly Crosscheck was advertised to be able to do with its 132.5 mm spacing.fit either size axle. Chrome moly steel bends quite a bit before it stays bent ( no pun intended ) so I would add spacers and as long as enough axle is in the dropout you should be fine. It might be better to get a longer axle and add the spacers rather than trying to make a short axle work although I did it with my frame. [RBW] Re: My new Custom Rivendell Mixte
Thanks, Sumehra! My wife's Betty isn't nearly as amazing as your custom, but both she and I are extremely pleased with the custom paint results. Hi Michael, I hope I'm not presuming too much, but you may be thinking of my "adventure touring" (ex mtb) bike. http://www.flickr.com/photos/39151498@N07/4338978587/in/set-72157623375460150/ Camelbak MOLLE pouch, for the Camelbak Better Bottle (also great) available at many military NEX/BX/PX and/or online vendors: http://www.camelbak.com/Military-Tactical/Accessories/Bottle-Pouch.aspx This setup is still working great - I really dig it. [RBW] Re: Lighter Wheel Set Question
Hello, I'm new to the group. I have a 2009 AHH and it has 135 spacing. I believe the Saluki which the AHH replaced had 132.5 spacing. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Grease and Beeswax
Don't put any grease on the spindles. The cranks slide onto them "dry". At least this is what my LBS told me. The bolt which holds them on should be greased though. I'm one for Phil Wood grease or it's equivalent and Locktite Blue "Designed for the locking and sealing of threaded fasteners which require normal disassembly with standard hand tools" such as those fender to rack bolts. It's super annoying to have a fender start rattling 1/2 way to work and be required to remove the wheel just to tighten the bolt.
